oh here we go again it's a very dismal very drizzly windy day here in the UK

coming up today we have mr. Steve of course talking about lots of interesting

things we will be taking a trip to the beach as well and we will be taking a

close look at some words connected with water and the sea we'll also take a look

at some traditions connected to taking a vacation here in the UK it is

international photography day today as well did you know that and we will be

taking a look at some of my nature photographs you will be able to join in

as well as usual on the live chat because that's why we are all here

together after all it's a Sunday afternoon it's just after two o'clock

here in the UK and this is live English

sometimes you need a very dramatic pause to add suspense and anticipation and

that's a good thing to do sometimes especially in the world of broadcasting

and live-streaming hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today

are you ok I hope so are you happy are you happy as a lark at

sunrise that's pretty happy actually I have it

on good authority so here we go it is a Sunday it's mr. Duncan that's me by the

way my name is mr. Duncan and what I do is teach English on YouTube I've been

doing this for a long long time now I I'm really starting to feel very old to

be honest I've been doing this since 2006 oh who remembers 2006 I I have a

feeling that some of you may not have even been born in 2006 that's how old I

am now and that's how long I've been here on YouTube for nearly 12 years

doing this so alive and I hope you are well it's a little bit Moody today the

weather isn't very nice let's have a look outside we had a little bit of rain

earlier but at the moment the rain is holding off once more so yeah a bit of a

damp day really not not the best of days so we won't be going outside to do

anything live unfortunately however we will be taking a look at some of the

views so there is one of them looking out into the distance in the place I

live and there is another one you can see the clouds are gathering in the sky

everything is looking a little bit murky and it was very windy this morning I was

actually woken up this morning by the wind I'm not sure which wind that was

was it the wind outside or the wind under the duvet I'm not I'm not quite

sure which one it was so we are all here again today and it's so nice to see you

I always get very excited on Sunday morning I wake up very early on Sunday I

get up and I start preparing my live stream there are many things that have

to be done by the way many things you must do before the live

stream can start lots of technical things most of the things are very

boring and I won't tell you about them right now so don't worry about that lots

of nature things today coming up and we will be taking a walk on the beach and

mr. Steve will be doing something quite surprising that's that's the only way of

describing it so I I think shall we give you a little teaser so here is a teaser

to what is coming up later on on the show

so there we were last week on the beach

setting the theme for today we'll be talking about going on the beach we will

also be discussing some of the traditions of taking a vacation here in

the UK I will be showing you some photographs and let us not forget that

today is international photography day I will be showing you some of my favorite

photographs that I've taken myself a little bit later on and I will also show

you my first-ever camera the first camera that I ever owned what about you

do you like taking photographs I know nowadays a lot of people have

their mobile phones to take photography on in fact the other day I was reading a

very interesting article that someone had written about the death of

photography so some people believe that now the art of photography has actually

died it doesn't exist anymore because it's so easy to take a good photograph

you can literally point your mobile phone at anything and come up with a

good photograph just to prove it shall we have a look at something from the

garden that I filmed yesterday because I noticed there were lots and lots of

bumble bees in the garden yesterday so let's have a look shall we so there is

mr. Duncan's dunk ulis and it's looking very very fine at the moment lots of

purple flowers coming out and there you can see the bees are very busy at the

moment and believe it or not this was actually filmed on my mobile phone I

actually filmed this video on my mobile phone on my little iPhone just to prove

how amazing cameras have become now

a little bit later on I will show you my first-ever

camera the first camera I ever owned way back in the early 1980s so there you can

see the bees are very busy they are literally busy bees in the

garden and this is something that I filmed yesterday of course as we come

towards the end of August all the flowers will stop blooming so the bees

are very busy at the moment gathering all of the nectar and the pollen is

being transferred around and of course the pollen is very useful for the

flowers because it allows them to spread around so I love these shots and once

again I'm always blown away by modern technology and how easy it is nowadays

to get some really good photographs so there you can see some video shots taken

yesterday in my garden you can see that the grass is starting to turn green

again after the hot weather yes we had all of that hot weather

do you remember it seems such a long time ago now but we did have a rather

nice summer a couple of weeks ago and the grass was really dying it was going

brown but we've had a lot of rain over the past three or four days and already

the grass is starting to turn green again it is coming back to life it is 12

minutes past two o'clock on a Sunday afternoon it's mr. Duncan coming up

later on we also have the one and only mr. Steve

and I thought today we would do something different as well because we

are going to have a little quiz and the title of the quiz is guess the mystery

chick so I'm going to show you a mystery chick and this is a tiny bird that I

filmed a couple of weeks ago in the garden and now we're going to take a

look at it so can you guess what that bird is it is a baby bird it is a

certain type of bird but what is it what is the mystery chick if you can guess

then let me know if you think you know the answer you can let me know on the

live chat ah yes the live chat I almost forgot how could I forget the the live

chat it's it's impossible and yet I managed to do it so here we go the live

chat is on and we're going to have a look at who was on first because of

English lessons as well I had a very interesting comment this morning on my

youtube channel from someone asking mr. Duncan we know that you've been on

YouTube for many years but have you ever had an award from YouTube now I know

that if you reach a certain number of subscribers you get a special award so

maybe a silver award or maybe a Gold Award and I think also there is a

diamond award as well but I have never received any awards from YouTube even

though I have over half a million subscribers I've never received any

award from YouTube ever so I don't know why I suppose I suppose

I'm just a British person I don't really matter that much maybe so

outside the weather is not too bad a lot of people asking about the weather and

telling me what's their weather is like in their country

so it's not too bad and mr. Steve is taking another week off can you believe

it Steve is actually taking another week off work he had he had a week's holiday

a few days ago and now he's having another one so Steve is feeling very

relaxed and chilled out today and he's been dreaming this week about something

maybe he would tell us what it is questions to ask today if you could be

any animal whatsoever if you could be any animal what animal would you like to

be so if you could be any animal at all what animal would you like to be would

you like to be a doggie a little cat maybe maybe a horse maybe an elephant so

if you could be any animal what animal would you like to be I know it's a silly

question but at the moment it's the silly season this is what they call the

summer months especially where the news is concerned so during the summer months

normally the news becomes very silly because there aren't many good stories

around so you often find that some of the stories that the news reports are

silly stories or very trivial stories so that's something that happens from time

to time especially during the summer months we have the mystery chick I will

show it you again for those who missed it what is this bird what is it it is

the mystery chick but do you know what it is

I will tell you what later I've got lots of birds at the

moment in fact can you believe it a bird came into my studio this morning because

