How To Use Your English Words More Fluently

uh and doing my best to answer those  let's see if we have come on YouTube

and here we go all right I think we're  working now okay I am Drew Badger the  

founder of englishanyone.com and the English  fluency guide and today as usual we're going  

to be talking about how to speak more  confidently and fluently but without  

learning a bunch of new vocabulary uh  I want to begin today make sure the  

camera is straight I think this should  be working all right let me know oh no

to see you well nice to see everybody out there  I want to begin today with a quick story and uh I  

thought this was just I I don't think I've shared  this story on the channel before I think I maybe  

thought to mention it but uh let me tell it to you  today because I was just thinking about this uh is  

it real time yes this is happening right now look  at that I'm responding to your comment in real  

time uh but if you're watching this later  obviously it's a recorded video and lo nice  

or L uh I think I'm pronouncing that correctly I  think that doesn't that mean light if I'm correct  

from Colombia nice to see you there all right  uh so here's this quick story this happened uh  

I don't know like a month ago but I was out with  a Japanese friend of mine and we were going to uh  

just some local bar restaurants after after his  work um and we went to a couple different places  

and we both noticed something very interesting we  went to two different places in particular that  

this was very obvious uh and this was how good the  uh like the bartender was at speaking uh and and  

again this is in Japan so we are speaking Japanese  this is just local places here in Nagasaki uh so  

we weren't speaking English and this was not  about like language learning this is Japanese  

people using Japanese well uh and for the context  of a bar if you think about like usually Japanese  

bars a a good bartender especially if the if  the customers are trying to speak the bartender  

will actually talk with you and and try to have a  good conversation about things uh and so we were  

we were sitting there we went to this first place  and this guy uh it was just a guy running a a bar  

by himself he has lots of interesting bottles  of alcohol from all over the world and we were  

really interested just like oh you know we we  thought we were going to learn some interesting  

lessons he actually made us some really uh good  drinks we were pleased with the drinks but he  

didn't speak very well and when I say he didn't  speak very well he didn't he didn't like engage  

with us we were trying to ask him questions like  we asked wow you have a lot of alcohol over here  

what is your favorite and just said like I like  all of them and even if that's true it's probably  

not but even if it is true it's much better as the  bartender to to think of some kind of story he's  

got basically all these bottles around him it's  hard to give a like a demonstration of this cuz  

I'm just standing here in this room with nothing  going on uh but imagine yourself it's kind of a  

like an old bar lots of old bottles even things  from you know 50 years ago or older than that it  

looks like almost he found a like a sunken pirate  ship and found a bunch of bottles of alcohol that  

were down at the bottom of the ocean and he  brought them back up into his bar and so he  

had all these interesting bottles he had some new  you know regular alcohol you know beer whatever  

also but it was just a really interesting looking  bar so the bar looked really nice and he had lots  

of opportunity to engage us in a conversation and  probably that kind of story would have led to more  

sales so we went in there we had a drink we stayed  for a little bit but uh he you know we we just we  

didn't like we like the atmosphere but it was it  was just a little bit sad we were trying to talk  

with the guy cuz we we like to talk uh but we got  uh not much back from this guy now after that we  

went to a different place that was a little bit uh  up the street and this place was I don't I don't I  

thought I thought it was supposed to be women kind  of dressed up like like medical you know like a  

doctor or something like that but it but they said  it was a a pajama bar even though they weren't  

really it didn't really look like pajamas um but  so we we went there and uh at this bar there were  

a few different girls behind the bar so the first  place we went to uh that it was just one guy in  

in the bar by himself and this place it was a few  different girls behind the bar uh and this girl  

had a few board games just like regular kid you  know games that you could play like a board game  

a physical game uh on the shelf behind her uh and  she didn't really have much alcohol actually she  

just had just like some beer and other little  things and it was a pretty small menu so the  

first bar we went to had a much wider selection  of alcohol and second place had a actually very  

narrow selection of alcohol uh but even though she  also had a very just you know it was about maybe  

five games that she had like Jenga and you know  other things like that that you could physically  

do something with uh and these are great for  having conversations or just having something  

to do so we played this game where uh I can I  can try to describe it for you maybe you might  

know what this is but it's basically a he hexagon  shaped thing I'm not going to draw a whole bunch  

of these hexagons in here but imagine these are  hexagons all in here so a hexagon is a six-sided  

shape 1 2 3 4 5 6 a hexagon hex h e x hexagon so a  hexagon uh and it had all of these little hexagons  

in it and they are supposed to be pieces of ice  and you take a small hammer and hit the uh hit  

the little try to knock the pieces out and if you  uh if you knock all of them down then you lose so  

the point of the game is to is to try to not lose  you want to you know maybe poke one of these it's  

kind of like a little table and you try to poke  the uh little pieces of ice there and then try  

not to knock the whole thing down and so we had  a lot of fun playing this game and of course we  

were spending money while we were playing and so  she you know she had again it was just like a few  

games that she had um and a few different kinds  of alcohol but we enjoyed that experience much  

more because we're getting to sit and talk and you  know she's telling us things and we're playing the  

game um and the the kind of bigger picture about  this for the uh kind of like the lesson today uh  

is that you might have more resources like more  vocabulary but the people who actually know how to  

use those resources well are the people who speak  well and usually have better interactions with  

people so even though this one guy had lots of  you know bottles of things he could have told some  

interesting stories about like wow I found this  bottle when I went to Africa and did something  

I climbed up a mountain or something you know  whatever if it's true or not I have no idea uh  

but it makes an interesting story and then he can  say would you like to try some and then of course  

we're like well we got to try the mysterious  alcohol from Africa or whatever you know something  

like that uh and so that that could have been his  like his thing but he didn't do that I don't know  

why he didn't do that he was maybe just kind of  shy again the drink he made for us was good uh we  

did enjoy that but we didn't feel like spending  more time in that place but the second place we  

had a lot of fun and you know we're just talking  with this girl and I think we played I don't know  

like four or five rounds of this game and she beat  us every time I think I lost maybe the most out of  

all of us but uh it was a lot of fun and anyway  she had again a smaller selection of alcohol a  

smaller selection of things to do but even with  just one game she was able to change the rules  

a little bit or she was like let's try it this  way now or that way she was able to take this one  

thing and make an interesting evening I think  we were there for maybe an hour and a half or  

something like that anyway uh the moral the lesson  of the story here is that people are constantly  

thinking I have to get more or I to know more  but if you can understand what I'm saying right  

now you already have enough to speak fluently the  difference is how well do you know that vocabulary  

so lots of people are trying to learn more  but they still don't feel very confident about  

speaking and that's because you don't become  more confident by knowing more you become more  

confident by actually knowing that vocabulary  really well so I thought I would give you a  

few examples of this uh just understanding this  idea of making connections knowing the vocabulary  

better that way you can actually use it more  confidently and fluently but let me check the uh

already C says hi again and T says good morning  see again what is the difference between nail  

and a spike m if you're talking about like like a  nail is in a uh like this this kind of nail like  

the like nail for hammering uh typically a nail  is going to be smaller than a spike and a spike is  

often uh has a more of like a shape like this and  this this is one of those like tiny differences  

between things that it's not really important  but generally a spike uh is going to be larger  

so it's usually like a bigger a bigger thing like  rather than a a nail which is smaller uh and a  

nail is typically like a thin thing with a fat top  on it and a spike is going to be larger like that  

uh but again like yeah it's PE like people and and  typically like a spike it depends on the context  

of it like if we're if we're talking about like  here's a like a gate a gate to get into a house  

it might have you know some like things on the  top we would call these spikes on the top we  

wouldn't call that a nail so part of it is a  size part of it is a slight difference in the  

shape that's an interesting question but yes you  will notice little things like that as natives  

are using it but if you call this little thing a  spike you know if it's like a small thing you're  

using for hammering uh wood together then natives  might think that's a little bit weird uh let's  

see and let's see Anonymous a Japanese and  American guy walking to a bar yes yes uh and  

Steven 6 says hello I'm from Taiwan nice to  see you there Neils Anette M Anette back in  

Wisconson there and just random Channel how can  you improve your English vocabulary well that's  

what we're talking about in this video there're  basically two things you can do the first one  

is to learn more vocabulary which I don't really  recommend it's nice if you know that vocabulary  

but we're going to talk about the other one which  is to actually know that vocabulary better so many  

