the sky and believe it or not there are many phrases that we can use to to describe certain

types of mood or maybe there are some expressions as well that can be used with the word moon

moon phrases there are many phrases that we can use in english concerning that lovely

thing that we see in the sky almost every night not always because sometimes the moon

will appear during the day so we don't always see the moon at night however there is nothing

more beautiful than a moonlit night especially if you are doing something romantic wow whenever

we think of romance quite often we will think of maybe walking out on a moonlit night the

moon is shining bright and we are feeling those wonderful emotions of love and passion

maybe i'm just wondering how many babies have actually come into this world because of because

of this because of the moon because they they the couple maybe got very romantic you see

because of the moon and because of this they ended up with a baby so there is a good excuse

a new excuse that you can have for getting pregnant you can say oh well i'm going to

blame the moon it is the moon's fault for me getting pregnant that's what i'm going

to blame here we go then some phrases we can use the moon to show that we are happy overjoyed

by something we feel happy about something or maybe very happy about something you can

say that you are over the moon to be over the moon to be happy and ecstatic oh i like

is what happens when you have two full moons in the same months so in one month normally

you have one full moon however it is possible to have more than one full moon in the same

other people knowing and a lot of people do that you see a lot of people moon light as

a way of making extra money and quite often that money will be kept hidden and secret

it no one will accept a 50-pound note shops will not take them you will not be able to

american accent or a british accent i think this is a very interesting question indeed

and some might say that it is not easy to answer but my answer to this question is quite

simple you use the english you feel the most comfortable with you don't have to sound like

an american when you're speaking you don't have to sound like a british person when you're

speaking as long as you feel comfortable with the way you use english that is the most important

thing of all of course it's also important that the other person understands what you

are saying as well so don't worry too much about sounding like somebody else don't punish

yourself by trying to copy someone else's way of speaking what you have to do is develop

your own way of using english don't forget english is an emotional language it's a personal

language it's a language that you use to express the way you feel so don't worry about sounding

like somebody else use english as you would your own language in your own way to express

the way you feel so you don't have to sound like mr duncan you don't have to sound like

some american movie star you don't have to sound like anybody what you have to sound

have you ever been on a busman's holiday have you ever heard of this expression before well

let me explain what it is a busman's holiday is an expression that describes a situation

where a person is doing something for relaxation that they would be normally doing in their

occupation that is to say they are trying to take a break away from their work by doing

something that relates to their actual job for example if i went away for a trip to london

for a break away from making video lessons and whilst there i went to visit the youtube

headquarters to talk to someone about video production then you might describe this as

a busman's holiday i am doing something in my free time that relates to my actual job

we can call anything related to a person's profession as a busman's holiday if the thing

in question can be connected to their normal occupation a doctor might visit a museum of

medicine during a vacation a firefighter might have to put out a blaze at a hotel they are

staying at a person who drives the bus for a living might have to drive the family around

whilst on holiday hence the expression busman's holiday

i always like to introduce new words and phrases to you and today is no exception the phrase

i'm going to show you today refers to a certain item of clothing the phrase is old hat here

you can see in my hand one of my old hats that i used to wear the phrase old hat means

to be obsolete or tired out by being done too often or for too long a thing that has

been said or done time and time again over a long period of time can be referred to as

old hat it has been done so many times before most people have become bored with it a tired

and overdone thing is old hat this new superhero movie plot is so old hat an out-of-date thing

or something that is seen as old-fashioned can be described as old hat it is no longer

fashionable it is boring it has been done too often for too long it is old hat the phrase

derives from the notion of something being worn too often such as an old hat to the point

where it looks tired and worn out it has been used for a very long time

you know sometimes i i become so engrossed in the videos that i actually forgot forget

i'm going to talk about one of my favorite subjects food i've noticed recently that i've

started changing the way i eat now over the past few months i'm sure we've all done this

over the past few months we've all been eating maybe a little bit too much food because we've

been at home maybe in lockdown maybe you had no choice you had to stay at home because

you were you were in isolation you were you were in quarantine so perhaps you were eating

more food than you normally would and i was talking to steve last night about our our

habits and there are certain things that we eat a lot of for example i don't know why

but we seem to eat more bread than we did before we always seem to eat quite a lot of

bread i don't know when it happened but i have noticed that our eating habits have changed

quite a lot so what about you is there a certain type of food that you eat a lot is there a

