Today we’re going to talk about school vocabulary, in English!

We go to school to learn. In the U.S.,  school means

우리는 배우기 위해 학교에 갑니다. 미국에서 학교는

any place where people learn. 

사람들이 배우는 모든 장소를 의미합니다.

For young students, school includes elementary school,

middle school, and high school. After high school, students can go to college or university,

When you go to school, you spend your time in the classroom with your teacher and classmates.

You learn with your classmates and work together. We can also say – schoolmates,

fellow students or peers. Peers are people who are the

same age as you or in the same grade. They don’t always have to be in the same class, but

that helps students understand the natural world. You follow a schedule every day. A schedule is

In the U.S. and Australia, they call it recess.  In the UK, it's called a break or playtime.  

미국과 호주에서는 휴회(Recess)라고 부릅니다. 영국에서는 휴식(break) 또는 플레이타임(playtime)이라고 합니다.

In every school, there is a principal. This  person is like the boss of the school. They

Sometimes, a teacher gives you a quiz or a test

Each term, you’ll get a report card. This card  shows your grades. It tells you how well you

did in your subjects. A grade is a score or  letter (like A, B, C) that shows how well you

In different countries, grades can be  very different. In the United States,

grades are often letters like A, B, C, D, and F. A usually means you did excellent work.  

성적이 A, B, C, D, F와 같은 문자로 표시되는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 A는 우수한 성적을 의미합니다.

B means you did good work. C means your work is okay but could be better.  

B는 당신이 좋은 일을 했다는 뜻이에요. C는 귀하의 작업이 괜찮지만 더 나아질 수 있음을 의미합니다.

D means you need improvement. F means you failed.  

D는 개선이 필요하다는 뜻입니다. F는 당신이 실패했음을 의미합니다.

The higher the grade, the better the work was. It’s important to come to school every day. When

you come to school we can say – you attend school.  Attend. Attend means to be present at a place.  

당신이 학교에 올 때, 우리는 당신이 학교에 다니고 있다고 말할 수 있습니다. 참석하다. Attend는 어떤 장소에 참석한다는 뜻입니다.

Teachers take attendance every day to check  which students are in class and who is absent.  

교사는 매일 출석을 확인하여 수업에 참여하는 학생과 결석하는 학생을 확인합니다.

When you come to school, you learn new things from  your teacher. To learn better, you need to study  

학교에 오면 선생님으로부터 새로운 것을 배웁니다 . 더 잘 배우려면

at home by reading and doing your homework. But  what is the difference between learn and study?  

집에서 책을 읽고 숙제를 하면서 공부해야 합니다. 그런데 배우다와 공부하다의 차이점은 무엇인가요?

Learn means to get new knowledge or skills.  It's when you understand something new.  

배우다(Learn)는 새로운 지식이나 기술을 얻는 것을 의미합니다. 새로운 것을 이해하는 순간입니다.

Study means to spend time practicing or  reading to understand something better,

like studying for a test to remember facts. Sometimes, you have to memorize important facts,

so you can remember them for a test.  Memorize means to keep information

Participate means to join in  and take part in an activity.  

참여는 활동에 참여하고 참여하는 것을 의미합니다.

When you participate, you are actively doing  something with others. You can participate

in a class discussion. You can participate in a  group project or a group activity. You can fully

participate in something. Fully participate  means you are helping as much as possible,

sharing your ideas, and working with your group. If there is a math problem, you will need to

solve it by thinking about it carefully. To  solve means to find the answer to a problem.

You might also need to research information  for a project by looking in books or online.

Research can be used as both a noun and a verb,  and their pronunciation is a little different:  

Research는 명사와 동사로 모두 사용될 수 있으며 발음이 약간 다릅니다.

As a noun, it is pronounced like: REE-search. Example: "I did some research on animals."  

명사로서 REE-search처럼 발음됩니다. 예: "저는 동물에 대해 연구를 좀 했어요."

As a verb, it is pronounced like: ri-SERCH Example: "I need to research this topic  

동사로는 다음과 같이 발음됩니다. ri-SERCH 예: "내 프로젝트를 위해 이 주제를 조사해야 합니다

for my project."

Please pay attention to the stress here. When you miss a class, you need to catch up

on the work you missed so you can be at  the same level as the other students.  

다른 학생과 같은 수준이 될 수 있도록 해야 합니다.

For example, if you were absent, you need to  catch up by finishing the lessons you missed.

At the end of your school journey, there is  graduation. This is when you finish school

and celebrate all you’ve learned. When you graduate from high school,
