all right so hello everybody and welcome  to the third english danny channel  

live stream i'm dr don and i've got four  segments for you today uh so today i've got  

uh uh four segments the fourth segment is for  questions and comments from you the viewers  

so you can start uh adding comments or questions  now uh any reasonable and responsible questions  

or comments should appear in the live stream  in segment four okay so you can start adding  

those questions and comments now so today i've  got a segment on this day in history i also have  

a segment on internet slang and a segment on memes  we're trying something d different with that third  

segment we'll see how that goes uh and then our  fourth segment is viewer questions and comments  

but the first segment is this day in history let's  get started all right so this day in history may  

2nd 1933 the media reports it was the first  media report of the loch ness monster sighting  

the loch ness monster uh if you don't know what  the loch ness monster is uh this is a famous  

creature in scotland a legendary creature uh  that may or may not exist probably doesn't exist  

uh but it is a famous uh legend basically on this  day may 2nd 1933 a newspaper in scotland reported  

the first ever sighting of the loch ness monster  a scottish couple living near loch ness which is  

a deep lake in scotland reported that they saw  a huge animal that no one had ever seen before  

out in the water and this was the beginning of the  loch ness monster legend and a legend in english  

is a very famous person or story so for  example you could say albert einstein  

is a legend of physics meaning he is a very  famous person involved in the study of physics  

a legend can also be any famous story which  may or may not be real or or thing which may  

or may not be real so for example many people  know the legend of king arthur so king arthur  

is a person and there's a story many stories about  king arthur in uh england um and he's a legend a  

person who may or may not have been real probably  wasn't but there may be some basis in reality  

but it's a famous very well-known person  and very well-known sequence of stories the  

loch ness monster is an example of a famous  story or famous thing in this case an animal  

which may or may not be real but many people  uh know all about it they have heard about it  

and the first report happened in 1933 and since  that first report there have been many expeditions  

made to to to discover the truth about this legend  and an expedition an expedition is a journey  

with a specific purpose or goal in mind like a  expedition to the south pole the first expedition  

to the south pole was a journey with the goal of  reaching the south pole and coming back safely for  

the first time and in this case the expeditions  to loch ness were journeys made by people to find  

out if there really was a large animal living in  that lake that no one had seen before now that  

that lake is very deep and dark so it's  difficult to see you can't see all the way down  

and so you can't just look and see if something's  in there or not it's too dark it's too deep goes  

down too far so some ships brought in sonar to  try to detect it now what is sonar a sonar system  

appears on many ships and what sonar  is is it's a system for using sound  

to detect objects in the water you send out a  sound and then if there's objects it'll bounce  

back from those objects and based on how quickly  the sound comes back and what it sounds like when  

it returns you can get a pretty good idea how  big the object is and how far away from you it is  

so using sonar um people did detect that there  were some large objects down in loch ness but  

they weren't able to tell whether it was an animal  moving around or a large animal but there are some  

large objects down there which is very mysterious  and a lot of amateur investigators like to  

travel to loch ness to see if they can find  some evidence an amateur investiga investigator  

is someone who is trying to discover the truth  of something but they're amateurs meaning they  

don't get paid for it they do it for fun or as a  hobby instead of as compared to something like a  

professional investigator a professional  investigator like a police investigator  

they investigate things as part of their job they  get paid to do it but amateurs do it because they  

enjoy it or they want to find something out  or become famous or just learn something new  

so amateur investigators like to try to find  the truth about the loch ness monster uh the  

creature that lives in the lake called loch ness  loch is a way of saying lake in scottish dialect

okay all right so um all right  so let's uh so that's our first

can answer a few questions right away spontaneous  means suddenly without a plan i made a spontaneous  

decision uh to take a trip meaning i made  a sudden quick decision without any plan  

that i would take a trip uh so nfs and there's an  adverb spontaneously so you add ly spontaneously  

i spontaneously decided that i would take a trip  meaning again that i decided suddenly quickly

last week so welcome back we're glad that you're  back again for uh today's live stream live stream  