certain type of food that you consume more than before bread and i think also we also

eat more meat than we used to i don't know why but steve said this last night because

last night we did have a meal with meat and we both agreed that recently we have been

eating more meat so it is strange i don't know if it has anything to do with lockdown

maybe not maybe it has nothing to do with it but we have noticed that over the past

few weeks our eating habits have changed one thing we haven't done yet we have not been

out to eat anywhere so we haven't been to a restaurant and we haven't been to a café

not yet but next week of course because next week there is a public holiday next week and

also mr steve is taking some time off from work we might actually go somewhere next week

we might go maybe to wales and visit somewhere nice next week we're not sure at the moment

because of course it all depends on how good the weather is hopefully the weather will

strange english words coming up i hope you are ready to write them down because the english

language is such a strange place it really is there are so many strange words that exist

so i thought we would have a look at some strange english words right now so here are

i think there are four or five maybe five or maybe six strange english words let's have

a look at the first one right now oh i like this word there it is cranky cranky the word

is used quite often in english and it is used as an adjective and it means eccentric or

strange so something unusual maybe a person who has strange habits or maybe their behaviour

is a little unusual so a person can be a little cranky a little unusual a little odd i suppose

a good example would be doc brown from back to the future so you might describe him as

a as a little bit cranky he's a cranky character because he's a little odd eccentric strange

also a person who is bad tempered so quite often they become irritable or maybe a person

who has become angry we can say that they are cranky they are bad tempered they are

in a bad mood you can say that they are acting in a cranky way they are a little cranky here's

another one another strange english word for this wednesday afternoon in england here's

one that people often use when we are talking about the house market so buying a house selling

a house the word is gazump gazump now this does not sound like a real word but i can

assure you it is a real word

and it is often used as a verb to outbid the buyer of a house whose offer has already been

accepted now i will explain this if you buy a house quite often you will look for a property

that someone else is selling however sometimes a person will agree on the price and then

that person will say okay i want that house and the seller will also say okay you can

have the house but then someone else comes along and they offer more money they offer

a larger amount of money and so the person who originally put their offer in lose the

house because another person has come along with more money and that particular action

is described as gazumping if you gazump someone it means you pay a higher price for a house

that someone else has already made an offer on you gazump that person it is something

that is not very popular people do not like it when they are gazumped especially if the

house is the house that they've always wanted to live in i think so here's another one this

is an interesting word we can use this as both an adjective and a noun anodyne anodyne

is an english word and this particular word can be used as an adjective to mean something

that is dull or inoffensive so something that is safe dull maybe even boring something that

will not offend anyone can be described as anodyne and of course as a noun we can also

mean a type of medicine which relieves pain so a type of medicine that a person might

take to ease pain in their body that particular type of medicine can be described as anodyne

but normally we often use it to mean something that is dull and inoffensive something that

is safe to say something that is safe to do it is anodyne it might even be a little bit

dull and boring

here's another word don't forget you can write these down as well write the words down or

it will be recorded retrospect is the next word there it is retrospect and this is used

as a noun and it is a survey carried out to review the course of past events as they happened

so quite often retrospect is looking back at a situation you are looking at how it happened

you are talking in a very real and honest way we can describe that as candour candour

you are speaking honestly bluntly you are being frank and honest with a person candour

many changes to many people's lives the gravitas the importance the seriousness or the solemnity

can use this also as a noun so this is a noun the importance seriousness or the solemnity

of a situation i like that word so there they are some lovely english words maybe the first

time that you ever heard those words maybe it's the first time that you've come across

often it refers to something such as a piece of furniture you might say the top of the

table the top the top part sometimes we can use the word surface as well so quite often

the word top can also refer to the surface of something the top is the highest position

and then we have the bottom the lowest position quite often it is the lowest point the lowest

position or the lowest part of something the bottom of something we can also use the word

bottom to mean the most basic thing so maybe something that is simple might also be described

as the bottom of a subject or the base of the subject then we have the word side which

means the furthest across for example the image that you are looking at now we have

the side of the screen we have one side and we have the other side for example we have

my left on the side and my right of course for you they will be opposite they will be

the other way around so the side of something the top of something the bottom of something

so these are very basic ways of describing the position or maybe the area on which you

are focusing the top the bottom and the sides which are the furthest across on the left

an emergency perhaps maybe you are waiting to go into hospital for an operation and maybe