English Learners they know a lot of words and they  have a basically I guess you'd call it a like a  

I'm like forgetting my English over here a passive  vocabulary so they understand those words when  

they hear them but they can't recall them well  and use them fluently so they continue to learn  

more words and grow this passive vocabulary but  but don't really feel like they're becoming more  

fluent and it's because they they don't really uh  learn that vocabulary better so uh it's actually  

it's interesting you mention this idea of a spike  like when you're learning vocabulary you want to  

push that Spike deeper and deeper into your head  and so if you imagine uh like here's a I'm I can't  

even draw a person over here this is supposed to  be it's like an alien I don't know with the weird  

nose or something that's supposed to be a person  here these are that's I guess a lip or something  

but if you think about learning vocabulary here's  our uh Spike when we put something into our brain  

most people put the vocabulary only in a little  bit so they they learn something but they don't  

really feel confident there's still some kind of  doubt about it so they don't they don't really  

think about it much more and so when people are  learning vocabulary they do this they think okay  

I kind of understand that let me move to the next  word and try to learn what I'm recommending is you  

actually keep putting more pressure on the spike  to push it further into your head all right so  

as you push it further and further down I mean  it should be looking like this where now that  

that vocabulary is buried very deeply into your  head and so that way you will remember it you  

will feel confident using it because you have  no doubt about the word and then you will speak  

fluently all right so you don't have to think  about learning lots of words but you should be  

learning this vocab ulary well this is one of  the most important lessons I discovered about  

language learning when I was first getting fluent  in Japanese and the reason I was struggling is  

because I was trying to learn lots of vocabulary  rather than really understand that vocabulary very  

well so I'm telling you now in this video instead  of trying to add more vocabulary just think about  

the vocabulary you already know try to learn it  better understand it better make more connections  

between those different words you already know  and you will speak better I guarantee it all  

all right uh good question though about nails and  spikes sometimes I get just like an odd you know  

question about a random topic here let's see uh  Marcel says Ho again uh from Chile alcohol isn't  

good for you old man yes well I I don't I try not  to drink too much but you know I I actually rarely  

I don't really really drink so much nowadays but  Carla says can you give me an idea on what is  

the best routine to improve my English uh routine  routine is more I don't know I would I would more  

recommend you pick a specific topic whatever  you're interested in and learn a lot about  

that thing I talked in my previous video about  improving your fluency with reading and I show you  

how to really go deep into a book so I recommend  you watch that previous video um I forget the name  

of it it's but it's talking about like developing  fluency with reading or something like that you'll  

see me holding up uh some books in the thumbnail  for that video um but the general idea is that  

like this hitting this Spike into your head more  and more most people they don't actually take more  

time to learn the vocabulary to really destroy all  of the doubt that they have about that vocabulary  

so you become fluent by knowing the vocabulary  better not just by learning more words okay so  

the point is like instead of instead of thinking  about like how can I learn more how you want  

to understand better that's the goal hopefully  that makes sense I'm actually working on a new  

a new guide like an updated guide to fluency that  explains all of this because I have I explain all  

these things in different videos and I want to  make sure uh everybody gets this idea all right  

uh let's see and I think let's see siir says I'm  good at casual conversation but when in a critical  

situation such as an interview I can't speak  fluently what should I do well that it sounds  

more like nervousness and and maybe the best thing  for something like an interview is actually to  

prepare for that by maybe watching other people  uh do interviews or learning more about what you  

would say so often we have it's it's really  a psychology thing a psychological thing that  

happens so you are creating that nervousness  in your head there's nothing really different  

about speaking with one person or speaking with  another it's like when you're playing a a sports  

game like a basketball game the first point is  really really easy but when you think it's like  

the last point of the game everybody thinks it's  like very psychologically different but you're  

physically doing the same thing so you have to  learn more uh to control that but it's easier  

with uh preparation uh let's see Moos say yes we  are here Louis says hello from auab Boa I don't  

know where that is but hello and welcome I think  we can use the story about a bottle of wine from  

Africa you had shared yes I think like so I just  made that up I have no idea but like if you're  

especially if you're working at a bar if it's  your own thing usually it's because you like the  

alcohol and or you know something about it or you  like the story or you know some interesting thing  

like that um and sharing those stories that's  the interesting thing that that customers would  

probably care about because you can go to many  different places and get different alcohol but  

if you go to a place and they tell you a really  good story you're probably going to go back so  

you will distinguish yourself uh as a as a barkeep  or a bartender uh you know doing providing that  

kind of service because again like you can get  alcohol anywhere that's why even like the second  

place we went to there are lots of girls working  at bars and they've got you know like beer and a  

couple of other things like that so there's no  real difference there the point of difference  

was this girl was good at you know creating an  experience that was memorable and different and  

she was able to do a lot with very little okay so  instead of she didn't have like a th000 games she  

had five games a few different kinds of alcohol  and you know we had a nice evening because of  

that uh let's see sakita says how can I practice  pronunciation I can read write listen and think  

in English but when I speak my pronunciation  is very poor it is very difficult when I try  

to do it alone uh you should just get Frederick  click on the link in the description below this

way you understand pronunciation is uh learning  the different sounds of English and what words  

or what letters make those sounds and when you  understand how that works you will know exactly

the difference uh between I understand a lot of  words for example and I understand what do you  

talking about but when I can't speak take time to  take time I can't control my conversation I think  

I feel confused all right I I think I understand  what you're saying you're saying you understand uh  

but you have trouble speaking yes let me know  if that's um if that's your issue but most of  

my videos talk about this and the the basic IDE  is that you just don't know the vocabulary well  

enough that's why you have lots of mistakes in  your writing so it's easier to understand people  

when other people are speaking that's the easy  part the more difficult part is when you have  

to do something when you have to put words  together uh and and try to make connections  

that allow you to speak fluently so that's what  we're talking about in this video but I I would  

recommend you just watch like any any of my recent  video my live ones and you'll get the uh the the  

general advice about how to do that uh so yes  so listening and speaking are different things  

yes uh let's see said bro and that's interesting  so you say you use the word bro and then there's  

actually say bro after that that's interesting  Michelle says hello from Brazil look at that  

with the green and yellow Hearts Richard is back  my issu is that I have a lot of vocabulary in my  

head but when I speak to a person I Stumble  a bit how can I overcome it again that's what  

we'll be talking about in this video but the  basic idea is that you just don't know that  

vocabulary well enough so you we've taken these  little spikes these vocabulary spikes put them  

slightly into your head but it's not very well  in there so you don't really remember you don't  

really feel confident using it and then that's  why you're going to stumble in conversations so  

you should really focus on knowing the vocabulary  better and that just means eliminating any doubt  

that you have about that uh sylvana says nice  uh let's see hi teacher thank you for the class  

it's my pleasure far hi from hello from carala  and Marcel says I understand all when you're  

talking but when I need to speak I usually feel  confused yes so you everybody should be noticing a  

theme in these comments I can understand but I  have trouble speaking and again this this is the  

this is the issue right here so if you if you know  vocabulary a little bit but you don't remember it  

or you don't feel very confident about it it  means you haven't really push that vocabulary  

deep enough into your brain so I recommend you  spend more time doing that all right let me see if  

I go through these pretty quickly here Faron says  100% culinary crafts uh I speak so rushed you mean  

rushed or I Rush maybe when you speak uh so that's  why I made more mistakes how could I talk without  

rushing in English with calm well just slow down I  don't know what what better what better advice to  

give you it's just more you know take a breath  and and wait relax you don't don't need to be  

moving so quickly uh do you provide private  lessons no I do not uh two reasons for that  

the first is it would be way too expensive for  people uh second reason is that it's not really  

advisable I don't really recommend people take  private lessons private lessons are good for  

understanding the language but you really need  lots of examples of natives different natives a  

wide variety this is what I call naturally varied  review so the practice you get for learning it  

has to mirror the way people really speak in the  real world so even if you have a like a personal  

teacher that person can help you understand some  things just like I'm helping you understand things  

here but I'm not you notice I'm speaking with a  clear voice voice it's easier to understand what  