I have the window open and a bird actually came into my studio and it flew

around for about five seconds and then went straight back out of the window so

it flew in and then flew straight back out so what is the mystery chick do you

know what it is the answer coming a little bit later on now we are going to

take a look at one of my full English lessons later on we have lots of things

to talk about including traditions to do with UK vacations words connected to

water sand and the beach and we will be going to the beach in around about 20

minutes time but first of all let's have a look at one of my full English lessons

and this is one of my early full English lessons this is taken from full English

number two have you ever been caught doing something red handed have you ever

been caught in the act the idiom red handed means that you have

been caught in the act of committing a crime or doing something wrong you might

have been seen carrying out the bad act as it was being done or perhaps some

evidence was found that showed you doing it such as a photograph or video clip

you have been caught red-handed you were caught red-handed

the phrase originated in Scotland and refers to the bloodstains found on the

hands of a murderer

as a child I used to play many games but one game in particular still sticks out

in my mind hide-and-seek I bet at some point you have played this game too the

game is almost always played by a group of people one person hides and the other

people must try to find that person we can use hide-and-seek as a phrase to

mean the task of trying to hunt for someone if a person keeps escaping from

your view as you pursue them then we can describe this as a game of hide-and-seek

we can also say that the people involved are playing cat and mouse the pursuer

and the pursued the runner and the chaser to search for a person who is

missing or in hiding can be described as a hunt

grammar is probably the hardest part of English to grasp so I have decided to

take some parts of English grammar and look closely at each one for each full

English episode there will be one grammatical element to look at today we

will look at sentences English sentences fall into four types the statement the

question the order or request the exclamation the statement is a sentence

that gives information to state is to say and quite often saying means giving

information the car is travelling very fast the boy looks very unhappy these

are statements if information is being given or an observation is being made

then we are making a statement the question something means we make an

inquiry we need information so to get it we must first put forward a question if

you want to find out something you will almost always ask a question to

investigate something always involves asking questions is that car going too

fast did you see where that man went can you hear the plane flying over mr.

Duncan's head

to give an order or make a request is to ask for something to be done or not to

be done or to demand something don't be so rude don't drive so fast a request

can be in the form of a question but in this case information is not required to

ask someone to do something or tell them is an order it is a request

an exclamation is a sentence that shows surprise or shock it is often used to

show anger or rage you cheated on me how fast that car is going oh what a mess an

exclamation can also be put forward in the form of a question the most common

form of sentence is the statement this is because most sentences pass on

information conversation normally involves parting with information or

making comments which themselves are statements

doo-doo-doo-doo so there it was one of my full English

coming up today I I can't even begin begin to tell you how many things we

I've got my register here so I've been in the 20 minute 25 minutes that I had

before coming on live with you I've been ticking people off my register and

taking note of a few comments and of all the new people that have made some

comments that we haven't had on before I must have I must say Steve that the live

chat today is being very busy also by the way something very strange happened

this morning we had a strange moment this morning didn't we we did something

very strange and eerie happened this morning I will explain that later

because today we are going to do something slightly different we're going

to also today among all the other things we're doing I don't even know if we've

got time to do everything but we are going to show something to you Steve is

going to show something and I'm going to show something that we've never shown

you before on the livestream so it's something that we've chosen in

particular something that we've never shown on camera ever before and I said

to Steve this morning I asked Steve to find something that to talk about was

just a random thing so I didn't ask him I didn't tell him what to choose I just

said choose something and I will tell you later on

what happened because something really scary almost too scary I was speechless

wasn't time it was a bit spooky it was a little one of those moments when you

think what's really going but anyway we'll talk about that later

I've got some comments here that I want to read out from people I think I might

be psychic I thought I was your sidekick get it a psychic

sidekick the YouTube subtitles will not understand that psychic somebody you can

sort of see things into the future yes a sidekick somebody who is sort of helping

can't watch all of it oh so we'll have to look into that for

you there was something wrong with my lesson 50 lesson 50 exactly ts said

something strange today said that she likes to lick the sea water when she

goes to the beach lick the sea water yes so she must like to taste it oh the sea

board on her hands oh so maybe when you get the water on your skin and then you

lick lick the skin think she'd probably made taste would probably be the the

right moment boy but she's licking everybody on the beach let's see water I

die well something that is dead has already died so the dead thing is

something that has died and died is the action of becoming dead as it were so

you die you die you start to approach death you die something dies back

something begins to die a person with a serious illness will slowly die and then

after they have died they are dead dead so that's the explanation there so thank

salty I think I don't think that would be very good for you if you fell a bit

oh yes because that's one of the questions were asking today in fact we

are asking if you could be any animal any animal in the world what animal

would you like to be what about you Steve I blame you put me on the spot

there mr. doing that's the idea well I think I'd probably like to be a sloth a

slow no I can just sit around in the trees all day doing the thing is that

the lazy animal well we'd say it's a lazy animal

but to the sloth it's probably normal behavior yes yes it's an animal that

seems to spend most of its time sleeping it hangs from the tree doesn't it it

does the sloth or sloth and it and it moves very slowly and if you say

somebody is a sloth then it means they're lazy yes you want you're kind of

saying that they are a lazy person you are so we've got an animal called a

sloth SL o th I believe it would be spelt which sort of hangs in trees look

very sleepy and spends a lot of time asleep and if you describe someone as a

sloth which you use it as a sort of a derogatory term it means you're lazy but

of course the poor animal it's a bit disparaging to the poor sloth because

that's their normal behavior you'd have to be you'd have to be an animal that's

not that's not going to suffer from predation hmm wouldn't you really I

think if you want it if you wanted to be an animal what about what about some of

the sea creatures that live forever some of the like the mussels or some of those

crustaceans live for like hundreds of years

whoa or or or a turtle turtle lives are about 100 years well that more than that

there are some turtles in the ocean that are probably over 200 years old exactly

that's incredible probably being bored stiff most of its life so it's a rather

selfish thing because what what I would be doing is choosing an animal that that

has the longest lifespan ah yes but if the animals that have the longest

lifespan hmm probably don't do any more than the one the animals it's like birds

and insects that have to get everything done in a very short period of time

before they die samer wants to be a lion or a tiger you know the expression mr.

