Live English Lesson - SUN 6th AUGUST 2017 - Learn to speak English - Grammar / English questions

Oh but of course now I am NOT in China I am actually in England and that is where I

am broadcasting to you from right now we are live it's official for this Sunday

afternoon here in the UK it's just coming up to five minutes past 2:00 it's

Sunday it is the 6th of August August has

arrived and of course August is a very special

month for certain reasons which I will go into a little bit later on we will

talk a lot today about August because August is a very special month for me

anyway it's a very special month so all of that coming later on now I started

the day in a very good mood I woke up this morning as usual with a big smile

on my face I always like to wake up every morning with a smile on my face it

is how I start every single day of my life but this morning after getting up

and coming into my studio to have a look at my computer I checked

on YouTube and I found that I have a copyright strike can you

believe it so I I must be honest I'm not very happy about this so now I have a

copyright claim from some company who are saying that

the music that appears in one of my lessons in fact it is the lesson all

about the mouse in the hole I have received a copyright claim for those who

aren't aware of this this is what happens when someone says that you are

stealing their music or using their music without permission so that's

what's happening right now to me I have been issued with a copyright claim

someone is saying that I am using their music without permission but of course

the music that I'm using was actually part of a software package which allows

you to upload the music and use it on YouTube so I must be honest I woke up

this morning feeling happy but then I checked my youtube channel and found

that I had a copyright claim copyright now copyright is a very complex law

copyright normally means that the person who created I don't know perhaps a

certain piece of music or maybe a movie or a TV program or a work of art they

have copyright that means that the person who created the thing has the

right to use it so copyright there it is it's an interesting word copyright is a

very complex thing especially when you want to use music and segments from

movies on your YouTube channel or on your

YouTube videos so you might get claims from other people saying that what you

are using belongs to them even I have been a victim of other people stealing

my videos and using them on their YouTube channel so sometimes even I am a

victim but in my case it is genuine but quite often when people say that you are

stealing their copyright sometimes the claim is false it is not a

real claim so yes so to say that I'm a little bit annoyed today is an

understatement in fact sometimes I feel that false

copyright claims are a pain in the arse they are a pain in the arse or of course

if you are watching in the United States they are a pain in the ass more about

copyright later I'm sure so here we go it is Sunday it is August as I've

already mentioned August is a special month because something lovely happens

during August every single year now every year around about this time I get

very excited because my birthday comes in August so next weekend

next Saturday it will be my birthday I will be another year older how old will

I be well maybe maybe I will tell you later but I thought it would be a good

idea to take a look at one of my very early videos now many years ago because

I have been on YouTube now for almost 11 years but it became a bit of a tradition

for me to actually make a video on my birthday so I thought first of all

we would have a look at one of my very old videos so this video you are about

to watch it's very short it's not very long but this was filmed in 2008 so

around about nine years ago and this is one of my birthday messages from the

past hi everybody this is mr. Duncan and Engler how are you today are you okay I

hope so are you happy I hope so today is a

special day happy birthday to me happy birthday to me

it's my birthday today and I'm away on my holidays I'm actually in Wales at the

moment I'm in the middle of a large forest at this Snowdonia National Park a

very beautiful scenic place here in the UK and I'm having a little break away

from my video lessons can I say a big thank you to all of you who have sent

messages of congratulations concerning my birthday thank you very much yes mr.

Duncan is another year older do I feel happy about that not really thank you

very much for watching my videos thank you for your comments and your support

so there I was way back in 2008 making one of my yearly annual birthday

messages I don't do it anymore I used to do them every year but I stopped I think

I did the last one in 2013 or maybe 2014 that was the last

time I did one of my special birthday messages because last year if you

remember last year I was actually live on YouTube on my birthday

sadly this year I won't be live next Saturday but I will be with you the day

after my birthday on the 13th so next Saturday it is my birthday if

you wish to send a birthday greeting today you are more than welcome to

because we have the live chat as well you have the chance to type your

messages live to me on YouTube isn't technology amazing a lot of people ask

mr. Duncan what is it like being live on YouTube is it very stressful do you feel