I'm saying uh but it's different from how lots  of people speak and that's why people say well I  

I wish everybody spoke like I do but again I can  I I'm I'm I'm kind of the first step and that's  

why influent for Life what we do is we take  you through this series of steps that helps  

you understand not just me so one clear person  but a wide range of different native speakers  

and some of them have clear accents some of them  do not some of them speak quickly some of them do  

not and so again like the the idea of having like  a a teacher is just one small part of that and  

this is why lots of people do take private lessons  and they pay a lot of money for those uh but still  

have trouble understanding lots of natives in real  situations so you don't need to speak to become  

fluent but you do need to get lots of examples  it's all of that input that helps you understand  

the vocabulary better all right so that's why I  don't offer private lessons so if you're if you'd  

like to learn with me just get fluent for life  it's even better than private lessons because  

it would give you the same training it it would  be the same thing I'm giving you in person uh but  

it also gives you all of these other people that  you're learning with and so it's the whole system  

uh to achieve fluency as quickly as You' like  all right uh Julian says Hi teacher and people  

here greetings from manales Colombia I'm pretty  happy practicing English here glad to hear Amron  

says hello sair says it is hard to change my is  it very hard to change my pronunciation I watch  

American movies and series but I speak like the  way of my country's people uh get Frederick it  

will show you exactly what specific pronunciation  maybe some certain sounds or letters or something  

you might have particular trouble with but  there're probably some things that you can  

pronounce uh like a person from the United States  so if you'd like to if you'd like to sound more  

native that's how you do it you have to focus on  the individual sounds learn all those and then  

start connecting the sounds of things together to  see how natives are actually doing it but this is  

how natives learn pronunciation and it says uh is  improving accent should be a target for people who  

speaks English as a second language um well like  it depends on what your accent is and if it's  

important to you to do that your accent uh is less  important than just pronouncing things correctly  

so I might I might speak I don't know let's say I  speak Spanish and I sound like I like I'm not you  

know native Spanish speaker or whatever but I can  pronounce things pretty well and uh my vocabulary  

is good and my grammar is good those things are  more important than just having a particular  

accent so each person is going to sound a little  bit different uh so like my my pronunciation my  

accent would be different even from my my own  family so they they're going to sound a little  

bit different from me so it depends if your if  your speech is really difficult to understand then  

then yeah that's something you should you should  focus on but uh but it it just depends on on what  

you need I would focus more because I'm seeing  errors in your writing I would focus more on  

just understanding the language better uh and it  said I I got that one already Elizabeth hello from  

Argentina Islam I want you to explain something  strange that happened to me I want you to explain  

something strange that happened to me since I was  a kid watching American movies and some education  

programs and I never studied English before  and now I'm 24 years old and I am able to  

speak fluently and understand grammar but I've  have not studied it uh is that is it a feeling  

that I know right from wrong yeah so basically uh  you you understand even though you don't realize  

it but this is the way everybody gets fluent in  in any language so what's happening is that you  

don't become fluent by speaking you become fluent  by destroying the doubt you have about a language  

and it just it's just another way of saying as you  understand it better if I hear a hundred different  

examples of something I'm probably going to feel  very confident about saying it and not because I  

studied a rule but just because I destroyed the  doubt and so it might come from many examples or  

it might come from a few really good examples  that are uh helping me understand something  

the right way but yes like if from a young age  you're watching American movies and TV shows or  

whatever you will learn the language just like a  native speaker would and that's again giving you  

that sense for what's correct uh and so that's  how you would be uh getting fluent and this and  

this is again the same thing I tell people now so  you don't need to speak in order to do this but  

you do need to get lots of that input the input  is the most important part and making sure that  

input actually destroys the doubts you have about  speaking so if you destroy the doubt then you will  

become a more confident speaker guarantee it's  the same way it happens for everybody it's it's in  

your native language and really learning learning  to do anything we had a uh like a fluent for life  

member recently just mailed me uh or like mailed  us uh was just saying like wow like I really uh  

I really agree with with what you're talking  about is the same thing that happened to me  

as as he was learning other languages learning  to do other things um and so like the idea of  

destroying doubt uh it again that that can just  come from watching TV shows or whatever RF says  

Drew long time no see sair says I'm watching  this live so can you tell the overview of your  

previous video about reading just go go watch that  next I talk about that at the beginning but it's  

it's basically just talking about how to improve  fluency with reading it's about getting input the  

right way but from books rather than TV shows or  whatever thanks for your lessons I've learned a  

lot from you says online lesson glad to hear it  Mo says thank you I like your lessons if there's  

anything stopping you from joining fluent for life  like if you would pay me personally but you would  

not pay for fluent for life let me know why I I  would like to know the the difference there uh  

Stephan says while speaking English I became blank  sometimes and completely stuck is a vocabulary  

issue well it's a vocabulary issue in the sense  that uh you you don't know the vocabulary as  

well as you think you do so you have some kind of  doubt there that's stopping you uh from using the  

vocabulary so that's the problem all right uh you  says I understood the agenda today for instance  

if we learn any vocab we have to make sure that we  understand very well otherwise we may have a doubt  

so probably we won't use it and we got to kill the  doubt first yes uh but I'm just going to show you  

how that works and and how this is uh like it's a  natural process uh if you if you focus on making  

connections and that's why I was telling that  story at the beginning uh about like this the  

woman the like the the woman the woman bartender  uh who was playing the game with us she didn't  

have a lot of resources just like a person who  doesn't have a lot of words but she knew what to  

do with those things and she could she could use  those resources in a good way so you don't need to  

have a lot you don't need to have a thousand games  but you should have you know if you're going to  

play a game you know have at least one game that  you can you can do something very interesting with  

so it's like having a deck of cards if you know  how to play a hundred different games with that  

one deck of cards then that deck of cards is very  valuable for you but if you have a deck of cards  

and you don't you have no idea about games or you  couldn't create a game with it then that deck of  

cards is less valuable so it's the same deck of  cards but to a person who knows how to use it uh  

it becomes much more valuable so that's the idea  about vocabulary but yes you got it Cloud says I  

have another issue I watch TV series and movies  from the USA and Great Britain at the end of the  

day mixed up Accent on each one yeah so if you're  if you're watching a mix of different things you  

know probably focus on one uh and you need to  hear again how different natives from different  

places would be saying things that's why we do  that influent for Life uh our phrasal you mean  

phrasal verbs important in know them to become  more fluent uh well phrasal verbs are certainly  

good for uh being able to express yourself well  with a smaller vocabulary uh and to understand  

natives but I mean you don't think about fluency  as being part of specific vocabulary fluent just  

means how well you're able to use something and  so if you have no doubt about using that then you  

should be able to use it fluently but I can use  a word or an expression or a phrase or phrasal  

verb or slang or whatever it doesn't really matter  what that thing is if I can use it well then I'm  

fluent in that thing uh let's see here s says  do people get fluent in a particular topic uh  

you can and that's actually what I recommend  people do so you you basically become fluent  

as you know something better kind of pushing that  Spike further into your head hello from Haiti says  

gine Valentino follow from Colombia said bro can  I improve my English by listening just listening  

using comprehensible input material uh as I often  explain this it's not about just listening the  

point is to understand the vocabulary so I could  listen to lots of things and still not become more  

fluent if I don't understand what I'm listening to  so I need to be listening strategically listening  

uh but I mean for me like actually learning a  language I don't I don't want to only listen the  

point is I'm uh watching things or I'm touching  things or even tasting things to learn the flavors  

of them rather than just like like getting like  comprehensible input is kind of the it's like  

kind of telling you what to do but the destination  is to to use comprehensible input strategically to  

eliminate any doubt you have about understanding  something and so that's the key so it's not about  

like just listening but maybe I I taste something  and I understand what a flavor is and that's much  

better than listening to someone talk about it  all right so yes like the point is input rather  

than out output uh and output becomes the goal  of all the input so after you feel confident that  

you understand something without a doubt then  you speak that's how it works so you can try to  

do the opposite you can try to speak but it's  not really going to help you improve very much  

because you're just saying things that you already  know and you're not really learning more and as  

you learn more that's where you actually remove  doubt and feel more confident about expressing  

things so it's not about uh specific vocabulary  that you need to know um or or like a particular  

way of learning the point is however you remove  doubt that's what you need to do all right see uh  

what if you're doubt when you're in the middle of  a conversation or debate well I mean in that case  

if you if you like don't remember something then  you you just didn't know the word well enough to  

begin with but you could easily ask someone else  in the conversation or I can or or what I usually  

recommend people do is just say something else  so if I forget something in the moment if I'm  

if I'm really learning well and making lots  of connections then I can easily switch from  

one way of expressing something to saying it in a  different way so this happens to me in Japanese if  

