Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with Jennifer. Which thing

can we count? Water or a bottle?

A bottle. Right? One bottle, two bottles. Which thing can we count? Sand

or a beach?

A beach. One beach, two beaches. Water and sand

are uncountable. Let's practice using countable and uncountable nouns.

It's time to learn some basic grammar through conversation.

So, very quickly, let's do a review because you need to remember --

What can we count? What can we not count? And that's the difference between "many"

and "much." Okay? So, for example, just tell me what do you see?

Many flowers? You see many flowers. Beautiful red flowers. I think they're tulips.

Okay. What do you see? Many candies. Aha! You could...if you say

"candies." All different kinds of candies. Many candies.

But all together, we could also say

"much" or "a lot." There's a lot of candy. Candy is one of those words, like a group.

Fruit, candy, pasta. Right? Lots of food categories are uncountable. That's a

lot of candy. But you could say, "Oh! Many candies."

Because there's different types. Okay? What do you see in that picture?

Many shoes.

There are many shoes and many boots. Many different kinds.

That's a city. Tell me about it. What do you see in that city photo?

Much buildings?

Many. Many?

Why? Can we count buildings? Yes. There are many buildings and also

look at all the lights. Many or much lights?

Much lights? Well, if in this picture there are many windows...in every window

there's light. So, these are things that we count. Look

at all the lights. Because there are different ones. Right?

Or we can say in this room, "Oh, there's too much light."

"There's not enough light." Because we're speaking here in this

place. But in this photo, there's lots of little

lights. Many lights. We talk about the city lights.

Like the city lights of New York or Boston...how pretty they are.

Much pasta.

There's so much pasta. There's so much pasta.

Okay. What do you see?

Many necklace.

Many necklaces. Necklaces. Many necklaces. Uh-huh. So, "many" and "much" depends on whether it's

countable or uncountable. So, now let's put it

together with "too" and see problems, like there are too

many tourists. In this photo, what's the problem? Why are

people sitting on the train? What's the problem?

Crowded. Too crowded.

It's too crowded. There are too many people inside, so they're going

on top. Look at that. Wow. Wow! Too many. Okay. Um.

Do you see that sugar? Can you put that sugar in your coffee?

Too much. Too much sugar. That's too much sugar

for one person. Yes. Maybe for a group it's okay, but that's too much sugar for

one person. Okay. Um, would you enjoy

living in this house? Mm-hmm. You would! I don't know. Maybe for one day.

A whole year, that would be tough. Could you live in that house? Yes. Oh, you could!

Come on! After six months, I think, would you get tired?

Yes. Yeah. Think about it. I think um...

Too big.

It's too big. I think it's too much space. Yeah. Too many rooms.

Okay. You can live here, but you have to clean it.

Do you want to live here? No. There's too much to clean. There are

too many rooms to clean. and there's too much space. Right? So,

yeah, it's nice for a day. What's that? Vegetables. Would you enjoy that pizza?

Fruit...we can say, um, "a lot of fruit" "too much fruit." But "vegetables" we can count.

Yeah. Yeah. So, there are many vegetables. Actually, do you think there are too many?

Or does that look good? Many? Too many? Are there too many

vegetables? No, no. Not too much. There are just enough.

Do you think there are enough? Yeah. Looks good. Yeah. I think, um, it looks

great. There are many vegetables, but there...

for me, there's not enough meat!

Okay. Last question. Okay. This is a beautiful place. Mm-hmm. Yes. Beautiful.

Okay. Imagine you can go here on your next vacation.

Lovely. You can take your husbands.

How much time is enough?

Ten days. Ten days is enough. Is that enough for you? Do you want more? Do you want less?

Seven days. Seven days. How about two weeks?

Um, one month. Is that too much? It's too much.

Too much. Really?

Um, it's beautiful, but for you, is it too quiet or too far?

Or is it perfect? It's perfect... for 10 days. For 10 days.

For seven years. Seven years?! Seven days.

Seven days. Um, for a month maybe that's too much. Why?

Too far. Yeah. I also think they don't have the internet.

So, for seven to ten days, maybe two weeks, but a whole month...

that's hard. How about you? Would you like to stay at that beach for

a week? How about a month? Is that too much time?

I think many people would like to stay there for a long weekend.

We use "many" before countable nouns. There were so many people.

There were many flowers.

We use "much" before uncountable nouns. There's so much pasta. That's too much

candy. Note how we use a singular verb with an uncountable noun.

We can use "a lot of" before countable and uncountable nouns. I saw a lot of

people. I ate a lot of candy. In fast speech,

"a lot of" sounds like "allotuv." A lot of. You may also hear "alotta." A lot of.

I saw a lot of people. I ate a lot of candy.

Remember we can also use "enough" before countable and

uncountable nouns. Were there enough seats?

There weren't enough seats for everyone. Was there enough candy? There wasn't

enough candy for all the children.

Look at the words and sort them. Which words are countable

and which words are uncountable?

Here are the answers.

Now help me choose the right words to describe some photos.

There are too many books. There isn't enough space.

There are too many tourists, but they're all having a lot of fun.

Please don't add too much salt. Oh no! Do we have enough bowls?

That's a lot of snow. Will he have enough energy to finish?