nervous when you do it yes and yes it can be very stressful

especially when things go wrong like today at the beginning of my live

English lesson did you notice I have a slight technical problem today so we

have the live chat as I mentioned lots of things to come your way today we have

such a busy two hours yes I am with you through till 4 o'clock today lots of

subjects lots of topics to talk about and of course this week yes I have a new

numbers and this something we are going to talk about

fit and healthy so how do you stay in shape so when we say stay in shape we

mean fit to stay fit to stay healthy to stay in shape so what do you do to stay

some people are not very good at maths

I'm not very good at maths I will be honest with you at least I'm being

honest so are you good at maths also do we have any phrases or any idioms to do

with numbers and counting for example there is an idiom that goes your number

is up your number is up so if we say that your number is up we mean that you

are about to die your number is up so there is an idiom all to do with numbers

but do you know any idioms to do with numbers or counting baby is this says

every week so let's have a look at the mystery idioms we have two mystery

idioms for you today to take a look at to have a look at would you like to see

the mystery idioms now okay whoo they come here is the first mystery idiom so

these are pictures and they represent well-known expressions so there is the

first mystery idiom but what is it and of course there are two mystery idioms

and here is the second one the second mystery idiom so these are both

well-known expressions in English but what the heck are they and there is the

first one again many people have written to me to say how much they enjoy the

mystery idioms I think these are quite easy today I

don't think these are difficult ones I think these are quite easy and there is

the second one and there is the first one once again so what are today's

mystery idioms do you know what they are so I thought it would be nice to take a

look at something nice and friendly to watch because this morning when I woke

up I I received some very annoying news so let's have a look at something nice

shall we last week in my garden I was doing some filming and I noticed that

something very unusual was happening in the corner of my garden but can you see

what is going on here can you see what is happening so you can see there are

there are two pigeons sitting on the fence but look there is a baby pigeon so

that actually is a very young pigeon in fact it has just left the nest so this

particular pigeon is a baby pigeon and it's just left the nest and the two

pigeons that are with it are its parents so this particular pigeon has just left

the nest and there it is sitting alongside its parents

so a rather nice moment in time that I managed to capture this week two very

proud parents with their young offspring that's a great word isn't it offspring

the offspring is the young isn't that lovely

a nice moment of time in the garden this week of course I am cray

easy about nature and I've had a few people write to me asking mr. Duncan can

we have a look at the sleeping bull again a few weeks ago I showed you the

video of the bull at the back of my house and it was having a sleep so we're

going to have a look at the sleeping bull because a lot of people have asked

if I could play it again because they think it's ever so cute

ah isn't that lovely lots of people wanted to see that again the sleeping

bull at the back of my house lots and lots of people love that you don't often

get to see cows or bulls sleeping normally they're just walking around

eating the grass so here we go it is a Sunday afternoon I hope you are happy

today it is the weekend once again but of course tomorrow for most people it is

back to work dear me I hope the following week will be a good one for

you so questions we are asking today how do you stay healthy what do you do to

stay healthy how do you stay in shape a little bit later on mr. Steve is going

to be coming into the studio to give us some of his own advice how to stay

healthy so that's coming later on and have we become too politically correct

are we too sensitive these days it would appear that people are always

complaining about something that someone has said or done so have we become too

politically correct I am now going to show you a lesson all about political

correctness and this particular lesson was made quite a few years ago it's one

of my early lessons and this is all about political correctness I hope you

enjoy it

you know the world of English is a fun and exciting place to be and so glad you

could join us for another lesson oh hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England

