When you sign your name, you're putting down your signature.

Sign and signature. These two words are related  but let's look at the first four letters, 

Firma y firma. Estas dos palabras están relacionadas, pero veamos las primeras cuatro letras,

they're pronounced differently in the  word sign than in the word signature. 

se pronuncian de manera diferente en el signo denominativo que en la firma verbal.

In the word sign, there is no G sound. 

En el signo denominativo no hay sonido G.

S, Ai diphthong, N. Sign. But in the word signature,  

S, diptongo Ai, N. Signo. Pero en la palabra firma,

that diphthong changes to the IH vowel, SI  and now we do say the G, sig, sig, signature. 

ese diptongo cambia a la vocal IH, SI y ahora sí decimos G, sig, sig, firma.

Sign.

Firmar.
