What is netiquette? 4 tips for online lessons

Hello guys.

Some of us will soon be going back to the classroom,

but some of us will continue learning online.

For those of you who are learning online,

I want to share some tips about netiquette.

Firstly, what is netiquette?

Well, the net is the abbreviation for internet.

Etiquette is the set of rules or customs

that control accepted behaviour.

With both of them we have netiquette,

which is the set of rules

about behaviour that is acceptable on the internet.

Netiquette makes online lessons better for everyone.

Don’t you hate it

when the first few minutes of a lesson are just spent

working on tech problems?

Practice good netiquette by preparing a few minutes before.

Check that the internet connection and all tools

are working okay and

that the programs you need are installed.

Make sure you do have everything you need

before the lesson starts,

so you don’t have to get up

and miss something the teacher says,

who will then need to re-explain it to you.

Then you'll be ready to go when the lesson starts,

and you and your teacher won't lose any unnecessary time

sorting out these problems during the lesson.

Sometimes focusing

on your online lessons can be difficult,

so you've got to do your best to avoid anything

that might distract you or your classmates.

If you can, use headphones.

Mute your microphone when you are not talking

so everyone listens better.

If possible, turn off your phone.

Use the chat for discussing ideas during the class,

not as social time.

Try and only use English in it,

as this is a great way to practice your writing

and comprehension and skills.

Make sure you look presentable and ready to learn.

Let people in your house know

if you will be on camera and avoid unnecessary movements

on camera that could distract your classmates.

If everyone follows the same rules,

you will help each other to focus on your class

and to avoid missing out on important instructions

from your teacher.

The teacher will always be there to help you.

But before you ask a question, do a little research

on the internet or in the frequently

asked questions section

of the course and try to find the answer first.

If you can't find it, then you can ask the teacher.

This will save time,

help you work better on your own,

and increase learning time for everyone.

Online lessons can feel strange at times.

You may feel you're just talking to a screen,

but it is important to remember

that you're talking to other people, like you would

in a physical classroom.

Speak clearly and not too quickly

when you're online to make sure everyone can understand you.

A good idea is to look

at your computer camera when you talk,

rather than the screen.

This means you make eye contact with your teacher or classmates,

which will help everyone connect with you and your ideas.
