Hi there. How are you today? Are you ready to study?

Ladies,

you two are friends. Right? And I'm new. I'm someone new. The first time

you need to say hello and you need to tell names. Who are you? What's your name, right?

Sometimes I

might know one person.

I know Flavia, but I don't know her, so you need to tell me. Who is that? And what do you say?

So you could say, "Jennifer, this is Andreia."

This is...

Jennifer, this is Andreia.

Or you can say, "This is my friend Andreia."

This is my friend Andreia. And then you repeat and reverse. So: Jennifer, this is Andreia.

Andreia, Jennifer.

Andrea (pause),

Jennifer.

Jennifer this is Andreia. Andreia, Jennifer.

Okay, same thing. If I know you,

Okay, I don't know her. You have to tell me. "Jennifer, this is..."

Sometimes we shake hands in the U.S.

Sometimes not. If someone gives a hand, shake.

Try again and this time we'll shake hands. Who's that?

Jennifer, this is Flavia. Flavia, Jennifer. Hi. Hi.

Jennifer, this is Flavia. Flavia, this is Jennifer. No? You can. You can. You could say, "Jennifer, this is Flavia. Flavia, this is Jennifer."

Or: Jennifer, Flavia. Flavia, Jennifer.

Hey. Hi. And that's all.

Okay, so often

when we're all

friends, it's all

relaxed, we just use "this." This is Flavia. This is Jennifer. That's all. And then we use the same greetings:

Hey. Hi. Hello.

Right? All the same hellos. So after you do the introductions,

people might say different things, like, "Hi. How are you?"

"Good to meet you."

Or "nice to meet you." Try that.

Okay, this time

introduce me. Who is that?

Hi Jennifer. This is Andreia. Andreia, Jennifer.

Hi. Hi. Good to meet you. Nice to meet you.

Who is that?

Okay. Again, sometimes they shake hands. Ladies, sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Sometimes we just wave.

Watch the other person. If they just wave, you wave. They smile; you smile. If they give a hand,

you give your hand and shake. Just watch. Men almost always shake [hands]. Oh, yeah. It depends. Just watch.

What's what did what do other people do?

If they say, "Good to meet you"

or "How are you?" you could say, "Good. Thanks. Nice to meet you." Right? Hi. How are you? Good. Thanks.

Nice to meet you.

So again, if I meet you for the first time, she says, "Jennifer, this is Andreia. Andreia, Jennifer.

Hi, how are you? You can say, "Good. Thanks. Nice to meet you." " Good to meet you."

Yeah. If you say, "Good to meet you, nice to meet you," you could say, "You too." Right?

Yeah, you too. Good to meet. Yeah. You too. Yeah.

Often we say, "Hello. How are you? Good to meet you." And then we might have

more questions if there's time.

All right. We want to know more

information, for example:

Do you live around here?

Do you live around here? It's just casual. Good. Good to meet you. Do you live around here? Oh.

Yeah, it's just, I'm not asking for your address.

I'm not asking where exactly you live, but just...casual, relaxed. Do you live around here? Yeah.

Here in Boston. You don't have to tell me specific information. No, don't give me your address.

So I'd say, "Nice to meet you. You too. Do you live around here?"

"Yeah." You say, "Yeah," or well, "Not far."

Sometimes...Oh what else do we want to know? We're in Boston. You might ask, "Are you from Boston? Are you from Massachusetts?"

So when you first meet a person, you can ask questions.

Which questions?

Nice questions.

Questions that are safe.

Questions

that don't

need a lot of information. I can't say, "Hi. I'm Jennifer. Where do you live? Where you work? What's your address?" No.

It's like, "Do you live around here?" "Yeah.

Not far." Yeah. "Are you from Boston?"

"Yeah, yeah."

Or "Yeah, I live in Boston." Or you can say, "I'm from Brazil." But general information, general information.

Okay, let's try this. You can introduce me and we'll go to this and this. We'll ask questions. Okay?

Start here.

Hi Jennifer. This is my friend Flavia.

You can say, "Not far. Not far." Right? Like not right here, but not far. Not far. Okay, introduce me.

Um, it's also safe to ask:

What do you do? Or...oh, what do you do? Are you a student?

You can ask those questions. What do you do? Are you a student? Right? If I ask, "Oh, do you live around here?"

"I'm from Brazil." "Are you a student?" "Yeah." That's safe. Those are all questions. Um, what do you do?

I'm a student.

Okay, what do you do? I'm a student. Are you a student?

Yes.

Okay, so we might ask: Do you live around here? Are you from Boston? Are you from

Massachusetts? Where are you from? Where are you from?

And you say, "Brazil."

Oh. And the person says, "Oh."

Great. Nice. Interesting. Okay?

You might also hear:

Do you live...? Do you live around here?

Do you live here in Boston? Where are you from? They're all the same. Right?

So listen and repeat. Are you from Boston? Yes.

Listen and repeat the question.

Good. One more time.

Mm-hmm. And other questions could be like, "What do you do? Are you a student?" Try this one. What do you do?

So you can ask me. Nice to meet you. You too, and you ask me -- What do you do? I'm a teacher. You say, "Oh."

"Oh, that's interesting." "Oh, nice." Those are typical responses. Like "Oh, nice. Good." "Oh, that's interesting." Right?

That's interesting. Oh, interesting.

Oh, good. Interesting.

Interesting. Oh, interesting. Oh, nice. Nice. Nice. Good.

These are all polite responses. Like, "Where are you from?" "Brazil." "Oh, nice."

Now you try. This is your friend Nate. Introduce me.

Nice to meet you, Nate.

Now I'll introduce you to my friend Kate.

Kate says hi. Good to meet you.
