to learn phrasal verbs so when you're learning  phrasal verbs like with any vocabulary you need  

to put it in context now when you're learning a  language there are two ways you come across it one  

in the wild so this means if you're having a  conversation with someone if you're watching a  

movie if you hear a song and you hear a new  phrasal verb or a new piece of vocabulary  

you wonder what does that mean okay so  you can come across it in the wild now  

if you do come across a phrasal verb in the wild  that is you know you hear it in a particular  

situation in a movie in a song etc you probably  want to find out what that phrasal verb means  

so if you can't ask the person you're talking to  if you hear it in a conversation then you need  

to go out and find out what it means probably on  your phone very quickly right what does that mean  

if you want to take a more proactive approach so  let's imagine you do not have a lot of people to  

speak english with if you do not have a lot of  people to communicate and learn english from  

you can be proactive by picking up a book or going  to a website and you can pick an easy to remember  

example so let's say today you know what i want  to study and i need to improve my english phrasal  

verb knowledge so you pick up a book or you  go to a website and you say okay let's look at  

these five phrasal verbs today or let's look at  these two phrasal verbs today so if you want to  

be proactive the best way to learn phrasal verbs  and to remember them number one is to pick an easy  

to remember example i'm gonna step away from the  board for a bit you can take a screenshot if you  

like to make that easier for you if you like doing  that and i'm going to read a little bit so for  

example if you are trying to learn the phrasal  verb put away right so to put away something  

means to place it in its appropriate place  and if you want to remember this phrasal verb  

you might want to use a sentence like put your  phone away okay and you remember the sentence put  

your phone away put your phone away it's a common  context because this is something that you might  

hear from a teacher you might hear it from a boss  at work and it's easy to remember put your phone  

away put your phone away what does that mean oh  yeah put it in its appropriate place so put it  

in my pocket put it in my bag you have now placed  the phrasal verb in context you've given yourself  

an easy to remember sentence number two learn  related phrasal verbs okay so for example i've  

given you um some easy examples here so learn the  opposites of the phrasal verb that you're learning  

if an opposite exists they don't always exist  but sometimes they do for example turn on right  

to activate something turn on a switch a light  a computer turn off okay so these are opposites  

turn on turn off it's a simple example or number  two you can learn similar or same phrasal verbs  

so some phrasal verbs you can put together right  so throw away throw out get rid of all three of  

these phrasal verbs refer to discarding something  so you're like okay i have this group of phrasal  

verbs that can kind of be used in similar  contexts and in similar ways or they might  

mean the exact same thing which is great because  now you've kind of created a phrasal verb family  

so you've put it in context right you found out  what it means you've given yourself a useful  

sentence that's easy to remember maybe you've  learned and studied some phrasal verb opposites  

and related phrasal verbs now what next well  you can either study study study study study  

which has been proven that if you cram cram  means try to compress a lot of information  

in a short amount of time like if you study  the night before a test this doesn't really  

work for long-term memory if you want something  to stick in your long-term memory you have to  

practice something called spaced repetition so  let me step away from the board one more time  

now spaced repetition means let's say you  come across the phrasal verb throw away today  

and you learn what it means you give yourself  an example and you think great throw away  

okay now don't just keep saying throw away throw  away throw away throw away and then forget about  

it forever after the first day um don't study it  for two days and then never think about it again  

now what you want to do the science of this says  you should study on the first day give yourself a  

break study it two days later study it on the  third day take a longer break study it on the  

seventh day take a week off after that study it  on the 14th day so the longer you you slowly start  

expanding the amount of time that you're  taking between looking at the phrasal verb  

so that it cements itself in your long-term  memory that's the goal of spaced repetition  

so this again has been scientifically proven to  help increase the chance of you remembering and  

recalling information whether that is vocabulary  or grammar or anything else related to language  

learning so one more time to learn phrasal verbs  the best way put it in a context did you hear it  

uh in the wild if you heard it in the wild go find  out what it means if you can right if you hear it  

in a movie you can pause the movie you can look  at your phone say come across what does that mean  

okay come across okay um or if you don't want  to wait to hear phrasal verbs and you want to  

be proactive with your learning if you want to say  i'm going to learn phrasal verbs let's study let's  

learn some you can you know find the definition  in a book find the definition online and then  

pick an example that's easy to remember for you  so like i said what did i say about your phone  

put your phone away right good learn related  phrasal verbs so this means learn the opposites  

if they exist learn related phrasal verbs  that are similar or the same if they exist  

again they don't always exist but sometimes they  do and then if you can i know this is difficult  

because spaced repetition you might have to set it  on your calendar not everybody can do this we're  

all very busy people but if you can do this this  is the best way to remember phrasal verbs remember  

new vocabulary and store it into your long term  memory welcome to this lesson on 10 phrasal verbs  

that you can use around your house so if you  live with someone or you have a home an apartment  

these are some very common phrasal verbs  that you can use to talk about domestic  

activities all right and you're going to  have around 40 examples in this lesson  

so not only will you you know hear turn on  turn off you'll hear all the possible options  

around your house that relate to these phrasal  verbs and that you can use with these phrasal  

verbs speaking of turn on turn off activate  deactivate you can turn on or turn off the light  

turn on or turn off the ac which is the air  conditioning okay uh turn on the fan turn off  

the fan the thing that makes air in  your house some of them go like this

you know what i mean turn on the stove or  turn off the stove where you cook okay hey  

could you turn off the stove i think  the soup is ready turn on the heater  

or the heating you might have a portable heater  right that you just turn on and it makes heat  

it makes it warm in your room or you might have  central heating in your house where you adjust the  

thermostat right so you can turn on or turn off  the heating turn on the tv turn off the computer  

turn on the dishwasher so you put your  dishes in the dishwasher turn it on  

i do that because mine has three buttons so one  two three and then four to start that's that's  

mine but anyway uh turn on the laundry or turn  off the laundry you can say the laundry machine  

as well and after you know you put your clothes  in the laundry machine also called a washer  

you can turn on the dryer hey i put the clothes  in the dryer can you just turn it on i forgot  

for some reason okay so turn on the dryer next so  turn on turn off means activate deactivate turn up  

turn down turn up increase turn down decrease so  you are talking about the intensity of something  

an appliance in your house so you can turn up the  volume now you can turn up the volume on the radio  

or the tv uh you heard me having a conversation  and i said hey can you turn down the tv  

so um when you say turn down the tv or the radio  this specifically means the volume on the tv  

or this way yeah or maybe you're doing it this way  now with a mouse or maybe you're tapping it or i  

don't know what you're doing now or you can turn  down the radio the volume on the radio you can  

turn up the ac say it's still hot can you turn  up turn up the ac increase the air conditioning  

and turn up the heater the heating you can also  just say the heat can you turn down the heat  

it's too hot in here right okay so remember turn  up means to increase turn down means to decrease  

next we have pickup pickup is very useful  because it has a couple of different contexts  

so first i'm going to give you some context where  pickup means to lift or to lift and collect things  

in your house this helps when you are cleaning up  around your house and you need to pick up the toys  

so you tell your kids like i tell my kids pick up  your toys and then they don't listen and there's  

a long argument and then no one is happy no one  just it's very hard you know what i'm talking  

about parents so pick up the toys another favorite  of mine pick up the stuff on the floor okay all  

the stuff i can't even see what it is because it's  just plastic on top of papers and more plastic and  

dolls and things and uh pick up your jacket right  so someone left the jacket on the floor hey pick  

up your jacket pick up the papers on the table  so maybe you live with someone and they left  

a big mess on the table hey could you pick up  the papers on the table and next we have pickup  

with the meaning of getting or acquiring  something so you can pick up something  

on the way home from work you can get something  or pick up something from the grocery store from  

a department store wherever you can buy something  so hey you heard me on the phone i said yeah i  

can pick up some milk i will get i will pick up  some milk from the grocery store or supermarket  

depending on which word you prefer there um hey  can you pick up some double a batteries we need  

double a batteries for the smoke detector for  example all right could you pick up a coffee for  

me so if you are out and your partner is at home  your partner calls you hey i know you're coming  

home soon could you pick up a coffee for me a cup  of coffee for me and you can also ask someone to  

pick up the mail so ah i forgot to pick  up the mail yesterday or maybe you go on  

vacation so you ask your neighbors or someone  you know in your family to pick up the mail  

while you are away so to get the letters that  come into your mailbox every day while you're away  

now before we continue i also want to stress  turn on turn off turn up turn down pick up  

and the other five phrasal verbs you will  see they are all separable what this means is  

the object like for example the light the volume  the stuff on the table they can go in the middle  

of the phrasal verb or at the end of the phrasal  verb so it's possible to say turn the light off  

or turn off the light or turn the volume up  turn up the volume okay so you can put this  

in the middle of the phrasal verb or at the end  of it so we got five more to go guys and after  

this i think you're going to be quite the domestic  king or queen next we have put away so to put away  

stuff means to return something to the place it's  supposed to be or to put it in the place it's  

supposed to be so if your partner comes home with  groceries and say hey i did the groceries here can  

you put these away so this means you know can  you put the vegetables where the vegetables are  

supposed to go the cans in the cabinets can you  put away the milk in the fridge etc so uh put away  

the groceries put them in their designated places  put away the dishes hey i washed the dishes can  

you put the dishes away so the plates go in this  cabinet the mugs and cups go in this cabinet etc  

put away the laundry right so i folded the laundry  can you just put it away put it in the closet  

put the shirts where the shirts go and the  underwear where the underwear go wherever uh  

could you put away the the stuff on the table  there's a lot of random stuff can you put it in  

its designated place all right and could you  put the toys away could you put away the toys  

they are all over the floor i can't live  like this i refuse to live like this and uh

just put away the toys kids just put them away all  kids put them away all right put back uh put back  

simply means to return so the difference with put  away and reach and put back put away means put  

something in its designated place put back means  to return something to a place where you got it  

from so it's a slight distinction so hey can you  put back the remote the remote control for the tv  

you know it's on the floor can you put it back  beside the tv or on the table beside the couch  

