A few moments ago, before I walked onstage,

I was aware that whichever story took hold

might impact the next 12 minutes of my life

and determine how this talk unfolds.

Therapists and psychologists tell us that the stories we tell ourselves

심리 치료사들과 정신과 의사들이 말하길 우리가 스스로에게 하는 이야기는

play a fundamental role in how we interact with the world around us.

우리가 주변 세상과 상호작용하는 방식에 근본적인 역할을 한다고 합니다.

Some people tell themselves that they are not enough.

어떤 사람들은 스스로에게 자기는 부족하다고 말합니다.

Other people tell themselves that they're impostors.

또 다른 사람들은 스스로에게 자기가 사기꾼이라고 말하죠.

And if you've ever seen the auditions of a television singing competition,

또 혹시 여러분이 텔레비전 노래 대회 오디션을 본 적 있으시다면

some people tell themselves they're a little better

than they actually are.

But apart from the individual stories we tell ourselves,

all of us are also taking part in larger, collective stories

우리 모두는 인간 종으로서 우리의 행동을 빚는

더 큰, 집단적인 이야기에 참여하고 있기도 합니다.

that shape our behavior as a species.

A collective story enables people in India to treat cows as sacred,

집단적인 이야기는 인도 사람들이 소를 신성하게 대하게 하는가 하면,

while people in America cram cows into feedlots.

미국 사람들이 소를 축사에 욱여넣게 만들기도 하죠.

Our internal and external worlds are full of stories

우리 내부와 외부의 세상은 우리의 행동을 빚어내는

that shape our behaviors.

이야기로 가득 차 있습니다.

Today, I want to talk about a collective story

오늘, 저는 집단적인 이야기에 대해 이야기하고 싶습니다.

that most people aren't even aware they're inhabiting.

대부분의 사람들이 자신이 그 속에서 살고 있는지도 모르는 이야기죠.

It is a collective story that tells us that human beings are separate

이 집단적인 이야기는 우리에게 말해줍니다.

인간은 자연과 분리되어 있으며

and superior to nature.

자연보다 우월하다고 말입니다.

It is a story that has taken us so close to the brink of an unimaginable crisis

이 이야기는 우릴 상상도 못할 위기의 벼랑 끝까지 너무도 가까이 데려가서

that our survival now depends on telling a new story.

우리의 생존은 이제 새로운 이야기를 하는 데에 달려 있습니다.

So ...

Once upon a time, in a land far away --

옛날 옛적에, 머나먼 땅에서

and right here, actually, on the lands that we're gathered today,

the majority of people on planet Earth

had a deep reverence and respect for nature.

They saw very little separation

between themselves and the world around them.

Many cultures saw nature as a giving parent.

The plants and the animals were their relatives.

Indigenous Australians saw themselves as custodians of the land,

while the ancient Chinese

considered themselves reverent guests of nature.

Even prominent figures of Rome, like Ovid and Seneca,

argued that mining shouldn't be permissible,

as it was too abusive to the natural world.

But then, things started to change.

A new craze called Christianity began to take hold.

Word spread that their one God sat above and outside nature,

and that God had made people in his own image

and given them dominion over the Earth.

"Sounds alright," said the people,

“괜찮은데?” 사람들이 말했습니다.

passing on the news to friends and relatives,

그 소식을 사람들과 친척들에게,

missionaries, kings.

"The world was made for the sake of man,

“세상은 인간을 위해서 만들어졌으니

that it may serve him,"

세상은 인간을 섬길지어다.”

said the bishop of Paris in the early 12th century.

12세기 초 파리의 주교가 말했죠.

The Christian craze had now infiltrated Europe

기독교 광풍은 이제 유럽을 침투했고

and was beginning its march into the Americas.

아메리카로 행진을 시작하고 있었죠.

"But wait, there's more,"

“잠깐, 그게 다가 아니야.”

said a couple of fancy-looking men in the early 1600s.

1600년대 초반 화려해 보이는 몇몇 남자들이 말했습니다.

They told the people that they were from the Scientific Revolution,

and that they could empower the people even further.

"We must hound nature in her wanderings,"

said the first man --

Francis Bacon, the father of modern science.

"We must find a way, at length, into her inner chambers.

We must reveal the secrets still locked in nature's bosom.

자연의 젖가슴에 아직도 갇혀있는 비밀을 드러내야 한다.

Make her your slave,

subdue her,

shake her to her foundations."

그녀를 토대까지 흔들어라.”

"Yes," said the men. "It sounds alright."

The second man then chimed in.

