i might as well say straight away you might hear some strange noises today during the

live stream right outside my studio window someone is having a lot of things done in

their garden there is some very noisy machinery outside my studio today so please bear with

the sounds if you bear with something it means you have to put up with it please don't be

too alarmed by the sounds that you hear today it is all right it is nothing serious it is

my neighbours they are doing a little bit of work in their garden with some very noisy

machinery here we go then oh my goodness i can't believe it we are back again and yes

it is very strange because today it is saturday hello welcome to day number six of 28 days

of february

here we go again yes we are back baby hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are you today

are you okay i hope so are you having a quiet peaceful morning or evening where you are

i really hope so a little bit of noise outside my studio

i'm definitely not in the garden today even though it does sound as if i am because there

are there is a lot of noise around me but please don't worry yes hello my name is duncan

i talk about english i've been doing this forever such a long time do you know how long

i've been doing this for well this year 2021 it will be my 15th year almost 15 years i've

been doing this

i can't believe it even when i say that i mean some people don't even go to prison for

murder for 15 years and here i am on on youtube having to do this for 15 years oh my goodness

anyway we are here together again and oh the weather outside i must be honest with you

today it is a little bit foggy and you might say that today is also a little bit soggy

so first of all can i say welcome to this special weekend live english lesson on a very

soggy saturday

it is soggy it's saturday and that is why i've decided to call today a soggy saturday

yeah it makes sense when you think about it it really does yes outside at the moment it

is murky damp it is also foggy as well misty outside the big question is will will we be

able to play spot the white van today because it's very misty

what do you think so when we have weather like this we often describe this as pea soup

i love this expression so when it is foggy when there is not much visibility in the distance

you might describe this as pea soup so you can describe a foggy day as being like pea

soup it looks like pea soup out there it's a foggy day have you ever heard of that expression

before it is a real expression and we do use it in english quite often when you say that

the weather is like pea soup it means it is very foggy outside here we are live across

youtube on a saturday it feels very strange i'm going to be honest when i woke up this

morning i completely forgot that i was doing a live stream so i was sitting with mr steve

watching bill maher and and then i said to steve oh isn't this lovely we can just relax

and then steve said what are you on about mr duncan have you lost your mind you are

doing a live stream today and then i realized oh yes i'm supposed to be on the internet

at two o'clock so i almost forgot that i was here today which is very silly when you think

about it but here we go anyway oh we are here yes all so many people already i'm being distracted

at the moment by the live chat because there are lots of people saying hello right now

people say that i am not very observant but i am i'm always watching i'm always looking

you see i'm always noticing things that's one of the things steve says about me he says

duncan you you seem to spot everything you notice everything i think i would be a really

good detective or a policeman i really do because i'm very good at watching and looking

and observing people especially when i meet people for the first time i don't know how

i do it but i'm very good at working out a person's character even if i've only spoke

to them for a few seconds even if i've only said hello and they say hello i'm already

thinking hmm is this person a good person or a bad person hmm you see so i'm quite good

at that i think i would make a brilliant detective like columbo so if they ever make a new series

of columbo i i'm your man i think i would make a brilliant columbo i really do hello

yes i do notice things very well and i've noticed motion at the end of my live streams

i notice you always say the same thing you say okay guys i've got to go it's been fun

i really like that by the way i think that's brilliant every every time i finish my live

like to give you a few moments to say goodbye to each other as well because it's not just

me here you see it's you as well on the live chat so is it it isn't just about me you see

today we are talking about a very serious subject although i might have a little bit

of fun with it as well we are talking about making a confession confessing to things making

a confession it is something we have to do sometimes maybe if there is something that

we feel that we've done wrong something that we've done against another person or maybe

something that we have done but we haven't told anyone about but maybe you feel bad inside

maybe you feel bad about that particular thing we call that feeling guilt the feeling of

guilt is the feeling that you have when you've done something wrong and you know the thing

you did was wrong guilt the feeling of guilt so sometimes we believe that it's good to

