I don't know about you but I'm really going to miss that piece of music

after tomorrow yes the end is coming we are nearly at the

end of 31 days of learning English during October 2019

the end is nigh we are coming towards the end of 31 days of English in October

the end is nigh in fact today is the penultimate live English for October so

today is the penultimate which means not the last one but the second-to-last so

tomorrow is the last day of October and my 31 days however today is the

penultimate day penultimate the second-to-last so tomorrow will be the

last day oh dear who remembers this now during the 1970s you would often see

people walking around the streets holding one of these and displaying

these words the end is nigh you would often see people standing around on

street corners growing up I remember seeing in the town centre in Stafford

there was always a man standing in the town centre and he was carrying a large

sign that said the end is nigh so the word nigh means near something is

approaching so nigh is the old use of the word near and for me the end is nigh

it is approaching so tomorrow is sadly the last day of 31 days of learning

English in October but today is the penultimate day we are almost there not

quite but almost so where shall I start what shall I start with because

have so many things to tell you today so many things to talk to you about first

of all tomorrow is the last day of October many people asking what will you

be doing after October ends so what are your plans for November mr. Duncan well

I will tell you tomorrow some of the things that are happening there will be

some changes of course the biggest change of all will be the fact that I'm

not with you every day so in November we will go back to something more normal

whatever that is so more details to come tomorrow meanwhile outside everything is

looking rather nice we've had some sunshine this morning although now it

has gone very cloudy but it is quite mild now I almost went outside today but

I decided at the last minute not to because well it would be a lot of work

unfortunately I mean it's bad enough doing it in here

it takes me hours and hours to prepare these live streams and there you can see

in the distance all of the lovely trees lots of trees now turning red and gold

because it's autumn here in the UK we now have autumn all around us I suppose

I should mention please someone make it stop this the long-running saga of this

I'm not going to say the word I am so tired of hearing this word so it looks

as if this has definitely been postponed until next January however the big news

from yesterday is that there will be a general election here in the UK now

normally we hold our general elections in the spring or sometimes in the summer

however we never have a general election during the winter months because well

first of all most people want to stay indoors during the winter they don't

want to go outside and stand in a queue waiting to vote however they have

decided that this is going to be the date of the general election in 2019 so

Thursday the 12th of December is going to be the date of the general election

here in the UK in winter now I'm just wondering how many people are actually

going to bother to vote because to be honest with you can I just be honest I

don't think many people are going to want to go out to vote in a general

election in the middle of winter and also a few days before Christmas as well

so who wants to do that I'm not sure what the turnout will be

when we say turnout it means the people who actually leave their houses to do

something so when we say the turnout it means the attendance or the number of

people who get involved with the thing that you're talking about so we will

have a general election it looks as if it's happening on Thursday the 12th of

December this year just a few days before Christmas so it's going to be a

very strange winter here in the UK I'm not sure what the weather will be like

it might be cold there might be snow on the ground people might be unable to

leave their houses to vote so I think this is going to be a very interesting

general election lots of things already being discussed and I suppose

the topic that most people are talking about is this because that's what it's

all about so the reason why we are having this is because of this I wish I

was joking I really do and also the other thing that I'm not going to

mention looks as if it's going to happen on this date so this is the date for the

thing I don't want to mention it's so so tiring really hello to the live chat Oh

about a very interesting subject by the way we are talking about dreams and

ambition so when we talk about dreams when we talk about having a dream quite

often we will think about the thing that happens when we are sleeping maybe

something happens in your mind whilst you are unconscious so we think about

dreams quite often is something that happens when you are asleep however

dreams can also be the things that you feel as if you want to do something you

want to do in the future something that you hope will come true so quite often

we hope that a dream will come true dreams and ambition a thing you want to

do maybe you have a fire burning inside you have a fire you have a desire to do

something that can be your ambition something that you really want to do so

much you can't control the urge to do it maybe a new career or maybe a particular

