Do you use the verbs 'suggest' and 'recommend' correctly in your conversations?

The verbs 'suggest' and 'recommend' are great verbs  to use in your conversations and discussions.

'suggest'와 'recommend'라는 동사는 대화와 토론에 사용하기에 좋은 동사입니다.

But, I often hear my students use them incorrectly.

하지만 학생들이 잘못 사용하는 경우가 많습니다.

So, in today's lesson, I'm going to teach you three situations,

and then, end with an error correction exercise

to make you feel confident about using  'recommend' and 'suggest' in your conversations.

starting with situation number 1.

Okay! Here we are!

This is the first situation.

This is where you recommend or suggest an action to someone else.

다른 사람에게 작업을 추천하거나 제안하는 곳입니다.

For example: Someone says to you:

예: 누군가 당신에게 말합니다.

We want to have dinner at the Korean restaurant tonight.

오늘 밤 한국 식당에서 저녁을 먹고 싶습니다.

Now, you know that this restaurant is always full in the evenings.

이제 이 레스토랑은 저녁에 항상 만석이라는 것을 알고 계실 것입니다.

So, you can share this information with them, and then make a recommendation.

So you can say:

They're always full in the evenings.

I recommend you book your table in advance.

Now, you can use 'that' to connect the two parts of your sentence:

I recommend that you book your table in advance.

It makes it sound more formal.

더 형식적으로 들리게 합니다.

In spoken English, we usually drop 'that'.

구어체 영어에서는 보통 'that'을 떨어뜨립니다.

Now, it's the same with the verb 'suggest'.

이제 동사 'suggest'도 마찬가지입니다.

So, here we have the same situation.

그래서, 여기 우리는 같은 상황에 처해 있습니다.

Someone says to you:

누군가 당신에게 말합니다.

My internet connection keeps dropping.

인터넷 연결이 계속 끊깁니다.

You have had this experience before.

You share that information, and then make a suggestion.

 You can say:

Mine did too before I changed providers.

Again, you can use 'that' to connect the two parts.

Or, in a more informal conversation, you can drop it:

I suggest you change your provider.

Okay, let's look at common mistakes that I often hear in this situation.

자, 이 상황에서 자주 듣는 일반적인 실수를 살펴보겠습니다.

So, remember we are recommending or suggesting an action to someone else,

따라서 우리는 다른 사람에게 어떤 행동을 추천하거나 제안하고 있다는 것을 기억하세요.

and what I hear many many times are these sentences:

Let's have a look...

봅시다...

I recommend you to book your table in advance.

테이블을 미리 예약하는 것이 좋습니다.

I recommend you booking your table in advance.

미리 테이블을 예약하는 것이 좋습니다.

I suggest you to change your provider.

통신사 변경을 권해 드립니다.

I suggest you changing your provider.

통신사를 바꾸시길 권합니다.

Now, they may sound correct to you, but they're not.

지금은 당신에게 맞는 것처럼 들릴 수 있지만 그렇지 않습니다.

It's best to avoid these sentences.

이런 문장은 피하는 것이 좋습니다.

What you're doing here... You're using either for example

여기서 하는 일... 예를 들어

the infinitive here or the gerund.

부정사 또는 동명사를 사용하고 있습니다.

Avoid!

피하다!

So, let's cross these out.

자, 이것들을 지우자.

All you need to do is to say:

다음과 같이 말하기만 하면 됩니다.

I recommend...

추천합니다...

That's one part of the sentence.

문장의 한 부분입니다.

And then, we start a new sentence:

그런 다음 새 문장을 시작합니다.

...you book.

...you book.

I recommend you book.

나는 당신이 예약하는 것이 좋습니다. 두 부분을 연결하는

Remember the word 'that'

'그'라는 단어를 기억하세요

that connects the two parts.

.

But, we often drop it.

그러나 우리는 종종 그것을 떨어뜨립니다.

That's why you hear:

I recommend you...

추천합니다...

It's not!

It's: I recommend you book.

So, get rid of the 'to' here.

Get rid of the 'ing' here.

Right! No gerund! No infinitive!

These are two separate phrases, clauses.

So, let's look at the correct sentences one more time.

You're recommending an action to someone else:

I recommend you book your table in advance.

I suggest you change your provider.

And, in a more formal situation, if you're writing, you can put the connective 'that' in your sentence.

그리고 좀 더 격식 있는 상황에서 글을 쓴다면 문장에 접속사 'that'을 넣을 수 있습니다.

Okay! That's for situation number 1.

좋아요! 1번 상황입니다.

Let's look at situation number 2.

2번 상황을 살펴보겠습니다.

In this situation, you are making a recommendation  or a suggestion.

이 상황에서 당신은 추천 또는 제안을 하고 있습니다.

You're recommending or suggesting an action still,

여전히 그룹에 작업을 추천하거나 제안하고 있습니다

to the group.

.

You belong to this group.

이 그룹에 속해 있습니다.

This action will involve you as well.

이 작업에는 귀하도 포함됩니다.

So, let's look at the example.