so let's go into our second segment which is  about some internet slang so i have a few terms  

three terms here that you might encounter on the  internet uh and they often appear in chat rooms or  

in comment sections but don't worry these aren't  inappropriate words they're just words that i've  

i've seen often and two of them appear often  on their own but the third weird word appears  

more often as an image than as a word and i'll  explain what that means in just a minute so  

first let's start with our first word it's cringe  cringe now in normal english cringe is a verb  

meaning to take this this action where you turn  away from something to turn away from something  

uh to recoil or back away from something out  of a sense of shame or a sense of embarrassment  

or a sense of fear so if you're fearful  of something you might cringe away from  

it or if you're embarrassed you might cringe  because of embarrassment you don't want to  

to people to see you or trying to kind of hide  yourself or hide your face because you feel shame  

so that's the normal meaning of the word cringe  so an example sentence would be the dog cringes  

whenever our cat comes near him so that's  an example of the normal use of the word  

cringe the dog is probably scared of the cat so  he cringes he pulls away from the cat out of fear  

but we also use cringe when we feel embarrassed  or ashamed and that's where the internet sense of  

cringe appears now in internet slang cringe is  used as a noun or as an adjective and it means  

something embarrassing or awful or shameful that  someone else did or said as in the sentence hey  

dude you just posted cringe that means you posted  something that you should be ashamed of that was  

really embarrassing of you to post that oh that's  cringe it's very cringe and then you could say you  

could estimate something the value of something by  calling it cringe that movie was cringe this movie  

was cringe that means it was a movie that was  really bad or shameful for everyone who made it  

so cringe is a negative term it's a very uh it's  a you don't want to post cringe you don't want to  

make something that's cringe right it makes other  people cringe for you when you do that okay so  

that's our first example word so our second word  is uh almost the opposite and it's based based  

that's the opposite of cringe almost so this is  an adjective or a noun and it's used to mean that  

you agree with someone it's a way of expressing  agreement or it's also a way to recognize that  

a person or an action which was courageous or  it was unique or it was powerful so for example  

someone might say people always say that my  english accent sounds funny but i don't care  

i'm proud of it and i like the way i speak and it  would be appropriate to reply to that by saying  

based okay basically you're saying good for  you good for you uh that's that's that's gutsy  

that's based or in the sentence hey he's the most  based person i know meaning again a person who's  

courageous unique and powerful in himself so he's  a person who is worthy of attention or worthy of  

recognition based so you want to be based you want  things that are based and not cringe based and  

not cringe that's what we're looking for and our  third word is face palm now face palm is the act  

of hiding your face in your hand so palm is this  part of the hand and you put your palm you just

oh that was terrible that's a face palm right you  do this and you can do it with both hands if it's  

really bad oh oh no so that's a face palm okay so  it's an action it's an action of hiding your face  

but uh when we use the word it's used as a noun to  name that action that action of hiding your face  

out of shame when somebody else does something  cringe you might face palm you might do a face  

palm a way of showing that you can't believe  how dumb or foolish that other person was  

so you could say you could say something or do  something now for example your friend might say  

i didn't study for my test last week and i failed  terribly and you might respond by oh face palm as  

a way of saying that's embarrassing now here's a  picture there's a picture illustrating an example  

of facepalm as a picture and there's some text  here do you speak english yes what's your name yes  

oh that's a face palm why because while  yes is an answer to do you speak english  

it's not an answer to what is your name  that's embarrassing oh no no no no i thought  

you understood because you answered my first quest  question correctly but i can tell after the second  

uh uh answer that you didn't understand and so  that image that you just saw where captain picard  

that's the name of the character is doing that  making a face palm that's actually often appears  

um when people post online or post a face  palm image and in fact that particular image  

is often referred to as an example of  a meme and that's our third segment  

our third segment is about memes uh this word  meme and it's sometimes pronounced maymay  

but that's kind of pronounced that way as a joke  the person who created the word pronounces it meme  