Duncan yes the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long oh dear

is that from something well it is from something it's from a film but it's very

true if you you've only got so much energy and if

you use it all up very quickly you probably live a lot less time than you

would if you used up your energy it's lower so animals like elephants big

animal generally the bigger the animal the slower it is they tend to live

longer hmm but then they don't do so much you know they're sort of lumbering

around whereas things like birds who are using up a lot of energy quickly well

their heartbeat it's an incredible rate slow so a bird their heartbeat is like

there is a there is a direct relationship in in animal biology

between the heart the the heart rate of an animal and then how long it lives in

generally the faster the heart rate the the shorter the lifespan so the average

human heart beat is about between 60 and 80

yes 70s 70s the sort of average yes so so our lifespan is around about 70 80

years yes rich average so yes that would be about right so the larger the larger

you are the longer you live so come on the slower the heart rate you know

what's coming down yet and of course so what why do fat people die early well I

don't think well that's we're just we're not talking about within a particular

species we're talking about species let's say okay well generally overweight

people don't live as long because it's associated with various illnesses anyway

that's horizon so but I'm talking about different species and glad we've cleared

that up and cold-blooded creatures like reptiles tend to live longer because

their metabolism is slower so I mean crocodiles and lived for a long time

don't they snakes live for quite a long time you

know you know what I have no idea how long a crocodile lives for I think it's

quite a long time yes there are many animals that I have no idea it's like

birds it's it's very sad because birds don't live that long I mean a Robin did

you know that a Robin only lives for about between two in five years

well yes I can believe that so birds don't live very long so because of their

metabolism is very high they have a very high metabolism and that's why they're

eating all the time they have to eat things that have a lot of energy inside

them because their heartbeat is is crazy it goes so fast

we won't get that there's another subject we've just thrown in that we

weren't going to talk about I know I can see what's happening here already if

we've got anybody who's an expert in in sort of animal biology they might be

no it isn't it is not a woodpecker I will show you the mystery chick in a

a zebra now I wouldn't like to be a zebra because whenever I whenever I see

zebras on television they're always been eaten by a tiger or a lion yes they're

always being chased and grabbed in there and then that they're normally a feast

for about a dozen lions so no I don't think I want to be a zebra well Chris

just above Helen or Helena is it wants to be a tiger or loves Tigers so you

know you might get eaten crocodiles can live up to a hundred years I thought so

something like that yes does the expression Nicole kiss me slowly

kiss me quickly I that mean yes there is well I can explain that right now

because we are going to go somewhere very special soon we're going to the

beach in fact and that relates to something I want to talk about today

we're talking about holiday traditions now you may have noticed on my t-shirt

there is an expression kiss me quick kiss me quick and the reason why I've

put that there is because when people go on their holidays in the UK they often

wear hats or t-shirts that have the same expression on them and there it is can

you see it kiss me quick squeeze me slow so that's the reason why

I've got that on my t-shirt today because it's a very popular expression

and it's something you will often see on people's t-shirts or on their hats if

you go to the seaside so that's the reason why I have that particular slogan

or expression or phrase on my t-shirt it all relates to holidays and guess what

we're going to do now steve-o are we going to show a video clip yes on the

beach we are going to show a whole video so sit back relax because now we are

going to the beach so we are now in the car we

are about to leave Lake Verne we and we are going somewhere else somewhere quite

exciting somewhere we haven't been for a long time

are you excited Steve yes very excited

that's excited so off we go but the big question is where are we going

so here we are mr. Duncan and mr. Steve but where are we we are now on the beach

on the beach at a typical British beach scene it's freezing cold

we're wrapped up in in woollen winter clothes that sun's out it looks lovely

but it's actually very cold so I've got the beach towel and what have you got

mr. Duncan I have my Spade so I can dig in the sand because we are on a sandy

beach and I have my bucket as well my little bucket so I can put the sand into

the bucket and I can build a little sandcastle whoo

I've got the same matching I've got the blue ones you've got the red ones so are

we going to start building sandcastles mr. Duncan I'm all excited

I think mr. Steve is very eager even though the wind is blowing it is quite

windy on the beach we are very close to the sea we are on the Welsh Coast in a

place called ABBA Davi it's very nice normally but unfortunately it's a little

cool and quite windy what else have you got there Steve I read a beach towel

yeah which I'm now using to keep warm with do you like do you like Steve's

beach towel I'm using it as a scarf to keep warm so let's start building some

sandcastles

oh I do like to be beside the seaside oh I do like to be beside the sea all over

the UK during the summer months people come and they visit the seaside they go

to the beach I don't know what it is about being near the sea the sights the

sounds the weather and also the fresh air to be honest with you there is a lot

of fresh air around today because it's so windy and look at the

sea isn't it beautiful in fact I think mr.

Steve is going to go into the water for a paddle you paddle in the water you

splash around in the sea

all that splashing around in the sea has made mr. Steve feel very hungry so he

decides to go to the local chip shop there's nothing like a bag of fish and

chips piping hot from the fryer with extra

salt and vinegar mr. Steve appears to be enjoying his chips hmm

delicious do you know what this bird is it's a seagull a very common bird that

can often be found near the seaside or on the coast we decided to see what

would happen if we threw some of the chips on the ground needless to say the

result was chaos you will often see seagulls at the seaside

so our day trip to the seaside is almost at an end as we walk off together into

the sunset

so I hope you enjoyed that that was something we did recently during our

little vacation we went to play on the beach

it is a Sunday afternoon it's coming up to 3 o'clock we are now live across

YouTube oh isn't is it it's so exciting Steve I

can't believe it yes oh it was very cold that water mr.

ding did you enjoy it I did enjoy it we had a great time by the way even though

it was so windy ts says there aren't any waves there's an explanation for that

the tide was out at the time when we got there some of the beach a lot of the

beaches in the UK and probably other parts of the world have have a tide so

when the tide is in then you'll have all the waves crashing in but when the tide

is out it can be like it can go out by by up to half a mile or even further so

you'd have to walk a long way to get to where the waves are crashing in so the

bit that we went into was like a large pool of water that was left so the sorry

I was when the tide comes back in you would get all the waves crashing I drew

this without realizing what I was doing right there let me just do that again

I'm not sure what that is mr. doing I

don't know what mr. Tompkins trying to do that was dreadful

I didn't realise what that looked like until I don't know what it is so there

we go so well Aberdovey is is in a sort of Cove

isn't it so Aberdovey isn't right on the coast so it's actually Aberdovey goes in

slightly is so it sits in a kind of Cove isn't it so that's another reason why

the sea isn't crashing everywhere well but I'm afraid without but I'm yes the

tide was out but what I'm trying to explain is is the fact that Aberdovey

isn't just on the coast facing the sea it's it's in a sort of Cove it's in a

sort of little Cove area it goes inland slightly but yes that's it we had a

great time even though it was so windy it was it was an incredibly windy day I

can't begin to tell you how difficult did you

in the sea mr. Duncan would you like to tell your viewers about your experiences

in the sea I didn't go in the sea mr. Duncan did not go in the sea but mr.

