We're going to be talking about two things. We'll talk about

Abbreviated styles of writing and speech which have their own special grammar rules

to save space or time and

We'll also talk about

abbreviations and

acronyms

Okay, first, let's talk about when we use

Abbreviated styles of writing or we're speaking in English. The first thing isn't

Advertisements or also instructions small advertisements which we often call ads

often leave out articles or

subject and object pronouns forms of the verb be and

prepositions for example

Gold wanted for cash the verb be is left out

recipes which is a type of instruction also often have

Abbreviated styles and if you look at this example here

You can see that we leave out the verb be and we don't use any articles the second thing that we also use

Abbreviated styles for is when we take notes

for example

Went to grocery store

Back at 2:30

again

following the same rules previously

We don't use the verb be and we leave out articles or pronouns or things like that

We want this to be very short

that's why we use abbreviations the third example for when we use abbreviated styles is

For commentaries for example when someone is commentating about sports

They often have their own special style or grammar where they leave out the less important verbs

Here you can in this example

This would be typically what a sports commentator is saying during a soccer or football game

the fourth example of an abbreviated style in English is

for titles or labels

or even slogans of companies for example

Seaside hotel

Hollywood cinema bus stop best pizza in town

You can see that all of these things do not use articles do not have the be verbs

Okay, so we just cut them when we're using abbreviated styles. Okay. Now we're going to talk about

abbreviations and acronyms in

American English

we use a lot of abbreviations and acronyms because there are

very long names for a lot of things especially

When we talk about government or other different organizations, the names can be very long

So we often shorten them first. We will talk about punctuation when we abbreviate things in

American English whenever we abbreviate a word we put a period after it

for example

Mr

Doctor

Kilogram

Pound

Limited as in a limited company, the second thing that we will talk about is initial letter

abbreviations some abbreviations are made with the first letter of

Several words and this is often when it comes to an organization. For example, CNN

CNN is a news organization and

the name actually means

cable news network

UNESCO UNESCO

Is also an organization

But the name is very long it stands for

United Nations

Education scientific and cultural organization zatia notice that some abbreviations are pronounced letter by letter

such as

CNN or BBC

But others are pronounced like a separate word such as

UNESCO the ones that we pronounce as separate words are called

Acronyms the third thing that we will talk about is how to best pronounce these abbreviations

We often put stress on the final letter of the abbreviation

for example

us a

or

UK or

CNN or BBC

The fourth thing that we will talk about is using articles for abbreviations

Usually uh

and the are dropped when we use acronyms so our example

UNESCO, we just drop the we don't say duh. UNESCO just UNESCO