job that you've always wanted to try or maybe something that you want to learn

maybe a new thing that you want to learn how to do so

yes dreams and ambitions and we will be taking a look at

one particular big dream that a person had many years ago a little bit later on

reason why I'm doing this is because to it will be my 13th anniversary so

tomorrow will be the 13th year that I've been doing this on YouTube I started

making video lessons many years ago in 2006 and Here I am still doing it in

2019 13 years later can you believe it would you like to have a look at what my

youtube videos look like so here we're going to have a look at the size and

also the definition of my early youtube videos and this is an actual size so now

you can see the screen in front of you everything is big and clear however way

back in 2006 this was the quality and also the size of the video so there it

is so that's the actual size compared to the definition that you are watching me

in now so it was very small and not very clear so that's what the youtube video

quality was like way back in 2006 and there you can see on the screen I am

standing in front of my lovely red curtains in China so that particular

video was actually filmed in China whilst I was still there so there you

can see just how poor the quality of YouTube videos were way back in 2006 and

that's the actual video quality you were looking at now and also the size as well

so the resolution the clarity of the video was not very good I hope you

enjoyed that it was so small it was like a postage stamp so tiny we are up to

will post video time codes and that will allow you to skip to certain parts of

the video maybe your favorite part of the video so you will often see video

time codes and I will show you an example so there you can see an example

so if you notice the blue numbers you can actually click on those under the

lesson so on my recorded lessons and also on my recorded live streams so

after the live stream has finished you can actually go to your favourite parts

also one or two people have asked how do I get live captions you can have live

captions by pressing that on your keyboard also

if you are watching on your mobile device you can get captions also by

choosing the settings in the corner of the screen as well so it is possible to

do that as well if you want to if you want to and you can choose captions as

well so if you are watching on a mobile device don't worry you can actually get

the live stream with captions as well all you have to do is press those

buttons it's like magic it really is so today we are talking

about dreams and ambitions many years ago I had a dream I had a dream an

impossible dream but the dream came true so I always wanted to teach in some way

in some form and I had my chance to do that way back in 2003 when I went to

China and also I was able to teach on YouTube

in 2006 and that's something that I started doing way back then and I'm

and most people were on vacation so now we have that result and now you need to

vote only in winter and before Christmas because everyone is

at home well this year during the general election we will be voting in a

new government and many young people want to have the chance also to allow

their voice to be heard so many young people want to get very much involved

with this year's general election which will be happening now on the 12th of

December can you believe it just a few days before Christmas I don't understand

what is going on hello Julie just a quick hello because I'm busy so Julie

has things to do that's okay you can always watch this later on we're now

going to take a look at one of my October lessons we are going to go way

back in time to October the 30th 2013 if there is one thing I have realized about

