Let's Learn English! Topic: Furniture! 🛏️🪑🛋️ (Lesson Only)

Well hello everyone and welcome to this English lesson about

furniture. Furniture is all of the stuff that you have in your

house or apartment that you sit on that you lie down on that

you relax on that you maybe set a plate on. All of the things

that make your life easier. Furniture is pretty cool. You

can see here there are a couple of pieces of furniture in this

picture as well. I do have to say I did do a lesson a long

time ago on rooms and furniture. And this lesson is

just about furniture. Um I found a whole bunch of words to

that I could teach you this morning. Some will be very

familiar. Some maybe will be new to you. I do have to say

though that these are the names we use in my part of Canada. I

would say 95% of these are probably used in every English

speaking country. Uh but there might be a few in here that

that are unique to Canada. We'll see as we along. But

anyways once again welcome to this English lesson about

furniture. Let's talk about furniture. As I mentioned

furniture is anything that you use in your house to be

comfortable. Sometimes it's just something you use because

it's useful like a table. Sometimes it's the place where

you sit. Sometimes it's the place where you lie down.

Sometimes it's the place where you have a nap. Sometimes it's

what you use to be comfortable sitting while you read a book.

This is a piece of furniture. I'm not sure why it's outside.

But we do refer to furniture using the word peace. This is a

piece of furniture. This is a piece of furniture. This couch

is a piece of furniture. It's a unique phrase. I'm not sure why

we use the word peace. But people will say things like

this. Oh your new apartment looks good. It looks like you

still need a few more pieces of furniture. Or do you need to

buy a piece of furniture or a two for your new house? Or did

it come furnished? When something comes furnished it

means it has all the furniture there already. But we

definitely use the word piece when we're talking about a

single piece of furniture. If I could use the word to defy the

phrase that would be great. One of the things that is very

common in my part of the world is something called a recliner.

And we also sometimes call this a lazy boy. This is a type of

chair for one person. And it will recline. It will go back

and you can put your legs up. A little thing comes out from the

bottom for your feet to rest on. The general term is

recliner. But lazy boy is actually the name of a company

that makes this type of chair. And we now use that word to

refer to this type of chair. So when you sit down at night and

you want to watch a basketball game you might sit in a

recliner. You might sit in a lazy boy And you might put the

chair back. That's what we say. Put your feet up and sit and

enjoy what you are watching. When I do this though sometimes

I fall asleep. Um whenever I'm in a recliner and I go back if

I'm a little bit tired sometimes I doze off. Here are

the standards. A couch or sofa is something that looks like

this. This is a place where multiple people can sit. Maybe

you've invited friends over for coffee and you're going to just

sit in your living room or you might sit in your rec room rec

creation room. We call it rec room. Um to just have a cup of

tea or a cup of coffee and to sit and chat. You might sit on

a couch. We also call this a sofa. There's this belief that

Canadians call this a Chesterfield. I've never called

this a Chesterfield. I have always called this a couch. And

I rarely use the word sofa. I almost always use the word

couch when I'm talking about this. If two people can sit

here. It has a unique name. We then call it a love seat. So a

couch can sit three or four people or more if it's a huge

couch. But a love seat is designed for two people. I'm

not sure why we call it this. As a child I used to giggle

when my parents called it a love seat because I would

always imagine a couple sitting on there really close together.

Not going to mention any more things but a love seat is a

couch designed just for two people. Um and this might be

unique to my part of the world but I don't think it is. I'm

wondering if Brent could chime in in the chat if he calls this

a lazy boy. And if he calls this a love seat. I would be

interested to know that. So we have the standard the chair. A

chair is anything that you sit on. Usually a chair has four

legs and a back. Although I think there are might be chairs

with three legs that would be rare. But a chair generally has

four legs. Sometimes it's cushioned. Sometimes it's just

made of wood or plastic. Sometimes it has arms.

Sometimes it doesn't. But a chair can be found in the

kitchen. A chair can be found in the living room. Uh a chair

can be found anywhere in the house actually. We even have a

chair in our bedroom. We even have a chair in our hallway I

think. Yes. I'm not sure why. I should figure that out. And of

course I mentioned this already. A chair with arms is

called an armchair. So an armchair has a spot where you

can put your arms on the side. This is really nice when

reading a book because you can put your elbow on the arm of

the armchair while you hold your book and then you can read

it. So an armchair is a chair that has arms. Pretty pretty

simple actually. And we have something called a beanbag

chair. We had a beanbag chair. But eventually it broke. A

beanbag chair is filled with small dried beans or small

beads made of plastic that just make for a very comfortable

chair. When you sit in it the chair forms around the shape of

your body. Um so when you sit in a beanbag chair it's very

cozy and it's very comfortable. I actually think maybe we

should buy another beanbag chair. They're very very fun.

