It is a tradition in the UK to eat roasted hedgehogs on the 5th of November.

We could start something new here, Steve, where we just make up traditions

that people don't know are actually not real.

So. So, yes, every November the fifth, we put hedgehogs. Yes.

On a on a large bonfire. And then we eat them.

We take the spikes out of them.

Well, once they're cooked, they come off very easily. They fall off.

But the tragedy is what happens is that people prepare bonfires

several days or weeks in advance

of bonfire night, big bonfires, you know, to the tune of your house.

But what happens is the hedgehogs are wanting to hibernate and they see this lovely

pile of sticks and things and they crawl inside to hibernate, not realising that that's a bonfire.

So lots of hedgehogs accidentally get killed on the 5th of November.

You display something, you demonstrate something that you reveal

something you reveal to other people,

something that you hide and then show.

There are many, many ways of using that particular word,

and that's what we are going to do today.

It was a very strange day yesterday.

We went out for a walk yesterday into town

and we decided to do something we haven't done for a long time.

We actually walked in the rain,

which might not sound like a big deal,

but to us it actually was a big deal.

So we decided to walk in the rain yesterday.

It was absolutely throwing it down.

It was coming down heavily.

The rain was pouring.

However, at one point it was raining,

but also the sun was out at the same time.

And I was able to capture this beautiful piece of video.

Look at this.

So this is what I filmed yesterday as we were walking along.

And you can see the rain is coming down,

but also so you will notice that the sun is shining as well.

And you can see the beautiful reflection of the light

as the sunlight hits the raindrops.

So this is something I don't think I've ever done this before.

whilst it is actually raining.

And even more unusual

it was also sunny at the same time.

So it's one of those strange moments of time where you actually get

sunlight and rain at the same time.

So there I was walking along yesterday.

We were going through the centre of much Wenlock.

Yesterday the rain was pouring.

You can see all of the raindrops

and of course I have slowed this video down as well

so you can really appreciate

the shimmering light as the raindrops fall.

It's lovely.

In fact, some of the flowers and some of the trees are now coming out again.

They think it's springtime and even the birds are getting confused

because quite often at this time of year when the weather gets cold,

we normally have lots of birds arriving from other countries,

but they haven't come yet because the place is where they normally come from

are themselves still mild and warm so they haven't arrived yet.

All I can say is I think nature is going to have a bit of a shock

when the weather does suddenly get

cold and wintery.

I think so.

Today we're looking at words and phrases connected to show,

it might seem like a very simple word.

It might seem like a word that you

you might assume you are already familiar with, but you might be surprised also

how many words and phrases are connected to this very simple looking word.

The word show has more than one use.

And as I've already mentioned, yes, it is true

there are many ways of using the word show

and we are going to take a look at some of them today.

It can mean we feel or display

to hold something in plain view is show.

So when we show something, when something is in

plain view, it means something that is very obvious.

Something you can see clearly is in plain view.

And quite often if you put something on display, if you display something,

maybe you are having an exhibition, you will put something on show.

You show it to show something is to reveal

or display an item, an object,

maybe something you want to display,

such as a piece of artwork or something like that.

A performance

held in front of an audience is a show.

You perform a show.

So in that sense we are using the verb and also the noun.

So to perform a show

is the noun, the thing you are doing,

the performance you are putting on, you are showing,

you are putting on a show.

So we are showing we are expressing the verb

and also the noun in that particular sentence

to appear somewhere at an arranged time.

You show at a party, it means you appear,

you are there, you arrive and people can see you.

You show, you show.

We can also use the word show up, show up.

If you show up, it means you arrive.

You have arrived at that place

and people can see you.

You are very obvious.

You can be seen.

You show at the party or you show up

to demonstrate.

An action or method is show.

So you might show someone how to do something.

You are demonstrating something.

So to demonstrate is to show

one person how to do something.

Or maybe you are showing many people how to do something.

You might say that I am demonstrating the uses

a good example is if you are playing a game of poker.

It is a card game and most people

who play poker normally gamble

and they will wager money on the outcome.

They will reveal their cards.

So maybe when you are playing the game,

you will try your best to hide the cards.

So can't see what you are holding in your hand.

But then there might be a time when you have to show your cards.

You will have to reveal all what you have in your hand.

So a revelation of some sort is

show quite often used with an object

and a thing.

There are ways of using show.

Show is used as the action.

So the show is the thing are doing.

You show something, you demonstrate something.

Then we have the past participle of show

which which is shown shown

something has been shown

the past participle of show is shown.

And then we

have showed, which is the past tense.

However, it is worth noting that you can use showed

sometimes as a past participle as well.

