5 Effective Techniques to Memorize New Vocabulary in English | How to Learn New Words in English

hello guys and welcome back to my youtube channel  in this video i wanted to talk to you about  

memorizing new vocabulary in english i know that  for a lot of you guys this process of learning  

new words in english sometimes seems very boring  and tiring and so in this video i want to share  

amazing tips with you that will help you learn all  the new words you have to learn but at the same  

time you know do it as efficiently as possible  before we jump into the tips i just want to let  

you guys know that a year ago i already published  two videos all about memorizing new vocabulary in  

english the first video was full of amazing  memorization tips so i highly recommend you

about the things that can help you learn the  new words in english faster the first strategy  

that works for a lot of people is using memory  techniques and one really famous memory technique  

is called mnemonics make sure to not pronounce  the first m here we just say mnemonics that's it  

this technique helps you remember the information  by connecting it to something more meaningful and  

structured i guess and usually a lot of people  use some funny sentences they come up with funny  

examples or they also use some silly pictures  one of the most famous mnemonics that you guys  

have probably heard about or even learned yourself  when you were like a little kid at school is the  

one with rainbow colors because sometimes for  kids it's hard to remember you know the correct  

order of the colors in a rainbow so that's why we  have this mnemonic roy g bev roy j bev red orange  

yellow green blue indigo violet and a lot  of kids memorize it this way they just say  

roy g biv it sounds like a name so it helps us  memorize the order of the colors a lot faster  

mnemonics for learning new vocabulary are also  sometimes called link words because you're linking  

a word in english to the picture or to like a  word in your native language all in your head to  

create this link word mnemonic you should use this  two-step process first say this word out loud over  

and over again and also while saying this word  out loud try to think about what it reminds you  

of for example maybe this word in english reminds  you of something in your native language or maybe  

it just reminds you of a picture or some kind of  animal or like anything really for example imagine  

you have trouble remembering the correct spelling  of certain words and this is actually how native  

speakers often use mnemonics especially during  spelling bees spelling bees are these competitions  

at schools where kids they participate in teams  and they try to spell different words and the  

team that spells the most words wins so let's  look at this picture together the first word is  

arithmetic let's imagine that you don't remember  how to spell this word correctly like and you  

really need to learn the correct spelling for  example for your exam so to remember the spelling  

you just need to remember this funny sentence  a rat in the house may eat the ice cream and as  

you can see each word corresponds to the letter  in the word arithmetic for example the letter  

a the first letter is for the word a then the next  letter r is for the word rat the third letter i  

is the word in etc so this is one of the ways  how people usually try to remember the correct  

spelling because sometimes certain words in  english they're spelled in such a weird way and  

when you have to prepare for an exam like during  an examination obviously you can use a dictionary  

you can't use your phone either to check the  correct spelling of the word so that's why people  

come up with these very useful and funny mnemonics  the next thing you can do is create this silly  

image in your mind and guys it should be like as  exaggerated as silly as possible because usually  

this is how we remember things because coming  back to this example with the word arithmetic  

i think now i remember this word so clearly  because of this picture of a rat eating ice  

cream which is just absolutely insane so now  whenever you want to recall the correct spelling  

of the word arithmetic or even if you want to just  remember this word you immediately think of this  

picture of a rad eating ice cream and it gives you  a clue about how to write this word correctly i  

know guys this whole method sounds kind of silly  but it works surprisingly well for some people  

and this is actually the technique that a lot of  mathematicians use or people who have to remember  

lots of information really fast for example i  think you watch those videos where a person has  

to remember a card deck like remember the position  of all the cards real fast so usually i think they  

use mnemonics to remember all the cards as fast as  possible and to obviously remember them correctly  

the second thing that can help you learn the  words faster is putting them in context instead  

of just memorizing word by word you know as a  list like this word and its translation to your  

native language or for example the explanation  the meaning in english you should try to come up  

with example sentences and even better is if you  create example sentences that relate to your life  

this is something that i always advise my students  to do and recently i had a class with a student of  

mine from italy and i taught her a great word in  english high flyer and she immediately came up  

with a great example she said i'm a bit of a high  flyer because i consider myself very ambitious  

great example sentence because it relates to your  life she's describing herself and this way she's  

memorizing this word also guys i understand that  sometimes we just don't have any ideas and our  

heads were like i can't like i can't come up with  an example sentence it's so hard like what do i do  

here i really recommend youglish because euglish  shows you the videos with these awards like for  

example the expression high flyer you can just tap  it in into youglish high flyer and they will show  

you a lot of videos for people native speakers  use this expression and how they used it which  

is even more important for example let me just  show you how a woman uses the word high flyer  

on uglish in this video the ceo jimmy trivig and  all the other folks there they were really i mean  

tandem was one of the real high flyer companies in  its day okay she said tandem was one of the real  

high flyer companies in its day it's great  because see instead of saying that tandem  

was a very ambitious company for example she used  a nice expression in english she said that this  

company is a real high fire so as you can see we  can use this expression to describe people and to

new words in english faster is using flashcards  you can create paper flashcards yourself i know  

