AMERICAN ACCENT: Null, Skull, Dull

A student recently asked me about:

最近学生から次のような質問がありました:

These are really hard words. The dark L does  affect the vowel, it's not pure a vowel. 

これらは本当に難しい言葉です。 暗い L は 母音に影響を与えますが、純粋な母音ではありません。

The tongue presses down and back a little bit  for that dark L and it starts doing it right

from the beginning. So it colors the vowel.  I honestly think the best way to work with

these words is to just listen and repeat  over and over. I've seen my students make

great transformations with sounds they can't  really distinguish when they just repeat.

So let me do a couple for you here now.  I say it, you say it back out loud:

So I say the word, I start

the sound and then I feel the back part of my  tongue moving to press down and back a little bit.