Kids especially enjoy beanbag chairs. So Brent who's from the

United States says yes to me. We both terms are used. So the

term lazy boy and the term love seat are familiar to Brent as

well who speaks the American flavour of English. Yes I

should buy another beanbag chair. That would be super fun.

I love beanbag chairs. And then sometimes we have what's called

a footstool. Um when you sit on a couch or when you sit on a

chair you can put your feet up on a footstool. By the way you

can sit in a chair and you can sit on a chair. It kind of

depends what kind of chair it is. If I was to sit on a

kitchen chair I would say I'm sitting on a chair. But if I

was to sit in an armchair I might say I'm sitting in a

chair. So you can sit on a chair and you can sit in a

chair. I think it just depends how much of the chair is around

you. Um a footstool can sometimes be called an ottoman

as well. A footstool is just a nice place to put your feet.

When people say I'm going to go home and put my feet up and

relax they usually mean that they're going to sit somewhere

where they have a footstool where they can put their feet

on the footstool and simply relax a little bit. And then we

have of course a rocking chair. A rocking chair is very common

in a baby's room. Often a rocking chair is used to soothe

a child or baby who won't sleep. You'll hold the baby and

then you'll rock in the rocking chair. By the way I'm sitting

in an office chair not a rocking chair. But it does

happen to go back and forth as well. Um but a rocking chair is

a fairly common thing to have when you are when you have

babies. Um to have a rocking chair so that when the mom's

feeding the baby or when either the mom or dad are just with

the baby trying to get the baby to sleep. Sometimes you'll sit

in a rocking chair and the rocking motion will soothe the

baby. And then we have what's called a stool. A stool is

simply a really high thing to sit on. Usually with four legs.

It can have three. Um and they're really nice because you

don't sit all the way down. It's easy to get on and off a

stool because the where you sit is the same height as your butt

basically. And we have another type of stool called a bar

stool which simply has a back on it. So you can sit and be a

little more comfortable. Stools are Common in rooms like if you

have a rec room if you have a pool table or a dartboard or a

room where people would stand more than sit you might have a

few stools around for people to sit on. Um and we have a bar

stool. I think in the barn we have a bar stool. A really old

one that cheap Bob the Canadian found on the side of the road.

I should take a picture of it someday and show you. A bed. So

a bed simply put is the place where you sleep. And other

things can happen there with consenting adults. I won't go

into that. But a bed is usually consist usually consists of a

frame. A box spring and a mattress in my part of the

world. So this is a little hard to describe. But the bed frame

is made out of wood or metal. And it is the basically the

skeleton of the bed. It's what everything else goes on. We

call that the bed frame. In my part of world we put something

on top called a box spring which is simply a big square.

It looks like a mattress but it's actually kind of hard and

then on top of that we put the mattress. The mattress then has

sheets and everything like that. By the way at this end of

the bed we have what's called the headboard. So once again a

bed is where you sleep. Uh it is it consists of a bed frame.

And then in this part of the world we put a box spring and

on top of that we put a mattress. And then earlier

someone mentioned bunk bed Mode Aggs was talking about bunk

beds. Bunk beds are stacked beds. One bed on top of the

other bed. Usually found in kids rooms. They could be found

in like a dorm at a university. Or maybe if you are in the

military and you are in the barracks. Where people live on

a military base. They might have bunk beds. But a bunk bed

is basically a bed with another bed on top of it. Interestingly

enough when I think about the word bunk bed like oh are you

going to buy a bunk bed I would say yes and if someone said oh

do your kids have bunk beds I would say yes so the

pluralization of bunk bed like in the singular it still means

two beds when you say bunk beds it can mean one set of bunk

beds or more than one set. Kinda weird. I didn't realize

that. And sometimes I learn things when I make the lessons.

Uh beside the bed you will find a night table or nightstand.

This is just a small piece of furniture. Notice I'm using the

word peace again. I've used it often. A small piece of

furniture that you can put things on. Usually people will

have their alarm clock. They might have a book on their

nightstand or night table. In the nightstand they might have

a few other things. I sometimes put my watch in the drawer of

my nightstand because it glows at night. And I don't like the

glow. Um and usually People will have a small lamp. This is

within easy reach when you're in bed. So if you need to turn

the light on quick or if you need to set your book or in my

case your reading glasses down before you go to sleep that's

where you would put them on your night table or nightstand.

Often people will have a dresser in their bedroom. This

is simply a large piece of furniture with many drawers.

And this is where you would keep your foldable clothes.

This is where you keep your socks and your underwear. Maybe

your T-shirts. Things that you wouldn't hang up on a hanger.