Steve went in the sea twice can you believe it

well I have a cold shower

so there it was mr. Steve went in the sea twice not once

what were you saying there I can't remember you can't remember what you

said a minute ago okay then no I was thought about you going in the sea

wasn't I'm mr. Duncan yes I do I love to swim in the sea on I don't swim that's

the reason why I drowned very well I'm very good at drowning but I'm not very

good at swimming yet mr. Steve you're you're like Aquaman you know they should

have got mr. Steve to star as Aquaman because because you are you're such a

good swimmer whenever I see the sea I just want to

get in it I think also I think we're going to get a lot of fan mail from

people about mr. Steve's body I doubt it so now mr. Steve has shown his body

would you like to see my my body snow not particularly because last winds last

Wednesday mr. Steve was in the refrigerator well I wasn't in the Revue

weren't actually in the real it's very tempting though sometimes I really want

to put mr. Steve in the refrigerator but we were looking in the fridge and you

were talking about my weight and I found a photograph of myself when I was about

25 years old would you like to see it so this is what Steve remembers compared to

now so here we go look at this can you see it Steve it's coming on the screen

right now so there is me 25 years old so that's what Steve is talking about when

he talks about me being slim Yohan take your top off and share what you're there

is no way there is no there is no way that I'm taking my shirt off now you did

look like you you needed feeding up a bit I was only say you're feeding

somebody up it means that you're getting them to eat a lot to put weight on I

look malnourished I look like I'm starving but I wasn't I used to eat all

the time Steve will tell this this to you now Steve will tell you that that I

I always used to eat I I used to eat all the time I love food

I've always loved food but when I was young I was incredibly thin I just

didn't put any weight on so a lot of people are going to the seaside here in

the UK and I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of

the places that people like to go to now normally when people go on holiday they

normally like to visit somewhere near the sea and normally there it has a

beach and one of the most popular places or it certainly was many years ago is

this place Brighton no it's not Brighton where is

it it's hid right is it oh is it not

Brighton like Blackpool that's it I began with Abby Blackpool so there is

the most popular place well it was I don't think it's so popular anymore

rough I don't think it's so popular anymore it used to be steve says it's

very rough I think you might be right it it has it has one of the largest drug

problems in the UK as people taking recreational drugs so so Blackpool over

the past few years has tried to to clean its image it's tried to make itself more

presentable so Blackpool was a very popular place we went there didn't Lee

we did many years ago I think it was in nineteen I want to say 1991 we went to

Blackpool together yes I remember that very well

look at those look at those old double-decker buses well this particular

photograph was taken in the 1950s all right okay so this is Blackpool in the

1950s would you like to see Blackpool over a hundred years ago so here is

Blackpool and this is taken over a hundred years ago this is a photograph

by the way it isn't a drawing it's a photograph and you can see all of all

the Victorians on the beach but but do you notice something Steve about that

photograph got lots of clothes on yes then that

they're not wearing their bikinis or that all their swimming costumes they're

they're all wearing their normal clothing on the beach it must be it must

be boiling hot well the thing is the reason why most people go a lot of

people go abroad in the UK on holidays because when you go abroad you probably

virtually guaranteed to go to Spain or Portugal

you'll probably guaranteed to get good weather okay on the beach whereas in the

UK it's very hit and miss so some years the weather will be good other years the

weather won't be good I'm just trying what's that got to do

with Victorian Britain well because the sea could have been cold no no you it's

actually not that they didn't wear swimming costumes they rarely stripped

oh I know that mr. Duncan but we don't know whether it was hot there or not

this is during the summer this is this is a summer photograph taken during the

height of the season this is one of the one a very famous photograph and and

these people are actually on the beach sunbathing and walking around completely

fully clothed and that's because the Victorians were very prudish so

Victorians didn't like to show off their bodies they they would wear clothing

quite often even in situations where where they should really be taking some

of their clothes off so that's it that's the reason why here's something that we

have to mention Steve if you go to the beach donkeys donkeys but why why do we

mention donkeys because children like to have a ride on the donkey on the beach

this is a tradition that would often and still does take place I was reading a

story the other day Steve apparently now because people in the UK are getting so

fat they are actually putting weight restrictions on people that can ride on

the donkey well I can I can believe that and it's a

bit cruel anyway because a lot of people think the donkey's aren't being very

well treated having to ride up and down on the beach all day with somebody on

their back so there are some people there are some people who don't like it

but I think that I mean that donkey looks like it's been well cared for s so

that's probably all right but yes I mean the another statistic that came out this

week you're talking about how long people live oK we've been used to people

living longer and longer and the the average age that somebody lives to has

been going up in the Western world for some time but in the UK this week it's

coming down okay we're actually now it's reversed we're the only country in

Europe apparently where our age is started work that we die at is actually

starting to come down so we're dying younger in the UK than we are in other

parts of Europe so it's flattened out I think I think men now I think live to

about 78 and I think it's gone down and women are supposed to live to about 80

82 but it's coming down because we're getting so unhealthy in the UK now that

we're not living as long as we used to so happy Sunday everyone well let's just

show that's relating to your story where you're saying that they're not letting

there's a weight restriction on who can go on a donkey because we're all getting

so fat in the UK let's lighten the mood with our mystery chick there we go

this little baby it's a little baby bird but what is it what bird is it we have a

