I love nursing.

However, often when I speak about innovation

I’m met with:

And it's understandable.

Innovation in technology within the health care sector

의료 분야의 기술 혁신은 무척 빨리 성장하고 있습니다.

is growing really fast.

And sometimes it can be a little bit difficult to keep up

때로는 신기술의 발전 속도를 따라가기 어려울 정도죠.

with the new technologies.

And now, as a new professional within the field,

간호 분야의 신입 전문가인 저는

I'm slowly starting to relate a little bit more to this response.

이런 반응을 보이는 사람들에 천천히 공감하고 있습니다.

Us nurses are already really busy.

우리 간호사는 이미 몹시 바쁩니다.

We're not offered the opportunity to innovate,

혁신을 시도할 기회도 없고

and quite frankly, we're not paid enough.

솔직히 급여도 넉넉하지 않죠.

However,

하지만,

if we could change this attitude of innovation earlier on,

혁신을 대하는 자세를

간호 교육을 하는 초기부터 바꿀 수 있다면

during nursing education,

I believe we could have our future nurses innovate

미래의 간호 분야에서 혁신을 일으켜

in a way to improve the working quality for health care professionals,

간호 전문가가 처리하는 업무의 질을 높이고

which in turn will improve patient care.

환자 간호도 개선할 수 있습니다.

This is the key to making our future nurses the stakeholders

이는 미래 간호사를 앞으로의 간호분야 발전의

within the future development of the health care system.

당사자로 육성하는 핵심입니다.

So what is innovation?

그러면 혁신이란 무엇일까요?

It's a bit of an ambiguous word

의미가 막연하기 때문에

that can mean a lot of different things to many different people.

사람마다 천차만별로 다르게 받아들이는 단어입니다.

But simply put, innovation is looking at a problem,

하지만 쉽게 생각해서 혁신이란

문제를 보고 이해하고 개선하는 것입니다.

understanding it and trying to make it better.

And if you make it better, that's innovation.

무언가를 개선한다면, 그게 바로 혁신입니다.

Innovation can be applied to something which already exists,

혁신은 이미 있는 것에도 적용할 수 있고

or it can be used to develop something completely new.

완전히 새로운 것을 개발하는 데에도 활용할 수 있습니다.

But before we go deeper into this topic,

이 주제를 더 깊게 다루기에 앞서

let me tell you all a story

제가 오늘 이 자리에 나온 계기를 알려드릴까 합니다.

which inspired me to have this speech here today.

When I started my final internship for my nursing studies at the end of 2020,

2020년 말에 간호 교육의 마지막 인턴십을 시작했는데

I had an interview with the ward manager on the first day.

첫날에 병동 관리자와 면담을 했습니다.

One of the questions which she asked me was,

관리자가 물어본 질문 중에 이런 게 있었죠.

"So, Ben, where do you see yourself going in the next five to 10 years?"

“5년, 10년 뒤에는 어떤 일을 하고 있을 것 같나요?”

Honestly, I had to think about it for a little while.

사실 대답에 조금 시간이 걸렸습니다.

And then I told her,

저는 이렇게 말했죠.

"Well, to be honest, I don't think I can be a nurse forever.

“솔직하게 말씀드리면 평생 간호사를 할 수는 없다고 봅니다.

It's really hard work.

너무 힘든 직업이에요.

Like, really, really hard.

몸과 마음 모두 정말 정말로 힘들죠.

Both physically and emotionally.

But I am passionate about health care

하지만 저는 간호 분야를 좋아하니까

and would love to pursue a future career in health care innovation and technology."

앞으로 간호 혁신과 기술에 관련된 직업을 갖고자 합니다.”

And yes, I know some you might think it’s a little bit strange for a near-graduate

졸업을 앞둔 사람이 인턴십 첫날부터

to be planning on leaving his career on the first day of his internship.

직장을 떠날 계획을 한다는 게 조금 이상해 보이겠죠.

And, you know what she said?

대답은 뭐였냐면, 이렇게 말했습니다.