and so i think i'm just going to go with that it  was richard dawkins who invented memes so i'll go  

with his uh pronunciation but maymay also sounds  funny people like to say that sometimes online  

what does they mean well basically a  meme is an image or text meaning words  

or it's a combination of image and words which  conveys a very simple message shortly and easily  

it's designed to be something that is understood  quickly by people without much explanation  

and to be shared to be spread around it's meant  to go viral meaning to become very popular and  

shared on the internet so if you think of genes in  our body our genes are uh parts of us that carry  

little units of information about our body it  carries uh our genes carry information like what  

are what are your what's our eye color what's our  hair color how tall are we uh how are we shaped  

our genes carry that information means  are what carry cultural information  

they don't carry information about a body but  they carry information around in culture so uh  

so for this segment i'm going to look at some  examples of memes and i haven't i don't know  

what these are i'm just going to respond to these  some of them maybe i've seen before but some of  

them maybe i haven't seen before let's see how  quickly and easily that they carry information  

so uh so yeah let's load up some of those memes  and uh take a look at them and i'll see what i can  

tell you about them so here's our first meme so  in this one okay so this meme is easily conveying  

the idea that commas are important in english now  how does it do that uh well the the lady says help  

a thief and there's a man running away and then  she says yay because the police show up but then  

the police help him and she asks why aren't you  arresting him commas lady okay so if you look at  

the first box help a thief grammatically it should  be help comma a thief because she's expressing the  

idea help meaning help me comma becau basically  a thief help there is a thief or it's a thief  

but instead she says help a thief without the  comma without the comma this sentence means help  

a thief meaning help a person who is a thief which  is what the cop does the policeman comes up and he  

helps the thief well that's not appropriate but he  did that because she left out the important comma  

so that's our first meme there okay so that's an  example of a meme it's conveying some information  

and here's another one uh this is another  one it's another grammar meme so this one  

is more about just the words the image isn't  as important here but the words are the the  

mean and here it says i like cooking  my family and my pets don't be a psycho  

use commas a psycho means a psychopath a crazy  person someone who would do something crazy like  

uh cooking uh and eating uh their pets okay so why  is this work because if you left out that comma  

if you left out after cooking and it just said i  like cooking my family and my pets it would mean  

you like the act of cooking your family  and cooking your pets but nobody should  

like that this is instead the comma is there to  mean i like these three things i like cooking  

comma my family meaning i also like my family and  a third thing my pets i also like my pets okay so  

don't be a psycho use commas um and this one this  uh is also a meme now the image is important here  

uh this is a pun this is an example of a pun a  play on words so if you look at the the image it's  

a picture of an animal called a koala a koala  bear or koala i think they're from australia  

and uh they're called koalas or koala bears  but they're not bears they're not related to  

bears even though they're called that and so the  koala is saying what do you mean i'm not a bear  

i have all the qualifications well the word  qualifications spelled q-u-a l-a-f-i-c-a-t-i-o-n-s  

means uh all the qualities that make you uh  qualified to be something they they make you  

you earn a title uh but instead  of saying qualification it says  

qualification sounds similar so that's the  joke it's a pun play on that word qualification  

qualification so there's our there's our  meme there all right so we have one more  

a jury of english uh majors uh uh i didn't do  nothing oh a confession um i don't get this one

oh oh see i don't really care about this  okay um all right so i'll explain why  

uh and then i'll explain why i don't really it  doesn't matter to me okay so there's something  

in english called a double negative which  means if you say uh i nothing is a negative and  

didn't is a negative um and there's this idea  among some grammarians english grammarians that  

if you say you did did something then you did it  if you didn't do something you didn't do it but  

if you didn't do nothing they cancel out and it  means you did do something um that's the that's  

the logic of it um but i don't really agree with  that grammatical take i don't think that that's  

actually how it works i think in english a double  negative is just a way of emphasizing the negative  

um and in some languages there's no such thing as  a double negative for example in korean you have  

to say it uh like almost literally like that if  you don't do something you would use the negative  

