Classroom English Phrases - Classroom English for Teachers and Students

hello students my name is Don and today I'm going  to teach you a lesson in classroom English after  

that first class the teacher might use an  expression like welcome back or nice to see  

you again good to see everyone again depending  on what time of day your class is meeting your  

teacher might say something like this good morning  if it's before 12 o'clock good afternoon if it's  

after 12 o'clock or good evening if the Sun has  gone down in the classroom it's also polite for  

the teacher to ask about how people are doing  so you might hear someone begin a sentence with  

how is or how are for example good morning with  students how is everybody or good afternoon how  

are you doing today it isn't necessary to answer  this question but it usually helps the mood of  

the class if some students answer fine or okay our  our second topic is beginnings these are words or  

phrases you can hear at the beginning of a class  or a particular lesson or any classroom activity  

remember class can mean a group of students who  meet at a certain time to learn about any topic  

English math science and so on the word lesson  can be used to mean one topic that forms part of  

a class for example this video that you're  watching right now has seven short lessons  

because it has seven topics finally an activity  is something the teacher asks the students to  

do this can include speaking reading writing or  listening when a teacher begins a class a lesson  

or an activity they will sometimes indicate this  with the words begin or start the teacher might  

also ask is everybody ready or are you ready  when a teacher begins a lesson or an activity  

you might also hear an ordinal number word these  are words like first meaning number one and order  

second meaning number two and more third number  three fourth number four and so on when you reach  

the final item in a sequence the teacher might  use the word last instead of the ordinal number  

word this means you are at the end of the series  and the lesson is probably almost finished for  

example let's start today's class are you ready  our first lesson will be common phrases you  

might hear in an English classroom okay now our  third topic is giving instructions or you might  

say giving directions some common activity verbs  that teachers use our practice do and try and the  

common activities for language learning are of  course read write listen and speak so a teacher  

might ask you to practice reading these sentences  or to try to listen carefully to the recording if  

you have a textbook in your English class some  common verbs or books include open turn to and  

look at so your teacher might ask you to open your  book to page five or turn to page 10 and look at  

exercise a some common phrases for practicing  English in a class are in a group which means  

with one or more other people with a partner which  means with another person usually someone close to  

where you are by yourself or on your own which  means just you and everybody or everyone which  

means all the students so for example everybody  practice reading these sentences with a partner  

turn to page 14 and do exercise be on your own  try asking your partner the questions you see  

on the board look at the example questions then  answer them as a group our fourth topic is pair  

work and group work when you're learning another  language it's very common for teachers to ask you  

to practice with other students in your class  this is sometimes called pair work when it's  

two students working together or group work when  it's two or usually more than two students working  

together in pair work you work with a partner  in group work you work with your group members  

your teacher might ask you to get together with a  partner or with another person this is asking to  

students to form a pair or your teacher might say  to form a group or make a group which is asking  

you to make a group of two or more students to  get better at English you should get comfortable  

working with another person or with a group of  people so that you can practice together even  

language learners can help each other by giving  practice and positive reinforcement like good  

job so here are some examples you might hear in  a classroom everybody get together with a partner  

and practice asking and answering the questions on  the board form a group of three or four people and  

do exercise be on page 15 now our fifth topic is  asking for comprehension or ask for understanding  

some common verbs in English for asking about  knowledge and understanding include understand  

which means to know something do you understand  me yes I understand you very well to get something  

which is a more informal way of saying understand  do you get it yes I get you or sure I get your  

meaning follow is another way of saying understand  or no do you follow me yes I understand or sure I  

follow see is a very common verb and it means not  just to see with your eyes but also it expresses  

knowledge or understanding especially when you  just learn something so English vocabulary isn't  

so hard see oh now I see remember this is a verb  for indicating that knowledge you learned before  

is still available if you learn some English  vocabulary you have to remember it which means  

that you can use it so for example do you remember  last week's lesson oh yes I do remember who  

remembers how to make the present progressive  tense oh I remember our sixth topic is giving  

feedback this means you responding to the teacher  but it also means the teacher responding to you in  

a classroom it's usually polite to raise your hand  when you have a question it isn't always necessary  

but it is always polite it's good to ask questions  of your teacher don't be afraid to do it just be  

respectful some phrases you might want to use when  you ask questions include what does something mean  

for example what does respectful me what does  that word mean another one is can you explain  

something can you explain how to make this verb  tense can you explain this a little more when your  

teacher gives you feedback you might hear words  or phrases like this good perfect nice job not  

bad all of these are positive comments they mean  you did well words that indicate you may have made  

a mistake include try again not quite close and  almost this means you did pretty well but maybe  

there were a few small mistakes try again and see  if you can fix them your teacher might also ask  

you to be louder or clearer louder means higher  volume and clearer means to speak more carefully  

usually slow down to improve how clearly you speak  now this is our seventh and last topic which is  

endings here are some common words that we use  in English to indicate that something is ending  

finish stop end time over and done so for example  it's time to finish class now we're done with this
