5 Great Songs for English Fluency | How to Learn English With Music

hello guys and welcome back to my youtube channel  in this video i wanted to talk to you about music  

and how you can use songs to learn english i  think for the majority of people music plays  

a very important role in their lives but what  if you could learn english and listen to music  

at the same time it's actually possible and in  this video i wanted to share some tips with you  

that will help you turn your favorite songs into a  learning opportunity before i start with the tips  

i wanted to share a little story of how living  here in mexico city made me think of music in a  

different way i never really listened to music  a lot before and even right now i only do it  

with friends i prefer to listen to interviews or  podcasts but here in mexico city so many people  

are in love with music when mexicans hear a song  they like they start to dance to it or sing along  

and it's just so fascinating to me and even though  i can't really call myself a music fan i attended  

coldplay's concert here in mexico city and the  experience was just out of this world so now i use  

music to study spanish and i really hope you're  gonna do the same thing with english because  

it's one of the easiest and most interesting  ways to learn let's start with my first tip  

listen to simple songs in english when you're  only beginning your language journey it's  

important to start easy and small for example you  can listen to nursery rhymes which are traditional  

songs for children the most famous song in this  category is baby shark and guess did you know  

that baby shark is actually the most viewed video  on youtube with over 10 billion views it's just  

crazy to me if you don't like children's songs  don't worry because there are a lot of simple  

songs just regular songs for english learners  you can just google songs for english learners  

and you will find a lot of great recommendations i  personally always recommend to my students adeles  

and add chiron songs because they use a lot of  great phrasal verbs and idioms and their language  

is pretty easy to understand for example in the  song thinking out loud we can see this beautiful  

line cause honey your soul can never grow old  it's ever green if something is evergreen it's  

always fresh and popular for example friends is  an evergreen tv show as you guys already noticed  

i really want you to spend some time looking up  the lyrics of a song because it's very important  

to establish these connections in your brain  between the written language and the language  

you're hearing and after you've looked up the  lyrics try to sing along because this way you'll  

be getting familiar with the rhythm of a language  it will help you learn how the words are linked  

together in connected speech and as you guys know  i always talk about the importance of connected  

speech because this is something that can make you  sound very natural in english for example the song  

new rules by dua lipa is a great resource for  practicing connected speech there she sings two  

don't let him in you have to kick him out again  so instead of seeing him in every single phrase  

don't let him in she drops the h sound because  she's using connected speech so she's saying  

don't let him in instead of don't let him in and  the same is true for the second phrase you'll have  

to kick him out again instead of saying him she  says m you'll have to kick him kick him kick him  

out again so this is what we call connected speech  and my favorite part with learning with songs is  

when you can actually sing a song without looking  at the lyrics and when you can sing it well when  

you can reproduce the same sounds when you can use  connected speech because this way you're actually  

learning you're using music to learn english  my tip number three that can help you learn  

english with songs is listen to music to learn  new idioms and phrasal verbs guys phrasal verbs  

are such an important part of english and you have  to know which phrasal verbs to use and music is  

a great resource to learn them but here we gotta  be careful because a lot of textbooks for example  

are using very outdated very strange idioms and  phrasal verbs and i'm gonna tell you a funny story  

now a couple of weeks ago i was having a class  with one of my students and he told me how once  

he wanted to impress his american friends and  he used the idiom like the expression cockahoop  

and i was like what does it even mean like i've  never heard this expression before and he was  

like yep my americans friends were also like what  what does it mean everyone was laughing because  

this expression is british and extremely funny  basically it means very surprised as i understand  

but again guys in america no one would use this  expression and that's exactly why you need to know  

which idioms and which expressions to use in your  daily life so coming back to music and the song  

someone you loved by louis capaldi you can learn  so many amazing idioms that native speakers use  

all the time for example in the chorus he sings  i let my guard down and then you pull the rug  

let your guard down means to relax when you  should be careful and alert for example it  

takes me a long time to let my guard down  and get close to people pull the rug means  

to suddenly and unexpectedly remove any support  assistance or help from someone for example i  

felt like someone had pulled the rug from under  my feet when my health insurance company said  

it was not going to pay for my medical bills so  i felt like my insurance company was removing  

all support because obviously insurance is  important because medical bills are very high  

reason number four why learning english through  music is important is that it can help you improve  

your writing skills in english i think songs can  be a great inspiration for thinking about life  

in general and then writing down your thoughts on  paper after listening to a song you can jot down  

whatever comes to your head it works even better  if a song is used in a famous movie or a tv show  

for example the song shallow by lady gaga and  bradley cooper is the soundtrack of the hit film  

as star is born this incredible song offers  english learners a slow paced intro as well  

as a wide variety of new vocabulary i always  recommend people listen to the song first write  

down their thoughts then watch the movie and then  write out their thoughts again because probably  

their thoughts are gonna be a little bit different  right because with the movie we're also gonna see  

the plot line and the visual picture and maybe now  what we think of the song is completely different  

i think it's a very interesting prompt  for creative writing and i always do this  

exercise when i want to do something  fun in english and when i feel like  

just journaling about my day is boring because  i hope you remember guys that i really like  

journaling and i do it almost every single day and  sometimes i invent some funny prompts for myself  

like veronica today you're gonna write about your  favorite song or veronica today we're gonna write  

about the song from this movie or that movie and  it's pretty fun it's very creative and it helps  

you enrich your vocabulary and my last tip is use  lyrics training to make english learning more fun  

when i was preparing for this video i was looking  for like a very interesting fun website or app to  

help you guys learn english with songs and i was  actually so surprised and happy when i found the  

website called lyrics training basically it's the  website where you can learn english or many other  

languages through music and through looking at  their lyrics if you choose to learn english they  

even specify if the song is in british american  or australian english which is pretty incredible  

so the part that i like the most is that on the  website you basically play a game during which you  

fill in the missing words and the harder the level  the more missing words you'll need to fill in but  

for me personally i like the intermediate level  the best because you're enjoying the music you're  

learning english and also you're filling in the  words so for me it's the perfect combination of  

learning and fun so let me show you how i use this  website by using a song by harry styles as it was  

as you can see they have four different game modes  here and as i just mentioned guys my favorite one  

is intermediate so i press here press here to  start the game okay so as you can see guys the  

video pauses and i have to write down back holding  me back and then the next line is gravity's  

holding me back i love this website again it's  so fun it's like the perfect place to learn  

a language and also have fun and it's not just  about english you know they have more languages  

here and i don't know i'm just obsessed with this  website and i highly recommend you guys to check