Well, she said,

"Oh, I see.

“아, 그렇군요.

I'm not too sure about this whole innovation thing.

저는 이 혁신이라는 게 썩 믿음이 가지는 않아요.

I'm not really a big fan."

별로 좋아하지 않습니다.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa, OK.

‘와, 와, 그렇군요.’

I was taken aback.

정말 놀랐죠.

See, that's what I wanted to do.

그건 제가 하고 싶었던 일이었습니다.

The egotistical part of me wanted to say,

속에서는 이렇게 말하고 싶었습니다.

“What do you mean, you don’t like innovation?

“혁신을 싫어한다고요?

간호 전문가의 수준 개선을 바라지 않는다고요?

You don't want to improve the working quality for health care professionals,

환자가 더 나은 간호를 받을 수 있는데도요?”

which, in turn, will improve patient care?”

Well, I didn't say that, obviously.

물론 입 밖에 내지는 않았습니다.

Instead, I asked her one simple question.

대신 짧게 질문을 하나 했죠.

And that was:

이렇게요.

"Why?"

“왜요?”

And what she told me gave me the biggest light-bulb moment.

이 질문에 대한 답에서 저는 큰 깨달음을 얻었습니다.

She said,

그 대답은...

“Well, too often a businessperson or an engineer comes to me

“혁신적인 아이디어나 신기술을 제안하는

with a new technology or innovative idea.

사업가나 엔지니어가 아주 많습니다.

And more often than not, it's not very user-friendly,

꽤 많은 경우에 시스템이 사용하기 불편하거나

or it just adds more to our workload."

그저 업무 부담만 늘 뿐이었죠.”

OK.

대답을 듣고는 생각에 빠졌습니다.

So I'm standing there and I'm thinking,

Ding!

아하!

This is the moment that I realized that there's a huge disconnect

간호 분야에서 개발자와 현장 간에 있는

between the developer and the end user within the health care sector.

커다란 간극을 이해한 순간이었습니다.

In fact, this isn't the first time I've gotten this kind of response.

사실, 이런 대답을 들은 것이 처음은 아니었습니다.

Throughout my studies and now my career,

학창 시절부터 이제 직장을 다니면서

I've often recognized that there's a bit of a frustration factor

신기술이나 새로운 절차가 도입될 때마다

whenever new technologies or processes are introduced.

불만이었던 때가 자주 있었습니다.

So on our days full of making reports,

저희는 하루 종일 보고서를 쓰고

taking patients' vitals,

환자 상태를 확인하고 의사, 물리치료사, 가족들과 소통하고

communicating with doctors, physiotherapists, family members,

taking patients' vitals again and charting

환자 상태를 또 확인하고 기록하고, 어휴, 빠뜨린 게 뭐 있나요?

and God, am I forgetting something?

Well, that's honestly on a good day.

이것도 괜찮은 날일 때 말이죠.

But most of the time we're covering for our colleagues

너무 지쳐버린 동료가 병가를 내서 업무를 대신 봐줘야 하기 일쑤이고

who are away on sick leave due to burnout,

병원 측에서는 비용을 절감하기 위해 행정 업무까지 추가로 맡깁니다.

taking on extra administrative roles

because hospitals are trying to save money.

And answering call bells.

또 알람이 울리면 뛰어가야죠.

하아, 알람...

The call bells.

Especially to independent patients

특히 혼자 움직일 수 있는 환자인데

who all of a sudden can't do anything for themselves anymore.

갑작스럽게 혼자서는 아무것도 할 수 없다는 환자들이 있습니다.

So if there's anybody out there who knows a nurse,

아는 사람 중에 간호사가 있다면,

which most of you probably do,

여러분들 대개 있겠죠,

go ahead and ask them to share a story with you about call bells

만나서 이런 환자들이나 알람 얘기를 물어보세요.

and these kinds of patients.

They’re often quite amusing, but at the time,

꽤 재밌는 일도 많지만 때로는 너무 절망적입니다.

oh, so frustrating.