His name was René Descartes, the father of modern philosophy.

He confirmed to the people that, yes,

they were superior to nature

and added that animals were mindless machines to be mastered

and exploited at will.

"Well, that's a relief," said the people.

"Now, we don't have to feel so bad about whipping our oxen."

The influence of these two men,

coupled with the religious craze,

meant that nature was no longer seen as a living thing

to be revered and respected,

but instead as a machine to be manipulated for the benefits of mankind.

This was a new and exciting story

이는 새롭고 짜릿한 이야기였습니다.

that set free natural resources for humans to achieve social and economic progress,

천연 자원을 해방시켜 인간이 사회적 경제적 진보를 이룩하게 했죠.

even if obtained through violent and suppressive acts.

심지어 폭력적이고 억압적인 행위를 통해서 얻은 것이라고 해도요.

This new story was particularly enticing to the emerging capitalists of the time,

이 새로운 이야기는 특히 당시 신흥 자본가들을 사로잡았습니다.

because a nature devoid of reverence and respect

왜냐하면 경외와 존경이 결여된 자연은

was much easier to commodify.

상품화하기가 훨씬 더 쉬웠기 때문이죠.

And commodify they did.

그래서 그들은 자연을 상품화했습니다.

The humans went to work,

인간은 일하러 가서

entering and penetrating all of those inner chambers.

그 모든 깊숙한 밀실에 들어가고 침투했죠.

They tunneled her bosom for coal and metals,

they scraped and plowed over her skin with their tractors.

They took chain saws to her forests of follicles,

and they filled her waters with their waste.

The new story had spread across the globe.

Humans had asserted their dominance,

they built wondrous things

and improved the lives of billions of people,

수십억 사람들의 삶을 개선했습니다.

particularly in specific regions.

특히 일부 지역에 한해서 말이죠.

Until one day ...

그러던 어느날...

their scientists began to notice.

그들의 과학자들이 뭔가 눈치채기 시작했습니다.

"Her animals are decreasing."

“그녀의 동물들이 줄어들고 있다.”

"Her atmosphere is heating."

“그녀의 대기가 데워지고 있다.”

"The soils are eroding."

“그녀의 땅이 깎이고 있다.”

"Our research is foreboding."

“우리의 연구는 불길한 조짐을 보인다.”

But still, the humans carried on.

그래도 여전히, 인간은 계속했죠.

You see, they couldn't hear the scientists,

보시다시피, 그들은 과학자들의 말을 듣지 못했습니다.

because the facts don't matter much if they don't fit the story.

왜냐하면 그 이야기에 들어맞지 않으면 사실은 그다지 중요하지 않거든요.

And the story was deeply embedded now.

In 2019, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency in the US

opposes regulations because, he says,

"We have a responsibility to harvest

the natural resources that we've been blessed with."

A prominent evangelist tells his followers

that refusing to use fossil fuels hurts God's feelings.

화석 연료를 쓰기 거부하는 것은 신의 마음을 아프게 하는 거라고요.

The story was so embedded

이 이야기는 너무도 뿌리박혀 있어서

that the humans' nightly news bulletins measured their success

인간들은 야간 뉴스 속보에서 자신들의 성공을

by financial metrics alone,

재정적인 단위로만 측정하기에 이르렀습니다.

while the living world that allowed the gains in those metrics

한편 그런 지표로 얻은 이득을 허락해준 살아있는 세계는

was being eviscerated out of sight.

시야 밖으로 사라지고 말았습니다.

And the story was so embedded

그 이야기는 너무도 뿌리박혀 있어서

that when researchers looked at the names of trees, birds, flowers

연구자들이 나무와 새와 꽃들의 이름들과

and other keywords relating to nature,

자연과 관련된 다른 키워드들이

used across millions of books, songs and movies,

1900년에서 2014년까지

from 1900 to 2014 ...

수백만 편의 책, 노래, 영화에 쓰인 걸 찾았을 때

they found a dramatic decline in the use of those words

그들이 알아낸 건 그러한 단어들의 사용이 그 기간 동안

across that period.

극적으로 감소했다는 겁니다.

The humans were spending seven hours a day on their screens.

인간은 화면을 보면서 하루에 일곱 시간을 쓰고 있습니다.

So not only were they experiencing

그래서 인간은 자연에 대한 이야기와

fewer stories and actual experiences of nature ...

자연을 실제로 경험할 기회가 줄어들 뿐만 아니라

but they were being bombarded by up to 10,000 advertisements a day,

그들은 하루에 최대 만 건의 광고로 융단폭격을 받고 있으며

largely for products that are inflicting even more ecological damage.

