Okay! Let's start by reminding ourselves what the difference is between

a countable noun and an uncountable noun.

un sostantivo numerabile e un sostantivo non numerabile.

A countable noun is, believe it or not,

Un sostantivo numerabile è, che tu ci creda o no,

a noun you can count.

un sostantivo che puoi contare.

For example, take the word 'fact'.

Ad esempio, prendi la parola "fatto".

You can say:

Puoi dire:

A fact.

un dato di fatto.

And: two facts.

E: due fatti.

So, obviously, an uncountable noun is a noun you cannot count.

Quindi, ovviamente, un sostantivo non numerabile è un sostantivo che non puoi contare.

For example, take the word 'information'.

Ad esempio, prendi la parola "informazioni".

It is similar to fact,

È simile ai fatti,

but for some reason, 'information' is uncountable.

Don't ask me why. English is not a logical language.

So, you cannot say:

An information.

Or:

If you want to count these words, you have to pair  them with a countable noun.

A very common word is 'piece'.

Una parola molto comune è 'pezzo'.

For example, you can say:

Ad esempio, puoi dire:

A piece of information.

Un'informazione.

Or:

Oppure:

Two pieces of information.

Unfortunately, there is no logic or rule that  can help you to know if a word is countable or uncountable.

Sfortunatamente, non esiste una logica o una regola che può aiutarti a sapere se una parola è numerabile o non numerabile.

The only way to learn these is practice.

L'unico modo per impararli è la pratica.

So, I've put a little quiz together to help you practice some of these words.

I've chosen 10 words, and I'm going to give you three seconds to decide whether each word is countable or uncountable.

The next word is 'advice'.

La parola successiva è "consiglio".

Is it countable or uncountable?

È numerabile o non numerabile? I

Advice is...

consigli sono...

Uncountable.

Innumerevoli.

Therefore, you cannot say:

Pertanto, non puoi dire:

An advice.

un consiglio.

Or:

Oppure:

Advices.

Consigli.

You have to use it as a collective noun.

Devi usarlo come nome collettivo.

For example:

Ad esempio:

She needed some advice.

aveva bisogno di un consiglio.

Now, if you want to count advice, you need to pair it with a word that is countable.

Ora, se vuoi contare i consigli, devi associarli a una parola che sia numerabile.

A very common word in this situation is 'piece'.

Una parola molto comune in questa situazione è "pezzo".

For example, you can say:

He gave me a good piece of advice.

I have two pieces of advice for you.

Okay! The next word is 'feedback'.

Many of you think that 'feedback' is countable. But, it isn't.

Molti di voi pensano che il "feedback" sia numerabile. Ma non lo è.

Be careful!

Stai attento!

You cannot say:

Non puoi dire:

A feedback.

un feedback.

Or:

Oppure:

Feedbacks.

Feedback.

We always use this as a collective noun.

Lo usiamo sempre come nome collettivo.

And we don't even have another word, a countable  word that can pair up with it.

E non abbiamo nemmeno un'altra parola, una parola numerabile che possa fare coppia con essa.

So, just use it on its own. You can say:

Quindi, usalo da solo. Puoi dire:

Let me give you some feedback.

lascia che ti fornisca un feedback.

Or:

Oppure:

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Okay! The next word is 'news'.

Is it countable or uncountable?

'News' is...

Uncountable!

You cannot say:

Non si può dire:

A news.

Una notizia.

So, don't say:

Quindi non dire:

That's a great news.

è un'ottima notizia.

Just say:

Dì solo:

That's great news.

You can pair news up with piece.

Puoi accoppiare le notizie con il pezzo.

You can say:

That's a great piece of news.

Now, be careful that when we talk about news on  the media, like on television or in the newspaper,

we don't say 'piece' we use the word 'item'.

An item of news. Or a news item.

The next word is...

'series'.

That's a tricky one.

È complicato.

Do you think it's countable or uncountable?

It's actually both.

In realtà è entrambe le cose.

You can put 'a' with it. Say:

Puoi mettere 'a' con esso. Dì:

A series.

una serie.

But, you can't make it plural. You can't say: serieses.

Ma non puoi renderlo plurale. Non puoi dire: serie.

So, the word 'series' is both singular and plural.

You can say:

This is an interesting series.

Or:

There are very few good series on television.

Okay! Let's look at coffee and tea.

They're both as well.

Let's look at them in their uncountable form.

In general, you would say:

I like black coffee.

Or:

Green tea is my favourite drink.

Oppure: il

But, they can also be countable when you go to order some.

Most people, instead of saying:

La maggior parte delle persone, invece di dire:

I'd like a cup of black coffee please.

Just say:

I'd like a black coffee please.

Or instead of saying:

O invece di dire:

Could we have two cups of green tea please.

They just say:

We'll have two green teas please.

So, they can be countable or uncountable.

Right! Let's look at 'software' and 'hardware'.

What do you think? Are they countable or uncountable?

They're definitely uncountable.

Avoid saying:

Software.

You may hear that, but it's not correct.

Use them as collective nouns. For example:

Usali come nomi collettivi. Ad esempio:

We need new software.

Or, you can  pair them up with countable words like:

Or, use the word piece again.

You can pair these two words up with peace.  For example:

These are great pieces of hardware.

Countable or uncountable?

Equipment is also uncountable.

So, avoid saying:

An equipment. Or: Equipments.

un'attrezzatura. Oppure: Attrezzature.

Use it in general:

Usalo in generale:

This is very old equipment.

questa è un'attrezzatura molto vecchia.

Or, pair it up with 'piece'.

Oppure abbinalo a "pezzo".

For example:

Ad esempio:

This printer is a very old piece of equipment.

Right! The next word is...

'research'.

"ricerca".

Countable or uncountable?

Numerabile o non numerabile?

It can be both.

Può essere entrambe le cose.

In British English, interestingly, it can be countable:

In inglese britannico, curiosamente, può essere numerabile:

Researches.

Researches.

But, it sounds so much like 'researchers' which, is the people who do research,

Ma suona così tanto come "ricercatori", ovvero le persone che fanno ricerche,

that I would recommend you avoid using it as a countable noun.

che ti consiglierei di evitare di usarlo come sostantivo numerabile.

Use it as an uncountable noun.

Usalo come sostantivo non numerabile.

You can pair it up with 'piece':

Puoi abbinarlo a 'piece':

A piece of research.

un pezzo di ricerca.

Or, you can say:

A research paper.

un documento di ricerca.

Or, you use the synonym:

Oppure usi il sinonimo:

A study.

And finally, our last word is...

'knowledge'.

'conoscenza'.

Is it countable or uncountable?

È numerabile o non numerabile?

That's a tricky one as well.

Anche questo è complicato.

It can be both.

Può essere entrambe le cose.

It can be countable or uncountable.

Può essere numerabile o non numerabile.

Now, generally we never say:

Ora, generalmente non diciamo mai:

A knowledge.

Una conoscenza.

Or: Knowledges.

Oppure: Conoscenze.

So, we use the expression, for example:

Quindi, usiamo l'espressione, ad esempio:

To my knowledge.

Per quanto ne so.

But, with an adjective, it suddenly becomes countable.

Ma, con un aggettivo, improvvisamente diventa numerabile.

So, you would say:

Quindi, diresti:

 I have a basic knowledge of german.

ho una conoscenza di base del tedesco.

Or:

She has a good knowledge of history.

Oppure:

Ha una buona conoscenza della storia.
