Consider these six plants.

ဒီသစ်ပင် ခြောက်ပင်တို့ကို စဉ်းစားကြည့်ပါ။

It might not seem like going out on a limb to call them all trees.

But botanically speaking, only three make the cut.

Generally, true trees are tall, woody plants

that have leaves and one load-bearing trunk.

They begin their lives with primary growth,

အပင်တွေက မူလ ကြီးထွားမှုနဲ့ သက်တမ်းတွေကို စတင်တယ်၊

where a soft stem develops upwards until secondary growth kicks in

အဲဒီမှာဆင့်ပွား ကြီးထွားမှု မစခင်နဲ့ ရိုးတံက သစ်သားလို ပင်စည်မှာ ထူမလာခင်အထိ၊

and the stem bulks out into a woody trunk.

From there, trees keep growing taller from their crown,

 အဲဒီကနေ အထွတ်ကနေ အပင်တွေက ဆက်မြင့်လာနေပြီး

and wider, so new rings expand their trunks annually.

ပိုကျယ်လာတော့ အကွင်းအသစ်တွေက ပင်စည်တွေကို နှစ်စဉ် ပြန့်ကားလာစေတယ်။

Working off that rubric, identifying a tree might seem simple.

ဒီစံတွေကို အခြေခံရင်း၊ သစ်ပင်တစ်ပင်ကို ခွဲခြားတာ ရိုးရှင်းပုံရတယ်။

But not so fast.

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ ဒီလောက်မမြန်ပါဘူး။

What makes or breaks a tree can come down to some pretty specific characteristics,

သစ်ပင်တစ်ပင်ကို ဖန်တီး၊ ချိုးဖျက်တာက အပင် ဆင့်ကဲပြောင်းလဲလာပုံရဲ့ အကျိုးဆက်အဖြစ်

based on how the plant develops as a result of how it evolved.

ကြီးထွားပုံပေါ် မူတည်ကာ သစ်ပင်တစ်ပင်ဟာ တိကျတဲ့ ဝိသေသလက္ခဏာတွေဖြစ်ပေါ်လာနိုင်တယ်။

We only see trees among seed plants, which consist of two groups:

မျိုးစေ့ အပင်တွေကြားမှာ အပင်ကိုပဲတွေ့ပြီး ဒါတွေက Gymnosperm နဲ့ Angiosperms ဆိုတဲ့

gymnosperms and angiosperms.

အုပ်စုနှစ်စုအဖြစ် ဖွဲ့စည်းထားတယ်။

All gymnosperms are woody plants, and some of those are trees.

Gymnosperm အားလုံးက သစ်သားလို့ အပင်တွေ ဖြစ်ပြီး ဒါတွေထဲက တချို့က သစ်ပင်တွေပါ။

All angiosperms are flowering plants—

Angiosperms အားလုံးက ပန်းပွင့်တဲ့ အပင်တွေပါ၊

some of which are woody, and some of those are trees.

တချို့က သစ်သားလိုဖြစ်ပြီး တချို့က သစ်ပင်တွေပါ။

Plants assume a variety of forms.

အပင်တွေက ပုံစံအမျိုးမျိုးနဲ့ အသွင်ဆောင်ကြတယ်။

Tree is one of them.

သစ်ပင်တွေက ဒါတွေထဲက တစ်ခုသာပါ။

There are also shrubs, which grow as clusters of larger, woody stems—

ကြီးမားတဲ့ သစ်သားလို ရိုးတံတွေပါတဲ့ အရုံ တွေအဖြစ် ပေါက်ရတဲ့ ချုံပင်တွေလည်းရှိတယ်၊

like lavender, an angiosperm, and ephedra, a gymnosperm.

And then some angiosperms, like mint, are herbs,

ဒီနောက်၊ ပူဒီနာလို Angiosperm တချို့က၊ အပင်ပျော့မျိုးဖြစ်တဲ့

because they grow from herbaceous, non-woody stems.

သစ်သားလိုမဟုတ်တဲ့ ရိုးတံတွေကနေ ပေါက်တာကြောင့်၊ ရိုးတံပျော့အအပင်တွေပါ။

But mint and lavender are actually part of the same family—

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ သစ်မာကျွန်းပင်တွေလည်း ပါ၀င်တဲ့ ပူဒီနာနဲ့ လာဗင်ဒါက

one that also includes hardwood teak trees.

တူညီတဲ့ မျိုးရင်းရဲ့ တကယ့် အစိတ်အပိုင်းပါ။

That’s because these planty forms are all evolutionarily tangled up,

 ဒီအပင်ပုံစံတွေ အားလုံးက ဆင့်ကဲဖြစ်စဉ်အရ ရောထွးနေတာကြောင့်

and all trees don’t comprise one closely related group,

like insects or mammals.

