we'll be discussing and studying how to understand jokes in English first I have

seen that many English learners tend to get mixed up on the difference between

fun and funny we use fun to talk about something that provides us with

entertainment it is enjoyable and we use funny to talk about something that makes

us laugh something that is humorous so an example of fun would be wow I had fun

at the party last Saturday an example of funny would be wow my friend Donna told

me a funny joke yesterday basically fun is when you enjoy yourself and have a

good time we use funny to talk about something that makes us laugh that joke

is funny you wouldn't want to say that joke is fun what we could say that

comedy show was funny in today's lesson we will learn a type of joke called a

pun a pun is a joke that makes use of words that have more than one meaning or

words that sound like one another to understand upon joke

you need to under to understand both meanings of the words today I will tell

you five joke jokes that are puns and explain the meaning of these jokes the

first joke the past present and future walk into a bar it was tense what's the

joke we have to look at the double meaning of the word tense tense can mean

the set of forms taken by a verb to talk to indicate time for example past tense

present tense future tense tense can also mean anxiety

or nervousness in a situation so in this joke the grammatical past present and

future were in a bar together which made this for a tense or nervous situation

the past the present in the future walk into a bar it was tense

the doctor says sure which way did you come in what's the joke the joke is a

play on the expression to help somebody out the first meaning of this expression

is help somebody out a phrasal verb to help somebody out to do something to

somebody get out of a car to help somebody get out of a room so in this

joke the person is probably asking the doctor for medical help but

doctor thinks the person needs help to get out of the building

is between a teacher and a student the teacher says I wish you'd pay a little

attention the student says I'm paying as little attention as I can what's the

joke this joke relies on the difference between a little and little little in

this joke is rather negative meaning not much attention to the teacher a little

in this joke is more positive could you please show more attention so the

teacher says to the student I wish you'd pay a little attention the student says

I'm paying as little attention as I can this thing on question why didn't the

skeleton go to the party because he had no body to go with what's the joke this

joke plays on the double meaning of the words no body and the word nobody we say

nobody because the skeleton only has bones it doesn't have a body and the

word nobody meaning no person to go with so this joke can either mean that the

skeleton that only has bones didn't want to go to the party because it doesn't

have a body

or that the skeleton has no friends and it had nobody no person to go to the

party with why didn't the skeleton go to the party because he had no body to go

with

and the next joke is another question-and-answer joke why is the

celebrity so cool because she has a lot of fans what's the joke

the junk actually has two double meanings the first is the word cool

meaning to have a low temperature and cool meaning an awesome person the

second double meaning is the word fans fans meaning the device with blades that

spins around to help keep your body cool and fans meaning a person who has a

strong interest in some other person or some thing so the celebrity could be

cool because they're using a fan to cool their body or the celebrity might be

cool because a lot of people their fans are interested in them why is the

celebrity so cool because she has a lot of fans what jokes do you know why don't