I'm talking with someone and I'm like I wonder if  that's the best way to say something I just switch  

and express it a different way so there are many  ways like really an infinite number uh in the way  

we speak but usually when people are learning a  second language the typical thing is here's a word  

in your native language here's the translation  in English and if you forget that thing then  

you have trouble speaking but when you're actually  destroying doubt by understanding the language the  

same way a native does you learn there are many  different ways of expressing something and so uh  

typically if you're if you're forgetting something  in a conversation uh you can either ask like to  

talk about that like oh I'm trying to remember  this word what's the word for for this and I you  

know I'm like expressing like my like inability  to remember it so I can I can actually exchange  

I don't know I can change the conversation from  whatever we're we're talking about to like the  

word I forgot so I can now change the conversation  and do that or I can just say something different  

and and go around that thing so if I if I forget  how to say hello I can say hi that's a basic  

example all right uh P says hi I'm okay speaking  English but can't write English because I don't  

attend I didn't attend primary school I'm from  UK can you please suggest some tools to improve  

writing skills and spelling uh get Frederick  for that first of all so click on the link in  

the description below this video to get that um  that will improve your spelling for sure um but  

I would just actually write things down so with  a like a pencil and paper so I have to do the  

same thing with Japanese so my spoken Japanese  is much better than my writing and so I have  

to you know I didn't go to Japanese elementary  school either so I have to take time time to go  

back and do that but if I physically write things  down not on a computer but actually by hand write  

them down with a pen or a pencil then you will uh  then you will understand them better and you will  

become a better writer so get lots of examples  of that and that will help you LS says sir

hler I don't know what that I understand some  of that but all right Tom nice to see you there  

Moses I can speak normally for easy topics but  when I try to make sentences more difficult I'm  

stuck yes uh and so generally like I would I would  get more examples of people making more difficult  

sentences that's how you do it so anything you  have a doubt about doing that's when you would  

you would get more um like get more examples  from from people who are giving that kind of  

English so if I if I let's say uh let's say I  don't know how to talk about I don't know any  

particular I can't talk about dinosaurs in in  German so I don't know how to do that so if I  

watch a bunch of people talking about dinosaurs in  German I would I would be able to do that after a  

while so if I can understand if I remove the doubt  then I would be able to have conversations about  

dinosaurs in German all right leou says a and  then the thinking and the glasses and English  

okay gotch you all right uh lock and Beck says sir  is it okay to keep the fluency keep the fluency  

through making mistakes in grammar and vocabulary  usage while speaking well I mean I could I could  

speak fluent nonsense I could just say blah you  know I could just continue to speak but that's not  

like when people think about fluency they they  typically mean like using something correctly  

without worrying about it or thinking about  translations or something like that uh and so  

I'm just looking at Leonardo back with knowledge  Leonardo has too much knowledge you never you  

never share any specific knowledge though it's  just knowledge generally but yes uh that that's  

the basic idea so like if you if you're if you  just want to keep speaking even though you're not  

speaking correctly you can certainly do that but  most of the people I help they actually want to  

speak fluent English correctly so they want to be  able to express themselves without worrying about  

making mistakes that kind of thing uh let's  see Mo says I need private lessons because I  

need that someone corrects the mistakes I make  now this is interesting Mo because we just had  

somebody above that was talking about how learned  English from watching TV shows and and uh movies  

and things like that and so in that case the  actual correction comes from seeing correct  

examples all right I really want to make that  clear for everybody because there's always like  

well I need somebody right there uh to correct  my mistakes when I make them when it's actually  

better if you just watch other people speaking  and you speak because they they spoke you like  

they say something and you say oh that's  that's how you say that and so after you get  

like many examples of something then you feel  confident that you would use it the same way so  

yes like in a uh in a conversation you might try  to use something new and make a mistake doing that  

but you know that's people make mistakes it's  going to happen sometimes but it's much better  

if you're if you're going to be talking about  something watch other people talking about it  

first so how do people like if I'm in Japan I I  first came to Japan I don't know 20 years ago and  

when I see people when they're like surprised what  do they say so if I watch just one person uh you  

know one person says like like big goody big goody  Stu like they're like oh I'm I'm surprised about  

something and I see another person a you know  like a lot of people say the same thing then  

I'm getting the idea oh okay that's probably the  thing to say when I'm surprised or or like if I  

like bump in is something I'm like a you go like I  I like I know how to say that because I know what  

other people say I've seen many examples of that  like if I if I walk around and and am kind of like  

in people's way and they're kind of like like I  need to get around you like they will say like ah  

see my so Japanese people like you watch like what  they do what they say like you will get the hand  

up typically like this a little bit of like a bow  as they're trying to get around you it's like ah  

so you must say you know like and and so you get  the whole picture of that by seeing many examples  

of how people do things so the point is not for me  to try something and then make a mistake and then  

get corrected it's just let me watch what other  people are doing and I can learn from what they  

already know and so if I watch native examples  I'm going to learn how natives really do things  

now the the problem is that often when people are  even if they look for a like a personal teacher  

that personal teacher is going to give you uh like  a very clear and you know maybe I don't know like  

it wouldn't be incorrect but it it would it would  make you think that there's a very specific way  

you need to say something so that's why I'm always  telling people getting one example it's going to  

be really difficult for you you don't really  know very much you're not going to eliminate a  

lot of Doubt especially if that one example is  a clear easy to understand slow teacher so if  

you're getting one example from someone they just  say oh uh how how do I say whatever and they give  

me an example of that I'm going to I'm going to  think like uh like this is how you should do it  

I made a video about this a long well actually I  don't remember how made how how long ago I made it  

but it was about imprinting so there there's an  idea where like a baby bird is born and that or  

you know comes out of the shell like a baby chick  and baby chick comes out of the shell and it looks  

you know and the first adult it sees it imprints  on that person or I guess that chicken in that  

case the baby bird the baby chick looks at the  you know whoever it's probably the mother chick  

or the mother the mother the mother uh hen or the  mother chicken and the baby is is now imprinted  

or kind of the mother is imprinted on the baby and  so this happens when people are learning languages  

the student gets imprinted on from from the uh  from the teacher and so they think like oh this  

one way the teacher said it is the correct way  and so now when I go into the real world and try  

to say that thing I'm going to try to sound and  speak exactly like my teacher but natives don't  

do that what natives are doing they're actually  getting lots of different examples from many  

different people and so they're not imprinted from  just one person it's all these different people  

that create that natural way of speaking because  they've seen lots of different people uh they hear  

all these different accents the pronunciation is  a little bit different the vocabulary might be a  

little bit different so like in the uh in the  uh in the example I gave yesterday uh with or  

not yesterday but in the last video about reading  so I talk about when I'm reading uh for learning  

Japanese I'm I'm really taking my time I want to  push this Spike deep down into my brain with many  

different examples and so part of that is taking  stories like the three little pigs that would have  

you know it would be pretty popular prettyy  common so I can get lots of different examples  

and compare those and so if I look at like the  like the English version is like you know little  

pig little pig let me in and the that so the wolf  says little pig little pig let me in and then like  

the the Japanese version is going to be a little  bit different and each Japanese version is also  

a little bit different they are different from  each other so what was one of them it was like uh  

it was like K or whatever it was like like let me  like let me in uh but it was like uh what was that  

one it was like or something like that it was like  but basically it was it was a different example uh  

of of the same idea of like letting me in and so  if I'm listening to those like I would read that  

