with me because today I'm not feeling very well I'm still under the weather

my cold has got slightly worse so I'm not feeling very well there you can see

in the distance the rain falling everything looks very murky today very

unsettled and yes it's raining right now you might be able to hear the rain

falling above my head as I speak to you so where am I where is that other drip

by the way the word drip can mean a person who is not very strong or maybe a

person who has a weak character so yes we can say drip it isn't a very nice

Duncan's terrible cold so I'm full of cold I didn't sleep very

well last night I kept waking up coughing and sneezing so far today I

have sneezed 937 times today so I have been counting yesterday

ri-ight over a thousand yesterday over a thousand times I actually sneezed

yesterday but today yes only a few not as many but

there might be some during today's livestream so I do have some video clips

on standby just because just in case my voice becomes too too hard to use or

maybe for you too hard to listen to it's raining it's pouring I'm standing in my

from one of my full English lessons because I feel is if I want to have a

little rest do you mind okay this is an excerpt from one of my

full English lessons and I think the topic the topic that I'm talking about

in this clip is very appropriate there are many commonly confused words in

English that have opposite meanings a good example being the words lend and

borrow quite often the word borrow is used instead of lend can you borrow me

your pen of course the word used should be lend as this word means to let

someone have something of yours for a short time you give something to someone

on the understanding that they give it back to you later you lend it to them on

the other hand the word borrow means to take something from a person for a short

time you borrow it from them so lend is to give temporarily and borrow is to

take temporarily lend borrow lend borrow

find rain to be a real pain a pain is an annoying thing you can feel actual pain

as it happens there are many ways of expressing illness can you see there on

the screen right now you can feel unwell you can feel sick you can also be under

the weather you can be out of sorts you can also be off-color

so if you are feeling off-color it means you don't feel very well you feel unwell

you feel sick you feel under the weather you are out of sorts so out of sorts can

be used generally to mean not appear yourself so maybe if you seem a little

unhappy or maybe if you seem unwell we can say that you are out of sorts

off-color is another one you can be off-color which means that you don't

feel very well you feel unwell sometimes we use this to mean slightly unwell so

if you have a slight illness we can say that you are off-color here's a good one

have have the loogie if you have the loogie it means you have caught an

illness maybe a virus so you have the loogie

and apparently the the word Lurky comes from an old radio show that used to be

on many years ago called The Goon Show apparently the word loogie came from

that radio show and now a lot of people use it we can also say that you come

down with something you come down with something so you have become ill

something has made you unwell you have come down with something you've picked

up something so we can use both of those phrases to mean you have become ill you

have come down with something you have contracted something so there's

another word so if you contract it means you get you suddenly become overwhelmed

by an illness because you have contracted an illness maybe you contract

or catch a bug something that goes up your nose and causes you to become

unwell like today in my mouth at the moment I have one of my little blue

about nowadays is cancer terrible subject but it is something that seems

to affect everyone I know at least three people who over the last five years have

been affected by cancer so cancer is a very common ailment illness I suppose

illness something that causes your body to become weaker

and quite often fatal as well so yes many different types of cancer

apparently the most common cause of cancer or should I say the most common

I'm not there there are many ways of expressing feeling ill and because I

have a cold today I thought I would show you some of the ways we can say or you

can say you have caught a cold you've got a cold you have the flu you have

caught something you have a case of something so in this instance the word

case means instance so in this case you are using the word case to mean instance

or occurrence so you have an occurrence of flu or maybe an illness that makes

you feel unwell so you have a case of flu you have a case of and then next to

it you will put the illness that is affecting you

you have come down with a bug you have come down with a bug the word bug can be

used in many ways or we can say you have picked up something you you've picked up