guess earlier woodpecker no it isn't a woodpecker but I will show you the bird

a little bit later on we have the live chat we haven't mentioned the live chat

a picture of me 25 years ago I look one up the next time that the thing is the

problem with Steve is most people when when they meet you Steve

they say you haven't changed if they haven't seen you for many years they

will say Steve you haven't changed a bit and it's true you you've hardly changed

over over all of these years that's because I went bald when I was very

young and consequently people haven't seen me go gray and they

haven't seen me go because I've been bald for about 30 years so the answer no

that's probably why the answer is no we won't show a picture of mr. Steve 25

years ago today not today but maybe maybe another time

they've got powder in blackpool says Kerry - yes it's probably drugs seaside

resorts in the UK are not seen as particularly sophisticated but at least

it's not monkey dust so yes it's sort of it's almost looked

down upon if you have if you have a holiday in a beach resort in the UK

people think that you haven't got much money although nowadays of course more

people are staying here in the UK for two reasons one well this year the

weather was fantastic this year it was and - people can't afford to travel

abroad so yes I think more and more people are starting to stay here in the

UK rather than go abroad yes they are but I think so it's still seen as if you

have a holiday in the UK people and then your neighbours going to Portugal or

Spain or somewhere posh Jeff is getting very excited is he bet Steve was all

right well I might I might well have been yes I don't know I can't comment

thank you that thank you Jeff mr. Steve will be talking about this for

the rest of the day this is all I'm going to hear about now

yes where can I find the best beaches in this lovely town when I asked this

question back in the day I try to stretch my mouth is wide but as it is

only possible where can I find the best beaches in this lovely town in Blackpool

anywhere maybe but there are lots of lovely places around the UK you can

visit on the coast and of course you saw the video earlier of as on the beach at

a bedevi thank you sue Kat oh what's that and she's obviously

telling me to keep on eating lots of fruit yes which I am doing we've got

some words and phrases connected with the beach we have because we are kind of

talking about vacations we're talking about holidays and that's the reason why

I am wearing my kiss me quick t-shirt because when people go on holiday they

often wear clothing with this written on it they certainly did many years ago but

apparently you still can get them it's a tradition too it's a sort of bawdy sort

of humor in in the UK when you go to the beach

you'd sort of do you write things like that are on t-shirts or on your hat yes

and you a little bit risky but yes exactly

so it sort of bawdy humor isn't it really bawdy

it's like postcards postcards traditional postcards that you would

send to somebody when you're on holiday yes I sort of got naughty pictures on

them sort of cartoony characters with semi naked women and funny jokes and

things like that so yes it's it's that style it's a style of humour normally

the joke was giving it to the UK normally the jokes would be a little bit

rude wouldn't they they would be yes and kiss me quick is a sort of a sort of a

funny sort of humorous so please please don't complain this is not an offer this

isn't an offer this is an example of something that you will see if

you know if you go on holiday so I'm not asking for anyone to kiss me quick okay

before we get any complaints so one more picture and this is another lovely

postcard picture and what is that that's a pier pier that's a pier we've

got lots of these in the UK it's a tradition around around the UK to have a

beach resort with a Pier which is a sort of a construction which is going

out right out into the water yes and then people walk along the pier as you

can see to the end where you'll have games and an arcade and and probably

comedy acts and fish and chips shot are all sorts of entertainment at the far

end of the pier so it's basically a jetty and at the end you have you have a

building or a group of buildings at the end and people can walk around and this

is something that has been around for again over a hundred years so this

particular pier is it looks like this photograph was taken maybe in it looks

like the 1980s maybe the early 1980s I can't remember which pier this is now I

think it's I want to say Weymouth you can see at the end there it says on it

the the pier theatre ah so there's entertainment people walking

along the the pier to the end and there's obviously some act was going on

there are lots of famous comedians used to perform in these theatres at the end

of piers during the summer season during the summer season that's it and and

you've got games arcades and all sorts of things for children to perform

they're quite big but quite commonly they get burned down these piers they

set up they set and I can get burned down it's got like famous Brighton Pier

they did they did often make the mistake of building these things completely of

wood yes and that they often burned down and

have to be rebuilt there's well there's one it Brighton didn't didn't a ship

crash into the middle of it I should say and do you know where where the the

longest pier in the world is no it's here in the UK and it's at a place

called Southend-on-sea you need a South End one and I think it's one and a half

miles can you believe that so they've built that construction out

into the water off the beach for one and a half miles yes that's a long walk

Southend pier is the longest pier in the world it even has a train going along it

you can you can catch a train at the start of the pier and it takes you all

the way to the end right out into the sea southend-on-sea

another interesting place so we have some words and expressions and then

after that we are going to talk about photography because today it is world

photography day and I'm going to show you some photographs some nature

photographs and I'm also going to show you my first ever camera as well so mr.