confess the things that we've done if we've done something wrong something bad something

evilly shall i do that again if you've done something evil maybe you want to confess of

course in certain religions it is good to confess if i had to choose a religion to follow

and there aren't many reasons why i would follow religion because i'm not religious

you see a lot of people ask me mr duncan are you religious and i'm not but if i had a choice

i would probably be a catholic because catholics can just confess you see you could just go

along and say hello i'm ever so sorry i've done something wrong i've done something really

bad and now i have to confess this thing to you i did something really naughty yesterday

can i tell you about it and then i will confess my sin and then i will be forgiven and all

i have to do is go away and do something in the corner of my room and then i'm okay that's

it i'm clean i'm clean again so i like that i think if i was going to choose any religion

i think it would be catholicism just because of that just because you can be forgiven very

easily for anything i have some catholic friends actually and they always make fun of it you

see so even they make fun of their own religion by saying you know you can do anything you

just go to church confess and then just you know go go outside and do it all again

she hasn't got any signs of covid you'll be pleased to hear so that's good i like that

know that you normally have to sit inside a big wooden box like this so you normally

have to get into one of these you see and then you normally have a priest in the middle

and then people will go in and they will confess their sins you see so i think it's pretty

good i think it's a good idea i think it's brilliant that you can go along you can tell

all of your sins all of your confessions you can give them all over and then you can just

skip down the road and think oh okay then brilliant very nice i'm sure i'm going to

get a lot of people complaining about that but i do know people who are catholic you

see i used to do a lot of work for a catholic school and even some of them would make fun

of their own religion you see so it's not me being ignorant before anyone says anything

oh mr duncan mr duncan you are being so ignorant i'm not it's just an interesting thought so

i have no religion i'm not a religious person so so what happens when i do bad things

you see who do i talk to well i normally go down to the bottom of the garden and i talk

to one of my favourite trees you see and tell them about it and then afterwards i give my

tree a big hug and that's it i feel better i feel lovely even if some of the birds now

and again will poop on my head i feel that that that that might be the punishment you

see so if i'm hugging the tree and there is a bird in the tree and it does a poop on my

head i consider that my punishment i think so confessing to things is not easy you are

right that's the thing you see that's why this is such an interesting subject because

making a confession or confessing to something actually is not easy and i suppose it depends

what you've done as well maybe you stole something from your neighbour's garden and then and

then afterwards you feel guilty about it because you stole something so you might lie awake

at night oh oh oh why did i do that oh

like that you see so you will feel that you need to tell someone you need to confess so

maybe you go around to your neighbour's house and you knock on the door and you say look

i'm ever so sorry it was me i stole your birdbath it was me i took it because i thought it looked

really nice and i thought it would look lovely in my garden to be honest so i decided to

take it and i put it in my garden so so yes i confess and hopefully your neighbour will

kind of go they will say okay that's all right uh well at least you were honest i was going

to phone the police but at least you confessed and you told me and you decided to to be honest

about it so i'm not going to call a police i'm not going to send you to jail for the

rest of your life for stealing my bird bath so everything's all right so it is very similar

and and i have in the past had to confess to things that i've done not serious things

you know normally when you're a child you see maybe you break your mother's favourite

ornament maybe your mother has a beautiful china pot that she keeps on top of the television

and then one day you're playing and you're waving your arms around and you knock your

mother's beautiful ornament off the television and it smashes and so you run away you hide

upstairs you pretend that you know nothing about it and then your mother finds her broken

ornament on the floor and she says who did that who who was it which one of you little

i nearly said something really rude then can i say something really rude okay then which

one of you little bastards did that you see there you go

and i will say i didn't do it i didn't do it at all i'm innocent but inside i know that

i did do it so as a child you will often do things and then you will hide them

but later you might feel very guilty about it you might never tell your mother that it

was you you might never own up to doing that thing you might you might keep it to yourself

for the for the whole of your life you see so confessing is not an easy thing to do so

