I Decided to Learn the British Accent and Here’s What Happened | British Accent Secrets

hello guys and welcome back to my  youtube channel today i decided  

to make a really fun video where i'm  attempting to learn the british accent

guys as you all know i'm trying to speak with  an american accent but when i was in school  

i would start the british accent because this  is something we always learn in russia and i'm  

really interested to know do you learn the british  english or the american english at schools so let  

me know in the comments a lot of people have been  asking me why i chose the american accent guys to  

be honest i just think the american accent is  easier than the british accent because first  

of all it's just everywhere nowadays right when  you listen to music when you watch movies or tv  

shows most likely they're gonna be in the american  accent so that's why i decided to challenge myself  

and try to master the british accent obviously i  understand that i'm not gonna become good at it  

in just like a couple of days because it took  me years of practice to achieve this level in  

american english but to make this video a little  bit more fun i decided to use british humor here  

so i'm gonna read some light-hearted  british jokes to make this video more  

entertaining for you guys so let me start with  this first joke i haven't practiced at all this  

is my first day trying to learn anything about  the british accent so guys please be patient with  

me why is england described as being a wet country  the queen has rain the queen has reigned over over  

over ah the queen has reigned over it for decades  so yeah guys it was pretty bad because honestly i  

don't really know anything about the british  accent yet the only thing i do know is that i  

shouldn't pronounce the letter r in the words over  and for and it's really really hard for me but

day i'm just gonna go on youtube and google learn  the british accent fast so this is what i'm gonna  

do today we are learning some secret tips to help  you achieve a prison tips it's so interesting like  

it's already a completely different accent like  obviously i'm familiar with the british accent  

and i know how it sounds but i don't know this  whole challenge is just really interesting for me

okay guys i just finished watching my first  ever british accent video first of all guys a  

really important thing that i i don't know why  like i haven't really thought about it is that  

if you want to speak with a good british accent  you also need to use british words for example  

instead of saying trash i'll have to use rubbish  all the time right and this is something i haven't  

really thought about i guess obviously to really  have a good british accent i need to master  

these three sounds first is the sound  the second one is r and the third one is  

on so with the toe it is going to be a little bit  challenging because obviously i'm used to saying  

this sound in an american way for example  in the word city but in the british accent  

i have to say city also i have to get used to  not using rs all the time for example in the word  

party instead of saying party i'll have to say  party last but not least here is the sound o  

for example instead of saying hot like it's really  hot today british english i'll have to say hot  

it's really hot today honestly guys i hope you're  not laughing too hard with my british accent i'm  

just learning and it's a fun challenge for me you  just think of this video as something entertaining

okay guys so today is the next day and officially  day two of me trying to work on my british accent  

so honestly in my british accent journey  i actually decided to just like get myself  

acquainted with the british culture more because  obviously i understand that this video is more for  

entertaining purposes i know that i will not be  able to master the british accent in just one week  

so today i decided to get myself acquainted  with the british humor and i watched quite a  

lot of videos on youtube about the british humor  about how to understand british jokes because  

i feel like people in the uk are especially famous  for their humor so obviously we all know how  

sarcastic and ironic brits like to be so this is  actually one of their most popular characteristics  

a lot of people when coming to the uk they notice  that sarcasm is a really big part of their culture  

and especially when you make a sarcastic joke and  you say that was sarcasm another interesting thing  

that i've noticed too is that british humor is  really witty or as british people might say witty  

actually this is like a word that british  people use a lot even when they describe  

books for example if a person's humor is witty  it's a really really good compliment next thing  

that i've learned about the british humor is  that it's characterized by self-deprecation so  

self-deprecation is when you're saying bad things  about yourself but obviously they're joking for  

example we all know how bad the weather is in  the uk so this is a form of self-deprecating  

humor instead of saying that your country is such  a great place to visit brits might say yeah you  

know great britain is a great country if you like  bad weather if you like bad food for example this  

way they're making fun of themselves so now i feel  like it's time for me to read another joke and  

obviously try to do so with a good british accent  why doesn't england have a designated kidney bank  

they have a liverpool honestly guys to me every  single time i try to speak with a british accent  

i feel like it's a joke because obviously i'm very  very new to all of this so please don't be harsh  

on me i'm trying really hard but i feel like i am  failing but i also feel like it's my second day so  

obviously it takes time it takes practice and  motivation so yeah i'll see you guys tomorrow

so guys today's the day when i'll be taking  an english class on lingoda to ask the teacher

basically there are a couple of reasons why some  people choose the british accent or the american  

accent and obviously the most common one is that  they just like this pronunciation right and so  

sometimes maybe we don't even need to be logical  if you feel like you just like how this acts and  

sounds maybe it's a good enough reason you know  maybe it's enough for you to start exploring this  

accent to start learning more and more about  it and my second question was about actually  

mastering this or that accent and so the teacher  told me that obviously the best thing to do is  

listen for example if you do decide to learn the  british accent you should watch as many british  

tv shows as possible you should listen to music  where the singer clearly sings with a british  

accent and just you know try to immerse yourself  into this accent and obviously immersion is very  

important and i completely agree with her and so  guys if you also want to improve your english in

okay today is the next day of my british  accent journey and honestly guys i think  

i'm gonna finish this video on this day or else  this video is just gonna take forever because  

obviously accent journey takes a long time but  today i actually wanted to share a cool technique  

with you guys that i'm using myself right now  it's called shadowing shadowing is something that  

i used a lot when i was first trying to work on  my american accent and i still use it like almost  

every single time i watch a show or read a book  especially when i watch a show because shadowing  

requires you to repeat after a speaker and so  i follow this really cool channel on youtube  

called jack edwards jack makes book related  videos and as i love reading i love his content  

and so right now i'm gonna click on his most  recent video and try to repeat after him and  

this is what we call shadowing and he actually  something i forgot to mention he's from london  

so he has a really good british accent so let's  try gorgeous gorgeous girls read books about love  

even gorgeous gorgeous girls read books about  love so first of all i can already notice how  

differently he says the word girls so instead of  saying this er girls he says girls no one loves  

them no one loves them love is in the air right  now if it's like love and then the air right now  

and so i feel like this is exactly what i'm  gonna do i'm just gonna try to shadow after him  

and hope for the best because i believe that  shadowing can really improve your accent if you  

actually use this technique so yeah guys i think  i'm going to finish this video on this note as you  

can see during the last couple of days all i did  was work on my british accent honestly guys it was  

quite a journey i learned a lot about the british  accent and i also learned a lot about the british  

humor too i hope this video motivated you to start  working on your pronunciation or your accent in