Things that you would fold. So again those are the big three I

think. I keep my shorts in here. I keep actually keep my

jeans in my dresser. Um but then I have other things that I

do like to hang up. And you would then put them in a

wardrobe. Now Jen and I don't have a wardrobe. We actually

have closets in our bedroom where we can hang things up.

But a wardrobe is a piece of furniture with doors on the

front. With a place where you can hang things up on coat

hangers. So if you had like nice shirts. Or maybe you have

really nice dress pants and you don't want them to get

wrinkled. You would hang them in your wardrobe. Again in my

case Jen and I hang our clothes in our closet. So a closet

isn't a piece of furniture. It's part of the room. But a

wardrobe is something you could buy. It's a large piece of

furniture that you can buy and put things in. So when you

first move somewhere if you don't have anything for your

bedroom you might go and buy a bedroom set. You can buy all of

these things at the same time from a furniture store. So you

could go and say I need a bedroom set. And that would

consist of a night table. Maybe two night tables. Uh a bed. A

wardrobe, a dresser, there's different kinds of bedroom

sets. But when we talk about everything that goes in a

bedroom especially when you are buying it. We would say you're

buying a bedroom set. When people get married then they

usually go and buy a bedroom set because they're moving into

a house or apartment together and they need all of those

pieces of furniture. So they and it's usually cheaper to buy

a bedroom set. You get a little bit of a better price when you

buy when you buy everything at once. If you have a baby or if

you know someone who has a baby they will most likely have a

crib. A crib is of course a small bed for babies and for

toddlers up to a certain age. Kids will sleep in a bed. Um

it's designed so the baby can't can't fall out. You don't want

the baby to roll off the mattress. So we have a crib so

that the child is safe when they are sleeping. They can

roll around to their heart's content and they are safe the

entire time. Um we all have what's called a changing table.

And I actually sometimes call it a change table. Um but

changing table seems to be the correct term according to the

internet. This is where you would change a baby's diaper.

So a changing table has a small soft top or pad. And underneath

it has an area to store baby wipes, diapers, and all the

stuff you would need when you're taking care of your

child. So if you have a baby or a young child that's wearing

diapers. Uh and if they need their diaper changed you would

change it on a changing table. Very handy piece of furniture

when you're changing diapers a lot like Jen and I were many

years ago. It's so nice to have a changing table. And of course

in the kitchen if you have a young child you will have

what's called a high chair. Um notice I don't say high chair.

Notice how I say it. I say high chair. So even though it's two

words. And even though the first word is high. I actually

say it more like this. Highchair. It's a high chair.

So it's it's Like I don't finish the word high. Um so a

high chair is just a chair that's really tall so that the

baby is at the same level as the parent. It's much easier to

feed a child when they're sitting in a high chair. Um and

usually it will have you can strap them in. So that they

can't climb out. There's usually like a little almost

like a seat belt for the child. Um so definitely something

that's very common in a home where you have really really

all children.

As we move to other rooms you might have something called an

entertainment centre. So the piece of furniture underneath

this TV is called an entertainment centre. We also

sometimes call it a TV stand. They are pretty much identical.

Um they are just low small low pieces of furniture where you

can put your Blu-ray player if you still have one of those.

Where you can put your gaming consoles. Maybe you have an

Xbox or a PlayStation or a Nintendo Switch. You would put

those things in the bottom of the entertainment centre. Maybe

you have cable TV and you have a little cable TV box that

would sit in the bottom of the entertainment centre. So this

little piece of furniture here we would call an entertainment

centre or we would call it a TV stand. If you went to a

furniture store and said where are the entertainment centres

or where are the TV stands? They would they would send you

to the same section. They mean the same thing. And of course

the general term table. Anything with four legs and a

flat surface that you would put things on we would call a

table. So you might sit and eat at a table. You might have a

small table for playing games with friends. A table is

usually a standard height. I'm not sure what the standard

table height is. But it's a place that it's comfortable to

sit at. So notice you can sit on a chair but you can sit at a

table. Which requires a chair by the way. When we have

meetings at work sometimes we sit at tables to have that

meeting. At lunch I sit at the table in the staff room. At

night Jen and I call the kids down and we say come to the

table. Everyone sit at the table we're going to have

supper. So a table four legs flat surface. Very very useful

invention. Um you might have something called a card table

or folding table. Jen and I have a table like this in our

back room. If friends come over and we want to play cards or a

board game we will get out the card table or folding table.

