When people ask me, "What do you do?" I say, "I'm a teacher."

It's my job. I teach. I teach English.

I can also say I'm an English teacher. I'm an English language teacher.

I'm an online teacher.

I teach English online.

Maybe you don't have a job yet because you're a student. When someone asks, "What do you do?"

you can say, I'm a student.

Let's talk about jobs.

You can build vocabulary with Flavia and Andreia.

How are you today? Okay. Yeah? How are you, Flavia? Good. Yeah? Okay.

I want to talk about jobs first. Jobs. Do you remember the question?

Um, if you want to know someone's job,

what do you ask?

What do you do? Yes. What do you do? What do you what do? What do you do? So if someone asks you, "What do you do?"

what do you say?

I was or I am? I am.

I am [a] vet assistant. A vet assistant.

I am a vet assistant. A. I am a vet assistant.

And you can also say, "I'm also a student."

I'm also a student. I'm a student.

I'm also...? Also. Because if you have two jobs: I'm a vet assistant

and I'm a student.

And.

Or you can say "and." I'm a vet assistant and I'm a student.

I'm a vet assistant. I'm also a student. I'm also a student. So you can do "and" or "also."

What do you do?

I'm a student. I'm a student. And if you ask me?

What do you do?

This person loves colors.

This person sees beauty. Painter?

Maybe a painter, but it could be a painter...

a photographer. All of them are artists.

Artists. Maybe they paint. Maybe they draw. Maybe they do different things.

But they they make beautiful things. Right?

This person works with numbers and looks at a computer screen every day.

And this person is usually very smart.

Web designer.

Maybe a web designer, but look. They understand computer languages.

They

can program computers.

Programmer. Computer programmer.

This person makes music.

Musician. Musician.

Musician. If they make music, they're a musician.

Musician.

Where does this person work?

Maybe...laboratory?

Laboratory or we can say lab. Right? This person works in a lab.

They wear special clothing, and they have special equipment.

Special instruments.

They study things.

Biology?

All of them are scientists. Scientists.

Chemistry, biology, all of it. This person is a scientist. Maybe they do research.

Scientist.

There are different kinds of scientists.

Scientists. They like science. They know science. Okay.

Um, this person works in a hospital and helps people. Nurse?

It could be a nurse or?

Doctor. We don't know actually. She could be a nurse. She could be a doctor.

Nurses help doctors. Nurses and doctors help people.

They work in a hospital.

This person cuts your hair and makes your hair look good.

I don't know. Do you?

Haircut?

Okay, so they give you a haircut.

They're hairstylists.

Hairstylist.

So you see some of them have -er like computer programmer, teacher. Right?

Some of them have -ist.

Scientist, hairstylist, artist. So often for people, we have this -ist or -er.

You might also see this: musician.

So there are different endings for people. Okay. Hairstylist.

Okay, so she's a businesswoman.

This is...a businessman. Right? Um, not all businessmen wear suits, but usually.

I guess he wears a suit every day.

Okay. So there were some new ones here.

Chef.

Businessman.

Businesswoman.

Artist.

Computer programmer.

Musician.

Scientist. Where's our scientist?

And hairstylist.

Hairstylist. Um, do you go to a hairstylist or do you cut your hair at home?

No. [I] go to a hairstylist.

You go to a hairstylist? Yeah, it's not expensive. You can...fifteen dollars, ten dollars.

They can cut your hair.

Singular means one.

Plural means many.

Let's practice saying singular and plural words.

In this first group, the plural ending -s will sound like /s/.

chef - chefs

pilot - pilots

dentist - dentists

hairstylists - hairstylists

scientist - scientists

artists - artists

In this next group, the plural ending -s will sound like a /z/.

teacher - teachers

engineer - engineers

doctor - doctors

computer programmer - computer programmers

musician - musicians

Then we have two irregular plural nouns: businesswoman - business women.

Businessman - businessmen.

They're all business people.

Who are these people?

Chefs. Chefs. Not "ch"..."sh." Chefs.

One chef. Two chefs. These are chefs. And what else?

Chefs or?

Cook. Cook. Right? Cooker? Not cooker. A cooker is a machine, like a rice cooker.

You can put rice...and cook rice. These are not cookers. These are cooks. Cooks or chefs.

But there's a difference between "job" and "profession."

Right? Job and profession.

If you say, "I'm a cook," it's...

it's fine. It's a job. You make money. "Chef" sounds like a profession. It's your life.

For me, yes, teaching is a job. But for me, it's a profession. It's my life. That's what I do.

So there's "job" and "profession." They're similar, but a little different. How we think.

So I think these are chefs. They look serious.

And the food looks good.

Okay. Try this. This is here to help you. I'm going to turn these over.

We'll play a little game.

You'll choose and say, "Oh!

I have a friend. His name is Paul and he's a scientist." Okay?

That's my friend. He

works in a laboratory.

So, my friend Paul, he's a scientist.

Tell me about your friends.

This is David.

He's a musician.

Mmm. And he plays? He plays the guitar.

Okay. Yes. You go, "I have a friend. His name is David. He's a musician. He plays the guitar. Yeah."

This is John.

He is a pilot.

Mmm.

Maybe he works for American Airlines.

