English Pronunciation - Words ending with ION

So today, by special request, drum roll please, we have the pronunciation of words that end

in -ion.

Now, if you just look at this word, it looks like we would say -ion, but English, once

again, is not that simple.

We don't say destiny -ion, it doesn't work that way.

This is how we do say this word in English.

At the end of all these words, instead of saying -ion, we're going to actually say - check

this out, this is weird - chin.

I don't know how they came up with this one.

That's right, I-O-N would pronounce it as H-I-N.

Crazy English people that did this.

So, if you use my theory and we change these words in the pronunciation from this word,

we're going to say -tion.

Let's have a go at this first word.

This first word is destination.

If we say it quickly, we say destination.

So, we say destination.

Does anyone know what the word destination means?

Destination means the arrival point.

When you're taking an airplane and you go through customs, they maybe will ask you where

is your destination?

And you can now say, "Oh, I know how to say that word!" and you tell them where it is.

The next word we have, maybe at your job or at your school, you have to do a scary presentation.

How many of you guys like presentations?

I do, I love presentations.

Now you can say this word with confidence.

our magic ending -tion, so we have pre-sen-tay-tion.

The next one is the word population.

Population refers to the number of people in an area.

Do you know the population of your city or the population of your country?

I'm sure you don't know exactly.

The population of my city, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is 2.5 million people.

I bet you a lot of you are going, "Only 2.5 million?

Your country's probably have a lot more."

But anyways, pronunciation is pop-u-la-tion, so we have pop-u-la-tion, pop-u-la-tion.

The population of Toronto is 2.5 million.

Next up, we all get one of these in our lives, whether it be at school or someplace else.

This word is education, so we say ed, maybe you might know someone with the name Ed, it's

a man's name, edu-ca-tion, so we actually say edu-ca-tion, that's far out, edu-ca-tion.

Let's just do a little review of this list.

We have destination, please repeat, destination, presentation, population, and education.

I want you to try and do these ones on your own.

These ones are shorter, smaller words, but they will all end in the -ion, and we have

to change these words as well to -tion.

What do you think this one would be?

In English we say mi-tion, I know it looks confusing because there's two s's, but we

actually still keep this, we say mi-tion.

The next word we have is session, and we can say this word ses-sion, so we have mi-tion,

ses-sion.

You'll notice these words are not as long as these words, these ones are easier, okay.

This one is a very, very common word we have in English, and this word is action, ac-tion.

And the last one, nation, nation refers to your country, so you can practice this by

saying what is the population of your nation?

ac-tion, and nation.
