00:30
Now I'll give you the contact details at  the end of this particular lesson.
6
30000
4080
00:34
So what are we going to talk about? Well, often  when I'm teaching students, they fall into the old
7
34080
5680
00:39
habit of using what I call double negatives on two  negatives, two negative words in the one sentence,
8
39760
6880
00:46
and it's a definite, I'm going to use two  negatives now as a definite no, no.
9
46640
4640
00:51
Okay, so it's a definite no, no,  don't use double negatives,
10
51280
4880
00:56
for example, I haven't seen nothing. Here, so  that's absolutely bad English, and you shouldn't
11
56160
6720
01:02
use it the obvious options, I haven't seen  anything. So negative with a positive or positive
12
62880
7520
01:10
with a negative, but it's something that quite  happens quite often. And it comes up quite often.
13
70400
5600
01:16
So let me try and explain to you the rationale  and the reasoning behind it. Okay, so as I said,
14
76000
5440
01:21
double negatives are not something we'd like to  use. Occasionally, they are used, but in very,
15
81440
8480
01:29
very infrequent situations, and also in very, very  informal situations, almost like slang. Yeah.
16
89920
7040
01:36
So one expression you might often hear come across  in a movie or book is, you ain't seen nothing yet.
17
96960
8240
01:45
You ain't seen nothing yet. And when you look at  it written down here, you'll see that there are
18
105200
5520
01:50
two negatives, but it's actually quite acceptable.  You hear it in in songs, you ain't seen nothing
19
110720
6880
01:57
yet. Or you hear it in movies. And it is allowed  in those situations and only in those situations,
20
117600
7120
02:04
but we wouldn't use it normally. In spoken  English, you ain't seen nothing yet.
21
124720
5440
02:10
Okay, so what's the thinking behind it? Well, a double negative is usually defined as
22
130160
6400
02:16
two negative words that appear in the same  sentence. And actually, what it results in is a
23
136560
6400
02:22
positive. Okay, so two negatives, make a positive.  Okay, so if you're getting confused with that will
24
142960
6320
02:29
try and remember your mathematics. So if somebody  asks you to multiply minus two by minus three,
25
149280
6560
02:36
the answer actually will be plus six sounds a  little bit strange, but one minus, multiplied by
26
156640
6720
02:43
another minus figure, so minus two and multiply  by minus three will actually give you plus six,
27
163360
6560
02:49
and that would be your answer. So if we apply that  mathematical thinking to our English is exactly
28
169920
6720
02:56
the same. Two negatives will result in a positive,  okay, but we don't use it in spoken English.
29
176640
7600
03:04
So let me give you a little example. Let's say  I made the statement, I have nothing, okay,
30
184880
7520
03:12
I have nothing. Nothing is the negative word  I have is positive. But the fact that we use
31
192400
7520
03:21
nothing in the sentence turns it into a negative,  okay? I have nothing meaning I have no money, or I
32
201200
7280
03:28
have nothing to give you. Or I have nothing to do  with that. Something like that. Okay? So it's a,
33
208480
5600
03:34
it's a negative in the sentence that turns it into  a negative even though I have is positive, nothing
34
214080
7440
03:41
turns I have from positive into negative, okay,  so we can't say I haven't nothing, okay. I have
35
221520
8400
03:49
nothing. So if I could, if I could use it as a  two negatives, I might say, I do not have nothing.
36
229920
9200
03:59
Okay, so that that's your two negatives in the  sentence, I do not have nothing and remember what
37
239120
4560
04:03
I said about the mathematics minus two multiplied  by minus three will equal plus six. So here,
38
243680
6880
04:10
I did not have nothing. Do not one negative  nothing, second, negative one negative multiply by
39
250560
8080
04:18
the second negative turns it into the positive. So  in actual fact, what that sentence means I do not
40
258640
5840
04:24
have nothing means I have something. Yeah, I have  something and that's exactly what we should say we
41
264480
6080
04:30
should look at the positive. I have something  okay, not I do not have nothing. Okay? So,
42
270560
6320
04:36
avoid at all costs, avoid those double negatives.  So what I'm going to do now, I'm just going to
43
276880
5760
04:42
give you some examples of sentences where we use  the double negative and then I'm going to put them
44
282640
7040
04:49
into the correct format. Okay, so the first one  will be the double negative. I don't know nobody
45
289680
8080
04:57
who's coming for example, to a party. Don't know, nobody's who's coming.
