English Suffixes -Y -ISH -ESQUE - Learn English Grammar

Today we're going to do some awesome suffixes

Oggi faremo dei fantastici suffissi

To describe things like weather, you can use the suffix "Y"

Per descrivere cose come il tempo, puoi usare il suffisso "Y"

But you can also use this to describe people's appearance

Ma puoi anche usarlo per descrivere l'aspetto delle persone

For example:

Ad esempio:

If somebody has a lot of hair

Se qualcuno ha molti capelli

They are "hairy"

È "peloso"

Or another example "Shiny" or like the guy in twilight "Sparkly"

Oppure un altro esempio "Brillante" o come il tizio al crepuscolo "Sfavillante"

Notice you're putting a noun with the letter "Y"

Nota che stai mettendo un nome con la lettera "Y"

So you can also describe tastes and smells

Quindi puoi anche descrivere gusti e odori

For example:

Ad esempio:

This tastes fishy

Questo sa di pesce

Or lemony

O di limone

Or my tea is milky

O il mio tè è al latte

So those are most common for tastes and smells,

Quindi quelli sono più comuni per gusti e odori,

But for colours and times, we add "ISH"

ma per colori e tempi, aggiungiamo "ISH"

This means not exactly that colour or time, but, more or less

Questo significa non esattamente quel colore o tempo, ma, più o meno

For example:

So she's asking "What colour are my eyes?"

He can say "Not exactly green, not exactly blue"

If you're not good with meeting people on time

You can also just use "ish" alone

Puoi anche usare solo "ish" da solo.

For example:

"Are they good-looking?"

"Was the movie good?"

"Ish"

Remember: "ish" is kind of informal

Ricorda: "ish" è una specie di informale

...or informal-ish

...o informale-ish

But to say that something is in the style of something in a more formal way

Ma per dire che qualcosa è nello stile di qualcosa in un modo più formale

You can say: "Esque"

Puoi dire: "Esque"

For example:

Per esempio:

This church is in the style of a Roman Church

Questa chiesa è nel stile di una chiesa romana

It's "Romanesque"

È "romanico"

If something's in an Arab style in "Arabesque"

Se qualcosa è in stile arabo in "arabesco"

If something sounds like it's from a Kafka novel, It's Kafkaesque!

Se qualcosa sembra provenire da un romanzo di Kafka, è kafkiano!