예를 들어 보겠습니다.

So, someone says:

그래서 누군가가 말합니다.

Let's have dinner at the Korean restaurant tonight.

오늘 밤 한국 식당에서 저녁을 먹자.

And you say: Okay!

그리고 당신은 말합니다: 좋아!

But you know that they're always full in the evenings.

So, now you want to make a recommendation for both of you or the group that's going to this restaurant.

 You can use the same formulation as the previous  situation and say:

이전 상황과 동일한 공식을 사용하여 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

I... So you're part of the group:

I recommend that we book our table in advance.

사전에 테이블을 예약할 것을 권장합니다.

That's possible.

But, when you belong to the group that you're making the recommendation for,

we often use the gerund form directly:

I recommend booking our table in advance.

And, that's a better way of making this recommendation in this situation.

And, it's the same for 'suggest'.

So, here's our example:

You're recommending an action to the group that you belong to.

So, you can use the same formulation as before:

Or, go directly to the gerund.

So, that's for situation number 2.

Let's look at the common mistakes that I hear for this situation.

So, remember, now you're recommending your action to the group including yourself.

What I hear sometimes, which is a mistake is:

I recommend us booking our table in advance.

These words are unnecessary.

Go directly to the gerund:

I suggest changing our provider.

So, let's look at the correct sentences:

I recommend booking our table in advance.

사전에 테이블을 예약하는 것이 좋습니다.

And...

I suggest changing.

그리고...

변경을 제안합니다.

Let me underline that for you so you remember.

기억할 수 있도록 밑줄을 긋겠습니다.

I recommend booking...

예약을 권합니다...

I suggest changing...

변경을 권합니다...

Right!

맞다!

One little piece of information for you here.

여기에 작은 정보가 있습니다.

If you want to make your recommendation or suggestion a bit more polite, a bit more formal,

추천이나 제안을 좀 더 공손하고 격식 있게 만들고 싶다면

you can add the word 'would'.

'would'라는 단어를 추가할 수 있습니다.

So you'd often hear:

따라서

'I'd recommend' or 'I'd suggest':

'추천합니다' 또는 '제안합니다'라는 말을 자주 듣게 됩니다.

I'd recommend you book your table.

테이블을 예약하는 것이 좋습니다.

I'd suggest changing our provider.

공급자를 변경하는 것이 좋습니다.

Just a detail here for you.

당신을 위해 여기에 세부 사항이 있습니다.

Okay!

That brings us now to situation number 3.

이제 상황 3번으로 이어집니다.

In situation 3, you are not recommending an action to someone else or to the group,

but you're recommending something or someone.

For example:

The person has said to you:

We want to have some Asian food tonight.

And, your reaction can be:

I recommend the Korean restaurant.

If you want to make it more formal:

I'd... or I would recommend the Korean restaurant.

Or someone has said to you:

또는 누군가 귀하에게 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

I need to change my internet provider.

And, you can respond by saying:

I recommend my provider.

And then, there are these nice expressions you can add:

I can recommend my provider.

Or: I can certainly recommend my provider.

They are optional.

So, remember, now you are recommending something or someone. Not an action!

So, let's have a look at what the common mistakes I hear are in this situation,

that is recommending something or someone.

I often hear:

I recommend you the Korean restaurant.

Now! First correction is: Don't use 'you'.

지금! 첫 번째 정정: 'you'를 사용하지 마세요.

It's obvious you're talking to the person.

그 사람과 이야기하고 있는 것이 분명합니다.

So, we don't need 'you', just go to 'I recommend',

따라서 '귀하'가 필요하지 않습니다. '추천합니다'로 이동한

and then, what you recommend.

다음 귀하가 추천하는 것을 선택하면 됩니다.

I recommend the Korean restaurant.

한국 식당을 추천합니다.

The second correction we have to make here is to  avoid using the verb 'suggest' in this situation.

여기서 수정해야 할 두 번째 사항은 이 상황에서 동사 'suggest'를 사용하지 않는 것입니다.

You never 'suggest' something.

당신은 결코 무언가를 '제안'하지 않습니다.

You can only 'recommend' something or someone.

So, the verb needs to change to 'recommend'.

That's it! Yeah:

I can recommend my internet provider.

Let's look at the correct sentences then, just to be sure you get this one:

I can recommend my internet provider.

We've got the three situations.

Let's look at a quick summary.

Situation 1 is recommending an action to someone else.

상황 1은 다른 사람에게 작업을 추천하는 것입니다.

In this situation, use the following structure:

이 상황에서는 다음과 같은 구조를 사용합니다.

I... or I would... I'd... (to be more polite)

I... or I would... I'd... (좀 더 정중하게)

recommend or suggest you do something.

추천하거나 제안합니다.

Add 'that' if you want to make it more formal or  if you're writing.

좀 더 격식을 차리고 싶거나 글을 쓰는 경우에는 'that'을 추가하세요 .

Situation number 2 is when you're recommending an action to the group that you belong to.

상황 2번은 자신이 속한 그룹에 작업을 추천하는 경우입니다.