So, yeah,

네, 그러니,

adding a new technology or process on top of all of this,

여기에 신기술이나 새로운 절차를 추가한다면,

especially when going through beta stage flaws,

특히 시험 운영에서 생기는 문제를 겪을 때면

only adds on to the headache.

골치만 더 아파질 뿐이죠.

And you see, nursing is changing.

간호 분야는 변화하고 있습니다.

It's not the same that it was 20 to 30 years ago.

20년, 30년 전과는 다릅니다.

Neither is the health care system,

간호 분야와 달리 교육은 따라오지 못하는 것 같습니다.

and it seems like education has not quite caught up.

A lot of new technologies are being introduced

신기술이 많이 도입됐지만

and most of nurses' time still being spent completing mundane and repetitive tasks.

여전히 간호사들은 대부분 시간을 지루하고 반복적인 업무 처리에 씁니다.

In addition to this, we're seeing an aging population,

이에 더해서 인구가 노령화됨에 따라

we're seeing an increase in the cost of care,

간호 비용은 증가하고 환자들의 요구는 더 늘어나며

patients' needs are more demanding

간호 인력은 부족해집니다.

and a shortage in health care staff.

However, we could have these repetitive and mundane tasks of charting

하지만 차트를 기록하는 반복적이고 따분한 업무는

aided by AI and technologies as small as a ring taking patient's vitals.

인공 지능의 도움을 받거나

환자 상태를 파악하는 작은 반지 같은 기술로 대체할 수 있습니다.

This would hopefully leave more time for nurses to communicate

이 덕분에 간호사는 환자의 응대와

and provide care for their patients,

간호에 시간을 더 쏟을 수 있을 것이고

but also give them an opportunity to solve problems within their organizations.

조직 내의 문제를 해결할 기회도 가져다 줄 것입니다.

In fact, the World Health Organization estimates

사실 세계 보건 기구에서 추산한 바에 따르면

that by 2030

2030년에는

there's going to be a global health care shortage

전 세계적으로 의료계는

with nine million those being nursing-specific.

간호 분야에서 900만 명이 부족할 것이라고 합니다.

This is caused by experienced nurses coming towards their retirement,

숙련 간호사가 은퇴하는 것도 원인이고

a poor retention rate of new professionals

신입 간호사들이 금방 이직하는 것과

and less people entering the field altogether.

간호사를 하려는 사람이 감소하는 것도 원인입니다.

It's not looking very good.

아주 좋지 않은 상황입니다.

So we're at a point now where we can no longer wait

지금 시점에서는 간호 분야에서

and see if these advancements will happen in the health care sector.

발전이 이루어지기를 마냥 기다릴 수 없습니다.

We’re at a point now where these advancements, technologies have to happen.

지금은 발전이 이루어지고 기술이 도입돼야 하는 시점입니다.

But who are the ones

그런데 진전을 이루고 기술 도입을 주도해야 할 사람은 누구일까요?

who should be driving these advancements and technologies?

Well, the answer is, frontline health care workers, nurses.

정답은 간호 현장에서 일하는 사람, 즉, 간호사입니다.

We're the ones who have been using all of the technologies

간호사들은 지금까지 도입된 기술을 모두 써왔습니다.

which have been introduced thus far.

기술들을 매일 같이 쓰면서 문제가 되는 부분을 파악하고

We work with them every day, see where their flaws are,

어떻게 개선하면 좋을지에 대해 좋은 생각이 있는 사람도 있죠.

and some of us might have pretty good ideas on how to make them better.

But most importantly,

하지만 가장 중요한 것은

us nurses are the ones who truly understand

간호사의 업무 중 어떤 부분을

what aspects of our jobs can be replaced with future technologies.

미래 기술로 대체할 수 있을지는

우리, 간호사가 정확히 이해하고 있다는 점입니다.

