Let's start with prepositions.

Right now I'm on the bed, but now I'm in the bed.

So notice we use in when you're  under the covers, under the blanket.

그러니 이불 속에 있을 때는 'in'을 사용한다는 점에 유의하세요 .

So you can use covers for everything on your  bed, or you can be specific and say blanket.

따라서 침대에 있는 모든 것에 커버를 씌울 수도 있고, 구체적으로 담요라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

So I'm in the bed because I'm under the covers,

but I'm on the bed now because on  is used for a vertical surface.

So the bed is considered a vertical surface.

Now notice how there's no preposition?

It's not I'm walking with my cat.

Because when you walk an animal,  you walk a cat or you walk a dog,

more commonly you're in charge of it.

You're in control of it.

It's also very common to say I'm taking  my cat, I'm taking my dog for a walk.

데리고 간다 , 개를 데리고 간다고 말하는 것도 흔합니다.

So right now I'm walking Sasha  or I'm taking Sasha for a walk.

Right now I'm walking with my husband.

So notice, of course, if you  use the preposition with,  

물론, 전치사 with를 사용하면 함께

it's because you're doing it  together is collaborative, is joint.

한다는 의미이므로 협력적이고 공동이라는 뜻입니다.

I'm walking with my husband,  with my friends, with my family.

저는 남편, 친구, 가족과 함께 걷고 있어요.

Now, when I made this short, a lot of  native speakers commented and joked,  

제가 이 짧은 글을 올렸을 때 많은 원어민들이 "

Oh, you're walking heaven.

아, 천국을 걷고 계시네요"라고 댓글을 달고 농담을 했습니다.

Because remember, if you remove that  preposition, it means I am in control.

기억하세요. 그 전치사를 제거하면 내가 통제권을 갖는다는 뜻이거든요.

So a lot of native speakers joked and said,  my wife always walks me, meaning my wife is in  

그래서 많은 원어민들이 농담조로 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다. " 아내가 항상 나를 데리고 산책을 시켜준다는 건 아내가 통제력을 갖고 있다는 뜻이야

control, in charge of my friend sent me a text  message and said, what are you up to tonight?

. 내 친구가 문자로 오늘 밤에 뭐 할 거야?"라고 물었대요.

Do you know what that means?

그게 무슨 뜻인지 아시나요? 뭐하고 계세요

What are you up to?

?

This is how a native speaker commonly  asked someone, what are you doing?

이것은 원어민이 누군가에게 흔히 묻는 질문입니다 . "무슨 일을 하고 계신가요?"

So up to in this expression means  doing what are you doing tonight?

그러니 이 표현에서 up to는 오늘 밤 뭐 할 거야? 라는 뜻이에요.

So just change doing to up to  what are you up to tonight?

그러니 ' 오늘 밤 뭐 할 거야?'로 바꿔보세요.

So now you'll sound just like a native speaker.

이제 마치 원어민처럼 들릴 겁니다.

And this is what I'm up to tonight.

오늘 밤 제가 할 일은 다음과 같습니다.

So not very much.

그렇지 않아요.

So I can reply back to my friend  and say not much, not too much.

그래서 나는 친구에게 별로, 너무 많지도 않은 내용으로 답장할 수 있을 거야.

Or I could be more specific and say I'm  relaxing, I'm relaxing at home, I'm chilling.

아니면 더 구체적으로 말해서, 휴식을 취하고 있어요, 집에서 휴식을 취하고 있어요, 쉬고 있어요라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

That's a very casual informal  way of saying relaxing.

I'm chilling.

나는 쉬고 있다.

I'm chilling at home.

저는 집에서 쉬고 있어요.

You can be more specific and say I'm relaxing  at home and watching a movie or and watching  

더 구체적으로 말하면, 집에서 휴식을 취하며 영화를 보거나,

Netflix and reading a book and listening  to music, whatever you might be doing.

넷플릭스를 보고 책을 읽고 음악을 듣는 등 무엇을 하고 있든 말할 수 있습니다.

And here's a very common  phrasal verb you should know.

그리고 여러분이 알아야 할 매우 일반적인 어구 동사를 알려드리겠습니다.

I'm hanging out at home.

나는 집에서 놀고 있어요.

So to hang out is the phrasal verb.

그래서 'hangout'이 어구 동사입니다.

We commonly use this with people.

우리는 흔히 사람들에게 이 표현을 사용합니다.

Do you want to hang out tonight?