So, I have a friend, John. He's a pilot. He works for American Airlines.

Okay, so try this. Like, "I have a friend. His name is John. He's a pilot." "Oh. That's interesting. Cool."

I don't know any pilots.

He is my friend. This is my friend. Or I have a friend. This is my friend.

She is a teacher. Mm-hmm. What's her name?

Her name is Jennifer.

Oh.

This is Paul.

My friend is [an] artist.

My friend is an artist.

You can say, "This is my friend Paul." This is my friend Paul.

This is [an] artist.

He is an artist. He is. He's. He's an artist.

He's [an] artist. An. He's an artist.

He...because one artist -- an artist.

An artist.

Right? Because artist starts with an "a." A chef, a musician, an artist.

He's an artist.

Oh nice.

I have a friend. This is Joey.

And he's a businessman. He's handsome.

Yeah. This is my friend...

These are friends.

Maria and John.

They are a chef...they are chefs. They are chefs. Nice.

Chefs. They are chefs. Chefs. They're chefs. Nice. Maybe they cook dinner for you sometimes?

Yes! Aren't you lucky? Nice friends!

Let me try one.

Um...No, I'm going to make you do that one.

Too easy.

Oh, I have a friend. Her name is Teresa. And she's a businesswoman. Oh, yeah. She's very rich.

She makes a lot of money.

I have a friend. Her name is Maria.

And he's an engineer.

She. She's an engineer. Nice. She must be smart.

Uh-huh.

I have a friend...Paul.

You have a lot of friends that are named Paul.

Yes. Wow.

He's a dentist. Mm-hm.

Brian. Brian! Okay. Or Michael.

And give me five names that are not Maria for women.

Janey. Good. Jane. Janey. Nicole. I like that name.

Tiffany. Ooh, Tiffany.

Anna.

I don't know.

Stephanie, Julie, Lucy.

Okay. Tell me about your friends. Go ahead.

I think it's a woman. A woman? Yeah. I have a friend, Julie. Oh.

She's a

computer programmer. Nice. She's very smart. I can imagine.

I have a friend. His name is...It's a she.

So "her." Her name is Anna.

And she's a doctor.

Ah. Nice. Do you know what kind of doctor?

No. But she's really smart. Yes.

Okay. All right.

Um, which job do you think is more difficult?

Doctor or computer programmer?

For me, doctor.

A businesswoman. I think yeah. But the engineer? They earn good money. They earn good money, but I think

usually a businesswoman would earn more. A business woman makes more money? Yeah, maybe.

Who do you think makes more money, a chef or a doctor?

In Brazil, a doctor. Here? I think a chef. Maybe. I don't know.

I think if you're a famous chef, then you make a lot of money.

Yeah, if you're famous chef. Same thing if I ask you, for example, an artist...

Who makes more money, an artist or a doctor?

Doctor. Usually a doctor makes more money, but if you're a famous artist, very famous,

I think you make a lot of money. Right? If we talk about something like money, you can talk about a lot, right?

He's famous. He makes a lot of money.

Or...he's an artist. He's good, but he's not famous. He makes a little. He makes very little.

Very little or not a lot. Very little. Not a lot.

You can say "very little money" or just "very little." He makes very little.

He makes very little money.

He doesn't make a lot, or she makes a lot of money.

Lots of money.

And we can talk about more.

For money, it's the verb "make"?

Make money, right? How much money does she make?

She makes a hundred thousand dollars a year.

How much money does he make? He makes thirty thousand dollars a year, so she makes more and he makes...

less. He makes less.

A scientist and a musician. Who makes more money usually?

Very famous?

Well...

So a very famous musician...

A very famous musician makes more. Makes more. Right? But usually I think musicians

make less.

Make less. I think scientists...maybe they don't earn a lot, but they earn, you could say, they earn good money.

Good money is like not a lot,

not a little. But it's good. Good money. I think scientists earn in good money again. If you're a famous scientist, then you earn a lot.

Earn a lot? Earn. Ah.

So you can use "make" with money

or you can use "earn." Earn. Earn.

For everyday English, you can say "make," but "earn" is a nice verb.

Like, how much does she make? How much does she earn?

She earns a hundred thousand dollars.

She makes a hundred thousand dollars.

Make and earn.

Make or earn?

Mm-hmm. We have a pilot and a teacher. Who earns more?

Pilot. Give me the whole sentence. A pilot...

A pilot earns more.

Which means if a pilot... Earns? Because I earn, he earns. He earns more.

She...

earns less.

She earns less. She earns less. Mm-hmm.

In the U.S., we don't usually ask, "How much money do you make?"

Or "How much do you earn?"

Many people don't want to talk about money.

But you can ask general questions.

For example,

how much does a doctor earn?

How much does a high school teacher make?

When you talk about an amount of money, you can use general words or specific numbers.

Doctors earn a lot.

Musicians don't earn a lot.

She earns good money.

He earns very little.

A doctor makes over $100,000.

Or a doctor makes over a hundred thousand.

A high school teacher makes around fifty or sixty thousand dollars.

A high school teacher in the U.S. makes between forty and eighty thousand dollars.

Or a high school teacher in the U.S. makes between forty and eighty thousand.