you will suddenly be put at the top of the list you are at the top of the list you are

now a priority that means your operation is now at the top soon you will have your operation

because it is important or maybe an emergency then you can be top of the class

something i was not when i was at school i was never top of the class ever never ever

top of the class you are the best in a certain group normally a classroom maybe your fellow

students you are the best in that group you are top of the class we can also say that

something is top of its class so maybe a car that that has a very good performance maybe

the engine is very powerful so a type of car that is better than all the rest in a certain

category or group is the top of its class so there are many ways of using the word top

something that is top-notch is the best quality so if you have something that is top-notch

it means it is the best quality the highest quality is top-notch maybe you have to pay

a lot of money for something you have to pay the top-notch because it is the best thing

so you have to pay the most money for the best thing because it is top notch the best

quality here's another one oh to top something if you top something it means to do better

than before so maybe you top your previous performance you do better than you did before

you top something to do better than you did before maybe if you are running in a race

maybe you run faster than you did last time so we can say that you topped your previous

score or your previous time then we have top marks top marks if you are taking an exam

if you are sitting in exam maybe you will be top in the class maybe you will get the

highest score you have top marks that means your score your exam score is very high top

describe them as a bottom feeder like animals you see so certain types of animals fish for

example there are many types of fish that feed from the bottom of the ocean and they

are often called bottom feeders

feeder means to take advantage of others you are using your privilege or maybe your wealth

the bottom line is often used in finance or in business to mean the final figure the final

thing the final point is the bottom line and then we have words connected with top and

these are the final ones

first of all we have side so we've looked at top we've looked at bottom and now we are

going to look at the side the furthest point to the left or right of course you can also

talk about both sides as well so both sides can also be left or right so you might talk

about both of those things as well don't forget also side can also relate to the top and bottom

when you are talking about something that only has two sides for example a coin so a

oh dear here we go you might have a bit on the side if you have a bit on the side it

means you have a secret affair or a secret relationship maybe you are seeing another

person in your relationship so perhaps you are married and you you might be seeing another

person secretly you are having a relationship with someone else we might say that you have

a bit on the side a secret affair or relationship something you are doing that you are doing

in secret quite often you are doing something that your partner your husband or your wife

is unaware of you have a bit on the side naughty naughty sideline here's another word sideline

the sideline quite often you might hear this used in sport a boundary or maybe the furthest

point away is the sideline the sideline is the furthest point around the side or around

the edge quite often you will hear this used in sport then you can be sidelined so this

is something that is actually happening is an action to be sidelined you might sideline

a person to be excluded or pushed aside so you are not being included you are pushed

to the side maybe you are playing baseball and perhaps you are not very good at doing

it maybe you are not very good at hitting the ball with the bat so they might put you

on the sideline they will make you sit down and you have to watch the match but unfortunately

because you are so terrible at playing baseball you will not be involved you are sidelined

to be excluded or pushed aside

here's another one ah here's an interesting one to side with someone so again we are using

this as a type of action you are showing that you are with a person you agree with someone

you take their opinion so maybe if you are defending a person maybe if you are agreeing

with someone you will take their side it means you join them you are with them maybe concerning

their opinion or the way they feel about something you side with that person and of course there

are many things that people can disagree on there are many subjects that we might talk

about so quite often you will sometimes i suppose sometimes sometimes often sometimes

all the time if that's possible you might take a person's side you take that person's

view you agree with someone you take their side

finally well in fact i think we have two more after this i think we have two more to have

a sideline if you have a sideline it means you have an additional business or activity

you are doing something as a sideline so your main job the job that you normally do is there

however during the evening you do something else you have another business maybe a much

smaller business you have a sideline something you are doing as an addition to your main

job or business so if you have an additional business or maybe an additional activity we

can describe it as a sideline oh dear here we go again a person's backside describes

a person's a person's boom or buttocks your bum your bottom the thing that you sit on

can be described as your backside quite often in british english we will use this you might

sit down on your backside a person's bum or buttocks is their backside

and finally before we go you might sneak in from the side you might sneak in from the

side or creep in from the side it means you are breaking into a place or maybe you are

entering somewhere silently without other people seeing you might sneak in from the

side you are coming into a room or into a building without other people noticing you

are doing it silently without being seen you sneak in of course you can have the opposite

as well you can sneak out as well so it is possible to sneak out from the side you can

leave a building without other people seeing where you are going or who you are and that