If we can combine

둘을 합칠 수 있다면,

the frontline experience of nurses

즉, 간호사가 접하는 현장의 경험과

with the innovative approaches of businesspeople and engineers,

사업가나 기술자의 혁신을 접목할 수 있다면

just imagine

얼마나 개선할 수 있을지 그려보세요.

the improvements we could see.

We could actually start solving the problems nurses face every day

개발 단계에 최종 사용자인 간호사를 포함함으로써

by including them, the end user,

간호사들이 매일 마주치는 문제를 실질적으로 해결할 수 있게 되죠.

within the development phase.

So that comes now to my main question.

이제 제 핵심 질문에 다가갑니다.

How do we solve this multi-dimensional issue?

여러 방면에 걸친 이 문제를 어떻게 해결해야 할까요?

It is quite a big one.

꽤 어려운 문제입니다.

Well, a good start would be by looking into our education system.

교육 체계를 손보는 것이 좋은 출발점이겠죠.

From my experience, going through my bachelor degree in nursing,

간호학과에서 학사 과정을 밟고 있는 제 경험상

they take a bunch of nursing students

많은 간호학과 학생들은

where a nurse in the front of the class teaches them about nursing.

간호사가 직접 강단에 나와 가르치는 간호 수업을 듣습니다.

And it makes sense.

합리적입니다.

But what this does is it creates a nursing bubble within the university,

하지만 이런 방법으로는 대학 내에 간호 수업이 갇히고

and sometimes it can be a little bit difficult

때로는 그 벽을 뚫기가 조금 어려워지기도 합니다.

to penetrate through that barrier.

What it does is it narrows your path

이런 수업 방법이라면 학생의 시야가 좁아질 뿐입니다.

to where what you learn is only useful for that profession

전문 분야 자체에 대해서는 유용한 것을 배울 수 있어도

without exploration and problem solving within the industry.

간호계 내의 문제를 해결하거나 영역을 확장하기는 어렵습니다.

학사 과정을 밟는 학생으로서

As a nursing student going through a bachelor's degree,

you're merely handed the tools and taught how to use them.

그저 간호 장비를 건네받고 사용법을 배울 뿐입니다.

There's very little emphasis on being able to look at that tool and thinking,

간호 장비를 보고 이런 생각을 하는 것은 거의 관심이 없습니다.

"Aha, this would work much better if it was made like this."

‘아하, 이건 이렇게 만들면 훨씬 낫겠는데!’

And here's the thing.

중요한 점은 이겁니다.

Universities are networking havens.

대학은 사회관계를 꾸리기 좋은 곳이죠.

We're literally working in establishments

글자 그대로 다양한 분야에서 온 사람들과 일합니다.

where we have people working on business and marketing,

사업과 마케팅, IT, 기술, 디자인, 문화, 의료 서비스.

IT, engineering, design, culture, health care.

And that is only the tip of the iceberg.

제가 말한 건 극히 일부에 불과하죠.

As a student,

학생 때,

I was lucky enough to be a part of a group

제가 함께한 사람들은 운 좋게도

who were really keen on extracurricular innovation projects.

과외로 하는 혁신적인 프로젝트에 정말 열심이었습니다.

We had a diverse group of students,

다양한 학생이 모였었죠.

myself a nurse, two industrial designers,

저는 간호학과, 두 명은 산업 디자인과였고

a cultural manager and a health tech engineer.

다른 두 명은 문화 관리와 의료 기술 엔지니어였죠.

This experience taught me so much about the importance of networking

이때의 경험으로 사회관계의 중요성을 절실히 깨달았고

and how to work within a multi-professional team.

여러 분야의 전문가가 모인 팀에서 일하는 법을 배웠습니다.

And I couldn’t help but think

그리고 이런 생각을 할 수 밖에 없었습니다.

that every single student should have an opportunity like this

’모든 학생은 빠짐없이 이런 경험을 할 기회를 갖고

and solve real-life problems.

실생활의 문제를 해결해 봐야 한다.′

But most importantly,

하지만 제일 중요한 것은

it showed me that we needed each other to make this project become alive.

과제를 진행하려면 모두가 필요함을 보여줬다는 점이죠.