so i i believe it is a courageous thing even if you've done something really bad and you

are still willing to admit that you did it i still think there is a certain amount of

courage in doing that even though if you did something really bad you are a complete scumbag

but at least you you had something inside that allowed you to to actually own up and

confess to that thing so i think it's interesting we often think of confession when we talk

about religion and i think that is one of probably one of the good points that i would

say about anyone who has a religious belief maybe they they feel that doing the right

thing is the is the holy thing you see it is something good to do

we're getting a lot of people talking now about this i didn't know this would be such

a big topic to be honest with you hello also to ricardo yes it is it is based very much

into into the the sense of religion so when we talk about any religion we often talk about

truth and honesty purity so being honest quite often is is linked to to admitting the things

you've done wrong i suppose

oh hello mohsen in my opinion i don't care if you are religious or not religious i still

respect you isn't that great thank you mohsin you are

my type of person and that is it you see so even though i have no religious beliefs to

be honest with you and it all goes back to my school days when one of my headmasters

he would stand up in front of us and he would tell us all his stories but sometimes they

didn't make any sense and then the following week he would stand up in front of us and

say something else but it was the opposite to what he said the week before so children

are actually quite clever we we can actually tell when something makes no sense even if

we're very young so that's what happened to me when i was young so some of the things

that i was told made no sense because sometimes they would say the opposite thing the following

week the stories sometimes would not match up so that is the reason why i always felt

a little sceptical even as a child even as a child

nowadays the distinction between good and evil is not so obvious i think you're right

yes we do live in an age where people have more freedom and i suppose that's one of the

reasons why people fear freedom because it gives people more freedom to do things so

yes i can i can understand that

confessing is something in mind mankind by nature says karim karim yes i think so i think

it's a good thing to confess something you've done so what i'm going to do today i'm going

to confess something now to you

mr duncan okay here is my my first confession today sometimes when i put my plastic bottles

especially my milk bottles because you know nowadays milk always comes in plastic bottles

sometimes i don't wash the bottle before i put it out for the recycling

i know oh i feel so much better now i've told you that so there it is there is one of my

confessions i will give you another one later on but that is one of my confessions sometimes

when i'm when i'm putting my plastic bottles that have had milk inside sometimes i don't

wash them i don't rinse the milk out

that feels so much better i have to be honest with you oh that's great i feel so much better

about that you see so confession can be good you can get these things off your chest the

only thing i think about now is the poor guy who has to take my bottles and at the bottom

of each one there is a little bit of smelly rotten milk and it's because of me that's

it so that's it i have got that off my chest a little bit later on we will be looking at

words expressions and ways of expressing

the confession to confess to something is what you do okay before we do that i'm going

to do something that might be a little risky we are going to try and play spot the white

van now the problem is outside at the moment it is very misty and murky so let's see if

we can spot the white van are you ready so all you have to do is look out on the road

in the distance and see if you can find the white van as it drives by oh okay it is a

little bit murky out there a little bit dull so what i want you to do is see if you can

find the white van and this is a live view by the way this is not recorded this is something

that is happening right now in the distance so all we are doing now is waiting for a white

van as soon as you see the white van

looking at confession making a confession so earlier i actually confessed to something

confession is there something that you've always wanted to say or own up to that you've

done in the past maybe something serious or maybe something not so serious it doesn't

have to be murder it could be something else maybe maybe you accidentally broke your next

door neighbour's window and you never told them it was you something like that okay i

let's just pretend we didn't see the lorry let's just pretend that we did not see the

i'm starting to wonder if they've if they've come to chop my chop my house down are they

are they are they in the garden they sound very close confession so i have another confession

for you once i was traveling back from london very late on a train and i was feeling quite

hungry and unfortunately they were not selling food on the train so what i did i can't believe

i'm telling you this i went along the carriage of the train and i found some food that someone

else had left on the table

very late i was coming back from london i was tired i was hungry

what i did this is a really big confession this is a pretty big confession i think so