how are you today are you okay I hope so

are you happy I hope so in this lesson we will look at the

changing attitude to the way we use words and how the English language is

changing because of this be careful what you say

they say that the English language is very colorful and can be used in many

interesting ways to describe things around us however over the past few

years we have started to change some of these words because we feel that perhaps

they may be rude or could cause offence to certain people we call this change

political correctness wow so many nuts would you like one hmm not that to be

politically correct means to consider the impact of certain words on those

people - who the words relate these groups are often those who have a

disability job titles that refer to gender religion or somebody's sexuality

or ethnic background let's take a look at a simple example of political air

hostess was given to females who work on board

aircraft serving food and drinks and giving assistance to the passengers the

male title was a steward some people thought that separating the two genders

was unfair and gave a bad image to females who were in this profession so

instead a new word was introduced that covered both sexes so nowadays we say

kaping firm this alteration has caused other changes to these days we do not

use the title policemen and firemen instead we now say police officer and

firefighter

we have also changed words that relate to a person's physical appearance we no

longer use the words fat or tubby to describe a person who weighs too much

these days we tend to use the words large or overweight here in the UK we no

longer use the word handicapped to describe a person who cannot walk or has

to use a wheelchair we now use the word disabled or physically challenged

however in the USA the word handicapped is still widely accepted here are some

other examples

a person who is blind is now referred to as visually impaired a person who is

deaf is now hearing impaired a person who cannot walk is now physically

impaired the word impaired means weakened or damaged so am I saying that

something is impaired means that it is not complete or is not working fully

perhaps the most controversial form of political correctness relates to ethnic

and racial words especially when we talk about people from African Caribbean

countries or those who come from that particular ancestry it is no longer

acceptable to use the word color to describe a person of this particular

descent these days the word black is the politically correct term however this

has recently caused problems when we wanted to use the word black as a simile

or metaphor it is generally accepted that the word black is often used to

show a negative action or a bad action such as black market to sell something

illegally black sheep a bad person in a family black magic an evil type of trick

black look to give someone an angry expression black list a list of bad

things and blacken to make something look unattractive

so these expressions have become less popular now even though they do not in

any way relate to the racial origin of a person another example of political

correctness was the attempt to change the word blackboard to chalkboard

however many people thought this was going too far so in that particular word

is still okay to use to this very day it's a good idea that bad idea

oh you agree I disagree it's wrong it's okay it should be stopped it's alright I

have no problem with it no worries it's okay it should be stopped I think

it's disgusting mmm look what I'm having for my tea

political correctness tends to occur in democratic countries where freedom of

speech is taken as a civil right in some ways it is ironic that societies that

encourage free speech are the same ones that are also attempting to suppress it

it is also worth noting that being politically correct is not a new thing

in fact it can be traced back to the early 20th century during the period of

the First World War

there seems to be a big divide about how far we should go with political

correctness some people believe it is a good thing and should be encouraged

while others believe that our freedom to speak has been taken away you may even

hear someone use the sentence its political correctness gone mad love it

or hate it it seems political correctness is around

to stay generally the thought behind it is a good one and maybe we should try to

encourage the positive use of words but some people think we should be careful

not to carry it too far or allow it to get out of hand or out of control it is

yet another example of how the English language is constantly changing whether

it is for the better or worse it's for you to decide

my favorite before I leave you today I would like to say a special hello to my

new friends watching in Bosnia and Herzegovina China Germany Mexico Saudi

Arabia and Venezuela this is mr. duncan in england saying

watch your P's and hugh's in other words be careful what you are saying and to

those leather trousers they are lovely aren't they oh my goodness those leather

trousers I was wearing back in 2008 did you see them they were very hot just in

case you are wondering I do not wear leather trousers anymore it is something

are talking about well of course we are talking about my birthday because it's

coming soon next Saturday also political correctness do you think we have become

too sensitive so what do you think about political correctness what do you think

do you think we have become too sensitive to things because it would

appear that people are being offended all the time about things now I have a

very simple opinion my opinion is you either allow people to say what they

want or you have censorship so there is no in-between as far as I'm concerned

so I think free speech is a great thing even if sometimes people say things that

you don't agree with or maybe sometimes people say things that are very harsh

but you either have free speech or you have sense ship so as soon as you start

telling people what they can say and what they can't say I think it is a very

bad start that's what I think anyway also how do you

stay healthy what do you do to stay fit we have we have mr. Steve coming in at 3

o'clock here he is this is mr. Steve he will be coming in

at 3 o'clock to talk all about his health regime how does mr. Steve stay

healthy and he is very healthy i I think mr. Steve must be the fittest person I

know he is so healthy and he's so slim everyone that Steve knows they are also

jealous they are very very jealous of mr. Steve because he's so slim and he

doesn't look his age talking of age I will be another year

