Now American English does some weird crazy things

We change sounds we blend sounds we delete sounds all together and in this lesson

I'm going to give you a quick tip that

Could have a huge impact on your accent and your pronunciation

so if you want to speak English more clearly than keep

So in this lesson, we're going to perfect your American English accent and yes, I am

American from The United States of

America born and raised a native English speaker

But what I'm going to show you in this lesson is specific to my English

I learned English in North America in the midwest that's my natural accent and what I'm going to show you today is

typical of

Standard Modern English but not

everyone not all English speakers do it so

This will help you if you want to sound more natural

But let me tell you not everyone does it and people might disagree on whether you should or shouldn't do it anyway

Let's talk about it

the t sound in

English a lot of things can happen with a t now in this particular lesson

I just want to talk about the glottal stop now the glottal stop the

Terminology is not as important as what actually is happening

In your mouth with this pronunciation, and when you should do it

so in a comment on

Another video lesson one of you asked me about whether we remove or delete

or omit the t sound in

Mountain and that's absolutely correct I

and many other English speakers do omit this sound but it's not enough to just say that we

Delete or omit that sound because if we just took it out, it would sound something like

Mowen

Mountain

That's not exactly how we say it say mountain

Mountain

Okay, so that is our first example of a glottal stop. It's what we say when we say uh oh

We kind of stop

Yourself you hold your breath in the back of your throat and you go uh

Uh-oh try with me. Uh-oh

So you stop the sound you stop your breath and it gives the feeling of a t sound.

But you're not actually making a t sound you don't put your tongue in the position for a t sound it just gives that

Feeling because you're pausing so let me give you some more examples of words that use a glottal stop

Mountain not

Mountain

Mountain

Mount and

Cotton not cotton, but coton and cotton

curtain not curtain, but curtain curtain

important not important, but

important

important

Okay, so again. This is how I speak English

Naturally some people may not use this some people may not recommend that you use this but when you listen to native

English speakers