something like that could you put back the milk  the milk is on the table it needs to go in the  

fridge uh could you put back the books could you  put the books back i noticed that you know hey  

there are a bunch of books here you were reading  them now you're not reading them can you put  

them back on the shelf next the salt or the salt  shaker so i don't need the salt anymore i need to  

put back the salt shaker where it belongs you  know on the table or somewhere else in the kitchen  

and could you put back the dvds there are dvds on  the floor could you please you know put them back  

in the place they are supposed to be please return  them where you got them from all right next we  

have take out and put out so you can use both  of these in the same way here we have take out  

the garbage put out the garbage the recycling the  compost the cat the dog so to take out or put out  

something or well something or someone depends how  you feel about animals if you think they're people  

i guess so you can take out the cat take out the  dog put out the cat put out the dog this means to  

take something inside the house and put it outside  the house so usually you do this with garbage  

recycling compost if you have pets and you know  the dog needs to pee hey can you put the dog out  

or can you take the dog out for a walk another one  for dogs and cats if they need to pee outside you  

can say can you let the dog out or can you let the  cat out all right so you can take out garbage take  

out animals put out garbage put out animals and  finally we have throw away or throw out um another  

word to you know just a common verb for this  is toss hey can you just toss this away toss it  

all right so throw away throw out the garbage  throw away or throw out you know this junk or  

throw this away throw this away it means to  discard it all right don't keep it anymore  

we don't need it throw it away throw it out out  of my house away so uh could you throw this away  

could you throw that out it's it's old throw it  out um could you throw out your old clothes so  

if you have like old clothes and maybe they have  rips and they're dirty from paint or something  

and you know you you need to throw that stuff  away toss your old clothes throw away your old  

clothes throw out your old clothes or donate them  but i'm using it in another example with throwaway  

or throw out donate is what you should probably do  if your clothes are still in pretty good condition

meetings in this lesson we will look at 12 phrasal  verbs that are commonly used in the context of  

work meetings now i cannot provide you with an  exhaustive list of every single phrasal verb  

that might come up in a work meeting but the  ones i've chosen are some of the more common  

phrasal verbs that i use when you know i am  trying to set up a work meeting or i am in  

the middle of a work meeting so if you work in  an office environment or another type of work  

environment where you are meeting with the boss or  something i think these will be useful for you so  

you may have heard in my phone conversation i told  my colleague that we need to set up a meeting to  

discuss you know this problem that we're having so  to set up means to organize for example i'd like  

to set up a conference call with the client so  i would like to organize this means set the time  

set the date set the location for the meeting  so let's set up a meeting send me an invitation  

send me an email let me know which days  work for you set up organize the meeting  

start off basically means start or begin so often  times the person who is at the head of the meeting  

who's starting the meeting might say something  like okay i will start off by introducing tina  

to the team so you're in the middle of the meeting  now and your boss or the person who is you know  

chairing the meeting might say i'll start off  i'd like to start off let's start off let's begin  

by talking about this so let's start off by  reviewing what we know so far let's start off  

by reviewing what we discussed last time i'd  like to start off by introducing tina to the team  

so some of you might know tina some of you might  not know tina all right next sometimes this  

happens you have to call off which basically means  to cancel a meeting because the timing doesn't  

work and you just can't make it happen so not only  meetings but you can also talk about things like  

our holiday party has been called off this year so  if you're giving some news and notes about what's  

happening in your company these days you might  have to give bad news sometimes and say i'm sorry  

but the company christmas party the company  holiday party has been called off this year we  

don't have the money to have it okay you can also  call off the meeting right so i'm sorry we have  

to call off the meeting it doesn't work for me or  one of the key people is sick or you know i just  

don't have the time to you know make this meeting  happen so set up start off call off deal with  

now when you are in the work meeting itself you're  often talking about things that you plan to do  

or things that are happening in the company now  and you have to talk about how you will handle  

or manage something so the s t it's st that stands  for something in the context of my board work  

so to deal with something means that you  are managing or handling um something or  

experiencing it so we've been dealing with  several ongoing problems an ongoing problem  

is something that keeps happening again and  again and again so we have been dealing with  

several ongoing problems how are we going to deal  with losing this person from the company right so  

if someone leaves a company you have to deal with  that problem deal with that situation hey how are  

we dealing with the new renovations project okay  so how are we handling the communication for it  

or something like that okay so to handle to  manage to deal with imagine you're you know you  

have the problem in your hand and you're kind of  manipulating it and dealing with it okay all right  

um oh i'm sorry i rubbed a little bit off there  but i think you can you know read the word think  

there so bring up uh to bring up something is to  introduce it into the conversation so many issues  

many topics are brought up in the context of work  meetings so i think you've brought up a good point  

i think you have introduced this topic into the  conversation i think you have introduced a good  

point you know in the course of this meeting or  something that is relevant to the things we are  

discussing here all right so um hey carolyn  you brought up that you know we don't have  

enough coffee in the kitchen right now can  someone buy more coffee for the kitchen okay  

so she brought up a topic into the conversation  imagine these are topics in your hands that you  

want to discuss in a meeting you bring them up i'd  like to bring up this topic i'd like to bring up  

the topic of vacation time in the company okay or  oh steve over here he's bringing up the topic that  

i don't know he would like more time off  as well um that there's a conflict in his  

schedule or something okay and jot down now  you are if you are in a meeting and it's a long  

one one hour's two hours i can't speak for your  company i don't know how long your meetings are  

but you probably bring a notebook with you so that  you can take notes or maybe you bring a tablet  

or a laptop and to jot down simply means to write  notes so please bring a notepad to jot down notes  

to take down you can also say jot down or take  down notes jot down information jot down details  

so i'll just think chat chat chat okay um usually  it refers to physical notebooks physical paper  

but people have used it also when they bring  a you know a small laptop and they're jotting  

down notes they're taking down notes as the  meeting is happening all right so quick recap  

set up a meeting organize start off begin call  off cancel deal with handle or manage bring up  

introduce into the conversation jot down to write  notes now let's look at six more next we have run  

out of to run out of something means to use all of  it now this doesn't only have to refer to physical  

things like office supplies for example you can  run out of pencils run out of pens run out of  

printer ink it can also refer to things like time  or patience so i'm afraid we have run out of time  

or maybe someone will bring up in the meeting that  they are running out or the office is running out  

of certain supplies so the printer is running out  of ink or the printer has almost run out of ink  

or we are running out of staples uh we have run  out of paper emergency we need to buy more paper  

okay so to run out of it means to use all of it  if you are a fan of the band muse you might know  

our time is running out so you can run out of time  run out of patience and run out of office supplies  

as well next figure out so to figure something  out means to find a solution to something or to  

understand something for example we need to figure  out some ways to save money that's why we're here  

okay let's figure out let's try to find a solution  let's try to find a way to save more money okay or  

i can't figure out what's going on here like  i don't understand what is happening here  

in this particular situation so if you are  trying to figure something out you're trying to  

find a solution or you are trying to  understand something all right next  

to go over so hopefully you are going over you  know your english knowledge on a daily basis  

it means to review or to repeat information so  it is clear in the context of a business meeting  

before we begin i'd like to go over some ground  rules now very quickly ground rules refer to basic  

foundational rules so the ground rules  for a meeting might be no cell phones okay  

um you are not allowed to leave you know for the  first 20 minutes because the information is very  

important uh please raise your hand if you want  to speak if you're in a very strict company maybe  

or please listen and pay attention to other people  defer judgment like don't judge people critically  

right away there are many ground rules or basic  foundation rules you can have in a meeting so  

to go over you can go over rules you can go over a  report so the person who set up the meeting might  

have a report and they want everyone to look at  it they will say okay we are going to go over the  

step by step we will review the information on the  report step by step next hand out so this links to  

what i just said the person who set up the meeting  has a report they want to give a copy of the  

report to everyone in the meeting a paper copy  they hand out copies of the report to hand out  

simply means to distribute to a group if you have  ever taken english classes in a classroom setting  

you will probably know that teachers hand out  activities or hand out papers the meaning of the  

word is literally in the word hand out okay so to  hand out means to distribute or give all right so  

i'm going to hand out copies of our brochure right  so maybe your company just has a new brochure  

and you're going to review it as a team in your  work meeting um and you know the person who set  

up the meeting hands out the brochure distributes  the brochure next look into so to look into  

something means to explore or to try to discover  facts imagine you're peeking through things and  

looking into things you're exploring right  you're trying to find something so tina tina  

she just started with the team but you trust  her a lot tina i'd like you to look into this  

yeah we're having a problem with people stealing  food from the kitchen refrigerator okay so  

people just keep taking food i bring my lunch  every day but once a month my lunch disappears  

from the refrigerator i'd like you to look into  this what's happening okay can you call our  

maybe video camera video security company and find  out what's going on okay find out the information  

that we need all right so look into explore try  to find the information try to discover facts  

what's happening finally wrap up to wrap up is  to finish so let's try to wrap up in five more  

minutes max max just means maximum so if you are  wrapping up you are near the end of the meeting  

and you are just trying to you know finish it  basically so right now i'm going to wrap up this

to this video so let's begin so take off the most  common meaning of takeoff is to remove something  

so especially something you are wearing i'm going  to step off the screen so you can see very clearly  

for example please take off your shoes you can  use any article of clothing any piece of jewelry  

and you can use take off to mean to remove  that thing so take off your shirt take off  

your necklace take off your socks take off your  shoes okay uh now this this phrasal verb is also  

separable in this case so you can say take your  shoes off now it's again especially something you  

are wearing but it does mean to remove something  from somewhere so usually off your body but  

take that picture off the wall so you  can remove a picture from a wall right uh  

even a virtual wall like if you have a social  media account can say take that off your wall  

i don't want that picture there okay remove it  from the wall next to leave a place often suddenly  

so if i say sorry guys i need to take off  i have work in the morning i need to leave  

and usually it's something that you decide  in the moment it's like yeah i gotta take off  

you can do it with a plan you can say just so  you know i need to take off at seven o'clock  

