English with Jennifer’s Review of the S92 Plus Amplifier by WinBridge

Hi everyone. I'm Jennifer from English with  Jennifer. This will be no ordinary review.  

Learning opportunities are all around  us. You just have to look for them.  

Seize them when you can. So, when WinBridge  asked me to test out their voice amplifier,  

I said, "Okay. As long as I get to teach English  while I do it." They agreed. Let me state right  

from the beginning that I am not getting paid  for this review. The way I see it, I get free  

use of a really cool device just for explaining  how it works. I always get excited when I receive  

packages. It creates that birthday-like feeling.  I received my S92 Plus Amplifier through Amazon.

So, what is an amplifier? Well, what does it  mean to amplify something, like your voice?

To make something stronger. Amplify. Amplifier.  An amplifier is something that amplifies.  

What's another noun form? The  process of amplifying something.

Amplification.

Testing, testing. 1, 2, 3. I think it's  working. Let's do a quick exercise with  

word forms. Did you see my grammar lesson  on intensifiers? What's an intensifier?  

It's a word that intensifies or strengthens the  meaning, for example, "very" or "extremely."  

And what's the process of intensifying  something? Intensification. Intensifier,  

intensify, intensification. Watch my grammar  lesson on intensifiers and downtoners.

To modify means to make a change.  And what's the change called?

Modification. In grammar, adjectives  and adverbs modify other words.  

They add description. Do you know  another name for adjectives and adverbs?

Modifiers. You can continue this exercise  on your own. Tell me whole word families  

using the suffixes -ify, -ier, and -cation.

Use these words: purify, pacifier, qualification.

Write your answers in the comments.

Okay. So, let's get back to the  unboxing. I opened the package,  

and I found a black case inside. I'd call it sleek  and sturdy. "Sleek" means smooth and stylish.  

"Sturdy" means it's made well; it's  strong, so it won't break easily. A sleek,  

sturdy black case. Remember that opinion  adjectives come before other adjectives.  

I cut off the paper band wrapped around  the case, and then I unzipped it.  

Inside I found a user manual and a small  catalog of WinBridge products. A user manual  

tells you how to use a product. A catalog  shows you products that are available.

WindBridge packed everything well. The soft  foam cushioned every piece in the case.

I appreciate the careful wrapping, too.

That's the speaker, the actual  amplifier. They give you two headsets.  

The top parts are called brackets. Chargers  are included, and then, of course, there are  

the two microphones that you attach to the  brackets. Then you have complete headsets.

They carefully wrapped things in plastic.

Everything was carefully wrapped. They  carefully packed things in the case.

I carefully unpacked everything.

Once everything was unpacked, it  was time to read the user manual.  

I know that some people consider  themselves very tech-savvy,  

that is, very knowledgeable of technology.  But I suggest reading the instructions,  

the warnings, and the troubleshooting  tips before you start using a new device.

I recommend reading the instructions.

I suggest looking at the product description.  

I recommend that you take the time  to become familiar with the product.

I suggest that you learn how to  troubleshoot, that is, how to fix problems.

Setup wasn't hard. I'd say  the product is user-friendly.

I quickly learned how to charge  the two headsets and the speaker.

Everything was fully charged in less than an hour.

The chargers are provided. The  microphones on the headset are detachable.  

You can easily attach and detach them.

Testing, testing. 1, 2, 3.  Might not be loud enough.

All right. It's all good. Good to go.  

The headsets are obviously wireless. Not having  to drag a wire around is very convenient.

Two wireless headsets means that two people  could be performing or speaking together.

They say the amplifier is strong enough to  provide sound for groups of up to 150 people.  

Well, I don't have 150 people  in my home to test it out on,  

but my daughter and I put on our  headsets, and we walked around the house.  

My son sat in his room and listened with the  speaker. I can say that the range is pretty  

good. I was very impressed that the walls and the  floors of the house didn't obstruct the signal.

The range refers to how far the signal can reach.  I was about 20-30 feet away from the speaker.  

As I said, the walls, floors, and doors  didn't obstruct or block the signal.

The speaker is portable, and there's a shoulder  strap so you could easily carry it around with  

you. I suppose that would be useful for a tour  guide or a teacher on a field trip, for example.

"Portable," by the way, means what?

Easy to carry. Let's do another quick vocabulary  quiz. Let's form words with the suffix -able.  

"-able," which means "able to do something."

If you can afford something, it's  affordable. If you can break something,

it's breakable.

If you can fold something, it's...

foldable. If you can predict  something, it's predictable.

Can you name other adjectives that end with the  suffix -able? Post your examples in the comments.  

Okay. Once the portable speaker and wireless  headsets were charged, I had to pair them.  

That means they had to connect in order to  work together. It's a Bluetooth connection.

So, you have to turn both the speaker  and the headset or headsets on.

Bluetooth is waiting for a connection. Next, you  push the button on the speaker marked UHF. Then  

you press the Bluetooth button on the headset. The  pairing should be quick. Bluetooth is connected.

Testing, testing. 1, 2, 3.  Testing. Let's get louder.  

I think the buttons on the speaker are clearly  marked, and they're easy to reach and use.  

You can easily turn the volume up or down.

I didn't carry the speaker around. I just  walked around with the headset. You know,  

something funny happens when you're mic'd up.  Personally, I feel like I'm in a music video.  

I either want to do karaoke or I want to sing and  dance like Britney Spears or Lady Gaga. [singing]

Well, besides karaoke lovers and tour  guides, I think the voice amplifier would  

work well for people at a variety of indoor  and outdoor events. What would you use it for?

There are a few other features of the voice  amplifier, and I haven't tested them all out, but  

here's one other use. You can pair a device with  the speaker and then play audio files. You can do  

this if your built-in speaker can't reach a high  enough volume. For, example, I can pair my phone  

with the speaker and then play audio files from my  phone. What do you have? Mp3s? Wav files? Listen.

Bluetooth is waiting for a  connection. Bluetooth is connected.

The user manual is helpful,  but there are some mistakes.  

Let's fix three items. Here's the first. A title.

The first thing I'd do is delete the question  mark. Now think of the grammar. How to  

do what? You need a base verb. How to charge.  It's a specific speaker. Let's add an article.  

How to charge the speaker. You can leave  this title in caps. I might use title case.

Here's the second task.

It's okay that this is not a complete  sentence because this is a list of problems.  

This is in the troubleshooting section.  But we do need subject-verb agreement.

Loses. It loses power.

Here's the third task. This is part of  the instructions. I see the reference  

to the microphone as specific, so I would use the  definite article, and I would break this into two  

sentences. Turn on the U8 wireless microphone.  And I think it's clearer to say, "You will see  

a constant blue light." Or, "The blue light will  be constant," as opposed to flashing, for example.