During the same time,

과제를 진행하면서 비영리 단체도 설립했습니다.

we also established a nonprofit

which looked at enriching the innovative and entrepreneurial culture

대학생을 대상으로 혁신과 기업 문화의 질을 높이고자 했죠.

amongst the university students.

I was lucky to have an experience like this,

저는 운이 좋았기 때문에 이런 경험을 할 수 있었습니다.

and I should acknowledge

저는 인정할 수밖에 없습니다.

that there are the beginnings of innovation education

간호 분야에 혁신 교육이 시작되었지만

within nursing studies,

but it's at its infancy stage

태동기이고 교실에서 중요하게 여겨지지 않습니다.

and not held as a priority within the classroom.

So if there's any nursing educators out there,

간호 교육에 종사하는 분들에게,

in fact, all educators who aren't already doing this, is to --

특히 이런 교육 방법을 아직 실천하지 않는 분들에게

요청드릴 것이 하나 있다면

if there's one thing I would like to ask

is that you let your students out of that bubble.

학생들에게 다양한 기회를 주셨으면 하는 겁니다.

Make them professionally mix and match, interact, network

학생들을 체계적으로 조합하여 교류하고, 사회관계를 맺게 하고

and work on projects with students going through different courses

대학 내 다른 학과 학생들과 활동을 하도록 해주세요.

within your university.

From my experience in the projects that I did with my colleagues,

대학 친구들과 함께 과제를 한 경험으로 미루어

I can see a huge benefit in this kind of cross-course collaboration.

학과 간의 협업으로 얻을 수 있는 장점이 엄청나다고 봅니다.

What might come out of it can be truly special,

그런 경험에서 나오는 것은 정말로 특별한 것이 될 수 있고

and the connections you get from them can last a lifetime.

이때 맺은 사회관계는 평생 갈 수 있습니다.

Now, when you really think about it,

이런 점을 곰곰이 생각해보면

how can we develop easily adoptable technologies for nurses

여러 분야의 전문가들과

함께 일하는 방법을 배울 기회조차 없다면

if we never get a chance to learn how to really sit down

간호 분야에 쉽게 접목할 수 있는 기술을 어떻게 개발할 수 있을까요?

and work within a multi-professional team?

So in our future careers as health care professionals,

간호 전문가로서 우리는 앞으로

when we come across a potential problem,

잠재적인 문제에 맞닥트렸을 때

we can draw from those past experiences and networks we gained as students

학생 시절에 쌓았던 사회관계와 과거의 경험에서 정보를 얻고

to at least get started with innovation process.

적어도 혁신을 시작할 수는 있을 것입니다.

Now there are many barriers nurses and health tech developers face

간호사와 의료 기술 개발자가 겪게 되는 장애물이

간호 분야에 산재해 있습니다.

within the health care sector.

Educating our nurses about innovation

간호사에게 혁신을 교육하고

and what's to come in the future of the health care system,

간호 분야에 앞으로 닥칠 일을 가르쳐서

we can slowly start to make them the stakeholders within the strategy.

그들을 이 전략의 당사자로 만드는 일을 천천히 시작해야 합니다.

However, education is not an end-all solution.

하지만 교육이 모든 것을 해결하는 것은 아닙니다.

The solution lies in a more integrative approach where education, technology,

해결책은 더 종합적으로 접근해야 합니다.

교육과 기술, 관리, 리더십, 법률, 재정,

governance, leadership, laws, finances are all taken into consideration.

모든 것을 고려해야 합니다.

But these are all entire TEDx Talks in themselves

하지만 이들은 모두 각각 TEDx 강연에서 다룰 만한 주제이고

and outside of my personal experience.

제가 경험해보지 못한 것들이죠.

So if there's anybody out there listening who's an expert within the field,

그러니 여기에 간호 분야의 전문가가 계신다면

I would like to invite somebody to come up here

and speak about how we can start solving these issues.

because time is seriously starting to run out.