and let's look at two examples that i wrote here  on the board so you can see clearly she took off  

after dinner this simply means she left after  dinner and you can ask a friend a colleague  

hey when are you taking off what time are you  taking off what time are you leaving okay next  

take off can also mean to suddenly  become popular or successful so  

if there is a pop song on the radio that suddenly  becomes popular or successful you can say  

that song is taking off okay  so let's look at these examples

so uh oh i missed one all right we'll go back  to that so while i'm talking about this this is  

number four her career is really taking off so her  career is really starting to become successful she  

has been in her industry for several years and now  she is really starting to make money gain prestige  

her career is really taking off and if one of your  work colleagues has a new business plan a new idea  

and they're really excited about it and  you say i don't think that idea will take  

off that idea will never take off we'll never  you know become successful or become popular  

all right so that was number four i missed  number three i know how to count i promise so  

uh this is very common the act of a plane leaving  the ground and starting to fly so let me give you  

some space here my flight takes off in an  hour okay so the plane takes off in an hour  

it's like oh did i miss my flight yeah the plane  took off already so when a plane leaves an airport  

or wherever you can fly a plane right so the  plane took off my plane takes off in an hour it's  

kind of like the opposite of it lands okay and  finally we have number five so to take time off  

this means to obtain time off to take a break or  to take a vacation let's look at the two examples

he took a week off for his wedding so you can  put the time period between um to take and off  

here i'm using the simple past tense he took a  week off you can also say he took off a week for  

his wedding he was getting married he needed to  make a lot of arrangements so he needed to take  

some time off next lastly are you taking any time  off this summer so this is a very common question  

that you can ask your colleagues your co-workers  your friends because maybe you want to make plans  

with them or they seem like they're very tired and  you say are you taking any time off this summer  

you look like you need a break it  would be good for you to have a break  

so as you can see this is a very versatile phrasal  verb that can be used in a number of contexts

eight eight push phrasal verbs in this lesson  we'll start with four we'll do another four  

right after this so i don't want to waste any more  time let's get started number one to push ahead  

with something so to push ahead with something  means to continue with something to continue doing  

something when there are problems or when other  people may be working on a project wish to stop  

so you keep doing it even though other people  say no no stop it's a bad idea typically  

you push ahead with things in an office or the  government will push ahead with something let's  

look at the two examples to show you what i  mean number one we pushed ahead with the policy  

despite unpopular public opinion the public  didn't like the policy we introduced maybe the  

policy says everyone must have a fake mustache  on the second day of every month i don't know  

and it says unpopular public opinion but you  know the government says oh it's a great idea  

let's do it so they push ahead with the policy  second the municipal government is pushing ahead  

with its plans so again to push ahead is to  keep going to keep pushing with something even  

if there are problems or other people think it's  a bad idea next push someone around so think of

if someone pushes you around they treat you in  a rude way they act like a bully for example  

our boss thinks he can just push people  around or my brother pushed me around  

a lot as a kid so imagine you are the  person who is being pushed around you're

someone is bullying you pushing you in this  direction in that direction treating you  

like they are a bully next to push someone  away means to force someone away from you so  

the relationship wasn't working so she pushed him  away this means you know she stopped calling him  

she stopped commenting on his facebook photos she  just did not text him anymore she pushed him away  

because the relationship was not working next  we're friends why are you pushing me away  

okay so you're my best friend don't push me away  come back okay don't separate yourself don't  

try to force yourself away from me next to push a  date or an appointment back this means to postpone  

something so to delay something st something  until a later time or a later date two examples  

the meeting had to be pushed back by a week so  the meeting was pushed back delayed by one week  

we pushed our wedding date back so we  realized there was a family emergency maybe  

so we had to push the wedding date back  okay now we're gonna look at four more

next we have to push back against someone  or something this means to fight back  

against someone or something for example  they pushed back against the enemy  

against the enemy army so the enemy army is  coming at them they're pushing them pushing  

them pushing them and then they push back  push back push back against the enemy army  

next example we can't accept these conditions we  need to push back so this could be a situation  

at your workplace where you do not like the  conditions so you want to push back against  

the management next to push for something or to  push for someone means to support and advocate for  

something or someone examples the employees pushed  for more money so maybe again the employees are  

not happy with how much money they are making  so they go on strike and in their discussion  

with the management they push for more money  they support and advocate for more money next  

most canadians pushed for justin trudeau in the  2015 election so they pushed for him supported him  

advocated for him and he won he became the  prime minister in 2015. two more examples  

push or press on with something or with a  plan so you can say to push on or to press on  

this means to continue doing something even  when it's difficult so the drive was difficult  

but we kept pushing on okay so it's snowing a  lot and you're like okay just 20 more minutes  

and i'm at home okay we kept pushing on pushing on  pushing on continued to drive next we can't quit  

we need to push on this could be any situation  we can't give up we need to keep going  

push on and continue studying english for example  finally push past and you need to push past  

someone so to push past someone is to press  roughly into someone as you pass them so the  

two examples will make this very clear i had to  push past a bunch of people to catch the bus so  

you're you know trying to catch the bus the bus is  there there are people in front of you you have to  

push past them to catch the bus on time finally  she pushed past three runners to win the race  

so she's running she's running she's running and  she's pushing past three runners to win the race

lesson on expressions with hang today we will be  looking at one two three four five six different  

expressions that all use the word hang in some way  i hope some of them will be familiar and some of  

them will be new to you guys so first up hang  on the sentence says could you hang on a minute  

when we see a minute hang on clearly we see this  means to wait okay so to hang on means to wait  

um generally we use hang on in the imperative  form which means we give a command so if you're  

listening to a person tell a story and you want  to say whoa whoa hang on hang on wait wait wait  

also kind of like stop in this situation and if  your friends are running away and you're like whoa  

hang on hang on a minute hang on a minute okay  so this means wait and usually it's given in  

a command form okay next up we have hang up so  the sentences here say did you hang up the phone  

he hung up on me so to hang up generally all  the time actually we use it to refer to ending  

a phone call and clicking the end button  okay so to hang up is to end a phone call  

and the important part here is to know you can use  the preposition on if someone hangs up on you so  

if i say he hung up on me that means he ended  the phone call now usually this is because the  

other person was angry or upset at you so i can't  believe he hung up on me i can't believe she hung  

up on me okay next one is hang out so do you want  to hang out this weekend if you watch a lot of  

movies or if you listen to music anything related  to pop culture you have probably heard this a lot  

tv shows as well and to hang out just means to  spend time okay so you hang out with your friends  

on the weekends and hanging out means not  doing anything in particular but just spending  

time with your friends so you can hang out at  someone's house you can hang out at a coffee shop  

so just hang out spend time together in a casual  situation okay the next one is to hang around  

so we're hanging around the mall so you're talking  on the phone and your friend calls you and says  

hey where are you we're looking for you and  you say oh we're just hanging around the mall  

so hang around you might think has a very similar  meaning to hang out because you are spending time  

but hang around means you're spending time usually  in one specific area and usually it's because  

you're wasting time and waiting for something  else to happen so it does mean to spend time

in an area now again as i mentioned usually  you're waiting for something else to happen  

when you're hanging around so you know if you tell  your friends and just hang around here for five  

minutes just spend some time kill the time here  okay and i will be back just hang around this area  

next is to hang in and this is one  that we definitely most often use in  

a command form as well imperative form so hang in  just a little longer you'll notice i put the term  

the word there in parentheses in brackets  and this is because we often use this with  

hang in so if i say hang in there this  means well it means to don't give up  

keep surviving keep fighting so to  hang in means to continue or to survive

or to not give up

so if you're watching uh a mixed  martial arts fight for example  

and one of the fighters in the fight you know  you you don't expect him to win and you say  

wow it's round three he has hung in for three  rounds so he has hung in there for three rounds  

this means that he has survived he is still going  continuing for through the third round i'm sorry  

my tongue is doing the the things and finally uh  the expression to hang on someone's every word  

so for example i hung on the professor's every  word this means you pay attention to listen to  

you're interested in the person's every word  so basically this means to be interested

in everything or by everything a person has to say  now you can use this when you're listening to a  

lecture uh you can use this if you're listening  to a politician uh you know give a speech and  

you're just interested in everything a person has  to say okay so to quickly review hang on means to  

wait hang up means to end a phone call hang out is  to spend time usually with friends casually hang  

around you're spending time in one area hanging  around a doctor's office hanging around the mall  

to hang in is to continue to survive to not  give up usually in an imperative form so hang  

in there come on hang in keep going don't  give up and to hang on someone's every word  

you're interested and attracted to a person and  everything that they have to say more specifically

i am going to look at how many one two three four  five six seven eight nine 10 10 phrasal verbs and  

their opposites for a total of 20 phrasal verbs  that is more phrasal verbs than steve has legs  

more phrasal verbs than steve has legs right  so we'll start from the top first check in  

or check into so you can check into a hotel when  you first arrive say i'm here to check in okay  

now when you check in obviously when you finish  your stay at a hotel you have to check out or  

check out of the hotel so steve remember that time  we drove down to the states we went to fun spot  

which is the biggest arcade in the world we  checked into the holiday inn on a friday and  

we checked out on a sunday it was a good time i  played pac-man mania for like four hours straight  

next we have get in so to get in specifically  into an enclosed space like a room or a car  

or get into the opposite is get out or get out  of a place or something so in a car for example  

i got into the car she got into the taxi so you  get in to a taxi or into a car and then to leave  

you have to get out now you can also be inside  your house and you can tell someone's like get  

in get in get in or if you're very angry at them  you can say get out like that one time remember  

that you know what i'm talking about all right  next get on or get onto get off or get off of now  

this is specifically for public transportation  so you can get on or get onto a bus a train  

a plane a boat and then when you leave the bus  leave the train leave the boat leave the plane you  

get off the plane get off the boat or get off  of the bus or the subway or the metro so you  

get on the metro the trip is finished get off  the metro okay depending on which part of the  

world you're from you might say the metro or the  subway i say metro because i work around montreal  