something so to pick up something means to contract something you have caught

something so I've caught a cold I've contracted a

cold so to contract just means get you have got a cold you have contracted a

cold a few moments ago I mentioned the word

bug now here is a very interesting word and this one can be used in many many

ways as well ooh so there the word bug at the top of the screen bug can be a

harmful microorganism a very small living thing quite often with a single

cell so a harmful microorganisms such as bacteria we can describe that as a bug

an illness caused by the above so a harmful microorganism causes a serious

illness and the illness can also be described as a bug an activity taken up

or done with enthusiasm you can have a bug for something for example mr. stunk

mr. Duncan I can't even say my own name mr. Duncan has the English bug that

means I'm very enthusiastic about English in u.s. US English in American

English you might say a small insect a small insect is also a bug bug and

there's more there's more a concealed or hidden listening device that is used for

spying can be described as a bug a small microphone that has been planted in an

office or maybe someone's home so you can listen to someone talking and they

don't realize that you are there listening to them a concealed or hidden

listening device used for spying and also for those who are really keen

words not only in English but other languages as well that people don't know

where it came from they don't know where it derives from or when it was created

coughing a lot yes and what have I got in my wheelbarrow today then do you

think what is in your wheelbarrow where we saw the wheelbarrow a few moments ago

in my full english lesson so what do you have in your wheelbarrow and we mustn't

you I can't don't have to apologize I can't help giving you the cold I caught

it I disagree I think I think Steve owes me and also you an apology

I didn't cough deliberately over you or sneeze you know like that but yes I

don't care for mister don't lose your balance I know I don't feel very well I

I'm doing this and I'm ill he's a martyr a martyr to his

is always berating me because he says I'm always ill with cold which I am I

get a lot of them it's true it's my weakness I think and yet I lead this

very healthy regime regimen I think you say in America and of going for lots of

exercise taking vitamin C taking vitamins all this sort of thing and yet

he hardly gets any cold at all in fact since he came back from China 12 years

I've only had four cold four and I have fat for a year this is my fourth my

fourth cold in twelve years that's pretty good so I think my immune system

is very strong there's some other things you you're not so good at resisting that

cold is one of them so yes using a lot of tissues or other words for tissues

tissue you you can say handkerchief handkerchief or paper handkerchief so

this is a tissue tissue but also that the funny thing about the word tissue is

it's also it also mimics the sound of sneezing so you when you sneeze you go a

tissue and this is a tissue so so also some people use the brand name

Kleenex so maybe this can be described as a Kleenex I've needed a lot of these

painkillers paracetamol I need plenty of those there are others

this is just a generic brand so that's got no particular brand name that's just

the name of the drug and I'm sure a lot of us use that that to sort of a pain

relief it just makes you feel a bit better take some of the some of the sore

throat away some of that horrible feeling in your head you've got to be

very careful with paracetamol though what I love is the attractive lady on

the box look at that they put this really attractive lady on the box the

box of tablets and there is a lady and I think she's naked as well there is

actually a naked lady on this box of paracetamol and I have no no reason why

I don't understand why she's naked can anyone tell us why there's a naked lady

on the box of paracetamol maybe maybe the idea is that the tablets are going

to relieve your pain but maybe she could as well maybe maybe that's the message

they're probably not the only relief she could provide yes I've got it I've got I