I would get examples of different people uh like  saying those things to me I would hear the stories  

in different ways and that would make me feel much  more confident so now I can hear hear it I know  

what they're saying and like I could tell you know  the story of The Three Little Pigs but again like  

it's not there's not only one version of it it's  just there are different ways of expressing that  

same thing and so if you hear one clear teacher or  one example that that imprints on you and that's  

really making you think wow okay this is the way  I have to say it uh and so you should always be  

getting multiple examples that's why uh like a  course taught by one teacher is less valuable  

uh even if that teacher gives good examples  it's less valuable than one teacher plus lots  

of different Native examples all right and did  I skip those let's see I think okay R let's see  

what if I keep making mistakes without realizing  them while talking with people in English could  

this be a big problem and how to deal with it  uh if well if you don't realize you're making  

mistakes then you're probably not spending enough  time listening to native speakers so if you do all  

the speaking and you're not watching material  that helps you learn English that usually when  

like I'll I I might say something in Japanese and  then hear like somebody use uh like the correct  

way of speaking and then I think oh I've actually  been saying that incorrectly so I should I should  

stop stop doing that and so like if that's why  I spend more time listening and get and not just  

listening but you know watching things or reading  things I'm getting examples of what's correct and  

that's correcting my Japanese before I speak  so if you're making mistakes in conversations  

and you don't realize it and nobody is telling  you about those mistakes then you you probably  

should spend more time watching native English  or listening to it or whatever Carla says if I  

listen to your lives every day am I improving my  speaking and listening yes you are and and I I  

make my live videos specifically so I'm talking  about a lot of the same topics but I explain  

them in different ways so I tell tell different  stories I give you different vocabulary like you  

would actually improve your your fluency just by  listening to me uh but I I recommend whether you  

learn with me or not you should also be listening  to lots of other natives talking about things okay  

so again this is why we design fluent for life to  make sure people get all these different examples  

so I I I can say I'm a great teacher but it's  not enough so you will listen to me and think  

wow Drew's pronunciation is really good uh I  want to sound like he does but other people  

do not speak like me and even when I'm talking  with you know friends I might speak differently  

I might use a different vocabulary whatever so  the point is that you should be always uh getting  

it's it's it's like the like the confirmation of  seeing many different examples will give you the  

confidence to speak all right if I'm if I'm saying  that correctly like seeing one example from one  

person is useful so a a single teacher even me  explaining something to you that's useful but  

it's not so memorable you know you really should  get more examples and you really should hear how  

other people are talking about the same thing so  don't just listen to me uh Julian says the real  

problem isn't speaking English but understanding  when someone speaks to me in English speaking  

is a consequence of understanding yes and so we  often talk about this on the channel where like if  

you have doubt about something and that could be  doubt about understanding it could be doubt about  

speaking whatever that is but as you remove those  doubts you become more confident about listening  

so being in conversations and understanding  people but also about expressing yourself uh  

let's see do you still make mistakes in your  second language teacher or you speak perfectly  

no I'm sure I make I make mistakes in Japanese and  that's why again I I I still like there might be  

things where I'm thinking about something and I'll  even talk with Japanese people I'm like why do you  

say this so as an example like uh typically in  Japanese when you have like a like a living thing  

like uh like a rabbit or a person or a giraffe  or something like that a fish you would say like  

like sakayu like there is there is a fish so  you would use like the uh the Japanese like to  

exist verb is basically this for living things  but if you're talking about like like a marker  

it's like maku and so when I I was talking  with people I was like well what about a ghost  

is it like IDU or Adu and these are the kinds of  questions that people have when they're learning  

languages just like me people ask me questions  uh about English and so it's it's interesting  

to hear those because I might say like ah  like like like is it is a ghost like is it  

is it like IDU or Adu because it's not alive but  it's still moving around you know something like  

that so they're interesting things like that  you think about and I might say something uh  

and it's usually because of my understanding  so if I have a a doubt about something I might  

make a mistake about that but if I do have a  doubt I will probably try to ask somebody uh  

like ask somebody I know or chat gbt or try  to get some examples somewhere all right but  

that's that's basically the idea so yes I I  definitely uh make mistakes but I learn very  

quickly because I'm paying attention to what other  people are doing I'm always looking for uh other  

you know connections that's what we're talking  about in this video let's see where did we go  

all right T says sir I Love Your Way of teaching  thank you for the lessons I brought your fluency  

guide and so far loved what I watched I wish I  came across this kind of approaches very early  

in my language uh learning let's see oh that's  the end of that um well yeah we're we're happy  

to help and yeah I know maybe it's always  better to have stuff 20 years ago but the  

second best time is now as we say so the second  best time to start learning correctly is now  

so whenever you find us uh I'm glad it helped  but now use that knowledge and and uh share  

that with other people just say hey you find some  young people say hey you should you should start  

learning like this start destroying the doubt and  that will make you a much more confident speaker  

so don't let other people wait for 20 years or  whatever to start learning uh renisance says hello  

from Brazil and see again learn English directly  from native resources but sometimes it's hard  

following a native sense of humor such as a meme  slang or medium yet yes so that's a a much higher  

level more difficult to do that and Leonardo back  with knowledge let's see uh what do you do if you  

are afraid to make a mistake and dare not speak  well that's again like when when I was starting  

to get fluent or trying trying to learn Japanese  uh the the problem was well I had many problems  

uh but the biggest one was that I thought I had to  speak to become fluent but I discovered that it's  

actually my ability to understand the language  and my if I have no doubt that's what actually  

allowed me to speak so uh when people worry about  speaking then you don't really have to speak  

that's the best advice I can give you so that's  don't worry about speaking spend more of your  

time just understanding the language and clearing  up any doubt you have about grammar or vocabulary  

or pronunciation or whatever and that will get  you fluent automatically all right so don't worry  

about uh trying to speak it's not it's like it's  not actually a problem that will stop you so you  

don't you don't have to speak to get fluent to  spend your time really understanding the language  

again like whether you learn with me or not this  is the way you're going to get fluent you just  

have to eliminate the doubt that stops you from  speaking so any any worries you have that's that's  

coming from a specific place so if I'm worried  about using a grammar point then I will probably  

say something different so if I'm like I don't  know how to say something oh let me express it in  

a different way if I know how to do that but some  people don't even know how to to express things in  

various ways uh but that's what we talk about on  this channel and influent for life okay you guys  

are really putting a lot of comments in here I'm  trying I didn't even really give some uh examples  

yet but hopefully we'll get to those all right  sair says to get fluent is your chat gbt command  

enough uh Chad that Chad TBT again like that  command I gave you is a good starting point and  

will teach you a lot but the difference between  a computer telling you text you know it's like  

literally physical text you can read uh you could  also hear chat GPT say things to you if if you'd  

like to do that um but you still need lots of  native examples it's the variety that really gets  

you fluent all right AB says Thinking by English  how do I do that if I'm not born there well you  

don't have to be born anywhere like how do I learn  to think in Japanese I learn to think in Japanese  

by watching Japanese people talking about things  so I'm not when I when I I gave you the example

before if I have uh like it's it's kind of  what do I unconsciously do about a about a  

particular situation uh like I gave the one about  being surprised so I I've seen like I don't know  

thousands of examples of Japanese people surprised  about stuff you know on TV in real life and I like  

they almost always say like you know like you know  they say something but typically like beisha or  

something like that which is just like you know  I was surprised or startled by something and uh  

it's the same thing with other Expressions but  you learn longer ways of saying things like I  

gave the uh like the like the English example  for like a fairy tale like an an old story is  

like a long time ago uh there was something like a  long time there was a princess or once upon a time  

there was a princess so you learn this pattern  for how people describe things and it's not it's  

not like always the exact same way but you learn  a few examples and you understand how those work  

so in Japanese it's like mukashi mukashi you  know something happened like so long ago it's  

same basic idea but because I'm seeing those  different examples I feel much more confident  

uh about saying those things so you you'll  notice I'm I'm giving it's basically the same  

answer to all of these questions which is if  you feel doubt about something you're not going  

to use it so you should be spending more of your  time destroying the doubt all right so that that  

goes for everything uh it's like you know how to  uh like remember words or to feel more confident  

about whatever you should feel more uh confident  about the vocabulary and I I'll it's better if  

I just give you some examples which I will do in  a moment if I can get through all these comments  

all right let's see uh okay so so again like The  Thinking by English thing it's a it's a natural  

thing that happens as you start like experiencing  the language the same way a native does so if I  

hear a thousand people do something like if I  like if you if you watch a bunch of Japanese  

people on TV or in person you give them  some food and they try it and they say oi