life it's that change never stops there is always something new to deal with

some of these changes are good while some are just plain awkward and annoying

as time goes by I am finding that I want change to occur more frequently in fact

a day without some change based challenge occurring is a pretty dull one

for a while now I have made it a rule to learn at least one new thing every day

quite often this involves changing the way I do something I have certainly

experienced a few of those changes this month and I guess that is what is at the

core of everything we do we experience new things and then we overcome the

changes these experiences bring

do you ever feel as if you are going round in circles this can come from

doing the same thing again and again day after day with no sign of change

sometimes things seem dull and uninteresting the repetitive nature of

daily life can get you down sometimes we get into a rut

everything seems mundane and boring of course this may not be real it could be

self-inflicted sometimes it is tempting to see life this way because it is

easier making those changes requires effort and hard work but before that can

happen you need the most important thing of all motivation

do you like change do you think change is a good thing they say that a change

is as good as a rest for most of us these alterations keep the spice of life

fresh and strong the thought being that regular change ensures that life never

becomes dull that's what I happen to think as well with change comes

adversity you cannot grow a flower without rain those hardships and

setbacks are all a part of the process of change

I actually became so distracted by that video I actually forgot that I was doing

a livestream can you believe it so even I was engaged in my own lesson so we are

back live on Wednesday tomorrow is the last day of October thank you very much

so today we are talking about our dreams and ambition so the dreams you have the

things you would like to do and also the ambition

the feeling or as I like to call it the fire that burns inside you that makes

you want to do something that really really plays in your mind again and

again maybe something you really want to do with your life a new career maybe a

certain job that you have to qualify for so maybe you will have to go to

university or some sort of study so we are talking all about dreams and

ambitions what I like to say is you should never be afraid to have dreams

you should never fear dreaming dare to dream I love this expression and

this is one that has helped me out of many tight situations especially when

I've felt a little bit discouraged by the things that people say around me so

sometimes you have to dare to dream sometimes you have to find the courage

to do the thing that you want to do you have to be willing to dare go on take

the plunge try it you never know it might be very successful so never be

afraid never worry about doing this dare to dream

also another expression that I like is there it is

think big always think big never think small if you are going to do something

think big always imagine the thing that you can do in your mind the thing that

you want to do is the thing that appear you can do because you think big so

quite often thinking big means to have big ideas but also to look at those

things as being real and achievable so quite often you need to think big

another thing that comes in very useful when you are dreaming about the things

you want to do sometimes you might decide to do something that is very

unusual or strange some people like to think outside the box if you think

outside the box it means you have an unusual or different way of looking at

things maybe your way of looking at something is unusual or maybe odd

perhaps some people think that the thing you want to do is really strange and

weird however sometimes it is good to think outside the box to be adventurous

to think of things differently or to see things in a different way sometimes it

is good to think outside the box many great inventions have been created

because someone at some time in the past decided to think outside the box they

saw things in a very different way a person will have a goal now this is

something I mentioned briefly yesterday as well so your goal is the thing that

you see ahead of you the thing that you want to aim for as I said yesterday your

goal is the thing that you want the thing that you see ahead of you the

thing that you plan to do is your goal so what is your goal do you have some

plan do you have something that you want to do in the future do you have a goal

so quite often we will use the word goal to mean the thing you want to do your

aims again another word I mentioned yesterday your aims

the things that you look at and you think one day I will do that your aims

the things you want to do the things you want to achieve your aims here is a word

I mentioned yesterday and I think this is a very important word when we are

talking about the way we feel about ourselves the way we feel about the

things we want to do with our lives your purpose everyone has a purpose even if

you don't think you have one you do and that's the thing that you realize quite

often in your life when it's too late so try to find a purpose try to find

something that you can do maybe to help other people or maybe to provide some

sort of service your purpose we all have a purpose even if we don't realize it we

order to achieve fulfill or accomplish any dream we have to be persistent yes

brave yes patient and never be afraid of failure

now failure is quite often the mother of success because quite often failure will

push you even further so sometimes yes you will try something it might fail it

might not work however that failure might push you even further it might

push you into doing something better so sometimes failure is not necessarily a

bad thing sometimes you have to try and try again

like the expression if at first you don't succeed try try again

just like learning English so a lot of people say mr. Duncan we can't learn

English it's too difficult don't rush don't do it too quickly don't put too

much pressure on yourself and this is something that many people do they try

to learn too quickly so just like having any plan don't rush

whatever it is you were doing don't rush it don't do it too quickly your aims can

also be your target yes as I said yesterday target target is the thing you

aim for just like a goal so goal is also the thing that you aim for you try to

get your goal thinking big is not a bad thing however sometimes it might not go

the way you planned sometimes the thing that you plan

doesn't quite come off as you expected

consider the story of a man who thought

big with a plan to be remembered forever his name was Rex Humbard a TV

preacher who lived in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio his big dream was to construct a