And now, for myself as a new professional within the field,

that is that if you’re a start-up, innovator, businessperson, engineer

or anybody working on a health care-related technology or service,

is to get in contact with the nurse.

간호사와 이야기를 나눠보라는 것입니다.

간호사에게 제품이나 서비스를

필요에 맞게 개선할 방법을 물어보세요.

to suit our needs better.

정말로 돕고 싶습니다.

Trust me, we want to help.

That's kind of why we're nurses to begin with.

도움을 주는 것이야말로 애초에 간호사가 된 이유니까요.

And while I'm on the topic,

I would also like to encourage nurses and students to get more involved.

더 많이 참여했으면 좋겠습니다.

Find like-minded people in societies.

비슷한 생각이 있는 사람을 근처에서 찾아보세요.

These might be part of the hospital you're working for

or within your local university.

And if you have a business or innovation idea, share it.

There are health care-related hackathons, incubators

Now, studies have shown

연구 결과에 따르면

that innovation empowers nurses

혁신이 간호사에게 도움 되는 경우는

when it looks at ways of improving patient care,

환자가 받는 간호와 의료 기술, 절차를 개선하고자 할 때였습니다.

technologies and processes.

However, this is only possible with financial support,

하지만 재정 지원이 있어야만 가능하죠.

health care leaders promoting an environment

지적 창의성을 고취하는 환경을 북돋는 의료 서비스 리더가 필요합니다.

where intellectual creativity is promoted

and employees get the recognition and prestige that they deserve.

직원들이 인정받고 합당한 대우를 받는 환경이 있어야 합니다.

However.

하지만,

Time and time again,

같은 문제가 반복됩니다.

when I've spoken to nurses as a student

제가 학생 때 간호사에게 말했었고 전문가인 지금도 말하지만

and now as a professional,

it seems like there's something preventing nurses from achieving this.

간호사가 혁신을 이루는 것을 방해하는 무언가가 있는 것 같습니다.

There's something fundamentally preventing nurses from innovating more.

근본적으로 간호사가 더 이상의 혁신을 하지 못하게 하는 무언가가 존재합니다.

Well, nurses are overworked,

간호사는 혹사 당하고

burning out, underpaid,

탈진하고, 급여도 적고

often unappreciated with their own organizations,

자신이 속한 조직에서 인정받지 못할 때도 많습니다.

especially within the public sector.

특히 공공 부문에서 그렇죠.

But most importantly,

하지만 가장 중요한 점은

we aren't offered the opportunity to truly demonstrate our potential.

저희의 가능성을 증명할 기회조차 없었다는 것입니다.

Now, as AI and technologies assume many tasks

이제,

인공 지능과 기술이 간호사의 업무 중 많은 부분을 맡게 될 가까운 미래에

of nurses in the near future,

we need to educate and facilitate our future nurses

미래의 간호사를 교육하고 육성하여

to be the stakeholders

간호 체계의 향후 발전에 당사자가 되도록 해야 합니다.

within the future development of the health care system.

Our future nurses will be the health care information integrators,

미래의 간호사는 간호 정보를 통합하여

health care consultants, health coaches

간호 과정을 상담하고 관리하며

and providers of human care,

전인적인 관리를 제공할 것이며

supported by these technologies and AI,

기술과 AI에 대체되는 것이 아니라 이들의 보조를 받을 것입니다.

not replaced by them.

After all ...

무엇보다도...

One of the first human interactions you have in life

태어나서 처음으로 만나는 사람은

is with a nurse in the maternity ward.

분만실의 간호사입니다.

And one of your last will be with a nurse by your bedside.

여러분의 마지막에도 간호사가 곁에 있을 테죠.

The way we support our nurses in society is a choice.

사회에서 간호사를 어떻게 지원할지는 선택입니다.

So please help us nurses

저희 간호사를 도와주세요.

so we can help you innovate.

그래야 저희가 혁신을 도울 수 있습니다.

Let's build a better future together.

함께 더 나은 미래를 만들어 나갑시다.
