Well, hello, and welcome to this

English lesson about personal hygiene.

When we talk about personal hygiene in English, we

talk about all the things we do to stay

clean and to smell nice and to look nice.

When you go out in public, you want to look your best.

You want to make sure that people

are pleased to be around you.

You don't want people to think you smell

or that you look ragged because you haven't

gotten a haircut in a very long time.

You certainly want to be presentable is

another word we use in English.

You want your nails clipped?

Did I clip my nails this morning?

Yes, I think I did.

So anyways, welcome to this

English lesson about personal hygiene.

In this lesson, we'll look at a number

of words and phrases that we use in

English to talk about keeping ourselves clean.

Toiletries.

So the first word I wanted to

teach you today is the word toiletries.

This is a word we use to talk about all

of the things that you use in the bathroom.

Specifically, we use this word when we go on a trip.

You want to make sure you take your toiletries.

You want to take a toothbrush and toothpaste and a

comb or brush and maybe some shampoo and deodorant.

It refers to the things you would take with on a trip

in order to keep yourself clean when you're on the trip.

So I have a special bag for my toiletries.

If I go on an overnight trip, I make

sure I put my toiletries into that bag.

You'll notice it has the word toilet in it.

The only thing it has in common with a toilet

is that you use these things in the bathroom.

But these are things that we

would refer to as toiletries.

You would take them with on a trip so that

you can, I don't know, brush your teeth, comb your

hair, put on some deodorant and all of those things.

Personal hygiene.

So this is a term we use, as I said in the

introduction, to refer to taking care of how we look and smell.

It's important in the world that you wash your hands.

It's important that you have a bath

or shower every once in a while.

It's important that you look your best.

And especially, it's important that

you smell your best.

You don't want to go for days on

end without showering or putting on some deodorant.

Now, your culture might be different, but at least

in North America and in most parts of the

world, you do want to take care of yourself.

And when you do that, we

refer to it as personal hygiene.

You want to make sure that you

take care of your personal hygiene.

One of the things that we do

is we wear deodorant or antiperspirant.

So deodorant is something you put in your armpits.

You put deodorant on every morning.

At least I put deodorant on every morning.

And it helps you to not smell throughout the

day when you start to sweat a little bit.

Antiperspirant is similar.

You also put this in your armpits,

but it stops you from sweating.

So that's the difference between the two.

Both smell nice, and when you go to the store, you

can smell the different ones and pick one that you like.

But deodorant kind of masks the smell

and antiperspirant prevents you from sweating.

So when you wear deodorant, you can still sweat.

When you wear antiperspirant, you sweat less

or you don't sweat at all.

And so that prevents you from smelling.

Now, both of these deodorant and antiperspirant

will have a nice smell to them.

So again, you will use your personal preference.

Or maybe you have a partner who prefers a certain

smell and they might help pick one out for you.

But you'll wear these in order to

not smell too bad throughout the day.

Now, if you go out, you might wear perfume if you're

a woman, or you might wear cologne if you're a man.

So this is something that you might wear

when you dress up to go somewhere nice.

You might put on some perfume if you're going

out on a Friday night with your spouse, you

might put on some cologne if you're going out.

You might also wear this if you don't have a partner

or spouse and you're looking for one and you want to

smell really pretty or you want to smell really good, you

might wear some perfume, or you might wear some cologne.

Now, this is changing a little bit.

In North America, most people will not wear

perfume to work or cologne to work.

Some people still do.

But we're starting to have more

and more fragrance free workplaces.

And even some events, they ask them to be fragrance

free because some people wear too much perfume or too

much cologne, and then it's a little bit overwhelming.

But perfume and cologne, two things we wear to

smell really nice when we're around other people.

And then there's something newish called body spray.

This is also something that makes you smell nice.

It's a little different than cologne or perfume.

You might spray it.

If I was to wear cologne, I would spray a little bit

in the air, so I have a little bit on me.

Whereas body spray, you might put more on you.

Honestly, I'm not familiar with body spray, so

I can't talk at length about it.

But it's certainly something that people wear

as well in order to smell nice.

So again, you wear perfume, you wear cologne,

you put on perfume, you put on cologne,

you wear, or you put on body spray.

Hand lotion.

In Canada, your hands tend to get

very, very dry in the winter.

And so sometimes you'll put on some

hand lotion or some hand cream.

This is something that just makes your skin.

Can you hear that?

My dry skin.

It makes your skin soft.

Again, you sometimes might put this on after being out

in the sun for too long, but anytime your skin

starts to feel rough and dry, you might want to

put on some hand lotion or some hand cream.

Those are the two things that you might wear in

order to make sure that your hands feel nice.

Hairspray.

So this is not something that Bob uses,

but hairspray is something that you use.

So your hair stays the way it

looks when you're done doing your hair.