but if you go to toronto most people say subway  so it depends where you're from next go out and  

stay in so this means to go out means to go see a  movie go outside of your house on the weekend and  

do something with your friends so after this steve  and i are going to go out and have a little party  

somewhere don't know where we haven't decided yet  but we got some friends waiting for us outside and  

we'll decide after now if you don't want to go  out and you prefer a quiet night in your house  

in your room like steve listening to pink floyd  in his bedroom while staring up at the ceiling  

then you stay in so your friends ask you hey do  you want to go out tonight say nah nah pink floyd  

i'm gonna stay in i need to take in this music  next pick up and put down so very literal pick up  

put down pick up put down so you can pick up  a glass put down a glass pick up a pencil put  

down a pencil and this is another meaning  of pickup so we have pick up and drop off  

in this situation pickup can mean to get something  or someone from a specific location so you can  

pick up someone from the daycare if you are a  parent and you have a young child you can pick  

them up from the daycare at the end of the day  you get them you can drop them off at the daycare  

in the morning meaning you leave them there for  example after work if you're calling your friend  

your mom your roommate your wife your husband and  they say hey what time are you gonna be home oh  

i'm gonna be a little late first i need to  drop something off at the bank maybe a bill  

you have to pay and i need to pick up something  from the grocery store so maybe you are out of  

milk you have no more milk so you need to pick up  some milk from the grocery store and again drop  

off not just for people not just for kids it can  be for things too both of them can be for things  

so you can drop off money at someone's house or  drop off a cd or drop off movie tickets somewhere  

put on take off so this is largely for clothes  right so you can put on your socks take off your  

socks put on your jacket take off your jacket now  steve after about one beer likes to take off his  

clothes i know he doesn't he's not wearing clothes  now he looks good naked anyway spiders look good  

naked that's a weird sentence i'm sorry um but  we'll we'll stop there i don't want to continue  

that story so uh slow down the opposite of to  slow down is to speed up hurry up go faster  

so if you're driving and you know you're driving  with a friend your friend might say whoa whoa  

slow down you don't want the police to stop you if  you are late for something your friend might say  

speed up okay we need to go quicker stay up  and turn in this has a very specific context  

so to stay up means to not go to sleep but to  stay awake at night so for example last night  

i stayed up until 1am playing dungeons and dragons  with my friends it's not true but imagine so we  

stayed up until 2 o'clock watching old movies  old horror movies for example now if you don't  

want to stay up don't want to stay awake you can  turn in to turn in means to go to bed go to sleep  

so i stayed up until 11 which means i  turned in at 11 i went to sleep at 11.  

and finally turn up turn down very specific  context if you have you know a stereo system  

you can turn up the volume make it louder or  turn down the volume make it softer quieter

so those are 20 phrasal verbs 20. i know it's a  lot again more phrasal verbs than steve has legs  

so if you'd like to test your understanding of  the material i recommend that you watch this  

video more than once because there is a lot of  information here and then you can do the quiz to  

make sure you fully get it today we are going to  look at five different phrasal verbs now these are  

very very common in everyday english speaking  the first phrasal verb we are going to look at is  

look forward to okay so if you say i am  looking forward to something it means that  

you are excited about something in the future  you are anticipating something in the future  

so for example if you work at a job you get  scheduled vacation um and your vacation is coming  

up in two weeks your vacation is in two weeks you  can say i'm looking forward to my vacation okay  

so if you are looking forward to something you  are excited about something in the future okay

in the future

now one important thing to note here you  can follow the expression look forward to  

again you can use it in any tense any  english tense one important thing to  

note is that you can follow it with again an  event so you can say i'm looking forward to  

my mom's birthday party i'm looking forward  to my son's graduation okay you can also  

follow it with a verb now if you follow look  forward to with a verb the verb must be the  

ing form so you must use a gerund actually  so you can say i'm looking forward to seeing

seeing my uncle this weekend

if your uncle is a very cool guy and you're  excited about looking for looking at this  

sorry guys if you're excited about seeing him this  weekend you can say i'm looking forward to seeing  

my uncle this weekend okay the next phrasal  verb next english expression that we have  

is get along with so if i say i don't get along  with my brother what do you think the meaning  

is okay if i say i do get along with my brother  i get along with my brother this means i have a  

good relationship with him okay if i say i don't  get along with my brother i don't have a good  

relationship with him so if you get along  with someone you have a good relationship

and again you can use this expression in any tense  so for example you can say when i was younger i  

didn't get along with my dad but now that i'm  older we understand each other more and now  

we get along with each other okay so if you get  along with someone you have a good relationship  

if you don't get along with someone you don't  have a good relationship with that person okay  

next phrasal verb is put up with to put up with  something so the example i gave here she puts  

up with the subway every morning now imagine you  have to work or you go to school every day okay  

every day you must take the subway think of the  subway or the metro as some of you might know it  

how is the subway in the morning in your city  how is the metro in your city some people say the  

subway is very crowded there are too many people  sometimes the subway is very hot sometimes the  

subway does not smell nice okay but you have to  take the subway right if you don't take the subway  

you don't go to work but you have to take the  subway and even though you don't like it you have  

to put up with it okay so to put up with something  means to tolerate something to put up to tolerate

now again you can put up with situations you can  put up with people in your life so for example  

if you work at a job where you don't like your  boss but he is your boss or she is your boss  

you have to like them pretend to like them and  you can say i put up with my boss i don't like  

him or her but i put up with him i tolerate  him or her okay so if you tolerate someone  

again it's something that you might not like  but you have to do so you put up with it  

next we have to give up something now if you  give something up or give up something this  

means that you stop doing it you quit doing  it so for example he wants to give up smoking  

now as you notice the verb here the gerunds  should i say is an ing form so you can give up  

an activity for example some people can say i  need to give up drinking so much on the weekend  

or i need to give up texting my friends  every day i should give up checking my email  

every single hour okay so if you  give up something you stop doing it

stop doing or quit something

now again you can give up an object  to an activity so you can say  

i gave up guitar if you started playing guitar  you realized it wasn't for you you didn't like it  

you gave up guitar so you can also give  up again something it can be either an ing  

gerund or it can be something like i gave up the  guitar if you don't play guitar anymore finally  

we have the expression put off now if you put off  something this means you postpone it you push it  

back in time so here we have the example don't  put off cleaning your room one thing to note again  

ing okay don't put off cleaning your room not  don't put off too clean don't put off clean  

don't put off cleaning your room  so to put off means to postpone

or push back in time

so imagine you have a doctor's appointment  but something important happens there is a  

family emergency so you might have to put off  your doctor's appointment push it back into  

until another day so please don't put off  studying okay you should study as often as  

you can if you want to improve well your skills  in anything not just english and anything yeah

intransitive phrasal verbs intransitive this  means these phrasal verbs do not have objects now  

some examples of transitive phrasal verbs are for  example my friend opened up a business this means  

business is an object my friend opened it and he  opened up a business i will call you back you are  

the object and i will call you back so these two  examples open up a business call someone back they  

both have objects which means they are transitive  these phrasal verbs don't have objects no objects  

they just exist by themselves they don't need  an object after okay so let's look at the first  

ten first breakdown my car broke down so here this  means that your car stopped working now you can't  

say like my car broke down you know something else  like if i ran over a motorcycle with my car say my  

car broke down a motorcycle you can't say that  okay it's just my car broke down my car stopped  

working other things that can break down your  computer your phone usually mechanical things okay  

or electronic things next catch on if something  catches on it means it starts to become popular  

so uh viral videos on youtube catch on okay for  example huh that new dance is really catching on  

i'm not going to mention a dance in the  example because by the time you see this video  

there's probably a new gangnam style or a new  dab or something like that available to the  

young kids out there in the dance clubs so that  new dance is really catching on it means that that  

dance is becoming popular die out if something  dies out or is dying out or has been dying out  

it means it is slowly dying slowly decreasing in  popularity so for example blackberry uh the the  

company the cell phone company blackberry has  been dying out for years for many years so the  

the blackberry is not as popular you know as  it was or is not as popular as uh the iphone or  

android phones so the company's popularity  has been dying out okay if a species of  

animal or insect or anything is going extinct you  can also say that animal that species is dying  

out so bees for example are dying out across  the world which means we will all be dead soon

next drop by can we drop by the bank so  to drop by this means to make a quick stop  

make a quick visit now you're saying alex you  said intransitive phrasal verbs have no object  

why is the bank here well you're not dropping  the bank you're not doing something to the bank  

the bank is not an object here the bank is  merely a location okay so can we drop by  

can we stop you can also say stop by can  we drop by the bank can we make a visit  

by the bank can we stop by grandma's house can  we stop by the grocery store can we make a stop  

and then continue to another location next end  up where did you end up okay so where did you you  

know end your travels what is your final location  not only a physical location it can also be  

you know where did you end up in your  career where did you finish in your career  

okay i ended up working for apple or i ended up  working for microsoft i ended up doing something  

my final location my final destination in my work  life or in my personal life or a physical location  

too it can be so uh oh yeah where did you end  up moving to uh oh we ended up moving to london  

for example or we ended up moving to caracas  whatever all right get back so we got back  

from vacation yesterday so to get back in this  context means to return um so we got back from  

vacation yesterday we returned from vacation  yesterday next go ahead okay so if you're  

telling someone to go ahead you're telling them  to go before you and you will catch up with them  

later so ah you go ahead i will meet you there  okay so you and your friend you have a plan  

and you know you have to do something at home  first maybe wash your dishes or do the laundry or  

i don't know help your sister with something or  help your son or daughter with their homework and  

you say okay you go ahead i will meet you there  i will be you know 15 minutes late for example  

you go first grow up so to grow up means to mature  where you became an adult or where you grew up  

they grew up in brasilia so that is where they  were born and that is where you know they became  

turned from children into adults or adolescents  and everything um so they grew up in brasilia  

um you can't like grow up a person grow up a  thing grow up an object no object intransitive  

okay you can grow flowers you can grow things  in a garden but you can't grow up flowers  