feel obliged to to tell people I'm sure they already know paracetamol is very

good as long as you don't take too many it's one of those drugs that if you take

more than eight a day you can get seriously ill and poison your liver yes

your liver dies never dies a good way badly but I won't go into that but yes

yes see no more than a today and they know that you gotta be careful that it's

not if you've got a cold paracetamol is hiding in lots of other

over-the-counter products like cough medicine yes so what you can do you can

accidentally take a cough medicine and then take these as well and you've

doubled your dose you can be seriously ill so too much paracetamol is bad for

your liver so don't use this though don't take too many at once and some

people take overdoses of paracetamol because they want to end their life and

apparently this is the worst thing you can

use isn't it because all you end up doing is killing your liver and leaving

yourself in agony so how delightful definitely not I think

now things which are supposed to be good for cold but you don't really work at

all but nevertheless I still take vitamin C a little mint can you use that

by the way is the monitor vitamin C is been around for four years as a supposed

cold remedy yeah but in fact there's lots of evidence to show it doesn't

actually work at all I mean we need so much vitamin C every day in our normal

diet yes but taking anymore isn't really hasn't really been proven to have any

effect on the cold but somehow I still take them anyway there are many but but

Steve there are many magic or supposed cures for the cold or something that

helps you so a lot of people believe that eating fruit or eating a lot of

fruit when you have a cold can help cure you well maybe not the trouble with

fruit is it's got lots of acid in it and what you can if you take they actually

tell you not to have too much fruit when you've got a cold because it's sort of

it's wears away at the back of your throat the acid and makes it makes it

actually might make it worse oh dear so probably not a good idea to take lots of

citrus fruits yes or if you do that drink a glass of water here's another

one here's an old-fashioned sort of remedy you do it mr. Duncan yes

echinacea that's pronounced echinacea I don't know why won't it focus on there wait there...

echinacea focus! there we go there we go it's a sort of traditional herbal remedy

pronounced echinacea there was a drops but you can get tablets as well again

does it work I take it because I think it does but I don't know whether it

actually does there is some evidence that product does help you not that well

any any type of echinacea but anyway I take it anyway it didn't help at all

this time but then you take it and you think well would it have lasted longer

yeah I didn't take what I love about this is it actually contains alcohol it

says here on the side can you see what it says there

this product contains ethanol harmful for people suffering from alcoholism so

if you are an alcoholic do not take this I think that's basically that's just

that's just a sort of it a generic warning yes well yeah I mean you're not

gonna have much alcohol from that you know if we drop what if you had what if

you had 20 bottles of this you might got expensive way to get drunk yes but it

still might be cheaper than alcohol no this is this is very expensive it's

about 12 pounds a bottle mind you it lasts a long time so really I take them

do they work I don't know no they don't work this is something you you commonly

have when you've had a cold at night after the cold you often get a cough

don't you're a serious nasty cough I know irritating COFF you can't sleep at

night so here's a sort of example of a cough medicine that we have over here

Kevon yeah let's call that one's been around for years and it makes you a bit

drowsy and send you off to sleep again do they work probably not I think just

sips of water is probably enough to keep a cuff away but you like your little

sweets don't you you like the sweets loves it lozenges yes I've been I've

been sucking one of those today have you what while you've been live on air yes

that I think that they definitely do help don't there I found that sucking a

sweet definitely does help well the it got a particularly it saw

through that particular sweet that I was eating earlier contains menthol so

menthol is very good for clearing your sinus or your nose your sinuses and also

it relieves the pain in your throat so yes I quite enjoyed taking that earlier

so it did help my throat some people abused cough medicines

stinks I know it's very strong it contains something that's quite what our

call in here mistress trisexual shall I try some what I've got left chesty cough

Oh Jessie okay Steve we've got it I'm gonna try some of this I wouldn't it's

about six years old probably out of date like good it stinks

it's disgusting okay maybe not I'm not going to try that I wouldn't because who

knows what reaction we'll get it's probably full of bugs yes especially if

you've had it if mr. Steve's been holding it it's

going to have lots of filthy disgusting bugs there's something in here to make

you drowsy and your height I could do with that yeah so can i some people say

my live stream is very good for that for allowing people to go to sleep what

comments are people making I haven't even looked at the comment there it is

there it is right in front of a wheelbarrow full of pills yes that is

correct I do i do take lots of pills it's better vitamin D as well somebody

mentioned earlier that that I take vitamin D so they must remember that

from a past live stream mr. Duncan Emory Emory ready says took vitamin C and D so

well done for remembering that I do take vitamin D I don't know oh I'm just broke

what's up on this doing idling with something while I'm live on air mr.