So if you do your hair a certain way, you

might use some hairspray to hold the hair that way.

I don't know if this is used as much anymore.

I'm obviously not familiar with it.

But hairspray is something that you spray on your hair

in order to hold your hair in a beautiful way.

So maybe you've had your hair done by a hairstylist,

and then you're going out that evening, you might use

some hairspray, so your hair stays exactly that way.

Feminine hygiene products.

So this is a category unto itself.

There's probably enough products and things in this category

for me to do a whole lesson, but I

wanted to mention a couple of things about that.

One, I'm not the right person to

do a lesson on feminine hygiene products,

but definitely someone like Ronnie is.

This is an important topic.

So if you are interested in knowing

a lot more about feminine hygiene products.

So, as we know, women have their period, and

once a month they do need feminine hygiene products.

So Ronnie has a great video on this.

You should go and watch that.

She talks about all of the products and everything.

And again, she's a much better person

to do this than I am.

So if you do want to

learn about that, another important topic.

A toothbrush.

So this is one of the simpler ones.

You would use a toothbrush to brush your teeth.

It's handy to brush your teeth a couple of

times a day so that you don't have bad

breath, but it also keeps your teeth clean so

you don't get cavities and other problems.

And of course, along with a toothbrush, you

would use toothpaste, dental floss, flossers, and mouthwash.

Well, I went super fast there, didn't I?

Let me back up.

You brush your teeth with a toothbrush, you

use toothpaste, you put some toothpaste on your

toothbrush, and then you brush your teeth.

When you're done brushing your teeth or before, you

might use some dental floss to floss your teeth.

Or they have these new things called

flossers, which make it a little easier.

When you floss, you put a little piece of string

between each tooth in order to clean out between each

tooth also helps a lot to prevent bad breath.

And then you might use some mouthwash at the end

to make your breath have a minty smell or to

smell better than how it normally smells, I guess.

So again, let's back up.

So for oral hygiene, that's oral, you would

use a Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, flossers.

Maybe they're just easier.

I like to use flossers and mouthwash in order

to keep your teeth healthy and clean and also

to make sure you don't have bad breath. Shampoo.

So you need to take care of your hair.

We don't generally use soap in our hair.

We usually use shampoo, which is a liquid

form of soap designed to clean your hair.

We also use something called conditioner after

we use shampoo to soften our hair.

Now, that being said, someone like me with really

short hair, sometimes I just grab a bar of

soap and I wash my hair with it.

And that's it.

Sometimes I use shampoo.

I rarely ever use conditioner, and I'll explain why.

My hair is super short and kind of wiry.

Actually, to me, my hair feels long right now.

I'll probably get a haircut this weekend.

So I don't really care if my hair styles

well, because I don't style my hair, I don't

comb my hair or brush my hair.

So I don't use conditioner to soften

my hair or make it more manageable.

That doesn't matter to me.

And I don't always use shampoo because soap

does just as good a job for me.

But usually in our shower, we have some kind of

shampoo and you use shampoo to wash your hair.

So when I take a shower, I wash my hair with shampoo.

Sometimes just with soap conditioner does

a really nice job sometimes.

I'll tell you a little secret.

Sometimes when the hair feels a little stiff and wiry,

I will use a little bit of conditioner on my

beard so that it's softer through the day.

So it's a little man secret for

some of you out there with beards.

Maybe if your beard feels a little bit rough.

Can you hear that?

Probably a little bit of conditioner goes a long ways.

Sometimes qtips.

So qtips or cotton swabs are

not for cleaning your ears.

You're not supposed to stick them in your ears.

Okay, I will not say whether I use them in my ears.

Okay.

I will not say that I do that.

But they are used for.

Maybe you need to clean a little

bit of something off your eye.

Maybe you wear makeup and you're using it

to clean off a bit of makeup.

But a qtip is a little stick with a

little bit of soft cotton on the end.

And it can be used to clean the outer part of your ear.

Don't stick it in your ear.

It can be used to clean the outer part

of your ear or maybe along the side of

your nose in those kinds of things.

But they're a pretty common thing

to find in a bathroom.

If you are talking about personal hygiene, I don't

use a lot of qtips, but sometimes I do.

Sometimes you have a need for a little

stick with a cotton swab on the end.

By the way, Q tip is the name brand.

That's the name of the company.

But they are so popular.

We just call all of these things

qtips, no matter who makes them.

But yes, don't stick them in your ears or nose.

I don't know why you would do

that, but don't do that either.

Nail clippers are used, obviously to clip your nails.

So when I see that my nails are getting long, I

usually will clip my nails or trim my nails that morning.

So let me repeat that your nails grow.

In English we say, oh, my nails are getting long.

I should clip my nails.

My nails are getting long, I should cut my nails.

My nails are getting long, I should trim my nails.

So I usually use clip.