it doesn't doesn't really exist that  expression so where did you grow up

hold on so could you hold on a minute so this  just means to you know wait so if you ask someone  

to hold on you can't hold on something you can  like hold on just hold on just wait okay could  

you hold on a minute and move in so if you move  in the opposite of move-in is move out uh when  

you you know get a new apartment a new house you  change where you are living and you move your  

furniture you move all the things you have your  clothes your bed whatever hey when did you move in  

if you have a new neighbor for example oh you're  new when did you move in you can say i moved in  

last week okay and if you say move into  then you can have an object you can say  

i moved into my apartment but here move in  intransitive all right okay it's making sense  

not too bad so far okay 10  more let's do 10 more 10 more

all right next we have set off so to set  off is used in a very specific context  

this means that you start a journey at a specific  time so for example we set off at six o'clock  

this could be a present sentence or it could  be a past sentence because the past of set is  

set so you could say you know our boat or we got  in the car and started our journey at six o'clock  

we set off at six o'clock or in the future oh we  set off at six o'clock be ready okay we leave at  

six o'clock next show up so this means to appear  what time you appeared at a place so when are you  

going to show up if you're talking to a friend  and they're waiting for you somewhere like at the  

mall or in front of a movie theater or at a cafe  somewhere and you're late and they say when are  

you going to show up so you know i i'm gonna show  up late i'm gonna show up early i'll show up when  

i want to show up whatever next slow down to slow  down is just you can use it like a command to go  

slower you need to slow down okay so you can ask  your partner who's sitting in the car next to you  

in the driver's seat they're driving too fast  okay you need to slow down okay please slow down  

next speak out so if you are vocal about  a topic that most people are quiet about  

you speak out you can speak out against  something for example speak out against injustice  

against keeping prisoners in prison for a long  time unlawfully so what's the example here if  

you're not happy speak out so if you're at a  job and you want to give you know your friend  

some advice because they are not satisfied with  job if you're not happy speak out say something  

next take off so the plane takes off in 30  minutes so this refers to the time a plane  

leaves you can use it to talk about people like  the time you have to leave work for example  

i'm taking off in five minutes i need  to take off early i'm going to take off  

soon i'm going to leave the most common context  though is with airplanes when they take off from  

the airport and then land at another airport so  to take off to leave or for a plane to leave the  

airport leave the runway go into the sky turn out  the movie turned out okay so you can use turnout  

to talk about the final result of something the  final quality of something so you can use it to  

talk about how a movie turned out you know how  the final result looked like if you enjoyed it the  

movie turned out okay the movie turned out really  bad or the movie turned out excellent whatever  

next pass out now there is a way to use pass  out in a transitive sense uh if you can for  

example you know pass out advertisements pass  out papers this means to distribute something  

but in this context it is used in transitively  for example they drank until they passed out  

so to pass out means to lose consciousness so  they drank too much too much alcohol and they  

passed out you can also use pass out like in an  informal slang way to mean that you fell asleep  

because you're so tired you can say oh i  went home and i passed out in two minutes

okay so you lost consciousness you um you  know you went to sleep very very quickly  

as if someone punched you and you you passed out  next watch out you can use this like a command  

you can watch out for something so watch  out for cars this means be alert be careful  

next turn around very literal turn around  every time i see you i get a little bit  

something it's a bonnie tyler song so  turn around and look at me so turn around  

i like to sing so i'm gonna sing turn  around every time i get a little bit closer  

that song turn around bright eyes that's how it  goes let's stop talking about bonnie tyler um  

did you know there was a solar eclipse and she  sang total eclipse of the heart on the day of the  

eclipse in 2017. i thought that was pretty cool  uh turn around and look at me all right catch  

up so if you are behind something um and you need  to you know get to the same point as someone else  

you need to catch up with them so oh you're  too far i will never catch up i will never  

catch you get to the same point as you because  you're too far so if your friend and you you're  

driving somewhere you're going camping um and  your friend you know drove and they left like  

five hours ago and you think okay maybe you know  i'll meet them somewhere on the road and they say  

oh i left five hours ago okay you're too far i  will never catch up with you okay all right so  

just listen and repeat with me on  this set of words here repeat set off

show up

slow down

speak out

take off

turn out

pass out

watch out

turn around

catch up okay so this is a tricky topic i  recommend you guys you know watch this video

means something in this video and so means someone  so to put up with something or someone let's look  

at this sentence and see if we can identify the  meaning so i have i hate traffic i hate traffic  

but i have to put up with it so imagine every day  you go to work you must take the metro or your  

car and you have to drive and you have to drive  through the traffic you hate the traffic but you  

have to use it right so in this situation in this  context to put up with something to put up with  

traffic means to tolerate it you don't like it but  you have to do it okay so this means to tolerate  

okay those of you who don't know what tolerate  means again it means that you don't like it  

but you still have to deal with it in some way  and again you don't only have to put up with  

things like i put up with traffic every day you  can put up with people in your life so maybe at  

work um or in your school university there are  people you don't like but you see them every day  

and you have to tolerate them you have to put up  with them okay all right guys um so number two we  

have to put something on uh this is a separable  phrasal verb so this means the something can  

actually go in the middle of the phrasal verb or  at the end of the phrasal verb so the sentence is  

put on your jacket it's also possible to say  put your jacket on based on the context of the  

sentence i think it's easy to see that to put on  means to you know cover yourself with clothing  

and it's not only clothing basically anything  that you can put on your body like jewelry

to cover your body

with

clothing

or jewelry so the most common context is to put  on clothing so put on your socks put on your shirt  

put on your pants whatever it is okay number three  to put something away just like put on to put away  

is a separable phrasal verb which means you can  put the object the something in the middle of  

the phrasal verb or on the end of the phrasal verb  so put away your books it's time for the test so  

the context here is you're in class the teacher  says put away your books it's time for the test  

you can't look at your books right so where do  you put your books well most students put them  

in a backpack right your bag so to put something  away means you have to put it in an appropriate

place so a place where that is expected that  you would put that thing or whatever it is  

okay and finally we have to put something together  and once more this is a separable phrasal verb so  

you can put the object in the middle or at the end  let's look at the sentence i hate putting together  

new furniture so if you go to ikea which is  a really popular furniture store when you  

go home you have to put the furniture together it  doesn't come as one piece you have to work with it  

and to put it together basically means to  assemble it complete it okay so this means to

assemble okay so kids can put things together  

if they play with legos or if you are good with  computers you can put together a new computer um  

or in this case this is a something that i'm very  familiar with you put together new furniture okay  

guys so once more those four phrasal verbs  are to put up with something or someone  

you don't like it but you have to do it okay  so you put up with traffic put up with people  

put something on to cover your body with clothing  or jewelry put something away to put it in an  

appropriate place and to put something together  means to assemble something if you'd like to test

the verb hold first one is hold on so let's look  at the sentence could you hold on for a minute  

often this phrasal verb is used in this type of  question form it's also used as an imperative  

if i just say whoa whoa hold on so hold  on basically means wait or stop okay  

so generally it means to wait could you hold  on for a minute could you slow down or wait  

or stop what you're doing okay so often used an  imperative or in a request form next we have to  

hold on to something or hold on to someone so  if i put s t it's something s o is someone you  

shouldn't hold on to anger what do you think  this means you think of the verb hold and very  

literally you hold on to something means you  don't let it go okay so to not let something  

go so you can hold on to a person's hand or you  can hold on to the railing of your as you're  

walking up the stairs somewhere okay so very  literal meaning in this one next we have to hold  

something against someone so we have the sentence  you're ambitious but i don't hold it against you  

now to hold something against someone means  that you basically resent someone or you don't  

like someone because of something about their  character or something they have done so you  

feel badly towards someone because of something  they did so basically to resent someone for  

something for something they did or something  about them so in this situation i'm saying you're  

ambitious now maybe some people think you know  ambition can be a positive thing it can also be  

a negative thing if you're too ambitious and  you want too much for yourself so if i say  

oh you're ambitious you know but i don't hold  it against you i don't hate you for it i don't  

resent you for being ambitious okay next to hold  something in the sentence says i couldn't hold in  

my laughter so if you hold something in this  means that you don't let it out okay so to not

let something out now we often use this to talk  about laughter uh you can hold in your feelings  

also if you're going on a long car ride on the  highway you can hold in your bodily functions so  

you can hold in your p is basically that's that's  what i want to say so to not let something out  

like hold it in okay and finally hold back so the  sentence says he was held back by the police so  

think of held back by the police held back this  means to restrain a person from doing something  

and you can hold yourself back from  doing something so to restrain someone

okay so uh you can also restrain something like  you can restrain yourself from doing something  

as well okay so guys just to review hold on means  to wait most often used an imperative like whoa  

whoa whoa hold on i don't understand or whoa hold  on go back or to make a request hey can you hold  

on for one minute a second to hold on to something  or somebody don't let it go you can hold on to a  

feeling you can hold on to something physical  you can hold on to an emotion okay feeling  

emotion same thing i suppose uh hold something  against someone like you um are angry at a person  

because of something they did in the past and you  can't let it go okay hold something in to not let

um and to hold back is to restrain yourself or to  restrain someone or something from doing something

on using english at work and today we are going  to look at 10 phrasal verbs for the office so  

if you have an office job any type of office  job these phrasal verbs are very very common  

in any english speaking workplace so let's start  with the first five we'll talk about them we'll  

look at some examples and i'll explain them for  you guys so number one to fill out now to fill out  

basically means to complete and this is usually  in the context of a form so did she fill out  

the registration form oh if you're interested  in working here please fill out this application  

okay so you fill out or complete a form next  to run out of something now i put the of  

in parentheses because you can just say oh it  ran out or something ran out of something else  

so for example if something runs out it means you  have used all of it and there's no more left now  

in the office usually this refers to some kind of  supply some kind of inventory item that you have  

no more of because you ran out of it for example  the printer ran out of ink or you can say oh no  

we ran out of paper or we ran out of pens we  need to order more pens okay so if you run  

out of something it means you have used all of it  and there's no more left you need to order more  

next note down this is very common in meetings  and to note down simply means to write  

for example did you note down the main  points from the meeting i used to have a boss  

and any time i had a meeting with him if i came  into that meeting with no paper with no pen  

he would he would not start the meeting he  said okay we're gonna have a long meeting for  