오늘 밤 같이 놀래?

So that's another way of saying, do  you want to spend time with me tonight?

그러니까, 오늘 밤 나랑 시간 보낼래? 라는 뜻이에요.

So I could say I'm hanging  out with my friend tonight.

그러니 오늘 밤은 친구와 놀고 있다고 말할 수 있겠죠.

So you use the preposition with person.

그러니까 person과 함께 전치사를 사용하는 거죠.

So spending time socially now you can  use it with a location like I did.

그래서 이제 사회적으로 시간을 보내면서 제가 한 것처럼 위치를 활용할 수 있습니다.

I'm hanging out at home, which means  I'm just spending time at home.

나는 집에서 놀고 있어요. 즉, 그냥 집에서 시간을 보내고 있다는 뜻이에요.

So what are you up to tonight?

오늘 밤에는 뭐 할 거야?

Not too much.

너무 많지는 않아요.

I'm just hanging out at home.

저는 집에서 놀고 있을 뿐이에요.

I'm watching a movie and eating popcorn.

영화를 보면서 팝콘을 먹고 있어요.

What about you?

당신은 어때요?

What are you up to tonight?

오늘 밤에 뭐 할 거야?

I'm walking to the market to get groceries.

나는 식료품을 사러 시장으로 걸어가고 있어요.

So notice two things.

그러니 두 가지 점에 유의하세요.

You get groceries.

식료품을 사러 가세요.

So the verb is get.

그러니까 동사는 get이에요.

I need to get groceries.

식료품을 사야 해요.

And notice how I said I'm walking.

그리고 내가 걷고 있다고 말한 것을 주의하세요.

So that's the form of transportation.

그게 교통수단의 형태예요.

I'm walking to the market.

나는 시장으로 걸어가고 있어요.

If I said I'm going for a walk,  so notice to go for a walk,  

내가 산책을 간다고 하면, 산책을 가라고 말하는 것은

that's just for leisure or for pleasure.

단지 여가나 즐거움을 위한 것일 뿐입니다.

So in the afternoon I went the  past simple of the verb go.

그래서 오후에는 동사 go의 과거 단순형을 사용했습니다.

I went for a walk in the park,  but I'm not going for a walk.

I'm walking to get groceries.

I made it to the market, but after  walking for 20 minutes, mainly uphill,

I'm really hot, I'm really sweaty,  so I need to stop to have some water.

So notice have water you can  use have instead of drink.

따라서 음료 대신 사용할 수 있는 물이 있다는 것을 알아두세요 .

I have water, I drink water.

They're the same.

Now notice I said stop infinitive  stop to have some water.

이제 제가 stop 동사원형으로 'stop to have some water'라고 말했다는 것을 주의하세요 .

That means I start the action of drinking water.

즉, 물을 마시는 행동을 시작한다는 뜻입니다.

So I'm having water.

그래서 물을 마시고 있어요.

I stopped to have water, but  I could say I stopped walking.

나는 물을 마시려고 멈췄지만, 걷는 것을 멈췄다고 말할 수 있을 것 같다.

There's stop plus gerund, your verb plus ING.

stop에 동명사를 붙이고, 동사에 ING를 붙이는 거죠.

That means you stop that action.

즉, 그 행동을 중단하라는 뜻입니다.

So I stopped walking to start to have some water.

그래서 나는 걷는 것을 멈추고 물을 마시러 갔습니다.

Here is everything I got at the market.

시장에서 구입한 물건은 전부 여기 있습니다.

So how about this?

그럼 이건 어때요?

I'll hold the item and then you say it out loud  

제가 물건을 들고 있을게요. 그러면 여러분은 그 물건과 발음을 알고 있는지 확인하기 위해 큰 소리로 말하세요

to make sure you know that  item and the pronunciation.

These are maybe they're not that common  outside of North America at least.

These are plantains.

It's the same pronunciation as the verb  to beat, but the spelling is different.

I would view all of this as a  collective, so I would just say garlic.

I wouldn't say these are garlics.

That doesn't sound correct.

You could say bulb to represent 1.

So you could say these are bulbs of  garlic, but that's not very common.

You would just say this is garlic.

So this is a bulb of garlic and then a piece.

Notice that unstressed pronunciation.

But what if I wanted to make this singular?

I wouldn't say all lettuce.

전부 상추라고는 말하고 싶지 않아요.

This is all lettuce.

You can't say that.