older next week Oh dearie me my birthday is on the way do you see those leather

trousers in that video can we have another look at that can we have a look

at those leather trousers again can we do that let's have a look let's see if

we can do that I'm gonna try and show you the part where we see my leather -

yeah there right there that's it not there not there nope there that's it oh

my goodness what am I wearing ah you will be pleased to hear that I

don't wear those trousers anymore it was a fashion statement that I made a few

years ago oh my goodness they are dreadful look at those trousers

I do apologize for those trousers I can promise you now that those trousers have

been hidden away they are now in a cardboard box in the loft I will never

wear those leather trousers ever again we have the mystery idioms here they are

today's mystery idioms we have some guesses coming in 1 or 2 correct guesses

and one or two incorrect guesses thank you very much for getting involved

and here is the second mystery idiom so besides the idiom I also want the

meaning I also want to know what these idioms mean so just to make it a little

bit harder so what are the mystery idioms and what do they mean there is

the second one these are well known expressions in English and there is the

first one again but what are they we are ten minutes away from mr. Steve coming

into the studio to talk to us again he was here last week lots of people got

very excited about it so I thought we would have mr. Steve back in the studio

again now we were going to go outside today we were going to do something

outside but sadly the weather today is not very good believe it or not in the

south of Europe they are having heat waves at the moment so all of the

countries across the south of Europe and the Balkans they are having a heat wave

whilst here in England it's not very warm at all it's quite cool and we've

had a lot of rain so mr. steve is just nine minutes away back to the live chat

do you stay healthy on a day to day basis well I take lots of regular

exercise I don't really think about it too much I like exercising anyway

walking running that sort of thing gardening that's very good exercise and

eating that's another form of keeping healthy having a healthy diet yes smoke

not that that's anything wrong with that but do you know I choose not to smoke or

drink large amounts of alcohol but although I've been known to don't you

believe that physical health can be beneficial to mental health I think

there's definitely a connection definitely yes why I don't know why I'm

not a doctor but I think if you think this is widely believed that if you stay

fit and healthy bodily then mentally you will also that'll help you mentally as

well I think there was an expression of vice-versa you know you can be mentally

not in a good place and that can affect your physical health as well there is an

expression in English that goes healthy body healthy mind true so there is a

sort of connection between those two things some people of course worry too

much about their health yes they think about it all the time yes do you know

the word yes and that's something that I tend to do worry too much about your own

health the word is hypochondria hypochondria do

not ask me to spell it so a person a person who always worries about their

health and they always think that there might be something wrong

them every time they get an ache or a pain they think it's something serious

if they get an ache in their shoulder they think they are having a heart

attack if they find a lump anywhere on their body they think it's something

terminal they think it's something that will kill them they are described as a

hypochondriac that is an amazing word look at that how many letters is that

word got that is the most that might be the most beautiful word I've ever seen

us need more help than others that's true so I believe that you have a couple

garden so political correctness I say to you what does that mean um that means

well it's a bit it's it's got a bit too far these days it's where politicians

and people in the public life well even everybody in their everyday

working environment feel as though they've got to be Hale or conform in a

certain way so as not to upset other people what I said earlier this is what

I said earlier and this is how I see the parasite I see things like this I I

think you either allow people to say anything or you have complete censorship

so I think it you can't have sort of in-between that because if you have it

in between then sometimes you will be unfair to one group or or over

over-generous to another group so I think you either allow free speech or

you have complete censorship which means you control everything so I suppose here

in the UK it's still quite free but but I think political correctness has become

a very big part of of UK life do what what do you think yes I think it's

everywhere as well you hear people up in America complaining about it as well

I think sometimes it goes a bit too far but you've got to be careful not to

upset people haven't you too much and and of course the other accusation is

that people have become too sensitive people are offended very easily by what

they hear and what they see so maybe there is a bit of that as well so people

have become a little bit too too sensitive yes I think you're right I

think people do get overly since anyway look we don't

know anyway are down that road that's right we can go down any road we want

it's okay as far as I'm aware YouTube is not censoring me yet although after

visited a number of years ago called Lake Verne way in Wales okay a place

that you know very well and I know that very well to see lovely lovely

picturesque part of the rails so how much of your holiday will you be

spending in the garden are you going to be out in the garden ah probably half of

it half of your holiday is going to be spent in the garden yes that's how I

like to relax there I like to I like to clip away that a bit of the bushes and

then trim the grass and just make it look nice keep the lawn trim yes what's

the hardest part of keeping a garden um

weeding I don't like weeding no oh I hate pulling up the weeds I'll tell you

what's really I think what is physically quite hard that's trying to trim bushes

with a big with a big hedge trimmer I've got one that's got an extension on it

and it's quite a heavy machine and it takes a lot of physical effort to do it

digging there's there's something that's quite takes up a lot of energy but it's

very good for you it's it's a physical activity isn't it very physical yes get

out in the garden and that will keep you fit and healthy but you know long as you