Many plants actually charted entirely different evolutionary paths

အပင်များစွာက သစ်ပင် အဆင့်ကို ရောက်ဖို့ လုံးဝ ကွဲပြားတဲ့ ဆင့်ကဲဖြစ်စဉ်

to reach tree status.

လမ်းကြောင်းတွေကို ပုံစံချထားတယ်။

Apple trees, for example,

are closer kin to rose shrubs and herbaceous strawberry plants,

နှင်းဆီ ချုံပင်တွေ၊ အပင်ပျော့မျိုးဖြစ်တဲ့ စတော်ဘယ်ရီပင်တွေနဲ့ ပိုနီးနီးဆက်နွယ်နေပြီး

than to avocados and guava trees, which are also pretty distantly related.

Over millions of years, some plant lineages became less tree-like,

နှစ်ပေါင်း သန်းချီကြာတော့ အပင်မျိုးနွယ် တချို့က သစ်ပင်နဲ့ သိမတူလာတော့ဘဲ၊

while others became increasingly arborescent.

တချို့က တဖြည်းဖြည် သစ်ပင်နဲ့တူလာတယ်။

But not every lineage has what it takes to become a tree.

All plants exhibit primary growth.

အပင်အားလုံးက မူလ ကြီးထွားမှုကို ပြသတယ်။  

And all gymnosperms also display secondary growth,

Gymnosperm တွေအားလုံးက ဆင့်ပွား ကြီးထွားမှုကိုလည်း ပြသပြီး

making them woody.

ဒါက ဒီအပင်တွေ သစ်သားလိုဖြစ်စေတာပါ။

However, angiosperms tend to fall into two groups,

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ Angiosperm တွေကတော့ အုပ်စုနှစ်စုထဲမှာ ကျရောက်လေ့ရှိပြီး

and only one yields woody plants.

တစ်မျိုးတည်းကပဲ သစ်သားလို အပင်တွေကို ထုတ်ပေးတယ်။

All angiosperms sprout early leaves distinct from those that grow later;

Angiosperms တွေက နောက်ပိုင်း ပေါက်တာတွေနဲ့ မတူတဲ့ အစောပိုင်း အရွက်တွေ ပေါက်တယ်၊

some— dicots— sprout two seed leaves, while monocots sprout just one.

Monocots and dicots also grow differently from there.

Monocots don’t undergo woody secondary growth,

မိုနိုကော့တွေက သစ်သားဆန်တဲ့ ဆင့်ပွား ကြီးထွားမှုကို မကြုံရတာကြောင့်၊

so none of them are trees.

ဒါတွေက သစ်ပင်တွေမဟုတ်ဘူး။

Some dicots, however, do, and some woody dicots are trees,

ဒါပေမဲ့၊  ကြုံရတဲ့ ဒိုင်ကော့တချို့၊ သစ်သားလို ဒိုင်ကော့တွေက သစ်ပင်တွေဆိုပေမဲ့၊

though plenty aren't.

အများအပြားက မဟုတ်ဘူး။

But why can dicots grow wood and be trees— and monocots can’t?

ဘာကြောင့် ဒိုင်ကော့တွေက သစ်သားပေါက်ပြီး သစ်ပင်ဖြစ်ကာ၊ မိုနိုကော့က မဖြစ်နိုင်တာလဲ။

Well, the earliest angiosperms were probably woody,

ဒါတွေရဲ့ ပန်းမပွင့်တဲ့ ဆွေမျိုးတွေနဲ့ အများကြီးတူတဲ့၊ အစောဆုံး

much like their non-flowering relatives, the gymnosperms,

Angiosperm တွေက၊ အရင်ဆုံး ပေါ်ပေါက်ခဲ့ လောက်တဲ့ Gymnosperm တွေလို

which likely evolved first.

သစ်သားလို ဖြစ်နိုင်ခဲ့လောက်တယ်။

Dicots seem to have kept the propensity for woodiness embedded in their DNA,

even as the characteristic has switched off at different points,

while monocots seem to have lost it completely.

So, okay, back to these six.

ဒါဆို ဒီခြောက်ပင်ကို ပြန်သွားရအောင်။

Each has its quirks, but these are the true trees of the bunch.

တစ်ပင်စီမှာ ထူးခြားချက်တွေရှိပေမဲ့၊ ဒါတွေက အတွဲလိုက် သစ်ပင်အစစ်တွေပါ။

The Brazilian grape tree just looks like that

ဘရာဇီး စပျစ်ပင်က  ဒီလိုပုံပေါက်နေတာက

because its fruit grows directly from its trunk and branches—

ပင်စည်နဲ့ အကိုင်းတွေကနေ အသီးတွေ တိုက်ရိုက် သီးတာကြောင့်ပါ၊

a trait called cauliflory.

