"Active Listening"

Here's another tip that you're not going to learn in a textbook.

It's called, "Active Listening."

When you're having a conversation to someone or you're in a group of people, like in a

meeting.

You absolutely must show that you understand what other people are saying and that you're

interested.

How do you do that?

You need to use these phrases and sounds after every idea that another person says.

I'm gonna (going to) show you an example, "Uh", "Okay", "Uh-huh", "Oh", "Really", "Hmm",

"That's a good point", "Ah, yeah", "Yeah", "Uh-hm", "Okay", "I see", "Mm-hm, yeah", "That's

a great idea.

I never thought of that."

Okay.

You get the idea, but you need to show visual and verbal confirmation that you understand

what other people are saying.

So please nod your head like that, occasionally.

Not constantly, but occasionally, after someone has completed an idea or finished a thought.

Also you need to say verbally that you understand what other people are saying.

Don't say, "I understand."

You would be better off saying, "Hmm, I see."

or "Yes.

Ah, that's a good point."

or "Okay."

It's more natural.

Okay.