그 광고들의 대다수는 생태계에 더 많은 손상을 입히는 제품들을 위한 거죠.

Nature was being hounded in her wanderings.

And yet, the humans remain trapped in their story.

그렇지만, 인간은 자신들의 이야기에 여전히 갇혀 있죠.

Trapped in their cultural programming ...

자신들의 문화적 계획에 갇혀서...

like goldfish in a tank,

마치 수조 속의 금붕어처럼,

unaware of the unfolding chaos beyond the colored pebbles

알록달록한 조약돌과 인조 나무토막 뒤에서

and the artificial logs.

펼쳐지는 혼돈도 모른 채로요.

So when those same scientists resorted to blocking traffic

그래서 이를 알린 과학자들은 교통을 차단하고,

and tying themselves to poles

or screaming that the Amazon rainforest,

the most spectacular of all her forests,

was nearing a tipping point that would turn her into a savanna ...

사바나로 바뀌게 될 기로에 서 있다고 외칠 수밖에 없었습니다.

still, the humans did nothing.

여전히, 인간은 아무것도 하지 않았죠.

Because to them, those trees ...

왜냐하면 그들에겐, 그 나무들은...

those trees that were home to thousands of species of animals

수천 종의 동물들과 수백만 종의 곤충들에게

and millions of species of insects,

보금자리였던 그 나무들은,

those trees that sent nutrients to each other

땅 밑의 균사체를 통해

via underground fungal networks ...

영양소를 서로 주고받던 그 나무들은,

those trees that transpired moisture into the air to create rainfall

수분을 공기 중으로 증산시켜 빗물을 만들어서

that would feed crops in countries thousands of kilometers away ...

수천 킬로미터 떨어진 나라에 있는 작물들에게 물을 대줬던 그 나무들은,

those trees were just ...

그 나무들은 그저...

timber for decking.

마룻바닥용 목재일 뿐이었거든요.

Pulp for toilet paper.

화장실 휴지용 펄프일 뿐이었죠.

Or space for more cows.

아니면 소를 더 많이 키울 자리일 뿐이었던 거예요.

Those trees were worth more dead than alive ...

그 나무들은 살아있는 것보다 죽어서 더 쓸모 있었던 겁니다.

because that's what the story had told them.

왜냐하면 그게 이 이야기가 그들에게 말해준 것이기 때문이죠.

But then, something remarkable happened.

그러던 어느날, 놀라운 일이 벌어졌습니다.

It started with the children,

어린이들이 시작한 일이었죠.

who began to skip school and take to the streets.

아이들이 학교를 빠지고 거리로 나가기 시작했습니다.

It started with the farmers who chose to stop fighting nature

농부들이 시작한 일이었습니다.

그들은 자연과 싸우기를 그만두고

and instead rebuild their soils.

대신에 그들의 토양을 재건하기로 했죠.

It started when the Indigenous people,

원주민들이 시작한 일이었습니다.

who, for centuries, had been reminding everybody of their story,

그들은 모두에게 그들의 이야기를 지난 수 세기 동안 일깨워왔는데

were finally being listened to.

마침내 사람들이 그 이야기를 듣기 시작한 거예요.

And it started when nature herself,

또 자연 그 자신이 시작한 일이기도 합니다.

through fires and storms,

through droughts and rising waters,

forced her way back into the people's lives

and demanded their respect.

A new, regenerative story about human beings and nature

was emerging.

But of course, it wasn't a new story at all.

It was the retelling of an old story.

옛 이야기를 다시 들려주는 거였죠.

But this time,

그런데 이번엔,

the old story was supported by the science.

그 옛 이야기가 과학에 의해 뒷받침됐습니다.

And it was telling the people

그 이야기는 사람들에게 말하길

that every breath they took was dependent on trees

사람이 쉬는 모든 숨은 나무와 식물성 플랑크톤에

and phytoplankton,

의존하고 있으며,

And that trillions of bacteria and fungi lived on them and in them

사람 몸 표면과 몸속에 사는 수조 마리의 박테리아와 균류들이

and kept them alive.

사람을 살아있게 해준다는 거예요.

Viewing the natural world as separate to humans

자연계를 인간과 분리해서 보는 관점은 옳지 않다고 경험적으로 밝혀졌습니다.

was now empirically false.

Humans are nature.

인간이 곧 자연입니다.

But the science was also telling them that plants could see,

하지만 과학이 또 말해주는 건 식물은 볼 수도 있고

they could smell, hear ...