ရိုးတံကနေ ပန်းပွင့်တာလို့ခေါ်တဲ့ လက္ခဏာပါ။

Giant baobabs’ bulbous trunks store water.

ဧရာမ baobab ပင်တွေရဲ့ ဝဝလုံးလုံး ပင်စည်တွေက ရေကို သိုလှောင်တယ်။  

And bristlecone pines, some of the oldest trees,

သက်တမ်းအရင့်ဆုံး သစ်ပင်တချိ့ဖြစ်တဲ့ bristlecone ထင်းရှူးပင်တွေက  

grow slow and sturdy in their cold habitats,

အေးတဲ့ နေရာတွေ နှေးကွေး ခိုင်ခံ့စွာ ကြီးထွားကြတယ်၊

twisted by millennia of high winds.

နှစ်ထောင်ချီတဲ့ လေပြင်းတွေကြောင့် လိမ်နေတယ်။

The remaining three plants grow in tree-ish shapes

ကျန်တဲ့ အပင် သုံးပင်က သစ်ပင်ဆန်တဲ့ ပုံသဏ္ဍာန်နဲ့ ပေါက်လာပေမဲ့၊

but lack critical qualities.

အရေးပါတဲ့ အရည်အသွေးတွေ ကင်းမဲ့နေတယ်။

All three are angiosperms, and more specifically, monocots.

သုံးပင်စလုံးက Angiosperms တွေဖြစ်ပြီး ပိုတိတိကျကျပြောရရင်၊ မိုနိုကော့တွေပါ။

Their stems are tall and thick, but made of herbaceous primary growth,

ဒါတွေရဲ့ ရိုးတံတွေက ရှည်ပြီး ထူထဲပေမဲ့၊ ဆင့်ပွား ကြီးထွားမှုကနေ သစ်သားမဟုတ်တဲ့၊

အပင်ပျော့မျိုးဖြစ်တဲ့ မူလ ကြီးထွားမှုကနေ ဖန်တီးထားတာပါ၊

not wood from secondary growth.

Bananas have pseudostems with soft centers,

ငှက်ပျောပင်တွေမှာ ပျော့ပျောင်းတဲ့ ဗဟိုတွေရှိတဲ့ pseudostem တွေ ရှိပြီး

surrounded by hardened, overlapping leaves,

 ရင့်ချော်နေပြီး ထပ်နေတဲ့ အရွက်တွေနဲ့ဝိုင်းရံထားပြီး

and are related to bird-of-paradise and ginger plants.

bird-of-paradise နဲ့ ဂျင်းပင်တွေနဲ့ ဆက်နွယ်နေတယ်။

Joshua trees are succulents, like agaves.

Joshua သစ်ပင်တွေက ရှားစောင်းလက်ပတ်ပင်တွေလို အရည်ရွှမ်းတယ်။

And palms are pretty closely related to grasses.

ထန်းပင်တွေက မြက်ပင်တွေနဲ့ အလွန်နီးကပ်စွာ ဆက်နွယ်နေတယ်။

However, among angiosperm dicots that do produce wood,

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ သစ်သား ထုတ်လုပ်တဲ့ Angiosperm ဒိုင်ကော့တွေကြားမှာ၊

the line between shrub and tree can be blurry.

ချုံပင်နဲ့ သစ်ပင်ကြားက မျဉ်းက မှုန်ဝါးနေနိုင်တယ်။

Characteristics like height and trunk diameter

ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်ချဖို့၊ အမြင့်နဲ့ ပင်စည်အချင်းလို

might be used to reach a verdict.

လက္ခဏာတွေကို အသုံးပြုနိုင်လောက်တယ်။

But because those metrics change over time,

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ ဒီတိုင်းတာမှုတွေက အချိန်နဲ့အမျှ ပြောင်းလဲတာကြောင့်၊

a plant like juniper may switch from shrub to tree within its own lifetime.

ဂျူနီပါလို အပင်က ၎င်း သက်တမ်းတစ်လျှောက်မှာ ချုံပင်ကနေ သစ်ပင်အဖြစ် ပြောင်းနိုင်တယ်။

Plant evolution is twisty and complex, and tree-ness is no exception.

အပင် ဆင့်ကဲဖြစ်စဉ်က လိမ်ကောက်၊ ရှုပ်ထွေးကာ သစ်ပင်ဖြစ်မှုက ခြွင်းချက်မဟုတ်ဘူး။

And even the arborescent plants that don't technically make it

နည်းပညာအရ  တရားဝင် သစ်ပင် အဆင့်ကိုမရောက်တဲ့

into the official tree club

သစ်ပင်နဲ့တူတာတွေတောင်၊

are certainly tree enough by other measures.

So, no shade to them.
