🚗Washing the Car☀️A Summer Vocabulary Lesson with JenniferESL

Hi everyone. We just got back from our family vacation. We flew to Bermuda, and

we had to leave our car out in a parking lot for several days. It got kind of

dirty, so it needs to be washed. Where we live, we have two choices: We can drive

our car to a local car wash and pay about $10. It can be a little less if you

just want to wash the car. If you want to polish the wheels, wax your car to a

shine, and also wash the undercarriage, you'll pay about fifteen dollars or more.

The other choice is to wash the car in your driveway. It's summertime, so it's

the more affordable option. So I'm going to pull the car out of the garage and

get started. I also want to see if there's anyone around to help. By the way,

you'll hear American English speakers use two different pronunciations of this

word. I use both. I don't know if growing up in western Pennsylvania was a factor.

Perhaps. And, of course, the British have their own pronunciation, a third

pronunciation of this word. You can use online tools like YouGlish and Forvo

to hear different models. If you'd like, try saying it both ways: garage (zh)/ garage (j)

Since we're talking about washing the car, you may be curious about the

differences between these words: wash, clean, polish, and wax. Washing is with

soap and water. I'm going to wash the car. I'm going to wash the exterior of the car.

Cleaning can just be making things neat and tidy. Later I'm going to clean

the seats. I'm going to vacuum them to pick up crumbs of food and dog fur.

Polishing and waxing are similar. We can polish the wheels and the hubcaps. We rub

them until they shine. People also polish things like good leather shoes and

expensive silverware. Waxing is with a special cleaner. We can wax the hood and

the sides of the car until they shine. Waxing also protects the paint. So what

do I need to wash the car? I could use my bare hands, but I don't want harsh

chemicals to touch my skin. I'm very sensitive, so I'll wear rubber gloves.

I'll also need a bucket of clean water, a garden hose, some special soap, a sponge,

some old towels, and wax that I'll spray on and wipe off.

So today I mostly want to make sure the exterior is clean. The inside of the car

is already pretty clean because my kids and I did a thorough job last month. We

wiped down the seats. We vacuumed. We took out the floor mats and washed them.

But I still think I need to clean the windows today.

How about a quick game of opposites? Okay? I'll say a word, and you give me the

antonym. Ready? Exterior - interior. Clean -

dirty. Shiny - dull. Wet - dry. How about neat and tidy?

Maybe messy, untidy, sloppy. Harsh, as in harsh chemicals.

How about gentle, as in gentle on the skin? Now let's switch to synonyms, words

with similar meanings. Interior - inside. Exterior - outside. Shiny -

How about bright? What's another way to say, "My arm hurts from all the rubbing

and wiping"? How about, "My arm is sore from all the rubbing and wiping"?

Is there a difference between rubbing and wiping? I'd say yes. Rubbing is with

effort. We press or push. We can rub back and forth. We can rub in circles. When

people have headaches, they sometimes rub their temples. We wipe things to make

them clean and dry. We can wipe off dirt. We can wipe dishes after washing them.

We can wipe our forehead if we get sweaty.

Well, I think I'm mostly done. I've washed the car from top to bottom. I've rinsed

off all the soap, I've wiped the car dry, and I've waxed it to a shine. What do you think?