that a lot of people love doing it you know  themselves it's like a creative process for them  

or you can use different apps we have available  nowadays you can use quizlet for example because  

it's completely free you can have it on your  computer or on your phone and the interface of the  

app is really pretty it's like simple but it has  everything you need and that's why a lot of people  

love quizlet also if you are a bigger nerd i guess  you can use anki because anki is an amazing app  

that uses the space repetition technique but the  interface of this app is super simple and that's  

why i think a lot of people don't really like it  and also if you want to download the app on your  

phone i don't think it's free for your computer  it's completely free but you know to be able to  

have it on your phone i think it's a one-time  purchase but guys actually i used to use on anki  

a lot and i even have a video on my channel all  about anki where i go in depth about anki where  

i show you my decks when i was still in college  and i was actively learning chinese so yeah if you

i know that a lot of teachers don't recommend  using flashcards because you usually put a words  

out of context and you know it's just usually  like the word and it's translation and that's  

it like there is no context but i think also for  some people it works well because you know they  

just want to increase their vocabulary as much  as possible and the context will come when they  

actually use these words when they read something  english or watch something in english and this is  

something that i really recommend you guys do  especially if you love using flashcards so for  

example let's imagine you learn a word to grate  something so naturally you can start exploring  

different recipes in english because this is where  we see this word the most and also you can find  

this kitchen utensil in your home that is called  a grater right so you can say i use a grater  

to grate cabbage or to grate carrots or to even  grate cheese again see what i did here i created  

an example that is based on my life right i said  i use a grater i have a grater in my kitchen and i  

use it when i cook my asian recipes for example  tip number four that can help you learn the new  

words in english faster is writing down all the  new vocabulary so this process of writing things  

down with your hand on paper is something that  works for a lot of people so you can just have a  

notebook where you write all your things down and  instead of using your computer for example a lot  

of people love using google docs and i use google  docs a lot to you know for my work and to actually  

even learn certain things because right now i'm  learning spanish but like day by day i'm just  

realizing that i almost never open those documents  and even when i do like i stare at my computer  

all day every day because i work on my  computer so the last thing i want to do  

is to stare at my computer more because i want to  study spanish and that's why i prefer to have my  

notebook or my bullet journal where i read all  the new spanish words and right now let's move  

on to the last tip which is connected like really  connected to the previous tip so if you're one of  

those people who love writing things down on paper  especially the new vocabulary like you absolutely  

have to try the gold list method let me explain  everything about this method and why i'm currently  

obsessed with it and why i'm using it to study  spanish so the goalless method is a technique  

based on writing things down on paper in your  notebook and it's very popular among polyglots  

because they have to learn a lot of new vocabulary  i think the best thing about this method is that  

you don't actually need to learn anything  it's like a cheap code like you don't learn  

anything but somehow you start you know just  memorizing new words which is incredible and  

this is something that i've noticed happening to  me recently so let me share the secret how to use  

this gold list method correctly first you have  to get an a4 notebook the reason being is that  

we'll be dividing each page into two sections and  that's why we need this one piece of paper to be  

longer than usual so the first thing you do is you  divide a page into four sections for now you'll  

be only working with the first section and the  first section is called your head list usually  

people recommend to include around 20 expressions  there very important guys here write down the date  

because this method is based again on this space  repetition technique and you'll be revising each  

list after 14 days so once you wrote down this  first list that consists of 20 new expressions  

you write down the expressions and then you write  down that translation into your native language  

you can like read all the words a couple of times  but you know just enjoy the process be mindful and  

obviously try not to distract yourself from this  process but you don't need to memorize anything  

really just like create this list and that's it  like you can forget about it for two weeks also  

if you learn the language every day you can create  like next head list for example you can turn the  

page and create the next head list for today right  but you don't again you don't look at the previous  

list it's just there you wrote down the date  and that's it the next time that you're gonna  

come back to it is only gonna be in two weeks so  two weeks have passed now you open your original  

headlist and you quiz yourself and you see how  many words you actually remember usually is going  

to be around 30 so you take all the words that  you don't remember from this headlist and you  

transfer them to the next list it's called  distillation to your first distillation and  

then you wait for two more weeks and then you come  back to this first distillation you quiz yourself  

and you transfer all the words you still don't  remember into your second destination and then  

you repeat the process in two weeks and then you  transfer all the words that you don't remember  

from your second distillation to the third one and  this is how we complete the circle and this is how  

you complete your page and the question is what  do you do with all of these words that you still  

don't remember so what i usually do is first  i think like do i really need them and if the  

answer is yes like i actually do need these words  i create a new headlist with these words from the  

third distillation i really hope you understand  the full technique and you don't think i sound  

extremely confusing but also you can just google  about this technique and read more articles on  

it or watch more videos about it because this  is something that i've been using recently for  

my spanish as i realized that i was a little bit  tired of using anki or quizlet or creating paper  

flashcards and i just wanted a change you know  i just wanted to change and i decided to use  

this technique and also because i just like  writing things down on paper so yeah guys i