30 minutes 60 minutes you need to note down  the important points from the conversation  

alex go get a pen and a paper good times okay  next to back up now this context is usually used  

for files on your computer so to back up your  files back up your information back up your data  

means to make an extra copy so for  example make sure to back up your files  

a lot of people use you know online storage  spaces to back up important information you  

might have something in your email address you  might have something like the uh at this point  

the cloud or you know like your google drive or  something like that or maybe you have an external  

hard drive where you back up your files or a usb  stick to back up your files so it just means make  

an extra copy in case the original copy gets  deleted or erased by accident or because of a  

virus or something like that all right next uh  come up so if something comes up at the office  

it means that something has happened or it has  arisen so for example an urgent situation has just  

come up so if something comes up it's something  that just happens surprises you so for example  

if one of your employees if you are a boss for  example and one of your employees quits and  

you're you're in a meeting and the employee comes  in and quits and you say i i can't finish this  

meeting something urgent has come up somebody  is quitting okay so something comes up happens  

arises without kind of you expecting it to okay  next keep up with so to keep up with something  

means to follow or to keep pace with something  in the context of business office work let me  

give you one example have you been keeping up with  the latest news have you been following the latest  

news uh you can also talk about a business keeping  up with trends uh with things that are happening  

in their line of business now okay next set up so  to set something up means to organize it or to you  

know get it started so for example could you help  me set up the new printer could you help me plug  

it in and make sure everything is okay make sure  the software is on the computer and could you help  

me set it up um it's not only for objects you can  set up a meeting or organize a meeting you can set  

up a holiday party for example next go through so  if you go through something this simply means you  

experienced it and usually it's something  difficult that you had to survive so  

he's going through a difficult time think of  you're going through like you're experiencing  

something that is difficult and challenging okay  next find out so to find out means to discover or  

to obtain or get information so for example how  did you find out about our company this is a very  

common question that you will see on company  websites it's also something that you might be  

asked at an interview how did you find out about  our company how did you discover the information  

about our company all right and finally to call  off uh call off means to cancel usually this is  

in the context of a meeting so for example can  we call off the conference call i just realized  

i didn't put a question mark and i didn't close  my quotation marks here just give me a sec guys  

preparation is everything right ah that's what  happens when i have people calling me all day  

okay so call off uh so you can call off a meeting  you can call off a conference call for example for  

example can we call off cancel the conference call  i'm not ready or something important has come up  

all right so today we looked at 10 very important  very common phrasal verbs that you can use at your  

office at your job at work and welcome to this  lesson on five phrasal verbs with get if you are  

watching this you know that phrasal verbs are one  of the most difficult things to master in english  

because they often have an idiomatic meaning  so today we're going to look at five of them  

and they all have get in some way number one  is get up if you've been studying for a while  

you might be familiar with this verb i got up  late today what do you think this means i got  

up late today right it means to rise from  your bed right so to get up is to rise  

from bed um and not only from bed you can get  up from any position where you are lying down  

so to rise from bed or really any lying position

okay um you can also get up from a chair as well  if you're sitting so uh that is the meaning of get  

up so you can ask your friend hey what time did  you get up today i got up at 7 00 a.m or at 6 00  

a.m whatever it is okay number two we have get  along and this can be by itself or you can add  

with you can get along with a person  with someone sorry about that um  

for example my sister gets along with everybody  what do you think the meaning of this is

okay do you think she has a good relationship  or do you think she has a bad relationship  

well the meaning is she has a good relationship  

with everybody so to get along or to  get along with someone is to have a good

relationship

with i'm just going to put s-o for someone  okay um so for example if you get along with  

you one of well of course you get along  with your friends you can get along with  

anybody i mean anybody that you know in your  life if you have a good relationship with them  

you can say yeah we get along the negative is i  don't get along with that person or we don't get  

along so you can say we don't get along or we get  along or if you want to add with yeah i get along  

with her or i get along with him or we don't get  along together as well okay number three we have  

get ahead all right so example if  you want to get ahead work hard  

you have to work hard if you want to get ahead  if you look at the context of the sentence you  

might be able to figure out the meaning and  in this situation get ahead means to succeed

or make progress

okay so if you work in a company and you are  getting ahead in the company it means that you  

started at the bottom and you're working your way  up up up the ladder um then you are getting ahead  

in the company you can get ahead in life even  make progress succeed at something get further  

than other people for example next we have get by  so can you get by without your cell phone uh if  

you look at the context of this sentence can you  identify the meaning okay so it means to survive

okay so if i ask you can you get by without  your cell phone basically i am asking you  

if you can survive without your cell phone so if  i ask you how do you get by without the internet  

how do you get by without your cell phone or how  do you get by without facebook how do you survive  

without these things that are wonderful in  the modern world so how do you survive okay  

um i can also ask you do you think you could  get by with only twenty dollars for one week  

if that's possible right okay finally we  have a pretty simple one i think and that is  

get together so when two people get together it  means that well let's look at the sentence first  

we are getting together for coffee later get  together okay this means we are meeting to meet

okay so when you get together with your friends  you are meeting your friends in one location  

in one place get together can also have another  meaning when you are talking about two people  

who are dating who are seeing each other  um and that means the first time they met  

so for example if i ask you when did you and  your wife or when did you and your husband  

or when did you and your boyfriend or girlfriend  get together this means when did you meet for the  

first time okay so it can also just mean to meet  it's i can say let's get together later all right  

guys to review we have get up which is to get up  from your bed to rise from like a lying position  

or a sitting position we have to get along with  someone which is to have a good relationship to  

get ahead this means to succeed or to make  progress in some aspect of your life to get  

by is to survive you know if i ask you again how  are you doing i am getting by i am surviving not  

doing great but i'm living i'm surviving and  number five get together to meet all right guys

you the context in which you can use each one and  we'll do some very quick pronunciation and repeat  

after me practice as well now after this lesson uh  if you can't get enough of phrasal verb commands

10 more commands uh similar to these ones right  behind me so let's not waste any more time and  

we're gonna go one two three four five six all the  way to 30 and uh we'll do it relatively quickly  

with an example and an explanation of the context  for each so the first one repeat after me back off

this is what you say when you want someone  to you know get out of your personal space  

so usually if you are annoyed at the individual  

you could say back off you are too close to me  okay next backup now backup is similar to back off  

but it can be used in a more formal situation  by someone like you know a police officer  

or a security guard so for example if there is  you know a line where another line is formed and  

you cannot cross this line and you do cross that  line you know a police officer or a security guard  

or someone might ask you to back up back up this  means go back a little bit take a few steps back  

they probably won't say back off back off is much  stronger so you can use backup in a more formal  

situation where you want the person to move out  of the way and to move back a little bit okay  

so back up just move back everybody okay next  carry on so repeat after me carry on this simply  

means continue do what you were doing before so  carry on carry on next repeat after me chill out

this just means be calm relax okay i see you're  upset chill out okay so chill comes from you  

know like to cool to be calmer don't get so hot  be calm be cool chill out next repeat come back

this simply means return okay so hey  come back come back return next come on  

so this can mean to come follow me  come on let's go or if you don't  

you know believe a person's story you want to  show surprise you can say come on really come on  

okay next come in so if you have  invited someone to your house  

you open the door and you want to you know invite  them to enter your house you can say come in

all right so repeat it come in

next come over

so if you are inviting a person to your house  you're talking to them on the phone and you  

want them to come to where you are usually  it's your house but it could be another place  

like your work or a cafe somewhere but usually  it's you know their house you can say hey  

come over i'm free now or come over in 10  minutes okay so this means come to where i  

am uh usually it's the person's house yeah you  can come over come over give a command next  

dream on dream on dream you know that aerosmith  song from the 70s or i think it was the 70s  

and to dream on basically means you don't believe  what this person is saying or they have this big  

big impossible dream in their head or something  like oh i'm gonna play this lottery ticket and  

i'm gonna win the lottery this weekend that's my  plan for the weekend dream on okay so this means  

keep dreaming continue to dream i don't believe  you alright next drink up so repeat drink up

you can say this if you are around a table with  some friends everyone has a glass in their hand of  

their beverage of choice alcoholic non-alcoholic  it's up to you and if you want everybody to drink  

yes you can say cheers you can also say drink up  drink up simply means drink okay so drink drink up

gather around now when i think of  this i think of you know a person  

wanting people to get around them  because they have some important news  

or they want to tell a story so if it's an old man  with a beard and there's lots of children around  

gather around children gather around okay  so gather collect yourselves around me uh  

you want people to come to you say gather around  gather around come here okay next repeat get back

similar to backup get back  also means to take a step  

back that's basically it you can use it in a  standard situation a formal situation you know  

if someone is near a fire like there's a fire get  back get back get back okay next repeat get in

the most common context that i think  of automatically when i think of  

get in is someone is inside a car and they're  telling you hey get in i can give you a drive  

a drive a ride i can give you a ride somewhere  so you can ask someone to get in like inside  

your car it doesn't have to just be a car  but this is the most common context where  

you want someone to enter your vehicle or to  enter your place so get in similar to come in  

but come in is you know usually  related to the house next get off

okay so um if someone is i don't know laying  on top of you maybe you could just say get  

off get off or someone is giving you a hug and  you're not comfortable with hugs like get off me  

and say get off okay also uh if you are online  somewhere and you know you're on a website  

and you know somebody comes behind you and  they want you to eat dinner like it's your  

mom or your dad they might say okay get off the  computer so okay get off or log off get off the  

computer stop doing what you're doing next get  up get up similar to stand up this just means  

elevate yourself from a sitting position or from  a lying down position um and it could be you know  

your roommate or maybe your mom or your dad  or your sister or someone who wakes you up  