both times so um in some languages it doesn't work  that way in english there's some disagreements  

some people say that if you didn't do nothing it  means you did do something right that's the logic  

it's it's a logic puzzle almost but  to me it doesn't matter okay this one  

okay this one works as a meme uh because i got  this one immediately okay so there's a very famous  

uh hollywood uh image it's on the hillside  the hollywood hills and the word hollywood  

is spelled out like it is in this image it's in  big letters even bigger letters than than you see  

here but in this case this hill this is not  the hollywood hills the famous hollywood hills  

this is some back backwoods hills somewhere and  these uh a couple of rough characters in the front  

uh are standing out in front of it saying yeah  this is hollywood uh and the end the uh it says  

at the bottom seems legit now sarah uh in last  week's live stream uh used the slang word legit  

meaning legitimate meaning seems true seems  uh legal lawful appropriate seems uh accurate

this is a bit of understatement here seems legit  this is actually being ironic saying no it's not  

legit it's completely not legit it's a way of  saying seems like it's uh you say seems legit  

but you really mean the opposite that's irony  actually uh so uh yeah that's what's going on  

uh it doesn't seem like hollywood it seems like  it's definitely not here's another one that i  

get as well and here the image also works how  was online teaching this is conveying the idea  

that online teaching is uh sad or depressing or  upsetting in some way and how does it do that  

by saying well how was online teaching and the  guys pointing to this large body of water saying  

this is a river of my tears meaning i cried so  many tears because of the online teaching that it  

has now become a river okay so that's a ridiculous  overstatement but a way of expressing i really  

didn't like it uh horrible is bad horrific  is bad terrible is bad terrific is good ah  

and he's expressing the idea of his brain is  hurting because why because the first pattern  

worked horrible horrific that worked why didn't  terrible terrific work well english is full of  

these examples where you just have to learn um  that sometimes what works in one context doesn't  

work in the other so horrible and horrific both  do have the same same meaning but terrible and  

terrific don't terrible means horrible and  terrific means great so uh so that that's a  

that's a good one when you're english a teacher  explains how to pronounce and then this cat is  

what is the is there something at the bottom  so uh ex how to pronounce uh oh the th sound  

yeah okay well i i was i would find that funny  no matter what comes after pronounce because  

pronunciation in english is very famous for being  difficult but the th sound can be difficult for  

uh many many different languages in this case this  works more with the image because the th sound to  

make the th sound you have to put your tongue  through your mouth that that is there put that  

over there and you see the cat is also putting  his tongue out like he's trying to make the  

th sound also okay so that's what's going on  with this one okay so these are pretty good uh

rules to learning english and then their hour  no rules and some somebody be gay instead of  

hemingway says this makes me feel so uncomfortable  okay so why does it make them feel uncomfortable  

because they're saying there are no rules and  there t-h-e-r-e is spelled the same as t-h-e-i-r  

which is a possessive and r a-r-e uh which is a  version of uh to be also sounds the same as the  

possessive our o-u-r in some in some pronunciation  sounds exactly the same it sounds a little close  

the way i say it r and hour it's a little close  and then no sounds the same as no no no meaning  

negative sounds the same as k-n-o-w meaning to  know something to have awareness of something  

which is a funny one and then rules is just  rules but there are no rules and that makes me  

uncomfortable because there are no rule the rules  are always changing just like pronunciation rules  

are always changing e t c a word used to make  others believe that you know more than you  

actually do so etc is short for etc etc is a latin  phrase meaning uh and continuing or and so forth  

and it's a way of saying oh i like uh travel and i  like sleeping and etc a way of saying i like these  

two things and other things that i could name i  could go on and on but i i i just it's etc etc etc  

etc etc that way you don't have to name all those  things uh so it could be used as a trick uh to  

not have to name more things meaning remember  more words remember more vocabulary words you  

could just say etc or etc to avoid that  so that's what's going on with this meme  

english game play place the word only anywhere  on the sentence she told him that she loved him  