냄새 맡고 들을 수도 있으며

they could learn and store memories.

배우고 기억할 수도 있다는 겁니다.

That dolphins gossiped and spoke in local dialects,

돌고래들이 가십거리를 이야기하고 지역 방언으로 말하며,

elephants held ceremonies for dead relatives,

코끼리는 죽은 친척을 위해 장례식을 치르고,

grasshoppers could turn into locusts and back again in a matter of hours,

메뚜기들은 메뚜기 떼가 됐다가

단 몇 시간 만에 다시 원래대로 돌아가고,

and that termites had built an underground metropolis

흰개미들이 영국 크기의 지하 대도시를

the size of the United Kingdom.

건설했다는 겁니다.

The same scientific inquiry that had led to domination and extraction

지배와 착취를 이끌어 온 바로 그 과학적 탐구가

had gone so deep into nature's bosom that it was revealing her secrets.

자연의 젖가슴 속으로 너무도 깊숙이 파고든 나머지

그녀의 비밀들을 밝혀내고야 말았습니다.

And her secrets were divulging that she was anything but mechanistic.

또 그녀의 비밀들은 자연이 결코 기계적 존재가 아님을 폭로하고 있었죠.

That she was deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.

자연은 최고의 경외와 존경을 받을 자격이 있다는 것과

And that the original story had been right all along.

또 원래의 이야기가 늘 옳았었다는 것도요.

And so perhaps now,

그래서 어쩌면 이제,

the humans would no longer refer to nature as an unruly female to be tamed

인간은 더 이상 자연을 길들여야 할 제멋대로인 여성이나

or an "it" to be exploited ...

착취해야할 “것”으로 지칭하는 대신에

but would refer to nature simply ...

이렇게 지칭해야 할 것입니다.

as kin.

“동족“.

Nobody knows how this new but old story ends

이 새롭지만 오래된 이야기가 어떻게 끝날지는 아무도 모릅니다.

because it is still being written.

왜냐하면 그 이야기는 아직도 쓰여지고 있기 때문이죠.

But if it is to have the Hollywood ending,

하지만 그 이야기가 할리우드식 결말을 가지려면,

if we are to break free from our cultural programming

우리가 우리의 문화적 계획에서 벗어나

and pull off the miraculous comeback when all seems lost,

모든 걸을 잃은 것 같을 때 기적적인 귀환을 해내려면,

then the new but old story will have to be rapidly spread throughout the culture.

It will need to be embedded into all levels of curriculum,

particularly at the early stages,

so children can see the world as a living system,

not as a machine full of stocks and commodities.

It will need to inform a redesign of the economy,

so it values nature

자연을 가치롭게 여기고

and reflects the true environmental costs of the materials we all use.

우리 모두가 사용하는 물질들의 진정한 환경 비용을 반영해야 합니다.

It will need to revamp the nightly news bulletins

그 이야기는 야간 뉴스 속보를 개편해서

so we'd measure soil health, atmospheric pollution, species loss

우리가 토양 건강, 대기 오염 그리고 종 손실률을

alongside the financial metrics.

재무 지표와 더불어 측정하게 해야 합니다.

And crucially,

또 결정적으로,

the new but old story will need to be amplified

이 새롭지만 오래된 이야기를 더 크게 들려주려면

by the storytellers.

The musicians, the artists,

those that can create the emotional connection

to the living world once again,

and paint visions of a nature-filled future

that people can see and feel and strive for.

Because stories shape culture.

Culture shapes leaders,

문화는 지도자를 빚어내고,

leaders shape policies, and policies shape the system.

지도자는 정책을 빚어내며, 정책이 시스템을 빚어냅니다.

And perhaps,

또 어쩌면,

just perhaps, one day ...

단지 어쩌면, 언젠가는...

a few hundred years from now ...

지금으로부터 수백 년 뒤엔...

historians will look back to this moment, and they'll see that,

역사가들이 이 순간을 되돌아보며

이 혼돈과 허무주의와 공포와 멸종의 한 가운데에

amongst the chaos and the nihilism and the fear and the extinctions

that there were groups of people who chose to turn the page

책장을 넘기기를 택한 여러 사람들이 있었고

and begin to write a new chapter for humanity.

그들이 인류를 위한 새 장(章)을 쓰기 시작했다는 걸 보게 되겠죠.

A chapter full of diverse characters, from a range of professions and places,

who came together

함께 모여서

to create a thriving,

번성하고

regenerative,

재생적이며

ecological future.

생태적인 미래를 창조할 것입니다.