don't stickers take a fork through you your foot but you know then that now

they reckon that if you spend a couple of hours in the garden every week it's

actually very good for your health so we are talking about how

often and we've come full circle by talking about how healthy it is to do

what do you think ever the world opinion means the individual or personal view

about something it is your own thought and because of this it does not have to

be based on any fact or knowledge opinion is usually based on your own

idea and how you view that particular subject or situation an opinion is

normally based on two things what you know and the things you have experienced

of course knowing something does not mean that your opinion is correct the

thing you think you know could have come from someone who is also wrong so saying

that your opinion is right because you heard it from another person does not

necessarily mean that it is correct when expressing what you think about

something you give your view you offer your opinion you tell us what you

believe you tell it as it is you tell us what you think you give your two cents

this expression is mainly used in the USA

when two or more people are sharing their opinions we call this a debate or

a discussion of course in this situation the people involved will not have the

same opinion each person will disagree and challenge each other with their own

personal view sometimes discussions or debates can become charged with strong

emotions and the people involved may at times become angry we call this a heated

debate the subject or topic they are talking about may be hard to accept or

agree on the subject can be described as a hot topic there are many hot topics

around things which people find difficult to agree on in some situations

we may not agree with each other while in others we may share the same opinion

and all agree unanimously if we cannot agree on something then we may end the

debate and simply agree to disagree

there are many ways of defining opinion it's your opinion your point of view

your angle your belief your conviction your feeling your idea your sentiment

your standpoint your take your thought your viewpoint the way you see it hmm

evidence based on their professional experience they are usually referred to

as an expert witness experts are very useful because their opinion can be

trusted a doctor may be asked to give their

medical opinion especially during an investigation into a suspicious death

it may seem strange to some people but there are times when an opinion must not

be given a good example of this is the way in which news is reported on

television personal opinions and views must not be expressed by the news reader

the news must be reported in an unbiased way and the people who edit the news

stories must be impartial they cannot make any personal comment or express

their opinions at all there are many situations where a debate or an exchange

of opinions can take place in government there are many debates which are held in

order to allow people to have their opinions and points of view expressed

openly this is commonly known as politics the basic principle of politics

is to express these different points of view in an organized way each group is

called a party and in turn they represent the various opinions of the

population in politics the main division between these different opinions is

normally very clear to simplify this we divide political opinion into two areas

left and right on the far right you have the extreme opinions and ideas far-right

politics tend to be brutal and tough as we move to the middle then these

opinions soften and as we move to the left then the ideas and opinions become

more open and less harsh of course it would be fair to say that over the years

extreme views and opinions have existed on both the left and right

generally speaking far-right political thinking is no longer viewed as

acceptable history has shown that this form of opinion achieves very little

most politics these days can be described as moderate especially when

talking about the right-wing these days we tend to use the words conservative to

describe the right and liberal to describe the left in the USA the

Democrat Party is seen as liberal or center-left

and the Republican Party is seen as being conservative or center-right here

are some words connected to giving your opinion discussion to talk about a

particular subject you discuss something topic a subject the thing you are

discussing the theme of the discussion debate a conversation involving people

with opposite or differing opinions stalemate when both sides of a debate or

discussion cannot reach any agreement dialogue the words spoken in the debate

the words which have been said or those that must be used the action of talking

common ground the parts of a debate that both sides decide to agree on

having an opinion about something is what makes you and me the people we are

we may not always agree with each other but the fact that we are talking is an

important one communication and dialogue help to break down the walls that divide

us the English language gives us a chance to share our opinions and put

forward our thoughts and ideas we may agree to disagree but at least we are

talking as I always say the one thing we all have in common on this planet is our

individuality and as long as we keep talking and sharing our opinions then

there is hope for all of us

the time it is my birthday next Saturday so there I was five years

old and I think that particular photograph was taken at Christmas there

is another photograph taken during one of my school trips and there you can see

the man on the Left that is my history teacher mr. Baker his name mr. Baker and

also the other boy that was my best friend at school his name was Wayne so

there a photograph taken I must have been around about 12 years old when that

particular picture was taken in fact the place where that was taken was not very

far away from where I live now Here I am oh my goodness what is that I'm sorry no

we'll move on no sorry we're not looking at those photographs very embarrassing

sorry about that Here I am a little bit later I must have

been about seventeen seventeen years old when that was taken I think that must

have been around about 1982 I think when that was taken and finally this

photograph was taken when I was around 26 so there's some photographs to

celebrate my birthday next week I will be another year older next Saturday I
