Common English Expressions with 'make' & 'do'

In today's lesson, we're going to look at two verbs that are easily confused with each other in English.

Nella lezione di oggi, esamineremo due verbi che si confondono facilmente tra loro in inglese.

These are 'make & 'do'. And we'll also look at some expressions and some phrasal verbs with these two verbs.

Questi sono 'make & 'do'. E vedremo anche alcune espressioni e alcuni verbi frasali con questi due verbi.

Now broadly speaking, and of course there are always some exceptions, 'make' has a sense of creating something.

Parlando in generale, e ovviamente ci sono sempre alcune eccezioni, 'make' ha il senso di creare qualcosa.

Something you do creates or generates something, and this can be something concrete or abstract.

Qualcosa che fai crea o genera qualcosa, e questo può essere qualcosa di concreto o astratto.

For example, you can make a chair or you can make coffee,

but you can also make a mistake. You can make an effort.

And if you use the verb 'make' with an adjective, it indicates changing something.

E se usi il verbo 'fare' con un aggettivo, indica cambiare qualcosa.

For example, making something possible or making something better.

Ad esempio, rendere possibile qualcosa o migliorare qualcosa.

'Do', on the other hand, has a sense of undertaking a process.

'Do', d'altra parte, ha il senso di intraprendere un processo.

For example, you do your shopping or you do your exercises.

Ad esempio, fai la spesa o fai i tuoi esercizi.

Now of course, you know that the verb 'do' is also an auxiliary verb used in the Present Simple and the Past Simple Tenses.