The legs fold up and we can store the table in a special

room in our house so it's out of the way but when we need it

we can take it back out and use it. And then of course I've

mentioned this a couple of times you have what's called a

kitchen table. This is the table that you would usually

find in the kitchen of a home. They are different sizes

depending on the amount of people who live in the home. We

have a big family so we have a big kitchen table. We can

actually sit 10 people at our kitchen table. So we have

enough room and our kitchen table has what's called leafs

in it. So you can take pieces of the table out. And you can

make bigger and smaller. I should have found a small video

on that. But our kitchen table has four leafs that you can put

in. So we can continually make the table bigger or smaller

depending on how many people are coming over for supper or

dinner. And then usually you have kitchen chairs around the

kitchen table. Uh in our living room we have a coffee table.

This is a low table usually located in front of a couch.

And the coffee table is basically where you put things.

You might have a few books there. Um the remote control

for the TV is usually on our coffee table. It's just a handy

little table. If you are actually having tea or coffee

with people you will put your tea or coffee cup on the table.

But usually you put what's called a coaster underneath. I

should have found a picture of that too. A coaster is a small

piece of wood or other material that you put a hot thing on

before you put it on a coffee table. And then of course we

have what's called an end table very similar to a nightstand or

night table except you will find this beside a couch or a

chair or love's feet. An end table is just a small place to

put maybe a plant maybe your books maybe your reading

glasses you might put the remote control on the end table

as well and you might just keep it there because then it's easy

to find it back. Instead of losing it in the couch

cushions. That's the worst thing when you can't find the

remote control. So you might have a desk if you are a

university student or if you're just a person like me. I have a

desk. Where's my desk? My desk is right here. I'm actually

sitting at a desk as well. I have two desks. This is where I

do most of my work. And this is the desk that I live stream

from. A desk is a small it's similar to a table but it's

very tiny and it's made for one person. It usually has some

storage. You can see this desk has drawers on the far side.

Sometimes a desk will even have a small cabinet built in like a

door that you open. But a desk is where you would do some

writing. It's where you would put your computer. Uh let's see

here. Let's see. I need to go now says mode. But before I do

let me remind you one last time to keep your to keep your

throat. It looks like you're feeling refreshed now and

way the lamp that you put on a desk is called a desk lamp. Uh

and the chair you use at a desk is usually called an office

chair. Or if you're young and you play computer games you

might have a gaming chair. A really fun that goes all the

way back. It's a little inside joke for you younger people. I

think you'll know who I'm talking about. If you have a

gaming chair that goes all the way back that's usually pretty

cool. Um let's see here. Uh you might have a bookcase or a

bookshelf. Same word for the same piece of furniture. This

is a piece of furniture with many many shelves and you can

store things on those shelves. Usually books but it doesn't

have to be. Sometimes people will buy little thing and store

them on their shelf. They'll have little knickknacks that

they'll put. Or is it called brick a brack too? Think

knickknacks. They'll buy little things. Maybe you go on a trip

and you buy a souvenir. You might come home and put it on a

bookshelf or bookcase. We also have outdoor furniture. All of

my outdoor furniture is either put away or flipped upside down

right now because it's winter and I don't want it to blow

away. But outdoor furniture is furniture that's designed to be

outside. In English we would say it's designed to withstand

the elements. It's usually made out of a type of wood that does

really really well outside. Um it's sometimes made of plastic.

Sometimes it's made of metal. But outdoor furniture is just

furniture you would use on a nice day. Not in the middle of

winter. To sit outside and chat or read a book or enjoy

someone's company. And we what's called patio furniture.

You could also by the way call this a patio set. In Canada we

often have a deck or patio attached to our house. And we

would then buy patio furniture. This again is furniture that's

designed to be outside. Um it's usually made out of really

durable material. Because you don't want it to get wet and

rot. So they build it out of material that stays really good

when it's outside. So here you see a patio table, patio chairs

and a nice umbrella so that these people can enjoy their

time outside. So I have a picnic table outside. Most

people in North America have a picnic table somewhere. It's a

very common type of table. The design is very standard across

North America. It's made from wood. Sometimes it's made from

metal but it's usually made from wood. If you go to I'm

going to say any park in Canada there will most likely be

picnic tables somewhere for you to sit at to have little meal

with your family. We don't often put a blanket on the

ground when we go and have a picnic. We often go somewhere

and sit at a picnic table. There's usually room for six or

even eight people depending on the size of the table. Um and

it's really really fun. Um by the way I promised one of my

kids I would build a new picnic table. And I never did it. So I

should make sure I do that next year. Our picnic table is still

working but it's kind of falling apart. And then we have

the classic lawn chair. So a lawn chair is a foldable chair

that you can use outside. This is the old version of a lawn

chair. There are newer chairs now that are much better

designed. But when I was a kid this is what a lawn chair look

like. And we still have lawn chairs that look like this. A

very light foldable chair that you can bring with you when you

go camping. Or in the summer when you go visit someone you

might bring lawn chairs so that you can sit outside around a

campfire to enjoy each other's company and to talk.
