important topics of people's lives we talk  about food with our friends and our family  

that's why it's important to learn vocabulary  and phrases about cooking the first term we're  

going to study today is recipe a recipe is  a set of instructions for preparing a dish  

recipes include a list of ingredients recipes  give you basic directions on how to prepare food  

recipes use words like 1st 2nd 3rd to tell you  the order that you should follow when preparing  

food recipes also lists quantities and weights  how much of each ingredient you need you can  

find a collection or many recipes in a cookbook  here's an example sentence for recipe do you know  

a great dessert recipe the next cooking word  is ingredient ingredients are the foods or  

substances that are combined or put together  to make a dish a recipe will contain several  

or many ingredients here's an example sentence  for ingredient how many ingredients do we need  

to make that recipe now let's have a look at this  recipe it's called quick and easy chicken noodle  

soup Wow doesn't that sound religious second  next after that these kind of words for order  

and I also highlighted some words don't worry  you will learn about these words in the video

now let's look at some more cooking terms  preheat preheat means to heat an oven to  

a certain temperature before putting food in it  here's an example sentence for preheat you need  

to preheat the oven to 300 degrees stir means to  mix liquid or other substances by moving an object  

such as a spoon and a circular pattern here's  an example sentence for stir stir all of the  

ingredients together until well mixed let's look  at our next term a pinch or a dash of something a  

pinch or a dash is a small indefinite amount  of a substance typically a powder like salt  

sugar or spices a pinch is an amount that can  be taken between the thumb and the forefinger  

so you take the amount of say salt and sprinkle  it into the dish you have now put it a pinch of  

salt into the dish excuse an example sentence  now just add a pinch of salt or put a dash of  

sugar the next term is top to top topped usually  means to cut meat or vegetables into large squares  

here's a sentence for chopped chopped 100 grams  of chicken and add it to the other ingredients  

the next word is boil boil is to change from a  liquid to a gaseous state or to change a liquid  

into a gas producing bubbles of gas that rise  to the surface of the liquid agitating it as  

they rise boil means to make something really hot  or simply put boil means to make a liquid really  

hot so that it's bubbling in the pan here's an  example boil the pasta for 15 minutes the next  

term is simmer simmer is to cook or cook a  liquid at just below the boiling point so  

simmering a liquid is slightly less hot than  boiling here's an example sentence simmer the  

soup for 20 minutes okay the next word is roast  roast is a type of cooking it means to bake meat  

or other food uncovered in an oven here's an  example last night I ate roasted chicken the  

next word is grill to cook food on a grill a  grill is a cooking utensil of parallel bars on  

which food is exposed to heat like from charcoal  or electricity here's an example sentence I would  

love a grilled steak for dinner the next word  is baked to cook by dry heat in an oven here's  

an example sentence I spent all weekend baking  a cake for my friend's birthday okay so remember