[Music] so if I hear all these different examples  I'm going to think oh like oi is probably a way  

of saying delicious or tasty all right but  if someone say ma then it's like Mau is like  

okay I'm getting I'm getting the picture I'm  starting to see how that works so if someone  

just gives me a translation I'm less likely  to understand that thing because it's just  

not very memorable but if I discover that just  like I gave you the example right there like I

you probably you probably starting to get the  

idea like okay uh he probably means  like it's tasty or it's delicious or

whatever y okay so like if I try something like if  it's if it's like I don't really you can see from  

my expression you see from the situation and you  learn the vocabulary that way and so my brain is  

naturally learning to think as I'm getting these  examples but the point is I'm not just hearing  

it from one person I'm seeing in life as lots of  different people are giving me these examples and  

those examples give me confirmation that that  is the correct way of speaking if I only hear  

one example from a teacher or whatever like I'm  going to I'm going to imprint on that and think  

like this is how you do something but actually  they're you know lots of different ways I could I  

could say something and so uh that that variety of  learning is uh is is what you should be focusing  

on uh let's see if I got that one already let's  see seir says FYI you use the typically word often  

yes typically I do very good very good let's see  a AA says I'm from Kyan and thank you very much  

yeah it's a good example with uh imprinting glad  to hear all right Mohammad says hello sir what's  

the difference ex uh difference between V1 and in  exactly I get confused when I'm trying to explain  

that exactly native someone asks wait are you  looking for a grant of like a a grammatical  

explanation of like a linguistic explanation of  how it works or you're looking for examples of  

those because you should just search my channel  where I I've covered those things already all  

right what uh what to do if you have two little  vocabul uh it's it's probably not an issue for  

most of the people watching my channel so if you  can write that sentence unless you translated that  

um but most people who can understand what  I'm saying they already know enough words  

uh the problem is they don't know them well  enough and they don't feel confident about  

that vocabulary that's why they don't use that  vocabulary very well so that's the real problem  

uh but uh typically if if I needed to learn about  something and and I that happens all the time and  

real life so an example I've given in Japanese is  when my wife was pregnant with our first child so  

my older daughter Arya I I didn't know anything  about like women's clinic you know vocabulary I  

don't even know a lot about that in English either  but like I had to learn it in Japanese and I just  

spend time with that I'm listening to the doctors  and different people say things or if I'm learning  

about you know t and stuff in Japan like you know  you you get these different examples and it's that  

variety that really helps you understand things uh  but if you're looking for uh like you can you can  

focus on that and you can create that experience  if you'd like to learn more about a particular  

thing so this is how we organize uh fluent for  life so it's organized by topic and you can learn  

about a specific grammar point or a specific  kind of vocabulary or a specific kind of native  

speaker like someone from Australia or the UK or  America or wherever Melly says hi I'm from South  

Korea welcome hello South Korea and Alberto says  Could you teach us the Lord's Prayer well you can  

just Google that you don't need me to teach you  that let's see Prana says today it's raining uh  

you would say it's a rainy day that's why I'm late  I love the way you teach English glad to hear it

destroy doubt that's it so what what to do if you  can't remember words again that's that goes back  

to the way people learn so you're probably  not spending enough time with vocabulary to

what's left of it you know and it's it's like  it's on my it's on my my backside now it kind of

rare moment well I had to try to do these at  least once a week Elder says how's it going  

Drew nice to hear this morning knowledge yes more  people enjoy the knowledge and Drew the Destroyer  

says you all right let me give you some examples  uh about how this works with learning vocabulary  

uh and since we had that example I'm just thinking  about this now I'll draw my head as as I'll draw  

it kind of looks like me with with a little hair  uh so here's an eye and we had this idea about  

like a spike going into your head I think that's  a valuable way to think about this so the more  

hits on the spike the further the spike goes into  the ground or the the further the spike goes into  

your head and that's how you should be thinking  about vocabulary so the example we had before was  

what what is the difference uh between a nail uh  a nail and a spike and I explain that basic idea  

a nail has kind of this flat head but we're just  trying to get this little kind of pole uh this  

short thing down into something else like another  piece of wood but a spike is like typically a  

larger thing and we want this thing this the spike  is often uh kind of like holding something else so  

it's it's a different shape it's more like a cone  kind of thing it doesn't need to look like that I  

mean you could have a like a a spike kind of like  this so you have something that goes into the  

ground but it's typically some kind of you know  like a grade like this so it goes from thick to  

thin a spike so this one like a tent Spike uh you  put the loop around this and then that that goes  

on the tent to hold it down uh so when you're  thinking about learning vocabulary like here  

here's an interesting uh basic expression here to  hit on my markers see red is working to hit the

nail on the head to hit the nail on the head so  this is a common you can call it an idium but it's  

just basically a phrase where it's pretty easy to  understand so this is the head of the nail up here  

this is I don't I don't actually know if this  is called the body of the nail or or maybe even  

people would call that like the spike of it but  this is the head of the nail and the reason the  

nail is designed like this is so it gives you a  big area to hit with a hammer all right so if I  

have just like this tiny this just tiny stick here  it's a bit more difficult to do that but usually  

we have some kind of flat part on Top that makes  it easier for me to hit something so here I'm  

giving you a basic explanation and this is all in  English I'm not trying to give you translations or  

anything that would make it more difficult to  understand but we're we're bringing this back  

and you notice I I continue to use these words  like nail and Spike I want to repeat that but in  

slightly different ways okay and so if we have uh  a nail like this I want to hit something right on  

the head so what happens sometimes when people are  nailing they don't hit the nail on the head like  

maybe they hit it kind of on the edge of it and  it bends the nail so some people get a nail kind  

of looks like this like oh no they they didn't hit  it straight it didn't go down they bent the nail  

or maybe they hit it on the side or something like  that but they didn't actually like hit something  

correctly so when you hit something on the head  in this example here this is a physical example  

you can see if I have a hammer I'm going to hit  the nail on the head it means bam I hit it right  

there in the middle it's a good strike on the  nail so I'm hitting the nail and then it goes  

in very easily so just like I have a nail in my  hand we can imagine this is a nail if I'm kind of  

hitting it like from the side here it's not going  to go in very well but if I hit the nail on the  

head look at that d d d it goes right in okay  so to hit the nail on the head now if I stopped  

right there you would probably understand okay to  hit the nail on the head but we continue because  

I want to hit that Spike this idea of hitting  the nail on the head I want to put that further  

down into your brain so you really remember it  and you understand when you can use it in other  

contexts all right so once we understand uh just  this physical idea here like to hit so again LS  

says to hit the bullseye same kind of thing  so this is another way of saying to hit the  

bullseye or to hit the nail on the head hit the  nail on the head and so if I hit the nail on the  

head when else might I hit the nail on the head  all right you can think about that as like it's  

not about Nails it's about really doing something  well doing something accurately doing something  

just right and I could do that in a lot of ways  I could be like giving a really good explanation  

like oo that explanation hits the nail on the head  so I did something perfectly I explained something  

well uh or I could be like giving a presentation  at work and you know it did a very good job and  

someone was really like oh wow I really understand  that thing like that presentation really hit the  

nail on the head this is just one way of talking  about something where okay we have a physical  

example where we're not talking about Nails  obviously we're talking about something else  

like giving a presentation or doing something else  or whatever uh and that's you know the same basic  

idea all right so as we're learning things I'm  trying to give you more examples that push the  

spike deeper into your brain and then if you hear  further more examples of like a different person  

using it or in another context then you really  feel oh that spike is going deeper and deeper  

into your head which makes it more memorable it  deletes any doubt that you have about using that  

so you feel more confident using it all right so  a longer thing like this like maybe you you know  

you might have to take a minute to remember it or  something like to feel confident using it but if  

you keep getting more and more examples you will  feel very confident about that it's the same thing  

as like mukashi mukashi Aron like in Japanese  like long time ago or once upon a time once  

upon a time if you hear that enough enough then  you really start to anticipate when other people  

are going to use it so I know what other people  are going to say like I know if somebody bumps  

into me they're going to say ah see my S like  basically everybody is going to say that I know  

