to say the one thing my students always find challenging, it’s irregular verbs.

Remember that irregular verbs are those that do not

follow the normal patterns for past tense and past participle.

While most English regular verbs use the ending,

ed, for the past tense and participle forms,

irregular verbs each have their own unique forms.

If they don’t follow any specific pattern,

how can you learn them?

What’s the big secret to learn irregular verbs?

Well, there’s no secret.

But there are some strategies you can use to make this easier.

Tip number one, learn the most common irregular verbs first.

To begin learning irregular verbs, make sure you familiarise yourself

with the most common ones.

Here is a top ten of the most common irregular verbs.

Tip number two, group irregular verbs

by their form.

One of the most effective ways to learn any type of vocabulary is to

make connections among them.

And irregular verbs are no exception.

Group the irregular verbs that follow a specific form,

so you can remember them more easily.

For example,

bet, bet, bet.

Buy, bought, bought.

Send, sent, sent.

Drink, drank, drunk.

Know, knew, known.

Tip number three, practice with sentences.

Remembering things with a full context is much easier

than trying to recall only a couple of words.

Any time you want to practice, make sure you create a full sentence

with the verb in all of its forms.

Try to write a fun or weird short story.

That way, you’ll have better chances to remember.

Bonus tip, practice daily.

As I told you in the beginning, there’s no secret or shortcut

to learn irregular verbs.

It’s all about consistency.

Make sure you find a way to make this process fun and enjoyable.

For example, you can have a bowl full of pieces of paper with irregular verbs.

You can also have flashcards with the base form on one side

and the past tense and past participle form on the other side.

Look for games on the internet.

Download an app to your phone. Learn a song, a poem.

Just make sure it works for you so you can do it daily.