46
297760
4320
05:03
What you should be saying is, I know nobody  who's coming, or I don't know, anybody who's
47
303040
8720
05:11
coming. Okay? So make sure you have a positive  and a negative or negative and a positive.
48
311760
5600
05:17
And that would be perfect English. Another example. I don't have no time for that.
49
317360
6960
05:24
I don't have no time for that. What it should be  is I don't have any time for that. Okay, or I have
50
324320
8320
05:32
no time for that. I have no time for that. So  negative, positive or positive and a negative
51
332640
7040
05:47
I can't get no satisfaction. Well, if you're into  the Rolling Stones, you'll probably recognise
52
347760
4880
05:52
that from one of the very early songs of Mick  Jagger, I can't get no satisfaction. But it's
53
352640
6480
05:59
okay for him to say it, but not okay for you  to say. So what you should say is, I can't get
54
359120
5440
06:04
any satisfaction, or I got no satisfaction.  If you were making a complaint, for example,
55
364560
5680
06:10
in a restaurant or a bar or wherever it might  be. So I can't get any satisfaction, or I got
56
370240
5600
06:15
no satisfaction. But only if you're Mick Jagger,  you can say I can't get no satisfaction, but I'm
57
375840
6480
06:22
not Mick Jagger. And I'm sure he's not listening  to this particular podcast or subscribing to
58
382320
5600
06:27
my channel. So we just have to do without. Another example. You ain't seen nothing yet. And
59
387920
5920
06:33
another line from another song. I can't remember  which song this is. But it's You ain't seen
60
393840
4480
06:38
nothing yet. And usually when this song was sung,  it's something you ain't seen nothing yet. PVB
61
398320
5480
06:46
You ain't seen nothing yet. So  the song goes, but in this case,
62
406880
3600
06:50
when we say You ain't seen nothing  yet, what we really mean to say is,
63
410480
4000
06:54
you haven't seen anything yet. You haven't seen  anything yet. And it's much better English. Don't
64
414480
7520
07:02
get confused by the words of the song enjoy the  song, by all means, try and sing it much better
65
422000
6560
07:08
than I did. I hope but you You ain't seen nothing  yet. Should be you haven't seen anything yet.
66
428560
7680
07:16
I can't find my keys nowhere. I can't find my  keys nowhere. It's not from a song. It's just
67
436240
6960
07:23
somebody comes in and they're looking for  the car keys. I can't find my keys nowhere.
68
443200
4320
07:28
I cannot find my keys anywhere. I cannot find my keys anywhere. Okay,
69
448160
7040
07:35
so nowhere becomes anywhere. That negative, that  second negative, put it into a positive then you
70
455200
6640
07:41
have one negative I cannot find my keys anywhere.  I want positive perfect English. Okay. Again,
71
461840
6960
07:48
avoid at all costs those double negatives. She never goes with nobody. She never goes with
72
468800
6800
07:55
nobody. Again, you're getting hopefully the hang  of it. Now. She never goes with anybody. He or she
73
475600
6880
08:02
goes with nobody. Yeah. So if you're wondering why  daughter or friend doesn't go to the cinema, she
74
482480
7760
08:10
never goes with anybody. She always goes on her  own. She never goes with anybody. She always goes
75
490240
5280
08:15
on our own. Or she goes with nobody, she prefers  to go on her own either. We'll do one negative one
76
495520
7600
08:23
positive on positive, one negative. And then finally, all the witnesses.
77
503120
4880
08:28
So if we're talking about a detective story, all  the witnesses claimed that they didn't see nobody.
78
508000
7440
08:35
All the witnesses claimed that they didn't see  nobody should read. All the witnesses claimed
79
515440
6080
08:41
that they didn't see anybody, they didn't see  anybody. Okay, so avoid those double negatives
80
521520
8800
08:50
make the sentence sound much more effective  and much, much more professional.
81
530320
5600
08:55
Like all English, that tends to be a few  exceptions. So let me just give you a few
82
535920
4880
09:00
exemption exceptions in relation to this  aspect of double negatives. They can be
83
540800
4960
09:05
permitted if the intention is to make a positive  statement. So let me just read you an example.
