Quit, quiet or quite - what’s the difference?

confidence, and freedom in English.

Today I wanna talk to you about the three words: quite, quiet, and quit.

'quite' as "I'm quite hungry right now".

'quiet' as in "Be quiet".

And 'quit' as in I "quit my job" or "Quit it".

All right, so all three words begin with 'kw'.

That's a K sound, and then a W sound.

So to make the W sound, bring your lips together.

As in the word 'wow'.

'w', 'kw'.

In the word 'quit', you shift from the 'kw' sound to an I as in 'sit': kwi.

So drop your jaw, keep space between the two teeth, and relax your lips: kwi.

And then it's a T sound, but it's a held T, so you barely hear it.

'quit'.

Or you make just a very subtle T at the end.

'quit'.

'quit'.

All right.

Now, then we have the word 'quiet' and 'quite'.

Let's take the word 'quite'.

It's the KW consonant cluster, and then the 'ai' sound, 'ai' as in 'mine',

and then another T: 'kwait', 'kwait'.

The word 'quiet' begins the same - 'kwai', but then you have another syllable.

It's a Y sound, a schwa - 'uh', and a T.

y't, y't.

So it's kwai-y't.

kwai-y't.

kwai-y't.

quite - quiet - quit.

"I quit my job".

"Be quiet".

And "I'm quite hungry".

quite - quiet - quit.