now so there i was on the train it was late at night i was feeling hungry i walked along

the train and i saw some food on the table

that is disgusting but it's true i did do it i actually ate some discarded food that

unfortunately they were not jaffa cakes okay i will tell you what they were

there was a sandwich in the packet so someone had eaten one of the sandwiches but also there

was a packet of crisps as well so the packet of crisps was there and also a sandwich which

which hadn't been eaten there there was no bite in the sandwich so there you go that's

what i did my confession ah i have been absolved

i was sitting in the dressing room and the conductor didn't see me oh i see you see so

confess you see you confess to the thing that you did that was wrong confess maybe if a

decide to confess to their crimes so they admit what they did they confess they admit

what they did so if you confess something you admit admit you say i did it i did i was

on the train late at night and i saw the food on the table and i was feeling hungry and

admit own up you must show your guilt even if you didn't intend to show your guilt some

people will appear to be guilty even if they want to hide what they've done

you decide to come clean if you come clean over something it means that you decide that

you are going to own up you are going to admit what you did you are going to confess the

thing that you did you come clean i think it's time to come clean and tell you exactly

what happened so today i decided to come clean and tell you about my strange behaviour when

i am preparing my recycling i don't wash my plastic milk bottles i always leave a little

bit of smelly milk in the bottom and also i once ate discarded food on a train at night

something you make a confession we can say that you make a clean breast you make a clean

breast you release your burden your feeling of guilt no longer exists because you have

confessed you make a clean breast it means you admit that you were wrong or maybe you

admit that you did something wrong or did something bad so when you make a confession

you make a clean breast very nice you are willing to take the blame especially if you

are responsible for doing something wrong or bad so yes you can take the blame for it

you decide to take the blame you admit responsibility of course sometimes it is possible to take

the blame for something when you didn't do it maybe you are trying to protect another

person so maybe you take the blame or you confess to doing something that you didn't

actually do but you do it to protect another person it does happen quite often you are

willing to carry the can for someone if you carry the can for someone it means you are

willing to make responsibility or take responsibility for your actions you have decided to take

the burden of responsibility you carry the can you have decided to admit your guilt or

your responsibility for doing something bad ah now this is something we mentioned earlier

and i might show my little picture again yes this is the picture that i showed you earlier

and this is something called a confession box quite often found in catholic churches

so you'll find there is a box that you can go into and during certain periods of time

there will be a priest sitting inside the box fortunately you can't be seen so your

face is hidden so it you can go in there you can you could admit your sin and then you

will be absolved you will be forgiven you have to go away and make a penance penance

so it is a sort of punishment for the thing that you've admitted to so you look for absolution

when we say absolution you are being absolved you are being forgiven for your sin interesting

i had to make my confession and the priests the priest absolved me but i had to make some

prayers and give one escudo which is portuguese currency to santo antonio yes there is normally

something you must do you see so if you are going to church to be absolved normally there

is something you must do in return for your absolution i think so i seem to know a lot

about this have you noticed

and i'm not even religious very strange ah here is a good one i like this one this is

one of my favourite expressions in english to get it off your chest to get something

off your chest is to admit responsibility you decide that you can't hold the guilt any

longer i have to confess i have to get it off my chest so to get something of your chest

is to confess you admit to doing something you decide that you no longer want to keep

the burden of guilt inside you need to tell someone you have to get it off your chest

my confession is when i was a kid we had two books for mathematics and i forgot my first

book and i took out my second book and the teacher believed it oh i see

book and he believed you i don't think that's very serious we all do that sometimes we all

do things normally to save our own skin you see so quite often we do bad things or we

do things that might be seen as sinful sometimes to save ourselves maybe from punishment or

maybe from blame it can happen

so if we say that a person has to face the music it means

face the music you admit responsibility and now you must accept your punishment you have

our final word for confession is to accept the consequences so you accept the consequences

of your action you do something wrong or you did something wrong and now you have to accept

the consequences because of course all actions have a reaction all things that are done normally

have some consequence