they're going to say that thing uh and and that's  usually what they do typically all right so again  

we're looking for things like when we're learning  something you notice we want to spend more time to  

really understand something but uh it it becomes  much more useful when you actually spend the time  

focusing on something okay so now we have a phrase  that can describe any situation where something is  

is going well or you did it very well or whatever  like wow you really hit the nail on the head with  

that talk okay I'll give you one more example same  kind of thing nice physical example uh I actually  

happen to have a towel with me today uh so since  I'll I'll just use this expression uh this nail I  

came from who was that I forget who who mentioned  that uh but now we have our towel here so another  

quick expression I can give you here is to  throw in the towel to throw in the towel to  

throw in the towel now it sounds like a kind of  weird thing like what is that like throw a towel  

what are you talking about throwing a towel now  if you don't know what this means I'll give you  

the basic idea if you imagine here is a a boxing  ring so here's a the boxing ring over here and  

usually you have two boxers on the inside or two  people fighting something like that and you have  

the the managers or the trainers on the outside  over here and they are cheering they say go go  

you know like we want to want to make sure that  other person is uh continuing to fight but if you  

have to quit they will actually take a towel and  throw it in to the ring now this is an interesting  

thing too it's a box but people call it a ring  like it could be an actual physical Circle but uh  

this kind of box area people call this a boxing  ring a boxing ring anyway so if we have a towel  

like my my person is is being uh they're they're  they're losing and I think well it's better to  

just quit I'm going to throw the towel into the  ring and I quit so this becomes an expression  

where we can use that anytime we're going to stop  doing something all right right so I'm going to  

quit doing something I was going to college and  it was just too difficult for me I I couldn't take  

the classes so I threw in the towel I threw in  the towel so I was doing something uh like I was  

at this job I didn't really like it very much so I  threw in the towel I threw in the towel now I can  

say I quit but again if you know this like you're  speaking the language of native speakers who will  

talk in more interesting vocabulary if they know  that but most people know this expression to throw  

in the towel so I could tell someone else you know  you don't have to continue doing that thing if you  

don't like it it's okay to throw in the towel all  right so I mean taking a towel like a physical  

towel it comes from that idea from putting this  in like the manager throws the towel into the  

ring to say hey it's like waving a white flag  uh for for like please don't shoot me anymore  

I give up I surrender all right same idea throw  in the towel okay so you see when we spend more  

time with vocabulary like I could learn a word  like towel and just learn that okay like what's  

the Japanese word for towel and then what's the  English word for towel and then maybe I remember  

that but if I spend a bit more time trying to make  more connections that's what actually pushes the  

vocabulary deeper into my head and it really makes  me understand that vocabulary well so I remember  

it I feel confident about using it because I have  no doubt and I understand okay now I will say that  

thing so the vocabulary learning comes first don't  worry about expressing a lot of things or saying  

a lot of things before you feel confident the  point is really to understand things well and  

to understand them well enough that you have no  doubt and then you speak okay all right let me go  

back check chat make sure people are uh getting  this over here hopefully nobody is uh throwing  

in the towel all all right let's see Drew uh James  Butler says hi sir do you think Family Guy is the  

best way to learn English I don't know about the  best way but it's certainly a way I would get many  

examples of that but it's it's also nice if you  enjoy something if you like watching Family Guy  

then enjoy that show and you'll learn a lot of  English from it you know it's it's a good thing  

to do so if you it's hard to to do something you  don't like and and try to learn from that like if  

it's too difficult for you or you don't like  the content whatever you don't like the topic or  

something um I will say though that like something  like this if I if I were to explain this okay like  

let's say I have a classroom full of women uh  and I say hey uh I'm going to teach you a bunch  

of boxing Expressions at first they might think  well wait a minute I don't care about boxing maybe  

some of them do but maybe some of them don't and  I would just say well the important thing here is  

to understand where the vocabulary comes from uh  so if we talk about someone getting like knocked  

out then you could you could use that in the same  way when talking about things that are nothing to  

do with uh boxing so like the the idea is that  the we want to make sure people understand the  

things very well so when you're learning uh  I recommend even if it's a different thing or  

something that you might not like give it a try  first and maybe you don't care about boxing but  

you will be using that vocabulary uh to  try to try do something like learning  

something different so you can often make these  connections and that will help you understand  

something better all right it's about making  connections which gives you the understanding uh

right Cloud says I have the same experience in  English if I figure out what is the word meaning  

I remember this word much better yes and this is  why it's a good idea for teachers not to just give  

you a translation giving you a translation  can actually hurt your ability to remember  

things because we remember more what we discover  ourselves so if we say oh like I had an idea that  

something something whenever you come up with your  own idea like that's a much more memorable idea  

than you getting even the same idea from somebody  else because you remember where you were and how  

you felt and uh lots of good things about that  but teachers often make it worse by simply giving  

you a translation all right Katy says I understand  95% of the time but when I get nervous I get lost  

easily what should I do well you have to feel  better about the vocabulary then you won't feel  

nervous because you you have to think about what  is the reason for the nervousness if you think  

well actually I'm nervous because I don't know the  vocabulary very well then that is your answer you  

got to spend more time with the vocabulary but  if you're like well I'm nervous because I've got  

something on my face or whatever you know some  like whatever some some something like that uh  

which is like a different a different problem but  if you look at the actual root of the problem then  

focus on that and it's usually some kind of doubt  uh and it says thank you drew you're doing a good  

job uh you can tell you're passionate about it  thank you for that yep well I'm I'm learning a  

language also so I I know I know what the problems  are and I I mean it would be nice to to I I spend  

a lot of time like hours and hours like even  trying to think about the best way to explain this  

because it's a it's a tricky problem and many  people have been learning languages or like  

trying to learn English in my case for a long time  uh and so if I say hey you can actually get fluent  

much faster people just don't believe me so I have  to think like what is a believable way to explain  

something uh and and help people actually you  know actually get the get the vocabulary or the  

fluency they're looking for uh let's see Patrice  says for someone who understands all things you  

talk in your speech do you consider this person  as advanced level well maybe for for listening  

I'd say you're at least intermediate if you can  understand everything I'm saying but I'm speaking  

clearly a little bit more slowly and it's again  it's different from how natives would be really  

speaking this is kind of the first step to getting  up to that native level uh hi teacher can I ask  

well you can just ask a question you don't need  to ask if you can ask a question uh Su says I  

gotcha H the Bulls long time ago was it mukashi in  Japanese yes so that that's how you would say that  

sometimes you will hear mukashi or you will hear  like mukashi mukashi like it's like a really long  

time ago but yeah it's just like long ago uh yes  Louis has it give up and MD says hi sir I'm from  

Bangladesh I like your teaching way glad to hear  it uh C says good morning teacher I am from India  

the way you teach is quite different from others  keep it up let me know what you mean by that so  

it's interesting to see that comment I get that  comment a lot like I like the way you teach or  

it's different or whatever but explain why if you  can it's hard to do Abus says like you see someone  

much time and then uh we will friend like the  words and you listening uh to them a lot they will  

into your brain yes so the point is to become very  familiar with the vocabulary if you hear something  

one time you're probably not going to remember it  well or feel confident uh confident about using it  

but if you hear lots of things like uh then you  will feel better so I'm throwing in the towel  

with this learning English yes very good usage of  that so you can just say I'm throwing in the towel  

with learning English or whatever but very good  let's see Zen am from let's see knowledge Hub good  

morning sir what is your first language my first  language is English Le says good morning have a  

good day hm a lot of idioms you are teaching are  the same in other languages and use in the same  

context so no English speaking people can grasp or  non-english speaking people can grasp these idioms  

easily yes so like you'll also get that and I'm  trying to teach these things from the context so  

it's the same thing like in Japanese we say like  isino like one one stone two birds but in English  

it's hit two birds with one stone it's same idea  uh but again like a lot of those things that's  

just the The Human Experience you know uh but you  actually can understand the way people make those  

things and it's it's much easier to remember  them when you discover them like that rather  

than me just telling you here's a translation of  something that's why I might I might write the  

word or phrase down but I want to tell you some  kind of story or give you an example that helps  

you really understand it well uh from India I am  your big fan well welcome if you know other people  

who would enjoy these videos then please share  them truth Seer says I'm very good at Listening  

to English you would say Listening to English but  it's very difficult for me to speak in English  

that just means you don't know the vocabulary well  enough all right I've covered this many times but  

that's the that's really the core issue for a  lot of people they know English well enough to  

understand but speaking is a different thing and  it just means you still have some kind of doubt  

and you need to clear that doubt remove that doubt  that will help you uh actually unlock your ability

your daily day as teachers do you use any software  such as tell me more or Rosetta Stone uh no this  

is it I am the software I mean we we we don't I  mean as as far as like me like teaching this is  

the this is the teaching I I do it's just helping  people understand the language and uh like I built  

software already to help people teach themselves  so part of that is Frederick so if you click on  

the link in the description below this video you  will learn more about that but that's the first  

app that anyone in the world can use to teach  themselves English all in English um so you can  

learn vocabulary and pronunciation and grammar  all that you will learn it step by step uh it's  

just one way of doing that but that's as far as  like software or whatever I don't use any other  

kind of teaching programs or anything like that  honestly I would I would like to not have to make  

stuff but uh everything else it's already made  I have not found anything that teaches the way  

