English Pronunciation - E & I

Hi there, my name is Rani and I'm going to teach you English again.

This lesson is a lesson on pronunciation and it's about two vowels.

In English we have the vowels A, E, I, O, U.

If you are from a Spanish speaking country, Japanese speaking country, Korean speaking

country and many other ones, I know that these two vowels are opposite to what we say in

English.

So hopefully this will help you remember them.

The first one is E. I don't have a special technique to help you with this except it

sounds like E. So if you can remember E like that, that's good.

This one's easy.

I have a technique.

This one we actually say "I" like the thing in your head on your face is an eye.

So you can think of it by actually making an "I" above your eye, above the dot.

That's how I remember these two differences in the vowels.

Okay, so let's get into the pronunciation.

This is actually a request that I teach this, so here it is.

You can have in English either B, sorry, EA or you can have EE.

These vowels are the same pronunciation.

We pronounce these all like a double "E" sound.

So let's go through the list and you can repeat after me, beat, heat, meet, feet and sheet.

If we spell this word meet with an EA, it is food, but the way we pronounce it is exactly

the same.

This one is "I will meet you at the station."

This one is "I like to eat meat."

Everything is exactly the same, however the spelling is different.

So that's about the only ones that would have a double meaning for this.

So once again, the pronunciation is like a double "E."

Now, when we want to say words like this, we actually just say "it," but because there's

another consonant in front of us, we have to mix the two together, so we say "bit."

This one is "hit," "mit," "fit," and a very bad word, "shit."

So always remember, this is going to take a separate sound and have an "it" added.

So let's put the two of them together so you can hear the difference between the "E" and

the "I."

And the last one, very careful with this, "sheet" and "shit."

Just to let you know, in the English language, this word, it's a naughty word.

We do use it a lot, but if you're talking to older people or if you're talking to people

who are in a greater position that you are of in authority, they don't like it when you

say this.

So when I was a little girl, if I said this word, I had to put soap on my toothbrush and

brush my teeth with soap just because I said this word.

So you know, don't say it too much.
