Top 3 English Learning Problems | Why You're Not Fluent and What to Do | Go Natural English

How're you doing?

In the last video we talked about how to become fluent in English, your number one question.

In this video, I'll want to dig a little bit deeper and talk about your next three biggest

problems, and how to solve them.

So, the number one question I get asked is, "How do I become fluent in English?"

After that, I get more specific questions, like, "What exactly should I study to become

fluent in English?

Who can I practice with if I don't live in an English-speaking country?

And why is it that I can understand some English speakers, but not others?"

So, let's talk about those questions.

First of all, what should I study exactly to become fluent in English?

I think we live in a wonderful time, where there's so much information at our fingertips.

You can get online, on your computer, or on your smartphone and you can google, "How do

I become fluent in English?"

or anything about learning English, and you'll get hundreds if not thousands of results.

So the problem is not lack of information for most of us.

The problem is understanding what information to focus on.

We have a lot of information, but little time.

Your time is precious.

Your time is the most valuable thing you have these days.

You can make more money; you can get more information; but you cannot get more time.

So, what my solution is for you is to honor your time and value your time, and give you

exactly what you will need to know for English fluency, for conversational fluency, to be

able understand native speakers, to communicate confidently without hesitation.

These are the points that I focus on.

I focus on especially teaching American English because I am American, so that's what I know

very well how to teach.

So, if you agree that your time is precious, my solution for you is that you should focus

on learning from a trusted source -- an English teacher who you know is experienced, who you

know will give you the correct information and who cares about you.

Okay!

The next question is: How can you practice if you don't live in an English speaking country?

So, there's a lot of ways that you can practice, even without a conversation partner.

You can think in English.

You can record yourself speaking and listen to it.

You could write in English and then look at your own writing.

But it's really important to get feedback on your English.

So, for example, if you write or if you record your speaking in English, I really recommend

that you get feedback.

So, that could be with a teacher, with a tutor, with an English-speaking friend -- although

be careful because you don't want to use your friends as teachers.

So, my recommendation is that you get feedback from a professional.

So, that is one point that I'm very excited to offer in the new course, Fluent Communication,

It's super valuable to hear exactly the points that you can improve and know exactly what

you need to do.

It will save you a ton of guesswork.

So, if you want other suggestions for practicing with people, I suggest: don't be shy.

Reach out to friends who speak English.

Find common interests.

That's a way that you can connect with people through English as a tool, not only focusing

on English as the thing you talk about.

Okay, finally, another question that I get often is, "Why can I understand some English

speakers, but not others?"

Well, I'm your English teacher.

I speak clearly and I know how to communicate in a way that's easy for you to understand.

Now, other English speakers are not trained English teachers.

They may have never left the United States, or don't have much experience speaking with

people from other countries.

So they might use a heavier accent, or more slang, more idioms, more phrasal verbs.

And that's okay!

That's totally natural.

I use those, too.

The thing is, if you want to understand all English speakers, you need to know those phrases

that native English speakers use on a daily basis, especially phrasal verbs, because those

are not used by only a small number of people, only a small portion of the time.

They are used all the time!

As soon as you step foot outside your English classroom, you're going to hear phrasal verbs

all around you and you're going to wonder, "What are they saying?

I don't understand!"

Because phrasal verbs are different from what you may have learned in your high school English

class.

So, phrasal verbs, idioms and slang -- so words like "bad" that can be used to mean

"good"!

Is it "bad-bad" or is it "bad-good?'

Those are some of the things that I help you to understand with Go Natural English.

Also, some people speak with different regional accents.

Like, in the United States, there's a few different accents that you might encounter.

People from New York might speak differently than people from Texas, another state in the

United States.

So, you have to be aware, first of all, and after you're aware of it, you can start learning

about the differences so that you can understand all different English speakers.

It's really exciting because developing your English is like updating over time and you

can continue to learn over a lifetime.

Now, fluency: fluency can mean many different things.

My goal for you is for you to be able to communicate confidently, without hesitation.

It doesn't mean that you need to know every single word in the English language, every

single slang word, every idiom, every phrasal verb -- no!

That can take a lifetime and you may never learn all of the words in the English language.

What my goals is for you is to give you an organized, structured course where, in sixteen

weeks, you can reach the level of fluency that you want in order to confidently have

the conversations that you need and desire to have.