huge Tower that had a revolving restaurant at the

top thus giving the diners a panoramic view whilst eating construction of the

huge Tower began in the early 1970s however the big dream of Rex Humbard

never came to fruition after running out of funds for the mammoth project the

partially constructed concrete tower stood abandoned for 15 years large metal

beams at the top were removed and the tower fell into wrack and ruin the

locals jokingly nicknamed the tower Rex's erection however years later the

tower was purchased by a telecommunications company

and the tower was put to good use by mounting transmitters and cell phone

antennas on the tall tower itself so even though Rex never got his big dream the

thing he failed to achieve did eventually come in useful for something

so there it is a very inspirational story so even though the original thing

did not come to fruition it still served a purpose so sometimes the things that

we set out to do might not have the conclusion that you thought even if you

fail perhaps the thing that you created might come in useful for something else

I think so so it's live English and 31 days of

must admit think big everyone think big we are talking about your dreams and

ambitions during my childhood I had many dreams many things that I thought I

might do most of them I didn't do some of them I am doing now so sometimes you

ambition is the urge the feeling thus the thing that you want to do your

ambition is the driving force towards your goal so quite often a person will

have ambition they see themselves having

success in the future ambition is part of looking ahead and trying to aim for

there is nothing wrong with thinking big many of the great inventors many of the

people who have had success in their lives have always never been afraid to

think big so never worry about thinking big if you

do you know what a buzz word is do you ever use buzzwords a buzz word is a word

or phrase that is seen as being common and contemporary a fashionable phrase or

word is a buzz word for example right now the word empower or empowerment is

used a lot to empower is to give someone the strength or motivation to do

something for themselves or to give someone a sense of independence and

self-worth to empower the young or the poor to empower women to offer

empowerment to those who are in need of help it would be safe to say that

empower is indeed a buzzword for this period of time

can you see what I'm doing here I appear to be running but I'm not moving

anywhere I'm running on the spot to run on the spot means that you are actively

doing it while staying in one place you can walk on the spot you can jump on the

spot in these cases the spot is the place we

are doing these things on the word spot can be used in other ways too you can be

put on the spot this means that you have been placed in an awkward situation with

no warning for example if a person asks you a question you were not expecting we

can say that they have put you on the spot to find yourself in a situation

that is hard to deal with we can say that you are on the spot then there is

in the spotlight to be in the spotlight means to be the center of attention

something is being watched carefully to scrutinize something or someone is to

put it under the spotlight we can also spot something this means to notice or

see something to spot someone in the street means that you notice them you

have spotted them I spotted a woodpecker in my garden yesterday you can also go

spotting for example Trainspotting or bird spotting this means that you are

looking out for one particular type of thing perhaps an unusual design of train

or a rare bird of course a spot can also be a mark on your skin a circular

blemish or unusual bump on your skin can be called a spot teenagers tend to get

spots some animals have in fact if you look carefully you will

find that there are spots everywhere

do you ever renege are you a person who sometimes reneged on a deal the word

renege is a verb that means to go back on your word or to change your mind

after agreeing to do something you say yes to something then later you change

your mind so you renege on your promise to renege

is to break your word and go back on your promise you have had a change of

heart so the thing you said you would do has changed we thought the deal was on

but then he came in this morning and Rene Don it the word renege originated

in Latin and in its original form meant forcibly deny I hope you enjoyed that

can have a bitter sweet experience I think so

what does fruition mean well if something comes to fruition it means it

comes to completion so something has come to completion it has been finished

it comes to fruition a little bit like an apple growing on a tree

it starts off very small and then eventually it grows into a full-sized

Apple it comes to fruition so if you complete your plan if you achieve your

goals if the thing that you imagine comes into reality and it becomes a real

that is tangible is something that you can hold something that is real so you

realise the thing the thing that you dreamt of the thing that you imagined

I have looked for people to give me help although I've never received it

everything that I've done in my life I have done myself I've never really

why but whenever I watch this movie I always feel strangely inspired to do

something creative I don't know why if you want to see a movie that is both

funny it has a very interesting story and I don't know why it's also very

inspirational that is my opinion by the way you might disagree Napoleon Dynamite

try and find the DVD or watch it on television or maybe Netflix and maybe

one of the other services that are available to view things on Napoleon

Dynamite it is a very good movie and also in my opinion quite inspirational