Steve you have some some words expressions to do with the sea I have

seven related to the sea so related to sand and some related to water oh so

these are the water ones so the first one is like a duck to water

hmmm that's a phrase like a duck to water so that's you use that expression

when somebody takes to something very easily and and that they don't have any

problem or necessarily require any training so you say that somebody takes

to something like a duck to water when they do something they've never learned

it before but somehow they just seem to do it very naturally yes it's a natural

ability it's a natural ability so somebody for example you might give them

a musical instrument like a guitar or a piano and somehow they just start

playing it and you say you could say all that person they they've they've taken

to that like a doctor water oh you might use it if somebody's very

good at playing tennis for example or a ball game they haven't done it before or

it could be a task at work and they've had no training before somehow they just

instinctively know how to do it and you say that they've taken to it like a duck

to water it's a bit like when I started teaching

for the first time I hadn't really any big experience or much experience and

teaching but I had done other things that meant I had to communicate a lot

but when I moved into teaching I took to it like a duck to water it came very

naturally it did indeed another one is another one water under the bridge water

under the bridge so that's a another a similar expression would be let bygones

be bygones so something's happened in the past some bad events have happened

maybe you've had some conflict with a family member or with a friend and

eventually you agree to to make up and then the expression you commonly uses oh

let's forget about what's happened in the past it's water under the bridge

so in other words something's happened you can't change it but let's just move

on from there so just like water that's moved under a bridge you can't get that

water back again it's happened but we just carry on with our lives has flowed

away so let's forget about all of the bad things all of the disagreements

because it's all water under the bridge under the bridge it might be some time

before you can come to that point say for example you stole something from

a friend and they were very angry about it and you eventually you asked for

forgiveness but eventually they forgave you and you made them became friends

again or you stole somebody's boyfriend or girlfriend and and then you would say

well that's water under the bridge Thursby friend Sergio says there is one

like a fish in the water yeah to do something easily that's referring to the

previous one oh that yes so that would be the opposite - like a duck to water

like a fish out of water oh no no it's it's one that relates to being very

natural in a certain situation so instead of saying you're you're like a

duck in water they say you're like a fish in water

so it's you're having an easy time yes but I use the Russian version oh right

Chris is saying fish out of water oh yes that I'm looking at Sergio oh

right I see our fish in the water oh yes okay yes that's the same thing whereas

Chris further down there has used a phrase which means the opposite of that

yes fish out somewhere where you aren't comfortable doing something you would

say that somebody is like a fish out of water it is so if you weren't used to

doing something and you suddenly started doing it and you were very poor at it

you would say oh they're like a fish out of water they're not very good so yeah

that's the opposite way so yeah another one blood is thicker than water

oh I like this one blood is thicker than water blood means family so you share

the same blood really water referring to friends or other people so when you say

blood is thicker than water it means that relations with relationships with

your family members must should always be stronger than they are with friends

which I mean that's not necessarily but that's what the expression means so

we're talking about the bond yes the bonds between family members so the bond

between family members is stronger than then maybe just friends or acquaintances

so the blood is thicker than water blurred when you say blood do you mean

you mean family that's a shorthand way of saying family really so if you for

example if you had a wedding to go to and a friend was getting married or your

sister was getting married or your brother on the same day how would you

choose which to go to somebody might say to you well blood is thicker than water

you ought to go to the the family waiting hmm first you can also use it to

make a person feel guilty about doing some

thing so you know you you know don't ignore your uncle or don't ignore your

sister yeah because don't forget blood is thicker than water

yeah so they might be saying you spend along a lot of time with your friends if

you're going out every night partying with friends you're not spending enough

time you don't see your grandmother enough or your uncle and your mother

might say Bloods thicker than water it's a very good it's a very good way of

expressing the bond between family family members especially if your family

is very close see some people will say that no matter how because you can't

choose your family is an expression that's often news you cut often your

family don't treat you very well yeah but you can't choose them and so they

take advantage of the fact that their family buy sometimes not treating you as

well as your friends Myers maybe they take advantage of your

kindness or your your goodness yes or just because they always assume that

because your family doesn't think it doesn't matter what they do or say

you'll still always be around hmm so sometimes that expression blood

is thicker than water so sometimes people say well no matter how bad your

family are to you they're still family and you should always treat them better

then you that I'm not saying that's what you should do that's what people do say

yes it happens it happens exactly it happens another one come hell or high

water oh my goodness come hell or high water that's dramatic that means no

matter what obstacles come in the way something it will be done so come hell

or high water mr. Duncan will do his live stream on a Sunday no matter what

what obstacles come in the way whatever happened ever happened what's ever

happened you know the house could burn down there

might be a there might be a people might be attacking us anything could happen

but mr. Duncan will always be on that list I'm not sure if I was being

attacked by a crowd of people I would still be able to do the live stream

maybe maybe a mild inconvenience well say we were coming back we'd had to go

out something had happened some drama and we had to sort that out

but you would be here at 2 o'clock for the live lesson and you can say that

about you could say about a project at work yes come hell or high water I'm

gonna finish that by 5 o'clock today yes and it just means that no matter what

obstacles come in the way so even if if the literally hell came for your or the

worst thing imaginable came for you high water so there was a big flood no matter

what happened you would get that thing done so in that situation hell or high

water just refers to really bad things bad things happening but you're gonna do

whatever you said you were gonna do no matter what

these days or nowadays people ignore their family unfortunately because many

people are materialistic ok Jeff Jeff has a good one turn on the waterworks

yes you haven't got that one have you turn on the waterworks yes you normally

say that about somebody some people cry very easily or cry to get sympathy you

know so you can say oh look she's turned on the water yes she wants some sympathy

or he wants some sympathy that look at them they're they're turning on the

waterworks they're starting to cry you know one of the things that I'm really

tired of at the moment it's putting on television I put the television on to

relax and cheer myself up and there's always people on television crying so

whenever you put the TV on now you put the television on and you've had a busy

day and you want to relax and have a bit of happiness a little bit of happiness

beamed into your face and then the first thing you see is some celebrity or some

person some wretched poor person going

well of course what what reporters want can everyone stop crying on television

if something's if something Bad's happen to somebody then they'll then they'll go

and send a reporter out to interview this person and of course what they

really want is they want to ask them enough questions so eventually they

burst into tears because that makes very good TV apparently people like other

people's tears they like to see other people's other people's problems and and

and and that the fact that their lives are probably better than the person on

the I don't know what's happening nowadays it seems that always and

especially when they promote a new program a new series or a new program

that's coming up soon they always show a little clip or an excerpt and it's

someone crying you know get going is very upsetting though I mean I think

it's I think it's you know it's not I don't know we've often had this

discussion why would anybody be interviewed if something really bad had

happened to you say say you know somebody in your family just been

murdered we see this a lot in the UK it's happening people heard around the

somebody's just been murdered or were those terrorist attacks that we've had

family members been blown up and that and they actually allow themselves to be

interviewed by the BBC or other news outlets to talk about the tragedy and I

think what happens is that when you're in that initial stage of something

tragic happening to you're in a state of shock and you almost do you just you're

not thinking what you're doing so they get in quickly these reporters interview

because they want to they you know it's it's it's it's it's compelling TV

viewing yes to talk to somebody you've just been through a tragedy look let's

be honest let's just tell attain let's just say it as it is other people's

misery is very entertaining and that and that's why television nowadays shows P

pull suffering they're having a bad life or maybe they're having a mental

breakdown or maybe something terrible has just happened and they're crying and

getting upset and the camera is filming them and the the person interviewing

them how do you feel now what do you feel upset and and that they're trying

to get the other person they're trying to get the person that they're

interviewing to start crying Ricardo says he's crying now well that's

not uncommon though whenever watching us when we're on you know if you are crying