and says okay get up get up it's morning it's  time to go get up okay all right next go away

i think you're very familiar with this one  it's in movies it's in tv shows it's everywhere  

means leave me alone so repeat it after me go away

all right next go back

okay so to go back similar to get  back basically means to return  

where you came from or make some room okay  give me more room okay go back go back go back  

or if you're recording someone  and you know you want them to  

go back okay go back go back okay perfect yes  beautiful all right next please repeat grow up

grow up if you give this command to someone  it means that they are acting very immature  

and you want them to act their age to act more  mature say grow up or if someone has a belief  

or something that you think is childish  like they have the beliefs of a child  

say come on you really believe that grow  up okay next hang on repeat it hang on

hang on means whoa whoa whoa stop  stop what you stop what you're saying  

or it can mean to wait so you can say hang  on hang on hang on or if you're talking on  

the phone to someone and you want them to  hold to wait say hang on okay please hold  

or please hang on um or you just wait wait hang on  okay next hang up so this is used in the context  

of phone conversations so if you're talking  to your boyfriend or girlfriend you hang up  

no you hang up no you hang up you know that  kind of stuff you can just say okay hang up  

hang up if you watch cop shows tv shows where  you know the police are tracing a telephone  

number and if they talk to the person for 30  seconds they will magically know where they  

are um you know they might say okay the criminal  might say hang up hang up hang up or the officer  

might say hang up hang up if they don't want the  criminal to know where they are next up lie down  

so if you have a friend and maybe they were out  in the sun all day and they feel weak or they  

look sick and you want them to rest and lie down  on the couch you can say hey just lie down right  

lie down here rest here next listen up i love this  one now this is what you hear also in television  

crime dramas or in any kind of like epic movie  where there's a you know an important scene where  

one character usually the leader needs everyone  to hear what they have to say they'll usually  

enter the office usually with their hands on their  hips like this say all right everybody listen up  

listen to me okay so listen up just means  listen to me listen pay attention with your ears  

the holes in your ears yeah next move along now  move along like you saw me doing at the beginning  

of this video means continue continue in the  direction you were going so this is for physical  

movement uh if you didn't know the scene i was  reenacting with steve and that new bunny character  

thing uh was from star wars so you know obi-wan  says move along and then the stormtrooper says  

move along move along okay there's mind control  so there's like weird jedi powers and stuff next  

move over um very strong it can be very strong if  you want someone to make room for you usually to  

sit down you can tell them to move over to make  room for you move over i i need to sit here too  

okay um you can use this on the bus i guess if  you want to be polite you could say oh could you  

move over please um or if you're trying to walk  and someone is blocking your way say oh excuse me  

could you move over a bit could you move over  please okay next shut up now this one i think  

you guys know uh also it's in every tv show movie  it's rude it's telling a person to be quiet um if  

you want to say something you know just as strong  you could say shut your mouth which is very strong  

or just shut up means stop talking i don't  want to hear what you have to say alright next  

i always erase stuff with my my elbow so sit down  just another way to say sit so i just realized  

you guys didn't listen and repeat these words with  me so before we get to sit down repeat lie down

listen up

move along

extra points if you did the  alec guinness accent move over

shut up

i don't like saying that right sit down

so sit down is just please sit okay next  uh very useful if you you know have a  

friend who has a low voice and they speak very  quietly and it's very difficult to hear them  

you want them to speak louder you can  say speak up speak up i can't hear you so  

turn the volume up on your voice okay so to  speak up means to speak louder i can't hear you  

okay so speak up stand up so we had  sit down opposite of sit down is  

yeah stand up that's all just another way to say  stand wake up hey wake up this goes with get up  

right if you don't know the difference  with wake up and get up wake up is when you  

open your eyes in the morning get up is when  you leave your bed okay when you actually  

stand and start your day so uh you know you can  tell your friend hey wake up wake up wake up  

okay and finally quiet down this  is kind of the opposite of speak up  

if you want people to speak quieter or if you  want a whole group of people who are speaking  

very loudly to be quieter you could say  okay quiet down everybody quiet down

okay all right so we got 30 of these and  i know we've done some like random repeat  

after me pronunciation uh but before we leave  reviewing recalling redoing the same thing  

helps it to stick so let's do it one more time

i haven't what am i saying i haven't seen it in  a long time see i'm so upset i'm so frustrated  

i don't even know how to speak properly so did he  ever give back your book did he ever return your  

book to you okay so give back number one to return  something to someone number two let's take a look

to do something for a person a community etc to  show gratitude for something that they did for  

you so if you grew up in a community if you grew  up in you know a religious community for example  

and when you're a child they did a lot for you  you went to parties they took care of you you  

made your friends there and it was a very  positive community for you to be a part of  

and as you get older maybe you're not part  of this community as much anymore but you're  

so grateful for what they did for you that  you want to give back to them now you can  

give back financially you know you can make a  donation to them you can also give back through  

your time through volunteering for something  so you can give back to a community a person  

a website it doesn't matter if something had  a positive impact on you and you want to show  

your gratitude you can give back to them or it so  for example very common sentence and this is why  

i chose it i want to give back to my community  i want to do something for my community to show  

that i am grateful for everything they have done  for me next she has never given back to her family  

obviously this is a negative sentence and it  means that she is ungrateful that she has never  

given anything back not her time or anything  to show gratitude for everything her family has  

done for her so again it's a negative example but  it is an example all right finally number three

to return an emotion or feeling to someone  that he or she stopped feeling now another  

way to you know say this is to get back an  emotion or feeling so you can give an emotion  

or feeling back to a person or you can get it  back yourself so two example sentences here he  

lost his passion he needs to get it back right so  he needs to get back his passion you can get back  

your passion for something you can give someone  back their confidence or their love of something  

so imagine that you used to love the star wars  movies right the original three star wars movies  

and then the prequel trilogy happened and you said  i don't really like star wars anymore and then  

jj abrams makes the force awakens and you're like  oh he has given me back my love of star wars it's  

not necessarily true for me but maybe it's true  for you the third movie is just i have feelings  

about that third movie not all of them are  positive but back to the lesson so second example

yoga has helped to give her back her confidence so  yoga has helped to give her back her confidence so  

if someone is not a confident person maybe  they lost their confidence because of a bad  

relationship or they lost their job and they  don't feel good and they start exercising  

and you can say you know what my yoga routine or  my exercise routine has really given me back my  

confidence i am getting back my confidence because  of this action so three definitions three uses for  

the phrasal verb give back one more time let's do  a quick review one to return something to someone  

give it back give me back my phone two to do  something for a community or person to show  

gratitude to say thank you for something that they  did for you i want to give back to my community  

i want to give back to my church i need to give  back to my family for everything they have done  

for me and number three to return an emotion  or feeling to someone that they lost feeling  

maybe because of a depression maybe because of  something negative that happened to them and you  

want to give them back their confidence their  passion their love for something so if you want

different ways that we can use this very common  phrasal verb so let's look at the top the first  

sentence says i can't make out what you're saying  in this situation do you think you can understand  

what the person is saying or you can't understand  what the person is saying well if you look at the  

negative it means that you can't understand  so one meaning of make out is to hear or see

uh what a person is saying or if you see an  object in the distance and you can't really tell  

very clearly what it is this means that you  can't make it out or you can make it out  

so imagine you're watching a youtube video and  there's a person speaking in the background  

and maybe they're speaking very low and you  have to listen very carefully to understand what  

they're saying so you listen listen and you say oh  i don't no i can't make out what he's saying like  

i can't hear it okay um also if you're looking  at a picture and in one corner of the picture  

maybe there's a small little object and you don't  know what it is and somebody tells you that it's  

maybe a laptop and you look at it you say no  i can't make it out i can't i can't see it  

properly okay so this is one meaning the  second sentence says i made the check out  

to the president now a check is a piece of paper  that you give to someone when you want to pay for  

something right you write your name you write  the amount of money you're going to give to the  

person the company the organization so in this  situation you can make a check out to a person  

which just means you make the check payable  to a person okay so this means to make a check

payable okay to someone um and you  always usually we make out a check  

to a person okay the next one says don't make  out like you know the answer so imagine you're  

in a math class and you have a student who thinks  that they know the answer to a difficult question  

so they pretend like they know the answer  but they really don't know the answer  

they're just trying to look smarter than the  other students so don't make out like you  

know what i'm talking about or don't make  out like you know the answer don't pretend

okay the fourth way we can  use make out how is your son  

making out at school so we can use this  to mean how is your son progressing okay  

so make out can also mean to progress or  how is he doing as well okay so to progress

do or perform

so for example i can ask you hey how did you make  out on your driving exam how did you make out  

on your final exam for history so how did you do  how did you perform how did you progress here you  

notice we're actually using it in the progressive  tense right so how is he making out how is he  

progressing or performing okay number five i saw  them making out at the party now in this situation  

this is usually the most common way that we  use make out and if you've seen it taught  

in schools if you've seen it taught in other  videos basically it means to kiss passionately

okay so to kiss

with lots of passion

not just a normal regular soft kiss but uh really  passionate with the other person okay number six  

i can't make out what it says at the bottom so  this is actually similar to number one where you  

can't hear or see or understand but this refers to  very small details so you're reading your reading  

you're reading and maybe you need glasses so at  the bottom you look at the bottom and you say  

i can't make out what it says on the  bottom if you're reading a document or  

a book or something like this okay so in  this situation make out means to decipher

small details

okay to notice a very small detail like i can't  make it out i can't see it in this situation okay  

and we can't make him out so if you can't make  a person out again it's not very very common  

to use it in this way but basically it means you  can't understand this person you can't figure out  

what type of personality they have  okay so this means to understand

someone's character or someone's personality

okay guys so as you can see there are many ways  that we can use just one single phrasal verb  

today that phrasal verb was make out now let's  just quickly review the different meanings  

so i can't make out what you're saying like i  can't understand you correctly i can't hear you  

correctly maybe you have food in your mouth  or maybe the audio quality of a video i'm  

watching is really bad i made the check out to the  president so i wrote the president's name on the  

