BRITISH ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION (RP accent) - /əʊ/ vowel sound (oh, no, go)

Today we're going to talk about another diphthong, and this one is the 'oh'

OK, so 'əʊ' is a diphthong, and it is formed of 'ə' and 'ʊ'...əʊ

Ok, so 2 vowel sounds, 1 syllable

So your mouth shape with change throughout the duration of the syllable

əʊ....əʊ....

So I often hear many of my Hispanic students saying 'no', 'go', 'close', 'clothes' 'hope'

This is WRONG!

Stop doing it! You know it's wrong so stop it!

So some words with the letter 'o' are bone, close, home thone

From 'Game of Thrones', I never wanna hear 'Geim of zrons' again

Or worse, 'geim of zrones'

I've heard someone same 'geim of zrones'

zrones! ni voy a decir nada

So firstly we have the 'o', consonant and 'e'

So we have bone, close

Then we have with just plain old 'o'

So we've got both, almost, local, open, over

Then we've got words just ending in 'o': ago, go, no

No is so (ooh there's another one) important

No! No sounds very babyish to us, that's what a baby would say 'no!'

But erm...no...no...must be no!

Then we've got words with 'oa', so boat, goat, coat

not co-at, or bo-at, boat, coat, throat,

toast (not to-ast) toast!

Words ending in 'oe', toe, the name Joe, foe

Words ending in -ow like borrow, or follow, or grow!

Then we've got words with -ou like although, or dough
