Describing Price or Cost as Affordable, Inexpensive, Expensive, Cheap | Learn English Vocabulary

And in this video, we're going to talk about  how to describe the cost or price of something. 

At sa video na ito,

pag-uusapan natin

kung paano ilarawan ang halaga o presyo ng isang bagay.

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right. 

Ngayon, ito ay mahalaga sa mga taong tulad ko

na mahilig mag-shopping, di ba.

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses. 

Kaya, halimbawa,

gusto kong mamili lalo na para sa mga damit.

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable. 

Kaya masasabi kong abot-kaya ang halaga ng damit na ito.

Okay. This dress is affordable. 

Sige.

Affordable ang damit na ito.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive. 

Ang ibig sabihin ng 'affordable'

ay hindi masyadong mahal ang damit na ito.

I have enough money and I can pay for this dress. I have enough money. 

Mayroon akong sapat na pera

at maaari kong bayaran ang damit na ito.

Mayroon akong sapat na pera.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable. 

Mabibili ko itong damit.

So I would say,

affordable ang damit na ito.

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say  

Masasabi ko rin,

ang damit na ito ay mura.

Alam naman nating lahat kung ano ang mahal

pero sabi natin mura

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive. 

kaya kabaliktaran yan ng mahal.

‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  have very similar meanings. 

Ang 'abot-kaya' at 'mura'

ay may magkatulad na kahulugan.

Again, I have enough money to buy this. It's not too expensive. 

Muli, mayroon akong sapat na pera upang bilhin ito.

Hindi naman masyadong mahal.

Then, we have ‘cheap’. This dress is cheap. 

Tapos, meron tayong 'cheap'.

Mura ang damit na ito.

Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  expensive, but it's a little bit more negative. 

Ngayon, ang 'mura' ay magkatulad,

nangangahulugan ito na hindi ito mahal,

ngunit ito ay medyo mas negatibo.

If you say that something is cheap,  people may think that the quality  

Kung sasabihin mong mura ang isang bagay,

maaaring isipin ng mga tao na ang kalidad ay hindi masyadong maganda.

is not very good. It's not very nice. 

Hindi ito masyadong maganda.

Okay. Now, let's look at the opposite. 

Sige.

Ngayon, tingnan natin ang kabaligtaran.

The opposite of these words is ‘expensive’. This dress is expensive.

Ang kabaligtaran ng mga salitang ito ay 'mahal'.

Mahal ang damit na ito.

It costs a lot of money, and too much money. Maybe, I don't want to buy it. 

Nagkakahalaga ito ng maraming pera,

at masyadong maraming pera.

Siguro, ayoko bumili.

We can also say ‘overpriced’. This dress is overpriced. 

Masasabi rin nating 'overpriced'.

Overpriced ang damit na ito.

That means the price is too high. 

Ibig sabihin ay masyadong mataas ang presyo.

So, again, I don't want to buy this  dress, it's too expensive and overpriced. 

So, again, ayoko bumili ng dress na ito,

sobrang mahal at overpriced.

Okay. Let's look at some more examples together. 

Sige.

Tingnan natin ang ilang higit pang mga halimbawa nang magkasama.

Let's look at some examples.

Tingnan natin ang ilang halimbawa.

The hat was affordable because it was on sale.

Ang sumbrero ay abot-kaya dahil ito ay ibinebenta.

The hat was affordable because it was on sale. 

Ang sumbrero ay abot-kaya dahil ito ay ibinebenta.

Next. I wish this bag was more affordable. 

Susunod.

Sana mas affordable ang bag na ito.

Next. This computer is surprisingly inexpensive.

Ang computer na ito ay nakakagulat na mura.

This computer is surprisingly inexpensive.

These shoes look beautiful, but they are too cheap. 

Ang mga sapatos na ito ay mukhang maganda, ngunit ang mga ito ay masyadong mura.

Next. That jacket is too expensive.

Last. I cannot buy this overpriced bag. 

Huli.

Hindi ko mabibili itong sobrang mahal na bag.

I cannot buy this overpriced bag.

Okay, so in this video, we learned that when we want to describe the cost of something,

Okay,

kaya sa video na ito, natutunan namin

na kapag gusto naming ilarawan ang halaga ng isang bagay,

as not too expensive,

bilang hindi masyadong mahal,

we say ‘affordable’.

sinasabi namin ang 'affordable'.

Okay. Something is affordable if it's not too expensive. 

Sige.

Ang isang bagay ay abot-kaya kung ito ay hindi masyadong mahal.

If I can buy it with the money I have.

Kung mabibili ko ito gamit ang pera na mayroon ako.

On the other hand, if something is not affordable,

Sa kabilang banda,

kung ang isang bagay ay hindi abot-kaya,

if the cost is very high,

kung ang halaga ay napakataas,

we  say ‘expensive’ or ‘overpriced’.

sinasabi natin na 'mahal' o 'overpriced'.

For me, I think some brands like  H&M and Forever 21 are affordable. 

Para sa akin, sa tingin ko

ay abot-kaya ang ilang brand tulad ng H&M at Forever 21.

Some people don't think this way. They think it's cheap. 

Ang ilang mga tao ay hindi nag-iisip sa ganitong paraan.

Iniisip nila na ito ay mura.

Sometimes, yes, some of the items can be cheap.

Minsan, oo, ang ilan sa mga item ay maaaring mura.

But for me, I like those brands because they are affordable.

Pero para sa akin, gusto ko yung mga brand na yun kasi affordable.

Another store that I like in Korea,

Isa pang tindahan na gusto ko sa Korea,

it's called Zara or Jara in Korea as they say.

Zara or Jara ang tawag sa Korea sabi nga nila.

They have some items that are affordable and some items that are very expensive.

Mayroon silang ilang mga bagay na abot-kaya

at ilang mga bagay na napakamahal.

Too expensive for me to buy.

Masyadong mahal para mabili ko.