But if you want to make this singular,  you would say a head, a head of lettuce.

하지만 이것을 단수로 표현하고 싶다면 머리, 상추 한 포기라고 말할 겁니다.

So I need a head of lettuce.

그러니까 상추 한 포기가 필요해요.

Otherwise you just say I need lettuce.

그렇지 않으면 그냥 상추가 필요하다고만 말하게 되죠.

And we got a big bag of of strawberries.

그리고 우리는 큰 가방에 딸기를 가득 담았습니다.

And I also got a bag of tomatoes, tomatoes.

그리고 토마토 한 봉지도 받았어요, 토마토.

Now you can call these smaller ones  cherry tomatoes or just tomatoes.

Let me share some word tasks that I do every day.

Now, notice I said every day.

So what verb tense will we use?

The present?

Simple.

Every day.

I could also use any of the  other adverbs of frequency.

매일.

Always, sometimes, usually, rarely.

Never.

Every day is an exception because that  comes at the very beginning or end.

매일이 예외인 이유는 그것이 바로 시작이나 끝에 오기 때문입니다.

Every day I check my e-mail.

Now, if you use the other adverbs of frequency,

you could say I always check my e-mail at the  beginning of the day or at the end of the day.

And to check your e-mail, to check means to,  to look at, to review, to check your e-mail.

So you can check your messages,

You can check anything that you  can check the status of something.

Now I could also say I make lessons  because I create the lessons.

But sometimes my students say I make lessons or I  make homework, but that's the wrong Co location.

That's the wrong verb because for you, if  you are completing it, you are doing it.

Here's an important verb I hear a lot of  mistakes with to follow up with someone.

So every day I follow up with my staff.

For example, now if you follow up with someone,

it means you continue a  conversation you previously had.

So I need to put on what's this, an apron.

And notice that phrasal verb.

I take off the apron.

Now that I'm wearing the  apron, I can cut up the onion.

So first I peel the onion.

So to remove the skin, you peel the onion.

껍질을 제거하려면 양파의 껍질을 벗겨야 합니다.

Now you can slice, which is like this,  slice and then chop is just larger pieces.

So to chop but then to dice would be to take  these pieces and then make them very small.

So right now I'm dicing the onion.

I'm cutting it into very small pieces.

Do you know that verb to knead the dough?

Now, some things are just  difficult to explain verbally.

You just have to see it.

So right now I'm kneading the dough.

And notice I said you need to knead the  dough because I wanted you to hear that.

The pronunciation is exactly the same.

There's a silent K on the verb to knead, just  like knight a knight silent K knit silent K,

no to no sounds exactly the same as no.

Notice you can't say ah bread because  you can't make bread singular ah bread.

So mix and mix up here.

They mean the same thing.

It means combined together  just like I'm doing now.

But you don't want to mix  up the sugar and the salt.

So here mix up also has a different meaning.

It means to use the wrong 1.

So if you mix up the sugar and salt,

it means you use salt when you  wanted sugar or the other way around.

So to get ready is the general term  we use for everything you need to do.

So what's the final thing you need  to do when you leave your house?

When you go out, when you head  out, you need to lock the door.

나갈 때는, 밖으로 나갈 때는 문을 잠가야 합니다.

So you can say I'm locking the door.

그러니까 내가 문을 잠그고 있다고 말할 수 있죠.

You can also use the phrasal verb lock up.

또한, 어구 동사인 'lock up'을 사용할 수도 있습니다.

I'm locking up.

저는 잠그겠습니다.

I just locked up in the past.

Simple, I just locked up.

So on the way to the Cafe, I  just need to stop by the bank.

The ATM notice I said I need to stop  by, so that phrasal verb to stop by.

You could also use to swing by interchangeably.

To stop by, to swing by, that means to go to a  place quickly and on your way to another location.

, 잠깐 들르다는 것은 다른 장소로 가는 도중에 잠깐 어딘가에 들르는 것을 의미합니다.

So on your way to the final destination,  you go to a different place.

그래서 최종 목적지로 가는 길에 다른 곳으로 가게 됩니다.

So maybe on your way home from work,  you stop by the store to pick up milk.

So I need to take out money?

Take out is the phrasal verb  that you use to get money.

Take out'은 돈을 얻을 때 사용하는 어구 동사입니다.

I made it to the cafe and I ordered my cappuccino.

나는 카페에 가서 카푸치노를 주문했다.

Now, when, when I ordered  this, what do you think I said?