uh so actually only can go anywhere in this  sentence and it will change the meaning only she  

told him that she loved him meaning only her she  only told him that she loved him meaning that's  

the only thing she did all she did was say that  she loved him she told only him that she loved  

him she told only that guy that she took that  she loved him she told him only that she loved  

him meaning that's all she said she could have  said other things but no she told him only that  

she loved him she told him that only she loved  him meaning nobody else in the world only she  

loved him she told him that she only loved  so i could keep going on but like the  

meaning of the word of the sentence changes  depending on where you put only and it works  

every time it works every time so that's uh  that's a that's a that's is that a game or is  

that something that makes your brain hurt ah so  there we go those are examples of memes and here  

was our first meme do you speak english yes what  is your name yes okay all right so okay that's  

it for segment three let's take a look at any  questions or comments that may have been left

all right these are great um and this is what this  is what exactly this is the way i want it good  

that's great uh i hope you are learning something  and enjoying practicing your english by listening  

to me i'm trying to speak a little bit more  slowly than normal he speaks in front of the judge  

oh he speaks in front of the judge  uh a judge is a very important person  

so of course teacher don okay good to hear from  you that's great um are there any questions uh  

any questions as well as uh comments uh i'll try  to answer any of those um sometimes it takes a few  

minutes for the questions to start filtering  through um let me go and check some of the uh  

chat that i have here i've got a chat set up  and i can scroll down and see what's going on  

okay so uh let's see we've got um uh oh yeah  that's right um uh we'll i'm gonna try to build on  

uh some of the live streams uh so if you watched  today's live stream you'll notice that we referred  

back to a couple of things we did in the previous  live stream like uh when uh danny showed me the  

the meme that said it seems legit that was using  the the slang word that we learned about last  

time also but even if you hadn't seen the that  previous live stream i i think i explained it  

well enough that uh people could uh understand  it but we'll try to do that a little bit okay so  

let's see uh what other comments do we have so  we've got uh some others post any questions um  

so yeah somebody was aware of the koala that is  an animal that lives in australia and yes indeed  

the koala and that was just my guess based on my  memory i thought koalas were in or in australia  

australia seems home to lots of different strange  animals like koalas they also have kangaroos  

that jump around and they have big pouches on  front where they carry their their children  

let's see okay so let's see um all right so any  questions or comments uh that you might have uh  

or things that you want to know about or learn  about oh and uh also any ideas uh for things  

that you might want to see in future live streams  so we can talk about uh that's something else you  

can make suggestions for um which we'll um take  into account so that uh if if there are things  

that people want to see in future live streams let  us know about that in the uh comments uh as well  

so that we can try to uh include some of the  things that uh that you want to learn about or  

see all right so someone's giving me the thumbs up  for some interesting slang yeah so those were some  

slang words that are that's pretty um uh pretty  current uh slang terms i would say that both of  

those uh the first two words uh cringe and baste  and then also uh facepalm that's pretty pretty  

current pretty current internet slang that's not  out of date people still still use those terms

and people know what it is they don't  think it's out of date or old-fashioned  

the one thing you don't want to do on the internet  uh is be too out of fashion or out of date  

um i don't know how it is in your uh language  whatever your native language might be but on  

the english speaking internet there's a premium on  things being uh fresh meaning very recent very new  

and very not used before not cringe it's got to  be uh very uh new and so uh if it's if it's things  

that uh people have seen a million times before  or it's used been used a lot a lot of times people  

some internet users will say it's a cliche that's  old-fashioned that's corny c-o-r-n-y corny or it's  

boomer uh i don't know if sarah did that word uh  uh but uh something that it's something that your  

parents or grandparents might do uh not something  that uh that that young fashionable people uh  

would do on the internet okay so um okay  so if we don't have any more questions  

and comments uh we'll wrap this uh live stream  up here in a couple of minutes um i want to say

uh something is old and out of date uh you know  that it could be in a book or something but the  

internet is for keeping things fresh so keep  it until next time don't be cringe be based