And that's one of the reasons why sometimes English can be confusing, because something that appears to be

one thing can quite often be used in another way

in certain situations.

Here are some examples now.

He had shown me his new bike.

He had shown me his new bike.

So we are showing that that thing was done.

It was done.

He showed me his new bike

and then we can use that also as a past participle

he had showed me his bike before it was stolen.

So in that situation you are saying

something that was done in the past

before another event occurred.

So that's the reason why

sometimes words like show

especially when we are using different types of tense,

can be confusing.

A phrase that we often use using

the word show is show up.

As I mentioned a few moments ago, to show up,

to arrive in person, to actually be there.

So if a person shows up, they are actually there.

They show up in person.

You go yourself, you actually go to that place.

You show up at a party,

you show up at a demonstration.

You show up at a walk or maybe some special event

to show up to arrive in person.

It means you are actually there.

Here's another one.

This is something a lot of people like to do.

I don't like it personally when a person decides to show off.

We live in an age where lots

of people seem to enjoy showing off.

They like to show off.

If you show off, it means you brag, you boast extreme.

I hope not.

A lot of people do that these days.

They do. They like to show off

to have a show down,

to have a conference station.

Maybe two people decide to meet and have an argument.

Maybe they have a difference of opinion and they want to talk about their differences.

Maybe they want to have an argument

or maybe some sort of conflict.

You have a showdown.

Two people who do not agree with each other,

they might meet and have a showdown.

And to have a confrontation is to have a showdown.

I like that expression.

I know if if you like watching cowboy films,

you will know that a showdown

is when two people decide to meet together

and they decide to have an argument or a fight or a confrontation.

They call it a showdown.

They have a showdown.

They have an argument or a confrontation.

Here's another 102 show.

So one up to show someone up

to embarrass someone.

If you embarrass someone,

you make a third person feel ashamed

or embarrassed a little bit embarrassed.

You make that person feel embarrassed.

You show someone up.

So here is another use of the word show as well.

you shame that person.

You embarrass that person.

For example, in a sentence you really showed me.

That means you are carrying out a vote.

You want the group to vote on something,

you are asking them to vote on that thing.

You want a show of hands.

So if you want a show of hands, it means you want a group of people to vote.

Those who want something to happen,

please show your hands and people will raise their hands

to show their opinion or what their vote is.

Here are some phrases that we can use using the word show.

First of all, show business.

Another one we can use is show time when something is about to start,

when something is about to begin, maybe a performance,

maybe a type of show is about to begin.

We can say it's show time

and we have showboat.

Showboat, something that is very extravagant,

something that is done in a very extravagant way.

You can say that a person showboats

if they are being extravagant

in their behaviour or the way they are showing their feelings, they are showboating,

they are trying to get all of the attention,

they are being very extravagant in their behaviour.

So we can use that as a phrase as well.

Here's another one. Maybe

there is a person who is with you

and maybe you don't want to be there anymore.

Maybe you don't want them around anymore.

Maybe they are being annoying.

You might decide to show them the door and this, of course, is the one that Mr.

Steve mentioned earlier.

To show someone the door means to ask

or tell someone to leave.

You want them to go, you show someone

the door, you ask that person to leave.

You don't want them there anymore.

You ask them to leave the room.

You ask them to leave your house.

You show them the door.

Quite often, a person who has overstayed their welcome

might be shown the door.

You might show them out, you might ask them to leave.

And then we have the basic definition of show as a noun.

A show can be a theatrical production,

a production of some sort, a theatrical performance,

a TV broadcast or a radio

broadcast can all be described as a show,

something you are performing, something you are putting on,

something that you are showing to the people you are doing.

Something may be something you've rehearsed already,

maybe something you have prepared, a performance.

You are showing the performance, a theatrical

performance, a TV broadcast,

a radio broadcast, or

maybe even an Internet broadcast as well.

Don't forget, I suppose you might say that this is a type of show

because I am here presenting something to you.

I am putting on my own show.

So I hope those were interesting and helpful

uses of the word show.

I've never heard the phrase shock out.

I will be honest with you.

We can use lots of other words or phrases

that include the word out, but not shock out.

Shock out. I've never heard of that.

So it might be used in a song or

a piece of music, and it might be being used poetically.

Sometimes in songs you might find that

the use of English or certain types of grammar

are normally changed or sometimes reversed in songs

and poetry as well.

Sometimes it can happen in poetry also.

Michael Victorian says if a person is rude,

you have to show them the door.

I know, I know, I've been in a situation,

I've been in many situations in the past

where I've been with someone, maybe they've been visiting my house or visiting me

and they they've been annoying,

really annoying.

And I felt as if I want to show them the door.

I felt as if I want to ask them

to leave as quickly as possible.