84
545760
6640
09:12
It wasn't very expensive. So talking about  some dress or a pair of shoes. It wasn't very
85
552400
4640
09:17
expensive, but it certainly didn't cost nothing.  So here you mean, it certainly cost something it
86
557040
8160
09:25
was actually money, but it wasn't as expensive as  I thought. So we again, it wasn't very expensive,
87
565200
6640
09:32
but it certainly didn't cost nothing. Okay. It  means that you didn't get it for nothing you did
88
572400
7600
09:40
have to pay but not what you had thought you might  have to pay so we can use it when the intention
89
580000
5840
09:45
is to turn it into a positive. Okay. Or let's give you another example. When I
90
585840
5680
09:52
said I didn't want a lot of fuss about  my birthday, I didn't mean no fuss. Yeah.
91
592080
7280
09:59
Okay, so When I said I didn't want any fuss about  my birthday, I didn't mean no fuss. So here, we're
92
599360
5920
10:05
using two negatives. But in fact, we can use it  because the intention was for it to be a positive.
93
605280
6080
10:11
So what you're really saying is, when I said I  didn't want any fuss, my, for my birthday, I meant
94
611360
5760
10:17
a little bit, but not a big party or a big hurrah,  I wanted something, perhaps something in the in
95
617760
5920
10:23
the family. So you wanted something, but not the  big, big, flamboyant, expensive celebration case.
96
623680
9200
10:32
So you can in that situation, both of the examples  I've given you, you can use the double negatives,
97
632880
6480
10:39
because the intention was to turn them into a  positive. And that's the type of exception that
98
639360
5280
10:44
we're talking about when, when we mentioned. Another way in which we can use a double negatives
99
644640
4880
10:49
is where we perhaps use not. And then we  follow it with a word with a prefix like
100
649520
5680
10:56
I R or non one of those. So let me  give you a little example of that.
101
656000
5280
11:01
He wasn't irresponsible about his duties,  he wasn't irresponsible about his duties,
102
661280
6160
11:07
means he was responsible, he was very  responsible about his duties.
103
667440
4480
11:12
This gemstone is not uncommon, okay, is  not uncommon. So not negative on common,
104
672880
7760
11:20
could be negative, but it means is, this gemstone  is common, you see it everywhere, okay.
105
680640
7040
11:27
And finally, the results are not inconclusive,  the results are not inconclusive means that they
106
687680
6640
11:34
are conclusive, we did get information from the  results. So in those situations, you're using not
107
694320
6480
11:40
a negative word with the negative of an adjective  by adding one of those prefixes that we've looked
108
700800
7120
11:47
at, in other examples, okay, so you'll see them  written on the screen here. So just study them for
109
707920
5520
11:53
a while. And just to understand what they mean.  And if you have any problems, come back to me,
110
713440
4720
11:58
and I'll try and explain it to you again. So let's just look at a quick rule of
111
718160
3920
12:02
thumb when we want to use anything, and anything also includes words with any like,
112
722080
5760
12:07
anybody or anyone. Okay, so we  can use them in questions.
113
727840
4720
12:12
Is there anything I can do for you? Is there  anyone you want me to call? Is there anybody,
114
732560
6000
12:18
you know, suitable for this job? So we  can use it in that context? Okay.
115
738560
4560
12:23
And if we want to use them with statements  that include not, or no, yeah, I don't know
116
743120
7920
12:31
anything about it. Yeah. I don't know anybody  that would be suitable. I don't know anyone
117
751040
8000
12:39
that would be able to answer the question,  okay. So you can use it in that context.
118
759040
4320
12:43
And if you want to use nothing, when  then we can use it in statements
119
763360
3920
12:47
where there is no other negative word. There is nothing I can do. There is nothing I can
120
767280
6640
12:53
add. There is nothing more I can tell you. Okay,  so that's use those as a rule of thumb. Okay,
121
773920
6320
13:00
so what we've basically been talking about are  double negatives, and impressing hopefully upon
122
780240
5200
13:05
you the fact that double negatives are a  definite, no, no, we don't use them.
123
785440
5040
13:10
There are exceptions. And I've covered those,  hopefully, in the lesson that you'll be able to
124
790480
3840
13:14
go back over them and you'll see it on the screen.  Again, if you don't understand that if you don't
125
794320
4720
13:19
follow it. Come back to me and I'll try to explain  it again and give you a few more examples. Okay,
126
799040
6160
13:25
but double negatives. Occasionally you'll see  them you will definitely hear them in songs,
127
805200
5920
13:31
you will definitely hear them in movies  like you ain't seen nothing yet. Okay? But
128
811120
5440
13:37
we don't use them in speech because they  sound wrong. They give a bad impression,
129
817120
5760
13:42
and they're really quite negative. Okay, so  double negatives. Thanks a lot for listening.