check i made the check out to him or her number  three don't make out like you know the answer  

don't try to pretend right don't pretend that  you know the answer how is your son making out at  

school how is he performing how is he doing i saw  them making out at the party i saw them kissing  

passionately at the party uh i can't make out what  it says at the bottom i can't see the very small

in your job interview so let's begin first go  over so to go over something means to review  

it in detail so you might hear your you know  the interviewer say i was going over your cv  

or you might say to the interviewer i was  going over your website i was going over  

your the job description maybe you noticed the  advertisement for the job online or you noticed  

it on their website and you say i went over  your website i went over the job description  

or maybe the person interviewing you says okay i'm  going over your cv and it says here that you have  

five years of experience in crisis management  for example okay so this means to review right  

to look you can go over a website go over a job  description go over a resume or cv next take on  

so this is something that you can use a phrasal  verb you can use to talk about you know one of  

your strengths so to take on something means to  begin to handle or deal with something such as i  

like taking on like take on right like you're very  active you're jumping on things i like taking on  

new challenges i like taking on responsibilities  i like taking on major projects right where i'm  

the one who's responsible for it i like taking on  a leadership role i like being a leader so to take  

on means you know to begin to handle something or  deal with something like you're attacking jumping  

on it and you are taking on a challenge taking on  responsibility taking on projects you can really  

use this to sell yourself in a job interview  which is really the goal of a job interview  

as well as you know the employer should  be selling themselves to you as well  

so carry out so to carry out something means  to do a particular piece of work so one of my  

strengths is carrying out difficult tasks carrying  out complex analyses so if you carry out something  

you do the work you don't just say you're going  to do it you say you're gonna do it and you do  

it okay so i often carry out difficult complex  analyses i carry out difficult tasks i carry out  

a lot of different projects for example all right  next if you want to talk about your punctuality  

or you might hear your employer potential  employer asking about your punctuality  

you can use the phrasal verbs get in or show up  to talk about the times that you arrive for work  

for example you might hear the person say oh thank  you for showing up early thank you for coming to  

the interview for arriving at the interview  early now of course this will depend on the  

formality of your employer of the person you're  speaking to some interviewers are very casual  

others are more formal so thank you for  showing up early show up is a bit more casual  

than some of the other phrasal verbs on this list  and you might say you know i i consider myself  

to be a punctual person i like to get in a few  minutes early you know before my shift starts  

or before i have to start work right next  speak up so if you are someone who speaks up  

you like to express your ideas or  your feelings freely openly frankly  

you're not hiding things you're not shy  you're not timid you speak up okay so  

i speak up if i notice areas for  improvement so you want to say you know what  

if i'm working at a company and i see a deficiency  i notice something that could be better i speak up  

about it i talk to the people who can make  a difference who can make a decision who can  

change this issue who can change and improve this  problem can you improve a problem you know what  

i mean find a solution okay so um i speak up  if i feel someone isn't being treated fairly  

i speak up if i notice injustice essentially um in  the workplace okay so depending on your employer  

you know this is a positive trait um it's good  to speak up most people want their employees to  

speak up and express their ideas or express their  feelings on how they feel the company can improve  

depending on your employer sometimes  speaking up is not super great if you  

do it like all the time so just be careful you  guys you know what i'm talking about all right  

all right so we have done one two three four  five phrasal verbs i said there would be ten  

in this lesson so let's do five more  i'm gonna go look at them over there  

here we are next to depend on or rely on someone  means to trust someone so this is a positive trait  

that you can mention to your employer that you  have so for example you can say at my last job  

my last employer relied on me trusted me depended  on me to coordinate employee schedules maybe  

you were a coordinator at your last job my last  employer relied on me depended on me trusted me  

to provide accurate sales reports maybe you were a  sales associate maybe you were a marketing manager  

and you had to provide accurate sales reports  to your boss this is a good thing so please use  

you can depend on me you can rely on me my last  job my last employer relied on me depended on me  

to do something to deliver something next call  in to call in simply means to call work to tell  

them something now most often we use the phrasal  verb call in when we want to talk about being sick  

and having to tell our employer that we  cannot come into work because we are sick so i  

rarely call in sick an employer would view that  as a bonus right that you are not often sick  

that you're healthy and um you can say yeah  i never call in sick i rarely call in sick  

you can also use this to you know before your job  interview so before your job interview maybe you  

call the employer and say hello i'm calling  in because i dropped off my resume last week  

and i just like to know if you have had a chance  to review it okay so you can call in basically  

to call okay next keep up with to keep up with  things means to stay up to date stay current stay  

recent so you might tell your potential employer i  like to keep up with technology i like to keep up  

with market trends i like to keep up with client  expectations okay so these are things where you  

stay recent you stay current you stay up to date  with the latest things okay it's a positive trait  

i'm saying okay a lot this video not something you  want to do in a job interview um although maybe  

okay okay okay yeah maybe employers like that  depends on the person all right next follow-up to  

follow-up means to review or to revisit something  again later or to contact someone again to give  

them more information so for example the person  who interviews you might say we will be following  

up with candidates in one week so maybe it's the  end of the interview you're shaking hands and they  

say yes we are following up with candidates in one  week we are contacting them again to give them the  

results of the interview and you can also follow  up on on a project you can follow up with your  

clients so you can say it's like yeah i like  to follow up with clients like within 24 hours  

after our initial interview or our initial  meeting if you work with clients directly and then  

similar to follow-up but specifically related  to communicating to get back to someone  

means to return communication all right  so you can follow up on an issue a problem  

a situation but to get back to someone strictly  refers to returning communication with someone  

so thank you for getting back to me i try  to get back to clients within 24 hours  

so i will get back to you this means i will  return communication once i have more information  

okay so what time should i come  in for the uh for the interview  

um i'll get back to you on that uh give me you  know i will call you later basically because maybe  

they don't have their schedule in front of them  and they will get back to you all right so that is  

10 phrasal verbs for job interviews of course  i cannot plan i cannot foresee every single  

interview situation you will come across so there  are countless phrasal verbs that you can use  

in a job interview setting the ones i've chosen  here are some of the more common ones that you  

can hopefully use practically at your next job  interview or maybe these are ones that you will  

hear at a next job interview situation when you  apply for that next english job so i wish you

can have multiple meanings and this is one  of them so i'm going to give you five usages  

five definitions of get out as well  as at least two examples per usage  

so that you will have a clear understanding  of the various ways you can use get out

get on with the lesson so get out the most common  definition the most common usage of get out is to  

leave exit or escape a place or usually bad  situation so usually we're talking about leaving  

exiting okay a place but you can also use it  to talk about leaving or escaping a usually bad  

situation let's look at the example sentences  as i walk over and almost trip over myself okay  

so get out of the car okay so here is a  command maybe your friend is giving it to you  

because they're really you know they don't want  to be late for wherever you're going like come  

on stop playing with your phone get out of the car  let's go and like i said a bad situation she just  

got out of a bad relationship now  what you'll notice with get out a very  

common extension a common preposition that  goes after get out is of so you get out of  

a place get out of a bad situation  so get out of trouble for example  

next let's look at this definition so to force  or help someone leave exit or escape a place or  

usually bad situation so this is the structure of  this one is to get someone out okay so you help  

that person or maybe you force that person  out of a place or a situation for example  

get him out of my house now so maybe this is a  father and his daughter or his son they brought  

home a boyfriend girlfriend in this case it would  be a boyfriend and they say i don't like this guy  

or he saw him do something that he didn't agree  with and he said get him out of my house now next  

she got him out of trouble so her friend was  in trouble she helped him get out of trouble  

she helped him to leave that situation leave  that problem you can you know help someone get  

out of jail or prison for example if you pay  money or maybe you do a prison break which that  

would be a movie and i don't think he would do  that anyway so let's keep going next so get out  

to leave your house and enjoy yourself this  is similar to go out a very common sentence  

this is kind of advice that people give to  their friends or colleagues family members  

you need to get out more okay you stay in your  house all day you watch tv you play on your phone  

and you're starting to look a little pale you're  not healthy maybe and you say you need some fresh  

air you need to get out more leave your house  go do something enjoy yourself out of your house  

next example uh i need to get out this weekend  like i need to leave like i'm i'm stuck at home i  

have been imagine you're working at home all week  and you haven't left your house and you say oh i  

need to get out this weekend so it's similar to  to go out right to see your friends or just leave  

your home and have a new experience enjoy yourself  next you can see it better if i go this way  

i'm going to trip over myself today guys you see  what i'm working with this is a wire over here  

all right so uh to remove something from a bag  container etc it's the same as to take something  

out right so i can take out or get my phone out of  my pocket so example please get your homework out  

so your teacher if you are going to to a class  they might say please get your homework out of  

your bag right so show me your homework get  it out of your school bag another example

get that gum out of your mouth right so take  it out of your mouth maybe a parent to a child  

maybe a teacher to a student i mean depending on  where you are in the world some some parents will  

find that rude if a teacher says that to uh to  their son or daughter like get that gum out of  

your mouth it's a little strong but maybe a parent  to a child would say that right so get that out  

take that out of your mouth finally number  five to make secret information public  

so for example news of their divorce got out  quickly so someone found out that they were  

getting divorced maybe this is a celebrity divorce  and suddenly somebody from the tmz website like a  

popular paparazzi website news website celebrity  news website gets the information and posts it  

and the information spreads very quickly news  of their divorce got out quickly it was a secret  

and now it's getting out the information was  secret now it's not secret it's getting out  

next make sure this information doesn't get out so  this could be a boss right who's telling something  

very secret to his managers or her managers and  it's very secret because maybe they're saying  

okay the company only has enough money to survive  another three months only you know this and you  

know this i'm telling you because i trust you  make sure this information doesn't get out all  

right so one more time to leave exit or escape a  place or usually bad situation to force someone or  

help someone to leave or escape a bad situation to  leave your house and enjoy yourself like to go out  

to remove something from a bag or container  and to make secret information public  

so as you can see this is a very versatile phrasal  verb with a lot of different usages now i hope