because of us then I can understand that I can understand it but it's like last

week when you gave me the cake for my birthday so when mr. Steve brought the

cake in I was always crying but I stopped myself I thought no I'm not

going to I'm not going to get upset on camera I'm not going to feed that

because it's horrible it's horrible there are lots of programs on television

where where you see people who are suffering or they're living in terrible

conditions or they they have maybe a problem maybe a physical problem and

they film them they filmed them and follow them around and then they put it

on television and then it's it's put out there is entertainment

there's sooo categories with us yes Nicole is saying I'll follow mr. Duncan

and mr. Steve show come hell or high water like that attitude

that's my kind of attitude I like it I like it a lot anyway yes I really I'm

really I really feel much better now I now I've got that off my chest

so do you have another one Steve I do now these are related to we've had ones

connected with water this is connected to the sea so if you're at sea hmm

or all at sea it means you're confused you don't know what's going on

disorganised yes so you could say that sometimes mr. Steve is all at sea hmm my

knee appears on the live stream is not quite sure what's going on yes it

relates to sailors hundreds of years ago when they

didn't have proper navigation equipment so there would be at sea and they'd be

lost and not sure where they were maybe they were going around and round in

circles so if you say if you say is to somebody that if somebody says to you oh

you're or you say to somebody they're all at sea it means they don't really

know what's going on little bit confused so they might have a project at work to

do somebody says here's this project do this and you know what's going on

somebody might say oh you might say I'm all at sea I don't know what that I

don't know what to do I'm in a confused State I don't know what to do I I'm I'm

in a muddle oh I like that word muddle muddle not not muggle for you her Harry

Potter fans is not not muggle it's muddle muddle he's another one a

sea change okay a sea change that's a big change a sudden big change in

something in perspective appearance personality somebody can have a sea

change in their appearance they might go for a makeover somewhere and then you

see them again and instead of wearing those drab old clothes that they've worn

for years they're they look modern modern clothes you might say what's

happened to work to Jim he's had a sea change in his appearance yes so it's a

certain big change and something quite in perspective it might not be just it

could be mental it might be your view on something yeah had a sea change in in my

in my view about something mm-hmm quite often we use it for attitude yeah

when there's an attitude a general attitude change we can say there is a

sea change a sea change it means the direction of the thinking has changed so

maybe people were against something but now they are for the same thing so they

were against the thing they didn't like it and then there was a sea change and

now they do like it I think it refers to the fact

the sea can rapidly change from calm to suddenly being rough yes or vice versa

do you want to do for you more to do one more and then we're going to look at

some nature photographs well I'll tell you what why don't you do that now

because the next ones are all related to sin okay then we'll have a little break

then from that and we'll go back to what we were talking about earlier we were

looking at nature earlier and I thought it would be nice to have a look at some

nature photographs but first of all I'm going to show you my first ever camera

because today is international photography day do you like to take

pictures now I know mr. Steve I've never seen you ever with a camera

haven't you I've never seen you take a photograph I mean I mean a camera that

you you actually own I used to have I used to be quite into cameras hmm many

years ago but I don't know why you're you take pictures of everything that

moves right wherever we go mr. Duncan is taking pictures I am absolutely crazy

about photography and I have done I have been crazy about it for many years so

here is my first ever camera the first camera that I ever bought and this was

way back in 1982 who remembers 1982 I'm pretty sure that not many people

watching at the moment remember 1982 looks quite a high-tech

camera mr. taken it was at the time Italia it was this is the Kodak disc

camera who remembers the disc camera when I bought this I thought I was the

most I I thought I was the most up to date person in the world and it wasn't

cheap either it wasn't a cheap camera to buy did you buy it yourself there mr.

day I did I bought it with with some of my my first ever earnings when I was

working and you can see that the film the film or the photographs are stored

on a circular negative so the negative has lots of tiny photographs but they're

all arranged in a circle so they go around the edge a

very unusual design the only problem with this camera and looking back at

some of the photographs that I took with this camera the resolution was very poor

because the negatives were tiny so you couldn't make the photographs very large

so if you tried to make the photographs larger then they would be very very poor

quality there would be very grainy they wouldn't be very clear so there it is my

first ever camera that I owned way back in 1982 so that's when I started getting

getting interested in photography so let's have a look at some of my lovely

photographs now I know this is very self-indulgent it is but it is world

photography day so here's one of them Oh mr. Steve look at that here's one of my

favorite photographs it's a Robin feeding from one of our

bird feeders yes and I captured this in I think this was actually a few years

ago at the house we used to live at so this was actually taken at our previous

house a little Robin having a feed it's feeding on some I think that looks like

a bit of suet so a little Robin having a feed isn't that lovely

you will notice that there are lots of bird photographs coming up here's

another one now here's another one of my favorite photographs so this is one I

took I took this photograph just after moving here and this was taken way back

in 2013 and you can see it is a baby blackbird a little blackbird that's

fallen from its nest unfortunately and it was sitting on the ground and I took

a couple of photographs and then I left it alone because the parent was nearby

calling for it so I took a photograph and then went away another one and Oh

Steve oh look here Oh awesome little blue tits blue tits

having a bath these are all baby blue tits little chicks having a bath right

outside my studio window I took this photograph and they're there they all

look identical if you noticed there they look like they're clones yes it's that

pigeons use that pigeons all look alike it's very difficult to tell a pigeon

from another well you can't tell a male pigeon from from a female pigeon I don't

think you can with a lot of well with a lot of birds you can tell the male from

the female but you can't repeat well with these I'm on about the fact that

they all come from the same family so so you can see there is a very there is a

genetic the even the appearance of them even down to the the color of the

feathers and the markings they they look identical and I think that's amazing so

there is proof of the existence of genetics Oh

unfortunately kodak were very slow to adapt to the changes photography

especially when digital photography came along so that's one of the reasons why

we don't see many Kodak cameras anymore because they sadly they haven't kept up

they haven't kept up to date in fact if I remember rightly the company's having

some problems at the moment so I don't yes probably yeah I think so I would

imagine a lot of these traditional photography companies are having

problems because you can take such good pictures now on a mobile phone why would

you bother buying a camera unless you wanted really professional shots soo cat

says I have many bird photos too I love taking pictures of birds it's one of the

hardest things to do though taking a photograph of a bird because they tend

not to stand still for very long so it's it's very hard nature photography is

actually very difficult Sergio says there is a YouTube channel called Yeol

with many birds on it oh okay so yes that might be something you might look

beached whales there were lots of people who didn't want to see naked around you

so it didn't bother me to be honest because it's nice to get a little bit of

Sun on your body and we only did it one time but we swore that we would never do

it again and we haven't no I'm not coming through

wow that is going back a long way is that like a Polaroid I think the I think

it must be very similar to a Polaroid yes the Kodak Instamatic you would take

the photograph and then you would pull the photograph out of the camera and you

would take something off the front and then slowly it would develop or it would

develop first and then you take the piece of paper off the front and then

you have a photograph first of all they were black and white

and then later they did they did color Polaroid's very clever

look first of all it my most favorite photograph and I think Steve will

recognise this one straight away so this is a photograph that I took about three

years ago here at the house in the garden and this is my most favourite

photograph of all there it is and do you remember what happened Steve yes that we

