Prepositions of place: Let's compare this  ball in the box. This is on,

under,

behind.

Here the ball is next to the  box. Two words together now:  

‘next to’ or, ‘to the left of,

to the right of.

The ball is in front of. So we say  ‘in front of’ or ‘In front of’,  

you can drop that T. But we don't say ‘behind of’;  

for ‘behind’ there is no ‘of’. The ball is in  front of the box.

The ball is behind the box.

‘On top of’ the same meaning as ‘on’: On,

under,  

behind,

in,

next to,

to the right of, 

to the left of,

in front of,

on top of.