You are involved in the action.

당신은 행동에 참여하고 있습니다.

Now, the best formulation is I... or I'd recommend... or  suggest doing something.

이제 가장 좋은 표현은 제가... 또는 제가 추천하고 싶은... 또는 무언가를 제안하는 것입니다.

The gerund directly after your verb.

동사 바로 뒤의 동명사.

And, the third situation is recommending something or someone.

그리고 세 번째 상황은 무언가 또는 누군가를 추천하는 것입니다.

This time, it's not an action.

이번에는 동작이 아닙니다.

And then, you can only use the verb 'recommend'.

그리고 'recommend'라는 동사만 사용할 수 있습니다.

Never use 'suggest'.

'제안'을 사용하지 마세요.

And then, you can say:

그런 다음 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다:

I recommend...

추천합니다...

I'd recommend... (a bit more polite)...

추천하겠습니다... (조금 더 공손하게)...

or: I can recommend...

또는: 추천할 수 있습니다...

You can even say: I can certainly recommend...

당신은 말할 수도 있습니다: 확실히 추천할 수 있습니다...

I can definitely recommend...

할 수 있습니다 확실히 추천합니다... 그런

And then, you say what it is or who it is that you are recommending.

다음 추천하는 것이 무엇인지 또는 누구인지 말합니다.

We are now going to do some error correction exercises.

So, I've got four sentences for you with mistakes to correct.

What's the mistake in this sentence?

Let's look at the correct sentence to reinforce it:

I suggest you ask for a refund.

환불을 요청하시기 바랍니다.

You can keep the 'that' in if you want.

원하는 경우 '저것'을 유지할 수 있습니다.

Great!

엄청난!

Sentence number 2:

문장 2번:

What's the problem here:

여기서 문제가 무엇입니까?

I wouldn't recommend us to cut our budget.

예산을 삭감하는 것을 권장하지 않습니다.

What do you think we need to correct here?

여기서 무엇을 바로잡아야 한다고 생각하십니까?

Okay! Two things:

좋아요! 두 가지:

This is an extra word we don't need:

이것은 필요하지 않은 추가 단어입니다.

I wouldn't recommend.

권장하지 않습니다.

And, what comes after this?

그리고, 이 다음에는 무엇이 나오나요?

Because it's for the group, you need to use the gerund form.

그룹을 위한 것이기 때문에 동명사 형식을 사용해야 합니다.

So, let's look at the correct sentence:

이제 올바른 문장을 살펴보겠습니다.

I wouldn't recommend cutting our budget.

예산을 삭감하는 것을 권장하지 않습니다.

If you want, you can use the other formulation.

원하는 경우 다른 공식을 사용할 수 있습니다. 더

It's longer:

긴 시간:

I wouldn't recommend we cut our budget.

예산을 삭감하는 것은 권장하지 않습니다.

Or, I wouldn't recommend that we cut our budget.

또는 예산을 삭감하는 것을 권장하지 않습니다.

That's why we prefer the first one.

이것이 바로 첫 번째 것을 선호하는 이유입니다.

It's shorter.

더 짧습니다.

In English, the shorter the better.

영어는 짧을수록 좋습니다.

So, that's for this.

Let's look at sentence number 3:

Which fish dish do you suggest me?

어떤 생선 요리를 제안하시겠습니까?

How can you correct this sentence?

이 문장을 어떻게 교정할 수 있나요?

Again! There are two things you need to do:

다시! 해야 할 두 가지가 있습니다.

The first thing is to change this verb.

첫 번째는 이 동사를 변경하는 것입니다.

Remember! We can't use 'suggest' when it's something.

기억하다! 무언가를 말할 때는 '제안'을 사용할 수 없습니다.

Now, we're talking about a fish dish.

이제 우리는 생선 요리에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다.

So: Which fish dish do you recommend?

그래서: 어떤 생선 요리를 추천하시나요?

And, we don't need to specify the person.

그리고 사람을 지정할 필요가 없습니다.

It's a conversation.

대화입니다.

You know they know you're asking for the recommendation.

당신은 그들이 당신이 추천을 요청하고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

So, the correct sentence is here:

If you want to make it sound a little more polite,

you can say:

And finally, sentence number 4:

I'd recommend you consulting a dietitian.

What's wrong with this sentence?

이 문장에 무슨 문제가 있습니까?

That's an easy correction:

쉽게 수정할 수 있습니다.

I'd recommend you consult...

문의하시기 바랍니다...

Remember! Two separate sentences:

기억하세요! 별도의 두 문장: 조언을 구하는 것이

I'd recommend you consult...

좋습니다...

Let's look at the correct sentence:

올바른 문장을 살펴보겠습니다:

I'd recommend you consult a dietitian.

영양사와 상담하는 것이 좋습니다.

Or:

또는:

I'd recommend that you consult a dietitian.

영양사와 상담하는 것이 좋습니다.

If you want to keep 'that' in there.

거기에 '저것'을 유지하고 싶다면.

Right!

오른쪽!