called him waspy no no that's that's a Hornet

oh is that a hornet? that's Hornety I can't no oh he he came down that we

heard this buzzing Nori's is that right that's it and in the chimney come down

the chimney he was trapped inside the fireplace yes so we rescued him and he

was covered in dust you can all that duster and the hairs on his back is all

the dust from the chimney and he looked a bit well he looked a bit tired and in

need of something to eat so we put him on the but on the bird bath birdbath and

we put some honey on the birdbath and he went and started to eat the honey that

was your idea yes because they well they like nectar don't they of plants which

is full of energy so I thought if I give them some honey and he licked about this

honey for about five or ten minutes and they flew off yes it was lovely a lovely

moment and I could hear this horn it because Hornets are huge it was it was

very very big it must have been I would say it was about maybe three inches long

it was huge I've never seen such a large Hornet before so that was in the chimney

and then it flew into the fireplace and I rescued it and then Steve had the most

amazing idea he's let's feed it some honey and we did so I

got my camera and I took that photograph and that is my all-time favorite

photograph I think I don't know why I love that photograph so much and then

it's stung you and flew off no it didn't know it I tell you now you don't want to

be stung by a Hornet because you can you can die you can be very seriously ill

there is a type of wasp as well isn't no there is one wasp I think it's a

Japanese wasp and it has a very deadly sting so there a Hornet though people

they are saying that Hornets can be dangerous but this this one was so

exhausted yes from flying around in the chimney that it was let's say it was

very passive it wasn't it wasn't very aggressive and I don't know how you go

how did you get it into the jam jar I don't know how you got it into the jam

well I I just I just put the jam jar I just put the jar over it and it it flew

in and then stayed inside and then I just put the lid and took it outside and

then just rested it on the birdbath and it just sat there and then you came out

to have a look and you said give it some honey so we did we've done that before

yes we've we've saved quite a few wasps lives wasps

bees Hornets we've we've saved them all haven't we we have anyway we are 10

minutes away from the end of the program and so mr. Steve has now arranged some

lovely lovely words to do with send because we are talking about holidays

being on the beach so let's have another word bury your head in the sand a phrase

bury your head in this if you bury your head in the sand it means that you're

trying to escape from problems yes life so something's happening in your diet in

your life that needs sorting out and you keep putting it off and putting it off

and people often use the expression to bury your head in the sand which means

that you're just literally putting it you're just trying to forget about this

problem try not to deal with it or sort it out

or avoiding it avoiding it all the time so if you say to somebody no you need to

sort that out stop burying your head in the sand because if you don't do

something something bad will happen hmm can you think of an example of where you

might use that that phrase well you might put off saying something

or asking a person something or maybe dealing with a problem that you have

maybe there is a bill that you have to pay and you keep avoiding the bill and

so you hide it away and then another bill comes through the door yeah and you

go oh no I don't want to pay this bill and so you hide it and then another one

comes and this time they are threatening you could be a credit card oh okay see

so you you you throw it away and then you think oh okay no it's gone now it's

gone now so we can say that you are burying your head in the sand you are

pretending that that is not happening you are avoiding the problem somebody

might say to you look you better pay that bill stop burying your head in the

sand because if you don't they're gonna come and take your house away yes

so it's a very negative phrase it means you are avoiding something that you must

face something that you have to face or accept or deal with isn't there an

animal that buries its head in there in the sand ostrich's that's it an ostrich

buries its head in the sand I believe it is an ostrich an ostrich sometimes will

bury its head in the sand I don't know why it is I don't know why maybe it has

some bills that it doesn't want to pay Oh mr. Duncan is that a joke there is a

that is a sort of joke you see because birds birds have bills here we go

line a line in the sand that's a boundary a limit beyond which you will

not go because there will be consequences if you do so if you draw a

line in the sand it means you're not going to go any further with something

that quite often it said in negative way so for example if you were

late to work a lot your boss might say right I'm drawing a line in the sand

here yeah that's it if you're late anymore to work you're

gonna get the sack that's it so you must not cross that line yes and often you

can say that if somebody's annoying you a lot you can say right that's it I've

had enough of that I'm drawing a line in the sand if you'd say that anymore

you're not going to be my friend anymore that's it that's the line don't do that

or something will happen if you go beyond that so I will take a line in the

sand I will take no more of yes what you are doing you cannot do it anymore I am

now going to draw a line in the sand you cannot continue with your bad and if you

go behavior do continue to do it there will be consequences if you do that's it

super duper that's it force and that's it for sea sand and I could have done

life's a beach and then you fry I've never heard of that expression mr.

it's a play on the our eye on the other expression which uses a very naughty

Tomic is written Tomic says ostriches don't bury their heads in the sand it's

a myth yes I was hoping that someone would say that I think probably went

when certain like an ostrich or a certain and a flamingo with birds with

long necks they stick their head in the water certainly to feed but they're not

really avoiding problems are actually looking for food but it's just an

expression that means if you bury your head in the sand I don't know where it

comes from I only know quite sure where it comes from

no but it means you're avoiding problems apparently ostriches don't bring babies

either so I was thought that's what happened I thought ostriches flew

through the sky with a little baby hanging from it and then they would

deliver the baby ostrich versus a ostrich yes well which one is it like

Wren it is a wren a baby Wren one of the smallest birds in the UK so tiny and so

lovely and many people call it Jenny Wren Jenny Wren so if I see a wren in my

garden I always say oh look there is a Jenny Wren a little Jenny Wren whether

it's a male or female I still call it Jenny

okay everybody does in the UK I'm not sure why that wasn't there I think there

was a there was a song as well in the 1960s called Jenny Wren I think
