Learn English: Nice to Meet You

Hi this is Bill.

こんにちは、ビルです。

And right now I’m gonna explain  to you about a speaking problem 

そして今、私が韓国に来てから何度も見たり聞い たりしたスピーキングの問題について説明しようと思います

that I have seen and heard far too many times since I came to Korea. 

。

Now, it's very easy phrase. The simple phrase, “Nice to meet you.” 

さて、とても簡単なフレーズです。 「はじめまして」の一言。

You probably know it. You’ve probably said it. 

あなたはおそらくそれを知っています。 あなたはおそらくそれを言ったでしょう。

But the problem is so many Korean people don’t 

しかし問題は、多くの韓国人が「はじめまして」というフレーズ

understand when to really use  the phrase “Nice to meet you.” 

を実際にいつ使うべきかを理解していないこと です。

Because when you meet somebody new that means you told them your name. 

新しい人に会うとき、 それはあなたが彼らにあなたの名前を言ったことを意味するからです.

They told you their name. Many times I’m just walking down the street, 

彼らはあなたに彼らの名前を言いました。 通りを歩いているだけ

you know, I’m shopping or something and then a Korean person says, “Hi,  

で、買い物か何かをしている と、韓国人が「こんにちは、初めまして」と言う

nice to meet you.” And I think …

ことがよくあります。 そして、私は…

I don’t know your name. I didn’t tell you my name. 

あなたの名前を知りません。 私はあなたに私の名前を教えませんでした。

We didn’t meet. How could it be nice? 

会いませんでした。 どうすればいいですか？

So, you look at the board right here, This. 

では、ここのボードを見てください 。

Here I am Bill "hi". Korean person "Nice to meet you." 

こんにちは、ビルです。 韓国人「はじめまして」

There is no "Hi, my name's Bill." “My name is Han, nice to meet you.” 

「こんにちは、私の名前はビルです」はありません。 「私の名前はハンです、初めまして」

There’s not that. Korean person says, "Nice to meet you." 

それはありません。 韓国人は「はじめまして」と言います。

But we didn't meet each other. You don’t know my name. 

しかし、私たちはお互いに会いませんでした。 あなたは私の名前を知りません。

I don’t know your name! Don't be that guy. 

私はあなたの名前を知りません！ その男にならないでください。

Okay? The proper way to do this now. 

わかった？ 今これを行う適切な方法。

Here is a sample dialog where you use the  easy phrase “Nice to meet you” properly. 

これは、 「はじめまして」という簡単なフレーズを適切に使用するダイアログのサンプルです。

It goes like this. Bill oh that's me Bill says "Hi". 

こんなふうになります。 ビル ああ、それは私です ビルは「こんにちは」と言います。

And then the Korean person  says. "Hello, my name is Han." 

そして、韓国人 はこう言います。 「こんにちは、私の名前はハンです。」

"Oh! My name is Bill." Maybe we shake hands 

「ああ！私の名前はビルです。」 「はじめまして」 と握手するかもしれませ

"Nice to meet you." Yes! 

ん。 はい！

Because you did meet me. And then after one more  

あなたは私に会ったからです。 そして、もう一度

I say "Nice to meet you, too." because you met me, I met you. 

「はじめまして」と言います。 あなたが私に会ったから、私はあなたに会った。

You said your name. I said my name. 

あなたは自分の名前を言いました。 私は自分の名前を言いました。

If you didn’t learn the new person's name, and you didn’t tell them yours, 

新しい人の名前 を知らず、自分の名前も教え

you didn’t meet them. So, it can’t be "Nice to meet you." 

なかった場合、その人に会ったことはありません。 だから、「はじめまして」ではいけません。

Ok, remember that. Exchange names - then “Nice to meet you.” 

わかりました、それを覚えておいてください。 名前を交換してから、「はじめまして」。

Don’t just say "Hi, nice to meet you." Because you didn’t meet me yet.

「はじめまして」とだけ言わないでください。 まだ会ってないから。
