Prepositions of place: Let's compare this  ball in the box. This is on,

Here the ball is next to the  box. Two words together now:  

Aqui a bola está ao lado da caixa. Duas palavras juntas agora:

‘next to’ or, ‘to the left of,

‘ao lado de’ ou ‘à esquerda de,

to the right of.

à direita de’.

The ball is in front of. So we say  ‘in front of’ or ‘In front of’,  

A bola está na frente. Então dizemos ‘na frente de’ ou ‘Na frente de’,

you can drop that T. But we don't say ‘behind of’;

for ‘behind’ there is no ‘of’. The ball is in  front of the box.