I do um so if you know of anything let me know  but what I've seen from Rosetta Stone or uh dual  

lingo or whatever like it's not it's not letting  you uh get enough examples of things and helping  

you understand it the same way a native would so  I mean the biggest problem is the lack of variety  

with it so if I get from a from an app it's it's  just telling me something nice and clearly I can  

see it written down there it's very different  from the way uh the way natives actually speak  

so I need to see those native EX examples if I'm  trying to learn a language and be prepared for  

real communication all right let's see and it says  the way you pass your knowledge there's that word  

knowledge again knowledge tus you give lots of  examples answer all the questions do it in a fun  

and funny way glad hear it's great to listen to  you all right well I'm glad that's helpful then  

I'll try to be uh try to be funnier then let's see  and then says if I'm pronouncing that correctly  

I have a little bit of trouble with speaking but  I'm trying to make sure I can speak English more  

confidently and sometimes I forget how to write it  when I can speak so again like notice everybody's  

comment is basically saying the same thing they  have some kind of doubt about whatever but uh I'm  

encouraging you reminding you explaining to you  uh that you should think a bit more about that  

so for me uh I I will try to be as specific  as I can if I have an issue with Japanese so  

I would not say my Japanese pronunciation is bad  that's not very helpful I need to think like what  

specifically like is this sound okay or is that  sound okay this sound is not okay so that's the  

real problem so I should be thinking like that  with uh pronunciation or vocabulary or grammar  

whatever the issue is but if I'm thinking about  that and I know what the problem uh then I would  

be able to find that more easily uh let's see say  do you like boxing teacher it is so interesting  

skip punches and get Punch Yeah I've never never  tried boxing before for I I've I've hit a like a  

heavy bag and a uh what do you call it like speed  bag that little one uh but I've never never I've  

never like been in a in a like a boxing fight to I  don't want to hurt anybody I see Katie says thank  

you and roll is drink some water teacher yes I've  got my bottle over here but we're basically done  

with the video anyway and then I can enjoy my  look at that my 2 L massive bottle I'll get it

drink ah all right well just a quick recap at the  end of the video the basic idea is that the more  

connections you make with vocabulary the more  memorable it becomes okay so that's why I'm I'm  

trying to show you something but then show you  how it's used in other contexts as well which  

will make you feel more confident about it at  the beginning of this video I just gave a quick  

uh story about how I went to a bar or went to two  different bars with a Japanese friend of mine one  

bar this guy had lots of bottles he had maybe like  a thousand different bottles of alcohol around  

the bar boxes of things and crates and I mean it  really look like an interesting place to tell a  

story about lots of different things but when we  said what alcohol do you like he just said well  

I like all of them you know and that's the end  of the story all right so if you're trying to  

have better communication you don't need to have  more things to talk about out but you should be  

better at speaking that the things that you do  know all right and typically like I could make  

up a conversation about whatever uh like I'm I  can talk with so I I was at a baseball game a  

Japanese uh baseball game here last week and I was  just sitting and talking with this lady next to me  

she was uh she and her husband were there from uh  fulka uh and so that's just another another city  

here but I was talking with them about parking and  grocery stores and stuff that was you know just  

things that are different between the two cities  but you know we had a good conversation and you  

know like I I don't need to like use a lot of  complicated vocabulary to have a good conversation  

with people but I do know how to speak well  uh and I can control the conversation and talk  

about things I'm interested in or interested  in uh or find things that are you know like  

I I can basically use what I have because I know  it well all right so I'm always trying to expand  

that but I don't want to just learn more words I  really want to know them well so that I can use  

them and feel confident about using them all  right all right let's see final comments here

this is the second time I ask sorry uh I can only  connect usually at the end of the stream uh is it  

a course a Class A platform I want to know a  little bit more about it uh well just click on  

the link in the description below the video but  the basic idea is what we do on YouTube so these  

videos right here it's really explaining to people  how to get fluent and giving some examples and  

helping you understand some vocabulary but this is  really just like one part of the learning process  

so the basic idea of fluency is that you have to  eliminate whatever doubt you have like I I just  

tell people the fastest way to become fluent is to  delete or eliminate or end or destroy the doubts  

that stop you from speaking so whether you do that  with me or you do that with you know somebody else  

or on your own that's what you have to do so you  don't have to learn more but you really should be  

understanding vocabulary better that's the basic  idea and so what I do in these videos is is kind  

of showing you trying to prove to people that this  is true and show you that it works and it actually  

can get you more fluent when I'm teaching things  you should be feeling more confident it's a it's a  

process you can actually feel when it's happening  you should be thinking like oh like I call these  

aha moments when you understand something  better and you think oh like now I get it  

so I feel more confident about something and  language learning should be easy all right if  

the teacher is making it possible for you to  understand things better that's the job of the  

teacher typically in a regular classroom a teacher  is just going to say learn these things here is  

a list of vocabulary I want you to go home and  study that but that's not really teaching you  

anything it's just giving you some translations or  examples of things an actual teacher the point of  

a teacher is to really help you understand things  by destroying any doubt you might have about the  

vocabulary and so part of that is explaining  things another part of that is giving you many  

examples from other people so if you can hear  me say something and another person and another  

person and another person and each person says it  in a different way all those examples will help  

you remember it and make you feel very confident  about that so the the whole point of uh fluent for  

life is to help you understand the language  without a doubt and I'll just draw one more  

kind of contrasting thing here I want to put this  in my new guide uh to fluency as well but if you  

think about the typical way that people learn a  language like the English as a second language  

approach everybody is improving by understanding  things better that's the only way we improve we  

don't improve by speaking more because if we speak  we're not really learning anything new so yeah  

it's it's a little bit of practice but uh the the  greater amount of practice the real practice that  

gets you confident is understanding the language  better all right so usually what happens is like  

you will get you know a long time like let's say  you have like a 1H hour class but maybe you only  

understood one thing really well and that you  felt good like okay I I understand what that  

means you spent one hour to understand this one  thing and maybe the rest of it you're just like  

ah I don't I don't really know what that means  so the actual Improvement just came from this  

moment where you understood something better but  you spent an hour to get that moment what I do I  

really want to give you these kind of moments much  more rapidly so you could spend the same amount of  

time learning but understand much more and so you  get fluent faster So the faster you can destroy  

doubt so if I if I can destroy all these doubts  you have very quickly then you become a confident  

speaker very fast all right that's how it works  so fluent for life this is the basic point of the  

program to help you understand the language  without a doubt so that you speak fluently  

all right so if you'd like to do that if you'd  like my help you can also apply these ideas  

yourself if you want to learn things on your own  I've given you lots of examples of how to do that  

but if you'd like to do it again if you're Mo most  of the people who joined the program they just  

want results quickly so maybe they they work or  they don't have a lot of time to learn uh or they  

they need uh English for their life or career or  whatever so they're happy to pay a little bit of  

money to to get fluent much faster but if you need  life or if you need uh English for your career  

then this is probably the best investment you can  make because learning how to communicate well like  

you can really do anything with that and English  fluency will stay with you for the rest of your