Duncan just the top of this bottle okay and yes so I do take vitamin D it is

supposed to help with coal because we're all supposed to be a bit deficient in

vitamin D deficient deficient if you're deficient it means lacking it means you

are don't have enough of it if you do you don't have enough of something so

maybe you are deficient you are that the level of a certain thing is too low is

if you live in countries like the UK where we don't get a huge amount of

sunlight and we're being told not to go in the Sun because it's bad for your

skin so people put Sun cream on they cover themselves up and over a period of

time your body becomes depleted of vitamin D which naturally you get mostly

from sunlight so they I think that it's worth taking a vitamin

D supplement if you don't get very much sunlight and that can help fight off

infections but they've the colds have come very early this year normally I

don't get a cold or sort of October November time but yeah this is you know

Western in September so I was taken aback taken by surprise yes but I was

getting a cold this early and one of the things is also that we know lots of

people who have colds including our neighbors ah grad aleut says raw garlic

is good - yes all week but we like garlic anyway ah Lewis says don't go

back to work well I did have last Monday off work yes I should have had more than

one day off but I had it so much to do I couldn't really not go back aspirin yes

and aspirin is is is an alternative painkiller to paracetamol aspirins had a

bit of bad press there over the last number of years because it's one of

those classes of painkillers which a very bad fear stomach well but don't

they say also aspirin is very good if you are going on a plane ah well they

use this because that's what aspirin does it thins your blood out it makes

your blood more more liquidy yes but they're not they don't advise it now

okay because you're also more susceptible to bleeding so and and I'm

to getting stomach ulcers and things like that so though that on balance

they're not saying that it's it's very good so now now Inc so now so now taking

aspirin before you go on a flight is not really recommended okay another class of

painkillers which is related to aspirin is ibuprofen okay and you've got to be

careful with that one as well because it's corrosive to the stomach lining all

those types are paracetamol is very good you can take it on an empty stomach it's

it's very it's a very incredibly safe drug as long as you don't have you know

more than the recommended dose so in ibuprofen they're very bad for your

stomach and if you've got if you suffer from

sort of over acid or stomach or problems with your stomach

you should be take them and you certainly shouldn't take them on an

empty stomach No so always so so a lot of a lot of

medicine anyway you're supposed to eat something before you actually take it

some of them yes some antibiotics you mustn't but yeah Sergio says vitamin C

sucks vitamin B rules well they're for different things in the body aren't they

yes yeah exactly so as long as you're having a balanced diet you shouldn't

need vitamins but I don't know I take them anyway anyway very interesting very

interesting to see what you had in your wheelbarrow today they're all legally

obtainable drugs yes there they are legal

so nothing we've shown you today is illegal ah yes

k he says did you try turmeric good for your liver skin heart yes this is this

has become popular now turmeric as a cure for lots of things information if

you join this it's better to be very good for mentally make you very alert

mentally as well yeah you definitely need that I definitely need that and I

do take a drink don't I yes with the turmeric in it yes these

these tea bags with turmeric it's like delicious like a hurdle tea yes that and

I put it in curries as well yes I know the other week he put too much in and I

had terrible diarrhea the next day it was a bit yellow the curry yes that's

ibuprofen yes that's it just got to be careful with it because it can it can

then that will put you into bed as you'd be seriously ill there's a common cold

you can walk about you can get on with life normally flu flu is something that

when you have it you know you have it because it makes you very ill yes they

say you sir well if there was a 5-pound if there was a some money that somebody

had dropped on the floor you you just couldn't be bothered to pick it up okay

that's that might be the strangest reference I've ever heard my father used

to when he had a cold he had a lot of colds he would always take whiskey he'd

go to bed hot toddy you used to call it he'd warm up the whiskey with some water

didn't didn't yours back that didn't your dad always take whiskey for

everything that's another story but he said a lot of people say that alcohol

bit of alcohol helps with the cold well even if it doesn't you feel better right

you well Steve is going to make a cup of tea and we're going to have a tea cake

in a moment pound mirror you're right there's no such thing as a safe medicine

I think you're right there yes they're only safe as long as you take them in in

the proper dosages and even then they've all got side effects yes

so all medicine is dangerous I suppose but then you can have too much of

anything you can have too much water if you drink too much

cautery can kill you so anything can kill you but especially medicine so

always handle medicine with care keep away from children and always check the

package always read the label lewis says that he thinks he's coming down with flu

oh dear oh dear you've got a wrong we don't want you to get that no right I'll

go and prepare the tea and the tea cakes that's it and and then we couldn't rest
