4 ways to learn English on the go

Hi.

Do you want to study English but you don’t have enough time?

Do you want to keep on learning when you’re outside the classroom?

Do you need more flexibility in terms of when and where you choose to learn?

Well, since mobile devices are flexible and portable,

they are an excellent learning tool.

Today, we focus on mobile learning outside the classroom.

In other words, today’s topic is learning on the go.

Mobile learning is about the use of mobile devices

and learning activities at the student’s own time and speed,

alone or with some kind of instruction.

Because more and more students of all ages own a smartphone with

mobile internet, and there is a positive attitude towards

digital devices in general nowadays, online learning is a great option.

So let’s make the most of it.

The first tip for you to learn on the go is to use e-books.

You can even download content to use anytime.

You can practice your reading and make use of common features like writing

notes and highlighting text if you find something interesting.

And my favourite, if you’re following a Cambridge course book within your

digital learning environment, Cambridge One, you can access

the digital material just using your device.

The second tip is bite-sized videos where you can spend just a few minutes

to learn English on topics of interest.

Perfect to keep your attention, right?

You can find great and useful videos on social media, like YouTube,

Instagram or TikTok, and you can even use

virtual reality tools which provide you with

real language history and culture experiences.

The third tip, podcasts.

This is a tip I’ve just discovered, and it is amazing.

I love listening to TED Talks before I go to

bed so my eyes rest and I have something nice to

share with my family during breakfast the next morning.

You will improve your listening comprehension and develop your

vocabulary since you can listen to English

learning podcasts or podcasts in English on

topics of interest, again, wherever you are.

Next tip, mobile-friendly activities.

You can play games in English on your phone and use your phone’s

features for English practice.

Change your phone’s operating system to English so you can

practice all the time, either reading or talking to your virtual assistant.

You can also download the Cambridge Dictionary

+Plus app, which offers free, personalised vocabulary practice.

Choose your level and create your own word lists or use the ones available to

practice what interests you, travel, environment, technology, whatever.

Then, quiz yourself with word memory and flash cards.

It is free, useful and fun, and you’re learning at the same time.

This app also gives you a word of the day that is personalised

and suitable for your level, so you can create a digital list of these

words together with the ones you learn while watching TV or in a conversation.

It is better than a traditional notebook since you can check

the meaning and pronunciation, click through to example sentences,

and then quiz yourself in the same way we mentioned before.

This supports daily learning and building vocabulary over time.

It is a fantastic way to spend your free time and learn on the go.

So next time you have a little time, make the most of it by using some of

the tips I gave you.

Then if someone asks you, what have you done today,

you will proudly say, I’ve been learning English.