And then when you clip your nails, the piece

that comes off is called a nail clipping.

And when you're done clipping your nails,

you should clean up your nail clippings.

Don't leave them laying on the counter in the bathroom.

That's rude.

You should always clean them up.

So anyways, nail clippers are used to clip your nails.

And you clip your nails when they are getting long.

Okay.

Obviously some of you like long nails, but for

me, I like to keep my nails nice and

short, especially during the summer on the farm when

you're doing physical labor, you don't want your nails

too long because they break easily.

Not a nice feeling when you tear a nail

or when you get it caught on something.

So I usually keep my nails trimmed fairly short.

I know you can probably, let's see

if the camera will focus here.

They're getting a little bit long.

I would consider that long when you can

see the little white end on them.

So I will probably clip my nails tomorrow

morning or trim my nails tomorrow morning.

Tweezers.

So tweezers are used maybe to pluck little hairs out.

Maybe you like to keep.

So I have a few wild hairs.

If I wanted, I could use a tweezer to pluck one out.

A wild hair is a hair that maybe grows in

the wrong spot or grows in a funny direction.

Because I'm getting old.

I have a few hairs on this eyebrow.

You can see in some of my videos.

There's one or two that grow straight

out and they're kind of funny.

If I wanted, I could use tweezers to pluck

them out, but I just keep them trimmed. Okay.

I know you're not old people, and maybe this is too

much information for you, but that's how I do it.

So we have bar soap, which is in the shape of a bar.

So you could use a bar of soap to wash your hands.

You could use a bar of soap in the shower

to wash your body and parts of your body.

Bar soap is hard.

And when you use water with it, you

start to get a bit of a lather. Okay.

So you can see these hands he's lathering up with soap.

We don't use the word lather a lot, but

that is the word we would use to explain

or to talk about a bar of soap.

You get the soap and you use it on your hands until

you have a nice lather and then you rinse it off.

We also have hand soap or liquid soap.

So hand soap, you can squirt some soap

onto your hand, one or two squirts of

soap, and then you do the same thing.

You would wash your hands with that soap. Body wash.

So someone asked about this.

When I take a shower, I use a bar of soap.

I use shampoo for my hair.

Some people will use body wash.

I think the thing at the bottom is called aloofa.

So you might put some body wash on

aloofa and use that to wash yourself.

Body wash is really just soap in liquid form.

And then again, as with all soaps and those

kinds of things, you will pick one where you

really, really like the way it smells.

So body wash is another way to clean yourself when

you're having a shower or when you're having a bath.

Probably more common in the shower because when you have a

bath, kind of the water has some soap in it and

you still use soap in the bath, of course.

So let's talk a little bit about makeup.

I'm not a makeup expert, but of course, makeup is something

that women put on when they want to look good.

In some countries.

I've heard men wear some makeup as well.

It's not common in Canada, but I know in some

cultures it's common for men to also wear some makeup.

Makeup is, of course, I'm just going

to go over the three common things.

We have mascara.

Mascara is something you put on your

eyelashes at the front of your eyelid.

You have your eyelash, and mascara will color

your eyelash, but it will also make it

look a little bigger and longer.

Okay, so it's hard to see my eyelashes.

They're a little bit blonde, but

mascara would make them look bigger.

Eyeshadow goes on the eyelid around the eye

just to kind of make your eye a

little more defined and maybe more attractive.

Some people really find mascara and eyeshadow makes

the eyes very pleasing to look at. Very beautiful.

And then we have lipstick as well that goes on

the lips to make your lips look a different color.

Now, there are many more products

when it comes to makeup.

There's foundation and concealer and blush and all

kinds of things that you can use.

But to me, these are kind of the three

most common that you might see someone use.

Mascara, eyeshadow, and lipstick.

And then, of course, we have hair.

What do I use to trim my facial hair?

So this is called a beard.

This is a mustache.

All of this is called facial hair.

You can use a razor.

You might have an electric shaver.

You might call it an electric razor, but

that's what you would use to shave.

So you use a razor to shave.

When I shave, I use a little bit

of shaving cream sometimes or just some soap

so that the razor slides smoothly.

And you might say, bob, you have a beard and mustache.

Why do you shave?

Well, I shave here and I shave here.

Actually, I have a little bit of stubble here.

Right now.

I don't know if you can see that.

So I probably should have shaved today, but I shave

to here and I shave right above my beard here.

I put a little bit of soap or shaving cream

on, and then I use a razor to shave those

areas of my body just so that my beard and

mustache, so it looks a little bit trim.

But yes, you would use a razor and

shaving cream in order to shave those areas.

Now, there might be other areas

of your body that you shave.

I'm not going to go into too much

detail, but you might shave your armpits.

Some men might shave their back because

they have lots of back hair.

Not as common, but certainly for men, shaving facial hair

is quite common with a razor and some shaving cream.
